Preorder The New Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength From Edencroft’s Website Now!

November 5, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength whisky!

On Thursday, November 18th Bunnahabhain are releasing a limited-edition cask strength whisky inspired by visitor tastings in the distillery’s iconic Warehouse 9!

It is now available to preorder on Edencroft’s website priced at £75.00 per bottle!

Bottled at 55.1% ABV – compared to the 46.3% of the core 12-Year-Old single malt

Matured on the remote, north-eastern coastline of Islay, and produced using pure spring water from the Margadale River, the 12-Year-Old Cask Strength is an undiluted celebration of the distillery’s hugely popular Bunnahabhain 12-Year-Old expression.

For years, visitors making the pilgrimage to Bunnahabhain have been enjoying drams straight from the cask in the famous, Warehouse 9, so now fans from all over the world will be able to recreate this privilege at home.

When people embark on a journey to Islay and try our whiskies straight from the cask, it creates so much joy. But we understand that not everyone is able to make the trip. With this limited edition 12-Year-Old Cask Strength, we can give people around the world the chance to experience it themselves.

Not all whiskies work at cask strength and many whiskies don’t stand up to full maturation in sherry casks. Bottling our 12 Year Old at cask strength intensifies the core characteristics of spice, cracked black pepper, cinnamon but not at the expense of our spirit’s character. In fact, it enhances it. The mouthfeel and texture of the whisky increase and it shows off the balance of the spirit and the wood but in a more concentrated form.

This really represents Bunnahabhain in a bottle.
– Brendan McCarron: Bunnahabhain’s Master Distiller

The 2021 edition is bottled at 55.1% ABV – compared to the 46.3% of the core 12-Year-Old single malt – the Bunnahabhain 12-Year-Old Cask Strength will be available in nine international markets and can be enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to encourage more floral scents, followed by caramel and vanilla on the palate.

Preorder NOW on Edencroft’s website!

Tasting Notes

COLOUR: Deep russet gold

NOSE: Dark berries, citrus and toasted oak which gradually transitions to sweet vanilla and a hint of cinnamon spice.

PALATE: Creamy chocolate, sherry-soaked fruit and a balanced nuttiness give way to cloves, nutmeg and a subtle sea salt spray.

FINISH: A lingering sweet finish with cherries and a touch of wood spice.

Bunnahabhain, pronounced Bunn-na-ha-venn, meaning mouth of the river in Scots Gaelic, is the most remote distillery on Islay, nestled in Bunnahabhain Bay on the shores of the Sound of Islay. It is world-famous for its unpeated malts, going against the grain of the whisky which the island is usually recognised for, as well as its sherried single malts.

Whiskey Flash Blog: Sampling Rebel Kentucky Straight Bourbon ‘Tawny Port’ Finish – Hurry Though – It Will Be Gone In A Flash!

November 3, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Rebel Bourbon Embraces Tawny Port Finish For Third Special Release!

Welcome to the Rebel Bourbon #WhiskyFlashBlog!

Organised by Steve from The Whisky Wire numerous contributors will be posting articles today sharing their sampling thoughts on the recently released Rebel Kentucky Straight Bourbon ‘Tawny Port Finish’.

If you would like to see what everyone thought search for the hash tag #RebelBourbon on Twitter!

So, here goes …

Kentucky-based Lux Row Distillers recently released its 2021 limited edition of Rebel Bourbon which this year was finished in tawny port barrels.

This year’s run is 6,000 bottles

Following in the footsteps of the previous two annual releases, this year’s run of 6,000 bottles continues to celebrate Lux Row Distillers’ hallmark of secondary finishing to give the wheated Rebel Bourbon a unique, one-time-only finish.

Each year, the Special Finish Series sees four-year aged Rebel Kentucky Straight Bourbon finished for six months in a different cask. 2019 welcomed the Serie’s first release – a French Oak Finish, whilst last year brought a Cognac Cask Finish. Both the limited edition runs experienced high demand, with stocks quickly selling out.

The Tawny Port flavours pair really well with Rebel Bourbon’s vanilla, oak and caramel profile. It’s a winning combination that creates a distinct, depth of rich flavours that’s unlike anything else in the Rebel family, whilst still retaining the Kentucky Straight Bourbon’s remarkably smooth finish.

The secondary finishing elevates the original four-year ageing of Rebel in new charred white oak barrels, taking it to a different level that more years in the rackhouse wouldn’t achieve.
– John Rempe: master distiller and blender at Lux Row Distillers

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Rebel Kentucky Straight Bourbon ‘Tawny Port Finish’ (45%)

Nose: Sugary, stewed, plump raisins with vanilla, crisp apples and a hint of orange. The orange increases considerably with time – very nice – and different!

Palate: Cane sweetness and those plump raisins really treat the taste buds! Add in toffee, vanilla and chocolate with orange. This orange gets stronger and stronger with time (a la Mandarine Napoleon) and is very tasty indeed!

Finish: Some warming spice to go with the sweetness, very welcome and balances the dram nicely.

Overall: A morish, heartwarming whiskey that is very Christmasy in flavour and atmosphere.

Now I just need the Xmas tree and a roaring fire to complete the magic!

The Rebel Range is available to buy from Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange but it’s VERY popular – so don’t delay!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire / @TweetTastings) for the invite!

And many thanks to Andy (@ChapmanPoolePR) for sending me the sample!

And, of course, many thanks to luxrowdistillers.com (@RebelYell_UK), without whom!

Celebrate Diwali & Old Fashioned Week With A Rampur ‘Asava’ Whisky Cocktail!

November 2, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Rampur Asava Indian Single Malt Whisky Old Fashioned Cocktail!

To celebrate Diwali – the Festival of Light (2nd. – 6th. November) and Old Fashioned Week (5th. -14th. November), Rampur Distillery has very kindly sent me their Rampur Asava Indian Single Malt Whisky Old Fashioned Cocktail to try!
(Many Thanks Rampur Distillery!)

Diwali celebrates the Indian New Year, traditionally enjoyed with fireworks, the exchanging of sweets and the lighting of candles and lamps in all the homes in India.

Diwali – the Festival of Light (2nd. – 6th. November)

Rampur Indian Single Malt Whiskies are a range of luxury whiskies produced by one of India’s oldest distilleries, Rampur Distillery. These super premium malt whiskies, which are styled as “The Kohinoor of Single Malts”, are steeped in the rich Indian heritage and enduring traditions of the Maharajas. Rampur whiskies are named after the princely India state known for its rich heritage and royal traditions.

The Rampur Asava Indian Single Malt Whisky Old Fashioned Cocktail is infused with Chai Tea, Cardamom Pods, Cloves, Cumin Seeds & Cinnamon, Demerara Sugar Syrup and Cardamom Bitters!

Rampur Distillery is owned by Radico Khaitan, which was established in 1943 and is the largest Indian beverage company. Radico Khaitan is also one of the oldest whisky distillers in India and Rampur Distillery has been distilling high quality and innovative malt for over 25 years. Rampur Whisky is distilled, matured and bottled in Uttar Pradesh in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The Process

The Himalayas provide polar opposite climate conditions throughout the year, which means that Indian whisky matures significantly more quickly than other whiskies such as Scotch and Irish whiskies.

As Rampur Distillery is situated at the foothills of The Himalayas, the cold winters and hot summers give their whiskies added dimension and produce single malts with depth of flavour which are smooth and mellow tasting with a long-lasting finish. Master Blender, Anup Barik, was born into a family of blenders and brings decades of expertise and perfection to the blending of these fine whiskies.

I find that Rampur is a great dram for people who are new to whisky. Their sweet, tropical fruit trademark is an easy introduction to the world of whiskies!

So, what did I think of the cocktail? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – The Rampur Asava Indian Single Malt Whisky Old Fashioned (26.4%)

Indian spices galore!

Rampur Asava Indian Single Malt Whisky infused with Chai Tea, Cardamom Pods, Cloves, Cumin Seeds & Cinnamon, Demerara Sugar Syrup and Cardamom Bitters.

Nose: Rich ginger and a whole myriad of aromatic spices!

Palate: So many flavours with ginger being on top followed by cloves, cumin and all wrapped up in sweet sugar and bitters coupled with the solid body of Asava whisky.

Finish: A warming, spicy ginger finish with a sweet and bitter combo and those ever present indian spices!

Overall: A flavoursome rich, full-bodied cocktail – one of the best I’ve ever tasted!

I’ve also included my Tasting Notes for Asava Whisky ….

Tasting Notes – Rampur Asava Indian Single Malt Whisky (45%)

Matured in American Bourbon barrels and meticulously perfected in Indian Cabernet Sauvignon casks for the first time in History!
Non-chill filtered.
£64.95

Nose: Creamy biscuit, vanilla and tropical fruit. The blackcurrant is there but arrives slowly. Then make way for chocolate and coffee.

Palate: Gorgeous Lychee with very smooth creamy chocolate.

Finish: Very peppery with tannic and tobacco.

Overall: The red colour from the Cabernet Sauvignon casks is very Alluring – and so is the taste! Forget the dessert course – just have a Rampur Asava!

Once again, many thanks to Rampur Distillery (Instagram: @rampursinglemalt) for the lovely sample!

Sampling Seven Seals Whisky ‘Zodiac’ Releases (Part 2) – Truly ‘Stars’ Of The Dramming World!

October 27, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

‘The Age Of …..’

Robert from Highfern.com recently sent me two more samples from Swiss distillery Seven Seals Whisky. They make up part of their Zodiac line which was first released earlier in the year!

In the same way as the zodiac in astrology describes different traits of the human character with different virtues, likewise the Zodiac line from Seven Seals features single malt whiskies which demonstrate particular qualities.

There has been a number of releases in the range including The Age of Scorpio and The Age of Aquarius. (Which I sampled in an earlier blog post) As per previous releases from Seven Seals, these whiskies have been produced by finishing Swiss Single Malt Whisky using Seven Seals innovative accelerated maturation process.

Developed by Dr Dolf Stockhausen this new patented technique for maturing whisky is efficient, quick, and environmentally friendly, without sacrificing quality, aroma or character and aims to challenge preconceptions about the maturation and categorisation of Single Malt Whisky.

For more on the Seven Seals method, please see this intro from Dr Dolf Stockhausen on youtube

So, as said earlier, Robert from Highfern very kindly sent me two more samples to try – ‘The Age Of Leo’ & ‘The Age Of Taurus’ (Cheers Robert!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

The Age Of Leo

Tasting Notes – ‘The Age Of Leo’ Single Malt Whisky (49.7%)

Nose: Richly sherried with additional porty notes. Thick, rich toffee coupled with luxurious creamy chocolate. Add some woody aromas for a great nose!

Palate: Creamy rich toffee and chocolate with plump, syrupy raisins. Also shades of coffee.

Finish: Initially muted but then growing spice joins forces with slightly woody flavours.

Overall: A gorgeous dram which shows it’s quality in every nosing and sip!

The Age Of Taurus

Tasting Notes – ‘The Age Of Taurus’ Single Malt Whisky (49.7%)

Nose: Sweet smokehouse peat with charred wood and caramel smoke – divine!

Palate: The nose is mirrored on the palate plus there’s some nice toffee.

Finish: Chilli spice, antiseptic cleanliness and licorice gather to provide a very satisfying finish!

Overall: A sweet and savoury delight with it’s sugary and smokey flavours – a delightful combination!

Many thanks to highfern.com (@HighfernLtd) for sending me such glorious samples!
