Following its success in 2015, the Rìgh Seumas I (pronounced ray shay-muss) returns for a second batch. ‘Rìgh Seumas’ translates as ‘King James’, named in honour of the master blender, Jim McEwan. Building on Jim’s blend, the Whisky Creations Team has introduced a young, boisterous, peaty Islay malt. At the heart of this powerful blend is the spirit of Bruichladdich, along with mature malts from Arran, Tobermory, Auchentoshan and Rhosdhu, all matured in a French red wine barrique. Into this luxurious blend, they added a youthful Caol Ila, continuing the Murray McDavid legacy of balancing spirit and oak. ![]() Murray McDavid / 7 Year Old Peatside. £57.50 Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 46%. Summary: COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland/Various. CATEGORY: Blended Malt. BOTTLER: Murray McDavid. BOTTLING SERIE: The Vatting – Limited Release. DISTILLED: 05.05.2011 BOTTLED: 06.09.2018 STATED AGE: 7 years old. CASK TYPE: 1st Fill PX Finish. CASK NUMBER: Batch 3 NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 858 STRENGTH: 46% Vol. The much-loved Peatside is back with a rich, luscious twist. The previous batch of peated malts started its journey to maturity in bourbon and finished in Madeira casks. However, this vatting of malts has spent the first half of its life in bourbon casks and impressively matured in two first fill Pedro Ximènez Sherry hogsheads for its final years. By further maturing Scotch whisky in fresh casks, their Whisky Creations Team can showcase a brilliant balance between oak and spirit. This Peatside is a perfect example of the Art of Maturation that they are dedicated to at Murray McDavid. NOSE: sweet char, fruits, smoked kippers. PALATE: lush fruits, oak spice, peat. FINNISH: long, sweet hickory. |

![]() Compass Box / Hedonism The Muse. £240.00 Country: Scotland Region: Age: Strength: 53.3%. 700 ml. Summary: COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland. CATEGORY: Blended Grain. BOTTLER: Compass Box (CB). BOTTLING SERIE: Limited Edition. BOTTLED: 02.2018 NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 3060 STRENGTH: 53.3 % Vol. SIZE: 700 ml. The original Hedonism – Their first ever bottling – explored a brave new world of flavour previously uncharted in the world of Scotch. The world’s first Blended Grain Scotch Whisky, it was a whisky so unique that it created its own category. Hedonism will always mean something extra to us and in the years following the original release in 2000, Compass Box have returned to the Hedonism concept on three further occasions – Hedonism Maximus, Hedonism 10th Anniversary and Hedonism Quindecimus. They recently stumbled upon a single cask of exceptional aged grain whisky in the style of Hedonism and they knew it was time to revisit the concept for a 5th time. Sometimes, the character of a single cask of whisky will stir our minds and inspire us to complement it to create something even more compelling. That is the case with this limited edition Hedonism whisky. We call it The Muse. The name refers to the exceptional cask we discovered — a vatting of very old grain whiskies from different distilleries, combined many years ago and left to age together in American oak. The sellers of this cask did not know the provenance of the distilleries, but that didn’t matter to us. Its taste was remarkable, with great depth, and very much in the spectrum of flavours — honey, vanilla, pastry cream — of a Hedonism whisky. The Muse is also a nod to the woman portrayed at the centre of our Hedonism labels – the first woman, as far as we know, ever to feature on a Scotch whisky label and the image we featured on our first-ever bottling. Women make up the majority of our team here at Compass Box, which is unusual in our industry. This diversity of perspective makes us, I believe, a better business. John Glaser, Whiskymaker. TASTING NOTES: Aromas and flavours reminiscent of vanilla, marzipan and honey. Full on the palate, round and with a very sweet impression. Very long finish that echoes the vanilla and marzipan. |
![]() Douglas Laing / Timorous Beastie 18 Yer Old Batch 1. £80.00 Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 46.8%. Summary: COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland/Various. CATEGORY: Blended Malt. DISTILLERY: Dalmore, Blair Athol and Glen Garioch. BOTTLER: Douglas Laing. BOTTLING SERIE: Timorous Beastie. BOTTLED: 2017 STATED AGE: 18 years old. NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 7258 STRENGTH: 46.8% Vol. Love love love the funny label (my cats love it too). This baby’s said to be a vatting of Blair Athol, Dalmore, and Glen Garioch. Which rather makes sense, doesn’t it. COLOUR: straw. NOSE: malty, I’d say. That was the easy part, then I’m finding orchard fruits, apples and plums, then breads, then oatcakes, then crème brulée. We remain close to the barley and even to the ground, which is just fine. MOUTH: really good, as good as a middle-aged ‘natural’ vatting of shy-ish malts can be. Bread, brioche, malt, more oats, sour apples, and touches of oranges. That may be Dalmore. The body’s good. FINISH: medium, very malty, barleyish, and natural. Beer in the aftertaste. Comments: totally natural malt whisky, integrally malt-forward, with nothing in the way (peat, sherry, oak, wine, whatever). The 21 yo had more asperities, but that’s normal, this one’s only 18. Vive la nature! TASTING NOTES: Serge Whisky Fun. |
