Irish Distillers Wins 11 Double Gold Medals At The World Spirits Competition 2019!

April 30, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

A Strong start to the awards season underpinned by success at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge

Irish Distillers has scooped a remarkable 11 Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2019 – the strongest-ever haul for the family of Irish whiskeys crafted at Midleton Distillery, County Cork.

The prestigious competition honoured the Jameson family with six Double Gold medals – including one for their new release, Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength – while the Redbreast and Midleton ranges collected three and two Double Gold medals respectively. Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength claimed its fourth double gold medal in a row, continuing the Redbreast legacy as the most decorated single pot still Irish whiskey in the world.

Success in San Francisco followed stand-out performances for the Midleton portfolio at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge earlier this month, where new whiskeys Red Spot and Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength stole the show – scoring 98 and 97 points respectively. Following a near-perfect score, Red Spot – which was re-introduced in November 2018 after 50 years – was awarded the Chairman’s Trophy for the single pot still Irish whiskey category.

We are delighted to see such excellent results for Irish Distillers, with recognition at the highest level right across the portfolio. The results are a true reflection of the passion, innovation and determination of the talented team at Midleton and hopefully signal the beginning of an exciting awards season. We look forward to further success throughout 2019!
– Brian Nation: Master Distiller

Founded in 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is one of the oldest spirits tasting competitions of its kind. With nearly two decades of experience, they have fine-tuned their operation blending passion and professionalism. A blind tasting process guarantees that every entry is judged fairly and given equal consideration.

The Ultimate Beverage Challenge is one of the definitive spirits and wine evaluation companies in the world. Its two world-class competitions, Ultimate Spirits Challenge and Ultimate Wine Challenge, provide unparalleled value, offering results that are reliable and easily understandable in today’s marketplace.

The Vintage expression has become a tradition at anCnoc and their recently released Vintage 2002 is a fitting testimony to the time-honoured methods employed in the production of this traditional yet distinctly modern single malt.

anCnoc Vintage 2002 has matured in Spanish and American oak casks and has been bottled in its most natural form neither chill-filtered nor coloured and as a result this dram may develop a light haze with the addition of water or if kept at a cold temperature. This haze is a natural characteristic of whisky that is non chill-filtered.

Pour your dram of this seriously smoky single malt whisky and prepare to relish an experience as rare as this unique Benromach Speyside whisky produced in very small batches. First, lift your glass to the light and appreciate the beautiful dark amber hue created by lingering for many years in First Fill Sherry Hogsheads as the whisky grew and matured in character. Take a short inhalation, appreciating the wonderful.

AROMAS WITHOUT WATER… enjoy the hints of honey cured meats mingling with zingy orange marmalade. Creamy vanilla develops with traces of chocolate, spiced dried fruit and a subtle note of dried tobacco. Take a sip. Deliciously sweet top notes and a hint of warming white pepper appear, followed by touches of rich stewed prunes, sultanas and raisins complemented by sherry undertones. Delicate hints of ginger develop on the tongue with a lingering edge of bonfire embers on the finish.

Add a few drops of water and take time to savour the nose as it develops. Lemon, honey and vanilla aromas perfectly balance the distinctive smokiness. Now lift it to your lips and enjoy a slow sip…a sumptuous medley of rich fruits, tangy citrus and delicate hint of spice and sherry give way to rich smooth chocolate and a lingering edge of seriously gorgeous smokiness. Superb!

Glen Moray “Fired Oak” Wins World Whiskies Award!

April 23, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glen Moray Fired Oak 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

Glen Moray Distillery is delighted to announce that Glen Moray Fired Oak 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, launched in the UK at the end of 2018, has won the Speyside 12 Year Old and Under category at this year’s World Whiskies Awards.

The World Whiskies Awards, held at the end of March in London, award the very best international styles of whiskies from around the world.

The Speyside 12 Year Old and Under is a very prestigious category containing some exceptional whiskies. Delivering standout character and flavour to win the category is a credit to the distillery team. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and look forward to introducing Glen Moray Fired Oak to single malt lovers all over the world.

I am delighted that Fired Oak has been chosen as the winner of the Speyside 12 Year Old and Under category at the World Whiskies Awards. I am pleased with how much character the virgin oak provides over a relatively short period of time. This added intensity accentuates the traditional ex Bourbon flavours to create a whisky which is well rounded and full of character.
– Graham Coull: Master Distiller

The World Whiskies Awards, held at the end of March in London, award the very best international styles of whiskies from around the world, as chosen by a panel of 40 judges from 13 different countries.

Master Distiller, Graham Coull was inspired to create Glen Moray Fired Oak Single Malt Whisky by the increase in popularity of American Bourbon and the success of the sweeter flavour within the drinks market. One of the key elements for producing American Bourbon is that the spirit has to be aged in a new charred (virgin) oak cask which imparts intense flavour to the spirit.

Glen Moray Fired Oak is a Single Malt Whisky matured for 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks and finished in heavily charred virgin American Oak casks, resulting in a whisky which is sublimely smooth with intense spice and toasted vanilla flavour.

Glen Moray is available to buy from these Whisky Merchants (RRP: £39.99 for a 70cl bottle ABV: 40%):-

Another lightly-peated single malt from an undisclosed (but fairly easy to guess…) Island distillery. This one starts with salted butter candy and banana bread, backed with coastal limestone, savoury smoke and a developing yellow fruit note. The palate is creamy, underpinned with zingy citrus and plenty of salty minerality. A long limey finish turns into a lingering warm herbal smokiness with camphor and dried bay.

£45.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Island
Age:
Strength: 46%.

Summary:

COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland/Orkneys.

CATEGORY: Single Malt.

DISTILLERY: Highland Park.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

BOTTLED: 2018

ABV: 46% Vol.

Introducing Highland Park Viking Tribe, an exceptional and unique single malt bottling at marrying strength of 46% ABV. Bottling at 46% ABV (compared to 40% or 43% as is normal) allows the whisky to be filtered at a higher ambient temperature. The result is intensified flavours of citrus fruits, sweet vanilla and peppery spices, balanced with Highland Park's characteristic aromatic smokiness.

The term 'marrying strength' refers to the marrying process, which gives this whisky valuable time to harmonise in the cask before being bottled. A deliberately slow and unhurried stage, long since abandoned by many distilleries, cask harmonisation remains one of the five keystones of Highland Park production. The selected casks are combined together with natural spring water to reduce the strength of this whisky to 46% ABV, before leaving the newly married spirit to rest in casks for at least a month. During that resting period, flavours from the different casks harmonise, gathering depth and consistency.

The deliciously dark colour reflects the Sherry maturation while the nose brings a burnt brown sugar sweetness with allspice and sticky figs.

The palate shows a damp leather quality with black cherries, treacle, golden syrup and Malted barley. The long finish reveals dark stewed fruits, nutmeg and cocoa.

Jameson Launches “The Bartenders Gathering” – Inspired By Another True Story!

April 11, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

‘The Bartenders’ Gathering’

Jameson Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has unveiled the next instalment of its successful advertising platform, ‘Taste, That’s Why’. The new campaign, titled ‘The Bartenders’ Gathering’, launches across television, digital and social media in Germany from April 2019, ahead of a wider global roll-out later this year.

In line with the recent ‘Scully Was to Blame’, ‘Coopers’ and the ‘The Case of the most Unusual Case’ creatives in the series, the new television film is inspired by another true story about Jameson. ‘The Bartenders’ Gathering’ has been created by TBWA Dublin under the helm of John Kane, Executive Creative Director, produced in Ireland and directed by Stink Films’ Anthony Mandler, whose recent portfolio includes work for Apple, Nike and Adidas.

Set in modern Dublin in 2016, the commercial tells the true story of the 200 bartenders from around the world that gather in Dublin each year for the Jameson Bartenders’ Gathering; a three-day immersive and educational summit for bartenders to hone their skills, learn about Jameson and the history of Irish whiskey, and explore the rich culture of modern Ireland. This commercial retraces the memorable experiences that the group had and the connections they made, with an unexpected twist in the story.

Jameson invited 50 real bartenders from Ireland and around the world to star in the film to add authenticity to the creative. The TV spot is supported by an integrated social campaign that tells documentary-style true stories of the three bartenders who stayed behind and also delves further into stories of bartenders from places such as Spain, Germany and South Africa.

Last year, we put the unique, smooth taste of the Jameson family center-stage through our ‘Taste, That’s Why’ campaign and the feedback that we have received from bartenders, whiskey lovers and premium spirits drinkers alike has been exceptional.

As we unveil the next chapter in the ‘Taste, That’s Why’ story, we wanted to highlight Jameson’s revered position among bartenders as they have been instrumental to our success in the USA and around the world over the past 29 years.

The new spot conveys the true spirit of the annual Bartenders’ Gathering in a high octane but light-hearted manner with a twist of Irish humour – it’s exactly what you’d expect from Jameson, and will help us to further build the profile and personality of the brand supporting equity growth into the future.
– Simon Fay: International Marketing Director at Irish Distillers

We discovered this story after a fateful meeting with a bartender from Cameroon. It was almost too good to be true… it’s definitely true to the Jameson brand’s core purpose of connecting people.

The Bartenders’ Gathering’ will be unveiled in Germany in April, ahead of its introduction to other key Irish whiskey markets throughout 2019 and beyond.
– John Kane: Executive Creative Director TBWA

The new campaign launches across television, digital and social media in Germany from April 2019
