Strength: 50%.

Summary:

COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland/Islay.

CATEGORY: Single Malt.

DISTILLERY: Bruichladdich.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

BOTTLING SERIE: Bere Barley.

VINTAGE: 2010

BOTTLED: 2019

NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 18000

STRENGTH: 50% Vol.

Bere Barley is a six-row heritage variety that has long since been forgotten from the modern world of standardised whisky making. Its revival into present day has taken effort and resilience from an entire network of millers, growers and agronomists.

The Bere project is dedicated to those like-minded souls, who have preserved a legacy and found modern applications in flavourful food and drinks, whatever the odds. This Bruichladdich Bere Barley was distilled in 2010 from a 2009 harvest, brought home by Peter, John, Magnus, Sydney and Duncan on the Orkney Islands.

NOSE: At first the nose is dominated by cereal, porridge oats, malty notes but quickly followed by intense fruit, ripe pear and peaches in syrup, lemon meringue pie. There is a fresh breezy quality like fresh linen. The oak brings honey, vanilla, coconut and hints of cinder toffee and fudge. As time opens this unique dram up, the peach notes become all enveloping and anything else is had to find.

TASTE: Back to the malted barley on the palate, the texture is like honey, rich and incredibly viscous. A range of sweet fruit and oak notes jostle for position, peaches in syrup again, honey, chocolate, cinder toffee and apricot jam, there is an amazing sweetness from the oak and malt that is unlike any other spirit we make, the Bere barley gives so much intensity of flavour and the spirit has drawn deep from the wood in the last eight years.

FINISH: On the finish there is an air of gentle grace as the softness of the fruit continues, pear and apple come through with the peach notes and offer another dimension. The oak and malt fade away slowly and leave you to contemplate an incredible experience.

CHARACTER: An absolute delight to behold, from the outstanding texture to the intensity of the fruit, this ancient grain yet again confirms our barley exploration is based on distillation for flavour not yield. This particular vintage has an intensity and range of flavour I have seldom seen before but inspires us yet again to continue our journey.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

VINTAGE: 2010

BOTTLED: 2019

AGE: 8 Year Old.

NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 18000

CASK TYPE: American oak casks.

ABV: 50% Vol.

The whisky they distil from the organic barley of Mid Coul reflects the complex natural flavours of the landscape. Just as their stillmen refuse to abandon the traditional crafts of distillation in favour of automation or industrialisation, so farmer William Rose rejects the use of herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilisers.

Crop rotation is key. The barley must take its turn in a seven year farm cycle that also produces organic cattle, sheep, oats, beans, grass, carrots, market gardening and a megawatt of green electricity. Respecting the land, the soil and the climate nourishes a genuine and thorough understanding of terroir and the results are pure Bruichladdich.

NOSE: Fresh malted barley, melon, peach and apricot. Opens up with notes of rich honey, lemon meringue and floral notes of gorse and heather. Vanilla and caramel and pastry notes from the wood are nicely balanced with the intensity of the fruit, waves of pear apple and gooseberry still hint at the fresh green fruits of the spirit.

TASTE: Sweet pear drops, vanilla fudge, chocolate and marzipan initially. No aggression here at all just well-integrated flavours and a round gentle texture. The oak and malt notes complement each other so well overlapping each other with toasted rye bread, buttery popcorn and fresh oak, vanilla fudge and smooth caramel merging. The organic barley seems to give more fruit from the distillation and a more viscous texture which is a joy to the olfactory senses.

FINISH: Sweet citrus, lemon drops, come through well on the finish and a slight char from the oak gives depth. The finish feels more marine, a little briny alongside the oak and malt which works beautifully.

CHARACTER: Elegance, richness and definite Bruichladdich DNA. The depth of flavour comes from the malt and its transformation through the alchemy of distillation. The spirit is pure and fresh, the oak rich and honied, together with time the combination of great oak, superb barley and slow distillation make for an amazing exploration of the fundamentals of making whisky.

VINTAGE:

BOTTLED: 2018

CASK TYPE: .

STRENGTH: 50% Vol.

The Islay barley series has always been a mission. For many years now they have sought to showcase the phenomenon of “terroir” in single malt whisky – the belief that soil, climate, micro-climate, geographic orientation, natural influences and local weather systems will influence the quality and flavour profile of the spirit, making it a unique expression of ‘place’. Bruichladdich Islay barley 2011 is distilled from barley grown on six western and central Islay farms in 2010.

CHARACTER: A sweet spot in the maturation of an incredible whisky. A chance to see the elements at work as the young spirit showing green fruits, apple, pear and gooseberry transitions to peach, apricot and mango with the influence of time. The careful selection of casks holds this moment perfectly in balance as their contribution to the ageing of the spirit brings oak depth, vanilla and coconut sweetness and lemon/grapefruit zest without overpowering the sweetness of the malt or the profound cereal notes that come from the Islay grown barley. The structure is firm, the texture luxurious, carrying the DNA of this island.

COLOUR: Fresh Cut Straw.

NOSE: From the outset this is overtly floral and fruity. Slow distillation yet again brings out the best from the Islay grown Barley, the abundance of soft fruit notes and delicate floral style of this dram is shared with our past Islay grown releases. Typical Bruichladdich style fruit notes of crisp apple and ripe pear along with peach and dried apricot are further enhanced with lemon drops, grapefruit and orange zest. There is a vast array of flavour rising from this whisky as it opens further. The oak and cereal components come through after the fruit, pipe tobacco and vanilla notes mingle with barley sugar and caramel wafers, as ever a distinct marine tang hangs in the air.

FINISH: The finish is about the fruit, dried apricot from the oak and lemon, kiwi and caramel wafer. A warm sand, marine note lingers as the Islay maturation tells its part of the story. As this whisky lingers on the palate it puts you in mind of the construction and structure to its form. Each element, distillation, time, cask and barley have a clear influence yet not one dominates another as this whisky reaches a crossroads in its development. This vintage is at the perfect stage to appreciate all that it is as it lays bare its DNA, its philosophy and its quality.

About The SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other.

As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: “to provide our members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world’s widest collection of single cask whiskies.”

Conceptualised in the late 70’s and established in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, now 35 years old, has branches and partners bars in 19 countries globally. The Society has a selection of over 500 casks every year, each cask yielding a few hundred or less whisky bottles which are unique to that cask.

Rather than name their Whiskies after the distillery, the Society has a coding system. The Society also creates fantastic tasting notes summaries for their Whiskies and other bottles. The whiskies are straight from the cask single malt, undiluted, without chill-filtration or colouring at cask strength.

More recently the Society has been named Independent Bottler of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Independent Bottlers’ Challenge (IBC) competition.

PALATE: The smokiness is very apparent yet soft and tempered with toffee-sweetness and gentle oaky spice.

Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle. The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp.

NOSE: takes me back to my early teens, spending schooldays working on a farm: pure farmyard with an earthy yet fruity punch. The sort of complex nose that almost makes you forget to drink the stuff…almost…;

TASTE: a gentle coating of vaguely sweet peat that multiplies in intensity; salivating yet chewy. Some liquorice and hickory notes make their drying mark;

FINISH: distinctly gristy and unusually dry for a smoky malt. Long, luscious and not a little oaky late on;

BALANCE: a bit more than a tang, believe me! Faultlessly clean distillate that revels in its unaccustomed peaty role. The age is confusing and appears mixed, with both young and older traits being evident.

The original Hedonism – Their first ever bottling – explored a brave new world of flavour previously uncharted in the world of Scotch. The world’s first Blended Grain Scotch Whisky, it was a whisky so unique that it created its own category.

Hedonism will always mean something extra to us and in the years following the original release in 2000, Compass Box have returned to the Hedonism concept on three further occasions – Hedonism Maximus, Hedonism 10th Anniversary and Hedonism Quindecimus.

They recently stumbled upon a single cask of exceptional aged grain whisky in the style of Hedonism and they knew it was time to revisit the concept for a 5th time.

Sometimes, the character of a single cask of whisky will stir our minds and inspire us to complement it to create something even more compelling. That is the case with this limited edition Hedonism whisky. We call it The Muse.

The name refers to the exceptional cask we discovered — a vatting of very old grain whiskies from different distilleries, combined many years ago and left to age together in American oak. The sellers of this cask did not know the provenance of the distilleries, but that didn’t matter to us. Its taste was remarkable, with great depth, and very much in the spectrum of flavours — honey, vanilla, pastry cream — of a Hedonism whisky.

The Muse is also a nod to the woman portrayed at the centre of our Hedonism labels – the first woman, as far as we know, ever to feature on a Scotch whisky label and the image we featured on our first-ever bottling.

Women make up the majority of our team here at Compass Box, which is unusual in our industry. This diversity of perspective makes us, I believe, a better business.

John Glaser, Whiskymaker.

TASTING NOTES: Aromas and flavours reminiscent of vanilla, marzipan and honey.  Full on the palate, round and with a very sweet impression.  Very long finish that echoes the vanilla and marzipan.

Membership to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society plus a bottle of their new release Old Fashioned is just £99!

Description: “Welcoming warmth that combines chocolate, coconut, blood oranges and herbal barley sugar travel sweets. In time, cherry lozenges, candied orange and dusty sweet marshmallows are added to the mix. The palate is outrageously coconutty, with orange Muscat syrup poured on luxurious vanilla ice cream. Beautifully mouth-coating. A touch of water lightens the experience and accentuates a hoppy grapefruit note, which is complimented by fruit salad with cream and over-ripe peaches. The palate is now fruity, thick and syrupy, with chocolate shavings, almonds, marzipan, stem ginger, buttered pancakes and scones.”

Glen Moray Distillery Launches 21 Year Old Portwood Finish!

August 9, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glen Moray 21-Year-Old Portwood Finish Single Malt Whisky

Glen Moray Distillery is launching today its latest addition to the Glen Moray Elgin Heritage Collection: Glen Moray 21-Year-Old Portwood Finish Single Malt Whisky at the Whisky Fringe Festival 2019 in Edinburgh.

It is a perfectly executed Port finished single malt which combines the spicy sweetness from the ex-bourbon casks and the rich wine flavours which develop from the authentic Port casks imported from Portugal.

Graham Coull, Master Distiller Glen Moray Distillery, was interested in the interaction of the spirit with the Port cask towards the end of maturation, which is the ‘icing on the cake’ for Glen Moray 21-Year-Old Portwood Finish Single Malt Whisky. The whisky does not disappoint and is multi-layered and seriously smooth.

Glen Moray 21-Year-Old Portwood Single Malt Whisky is the perfect balance of American oak and Port flavours”, says Graham, “Immerse yourself in what is a wonderfully complex dram.

– Graham Coull

It will be available to purchase during the Whisky Fringe Festival 9th – 11th August where visitors to this famous event will have the opportunity to sample Glen Moray’s latest single malt at Royal Mile Whiskies

Tasting Notes:

Nose: intense berried fruits smothered in creamy vanilla, rich caramel and fresh baked gingerbread.

Taste: beautifully balanced and full of character. Blackcurrant and liquorice dominate in the first instance, then chewy caramel toffee and chilli infused chocolate come to the fore. A real taste sensation.

Finish: rich and satisfying. Dark chocolate and caramelised raisins linger on the tongue long after the last sip is taken.

RRP: £125

ABV: 46.3% ABV for a 70cl bottle

Redbreast 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, which is crafted at Midleton Distillery by Irish Distillers, has taken home the World Whisky Trophy at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition, one of the world’s most influential spirits competitions, now in it’s 50th year.

Redbreast 12 Year Old scored an impressive 98 points!

The competition awarded Redbreast 12 Year Old with its highest honour across Irish, American and Japanese whiskeys after scoring an impressive 98 points, continuing its legacy as the most decorated single pot still Irish whiskey in the world.

The respected competition also honoured Midleton Very Rare Barry Crockett Legacy and Jameson Cooper’s Croze with 98 points, which was underpinned by Irish Distillers winning the majority of Gold Outstanding honours within the Irish whiskey category.

Success at the IWSC parallels stand-out performances for the Midleton portfolio at the Beverage Testing Institute, with Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength and Redbreast 21 Year Old receiving platinum medals, the BTI’s most prestigious award, for scoring 96 points respectively.

In addition, Irish Distillers scooped 27 Medals out of the 67 medals on offer at The Irish Whiskey Masters, with sixteen Gold Medals and seven Masters awarded across the range. The Redbreast portfolio was presented with coveted Master and Gold medals, with Redbreast 21 Year Old commended by the judges for ‘showing something different to the rest of the pack.’

We are thrilled to see more fantastic results at such prestigious global spirits tasting competitions. It is great to see the Redbreast range flourish as it continues to excite consumers with its exemplary single pot still Irish whiskey style.

These awards are truly a testament to the craftsmen at Midleton Distillery who assist me in blending the finest Irish whiskeys in the world, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds!
