The Loch Lomond New Range!

Loch Lomond New Range
Loch Lomond makes an impressively diverse and interesting range of whiskies, and this new-look range does a fantastic job of bringing them all under a single umbrella and making them just that bit easier to navigate. If you’re already familiar with Loch Lomond’s range of single malts, come and take a look at their attractive new outfits. If not, come and learn how to tell your Inchmoans from your Inchmurrins.
Foursquare Diadem
Foursquare Diadem

The second exclusive rum bottling from one of our favourite rum distilleries, Foursquare, comes in the form of this 12-year-old blend of pot- and column-distilled rums aged in a mix of both ex-bourbon and ex-Madeira casks. Named Diadem, it’s limited to just over 2000 bottles, and it’s available to order on our website right now.

Midleton Very Rare
Midleton Very Rare

Way back in the mists of time, when it was possible – even sensible – to go places and do things, one of our writers, Ning, was invited out to Ireland to learn all about the myriad wonders of one of Irish whisky’s pinnacle drams: Middleton Very Rare. Read all about her discoveries and vicariously experience the distilled joys of the Emerald Isle over on the blog now.

Mackmyra Jaktlycka (Happy hunting) is a Swedish single malt whisky that celebrates autumn, berry foraging and the treasures to be found in the ancient Swedish woods.

As you savour Jaktlycka an engaging trail of blueberries and lingonberries is revealed, as the whisky was predominantly matured in casks that previously held Swedish berry wine from the craft producer Grythyttan.

The essence of the whisky is our elegant recipe, aged in casks of Swedish and American oak, combined with a handful of smoky recipe casks for an inviting depth.

Introducing & Sampling The Whiskymaker’s Editions “Colheita” From The Lakes Distillery!

September 1, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whiskymaker’s Editions, Colheita

A diversion from their sherry-led house style, The Whiskymaker’s Editions Colheita is the first in a series of special-edition single malt whiskies from The Lakes Distillery which showcase whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi’s sense of adventure in maturation and blending.

Each unique bottling is an expression of creative freedom, the product of a playground where instinct, experience and inspiration roam free, coming together to realise one intrinsic objective: the creation of outstanding flavours.

Each of the 5,400 bottles of The Whiskymaker’s Editions Colheita is non-chill filtered, bottled at the natural colour

In exploring an alternative side of The Lakes Single Malt, the inaugural release brings Colheita Port’s influence into the frame.

In Portuguese, Colheita means “harvest” and in this case, is a supreme and exceptionally rare expression of aged Tawny Port made exclusively of grapes from a single vintage.

Smooth and refined, maturation in the finest, meticulously sourced Colheita Port casks has been complemented by a very small proportion of Bourbon barrels to enhance and contrast certain flavour characteristics.

The Whiskymaker’s Editions is an intentional deviation from our house style, created to showcase a different personality of The Lakes Single Malt.

This particular expression has been designed to be a little more fun, fruity and easy to drink and, as a limited-edition, is perfect for anyone who appreciates The Lakes’ house style but wants to experience and explore the other side of The Lakes Single Malt.

My role as a whiskymaker is to unlock the infinite variables and never-ending flavour possibilities throughout the liquid’s journey through the distillery and, in the future, more Editions will follow.
– Dhavall Gandhi: The Lakes whiskymaker

At 52% ABV and with a recommended retail price of £65, each of the 5,400 bottles of The Whiskymaker’s Editions Colheita is non-chill filtered, bottled at the natural colour and available from LakesDistillery.com

The Lakes Distillery have kindly sent me a sample of their new dram to try (thanks!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – The Whiskymaker’s Editions “Colheita” Single Malt Whisky (52%)

Colour: Light sherry with a dash of porty redness in there!

Nose: Immediate porty flavours with some apple & orange. The port becomes sweeter with time and there’s hints of wood polish.

Palate: Creamy, stewed fruits with an almost Christmasy feel to it with some light port flavours.

Finish: Warming finish that’s punchy and spicy but not too brutal – very smooth indeed!

Overall: A lovely, smooth dram that belies it’s 52% strength. It’s not overpowering so can be easily drunk neat.

I still think that there are strong hints of their familiar sherry-led house style but it’s not a criticism – I like their sherry-led house style!

In Portuguese, Colheita means “harvest”

Many thanks to Lakes Distillery (@LakesWhisky) for sending me such a fantastic sample!

About The SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other.

As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: “to provide our members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world’s widest collection of single cask whiskies.”

Conceptualised in the late 70’s and established in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, now 35 years old, has branches and partners bars in 19 countries globally. The Society has a selection of over 500 casks every year, each cask yielding a few hundred or less whisky bottles which are unique to that cask.

Rather than name their Whiskies after the distillery, the Society has a coding system. The Society also creates fantastic tasting notes summaries for their Whiskies and other bottles. The whiskies are straight from the cask single malt, undiluted, without chill-filtration or colouring at cask strength.

More recently the Society has been named Independent Bottler of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Independent Bottlers’ Challenge (IBC) competition.

Irish Distillers Launches “Grow Your Own Cocktail” Web Series for Bartenders!

August 27, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Grow Your Own Cocktail!

Jameson Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has launched a Grow Your Own Cocktail web series to promote local sourcing, collaboration and discovery among bartenders and local producers around the world.

Last year, the Jameson team brought bartenders, local farmers and producers together in communities across the globe to encourage mixologists to create locally inspired cocktails. The Jameson team captured all of their adventures, which fans can now enjoy as a six-part web series.

Create a Jameson cocktail using locally sourced ingredients!

The series will feature episodes from Dubai, Tel Aviv, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Stockholm and Cork, home to Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery, to educate and inspire the global bar community to use local and uniquely sourced ingredients.

Since the Grow Your Own Cocktail concept was born, Jameson has encouraged meaningful human connections between bars and their community through foraging, hosting masterclasses, and partnering with local expert craftspeople. This has inspired participants to embark on a journey of collaboration with local producers on a truly global scale.

Alongside the web series, Jameson is encouraging bartenders to proactively support their local community by joining the Grow Your Own Cocktail movement. Jameson is offering a €1,000 cash prize to be split equally between bartenders and producers who work in collaboration to create a Jameson cocktail using locally sourced ingredients.

The competition will encourage bartenders to leverage their local environment by creating a signature drink with ingredients sourced from a farm, corner shop or local market and winners will be encouraged to invest their prize back into their community through further local sourcing.

Entrants simply post their cocktail on Instagram, outlining the local ingredients used, background to the collaboration, and explain why Jameson should support them, along with the hashtag #GrowYourOwnCocktail. The contest will judge each Bartender’s fresh new cocktail. How their new serve celebrates and supports both the local community and the smooth taste of Jameson will also be rewarded.

The Grow Your Own Cocktail web series is integral in encouraging collaboration between the bar industry and their local craftspeople. The bar community has faced serious challenges in 2020, so now, more than ever the industry needs solidarity, creativity and innovation to help it through these times.

It’s Jameson’s mission to support this creativity and encourage bartenders to use their own environments in truly innovative ways.

The bartending community is at the heart of Jameson as the first advocates of our whiskey many years ago. We can’t wait to see what bartenders and their wider communities come up with.
– Brendan Buckley: Irish Distillers’ International Marketing Director

Bartenders are encouraged to join the global movement and combine local resources and ingredients

Episodes of the web series are being released throughout August and September via @JamesonHosts on Instagram and the Jameson Irish Whiskey YouTube channel.

For more information on how to enter the competition, bartenders should head over to the @JamesonHosts Instagram page. All posts must tag @JamesonHosts and the deadline for entries is September 14th 2020.
