Kilchoman Launch ‘Casado’ Single Malt Whisky – Their Autumn Limited Edition Release For 2022!

October 21, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Casado Single Malt Whisky!

Kilchoman launch Casado, the Autumn Limited Edition Release for 2022!

Experimenting and exploring different flavours throughout the whisky-making process is something Kilchoman is always doing.

ANTHONY WILLS: Founder

In recent years barley variety and yeast influence have been discussed in depth but wood management remains a key part of any single malt.

Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder and Managing Director, had the idea to try something out of the norm and purchase 6,000 litre red wine vats at char level 2 and 3, each giving a slightly different impact on the whisky finishing inside, then marrying them together after a longer than usual finish.

The red wine marriage gives the whisky layers of red fruit and spices which complement the vanilla and butterscotch influence of the bourbon barrels beautifully.

– ANTHONY WILLS: Founder

12,900 bottles available!

Tasting Notes:

Nose: An opening note of intense campfire smoke balanced with ripe summer stone fruits; peach, plum and cherry. Deep notes of marzipan become the focus combined with layered maritime notes
Palate: The red wine vatting brings pepper and spice on the first taste. Dry, salty peat smoke sits on the palate, yet fruit notes of apricot and lemon find their way through
Finish: A long finish which brings a hot, spicy character from the marriage in Portuguese red wine vats. Stewed, cooked fruit notes bring a sweet-jam profile providing an on-going sweet-ness that the classic Kilchoman smoke balances beautifully

About Kilchoman

Kilchoman Distillery is a small family run farm distillery based on the rugged west coast of Islay. The distillery was established by Anthony Wills in 2005, the idea was to build a new distillery which took whisky production back to its roots. Anthony and wife Kathy have been joined by their three sons; George, James and Peter.

Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2022

Kilchoman produces its 100% Islay single malt from barley which is grown in fields surrounding the distillery and completes every stage of the whisky-making process at the distillery, including traditional floor malting. Kilchoman is the only distillery in Scotland to do this.

Since the first bottling was released in 2009, Kilchoman has quickly established itself as a high quality Islay Single Malt Whisky with these notable awards:

– The IWSC 2022 competition – Machir Bay scored 98 points and was awarded ‘Gold Outstanding’. 100% Islay was also awarded a “Gold Award’ and scored 95 points.

– The International Spirits Challenge 2022 – Machir Bay and Sanaig were both awarded Gold Medals.

– Kilchoman’s exceptional quality was recognised at the prestigious International Whisky Competition (IWC) when Anthony Wills was named Master Distiller of the Year 2013.
– In 2016 both core expressions won major awards with Sanaig named Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky – no age statement at the IWSC and Machir Bay came first as Best Islay Single Malt Scotch in the International Whisky Competition.
– Machir Bay was also awarded a Gold Medal in 2015 at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) with Loch Gorm being awarded a Silver Outstanding Medal and 100% Islay a Silver at the prestigious awards.
– Kilchoman won Malt Advocates Artisan Whisky of the Year 2011, only three years after the first bottling was released.

Elements Of Islay To Launch Re-Imagined Core Range Of Blended Malt Whiskies!

October 13, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Elements of Islay Cask Edit, Elements of Islay Bourbon and Elements of Islay Sherry

EOI (Elements of Islay) is introducing this autumn a re-imagined core range of blended malt whiskies!

The multi-awarded brand which has won a loyal following over the years for its various limited batch editions, presents three permanent whiskies which each captures the essence of their origin: Islay.

The three expressions, Elements of Islay Cask Edit, Elements of Islay Bourbon and Elements of Islay Sherry are small-batch, expertly sourced, independently bottled whiskies; all are natural in colour and non-chill filtered. Each expression is inspired by a different element of maturation and aimed at curious whisky drinkers who have a desire to experience, taste and explore the unique flavours of Islay.

We’re very excited to present a new, re-imagined core range of whiskies for Elements of Islay. The rich, smoky flavours make this unquestionably elemental and a great start to the Elements of Islay whisky journey.

The blend combines fresher, fruitier style of peaty Islay single malt from the north coast with a typical rich and smoky style from Islay’s south coast and has been matured in four different styles of casks to offer a complex but balanced whisky for enthusiasts and people looking to discover the incredible island of Islay. We already had an excellent reception from the trade and hope we’ll introduce more drinkers to the joy of Islay whiskies.
– Oliver Chilton: Elixir Distillers, Master Blender

Cask Edit is a union of two single malts aged in bourbon and sherry casks leading to the creation of an exceptionally peaty Islay whisky showing the perfect balance of drinkability and personality at 46% ABV. The whisky also lends itself particularly well in cocktails.

On the bolder side, Bourbon Cask is matured in first fill and refill bourbon barrels and is bottled at 54.5% to fully demonstrate the whisky’s dominant Islay’s personality.

Sherry Cask offers a synthesis of flavour with notes of dried fruits, dark chocolate lemon oil and smoke. Bottled at 54.5%, it aims to challenge the status of quo of what it means to be an Islay whisky.

The new Elements of Islay range is available in the UK from this month onwards before rolling out to other markets later this year.

Elements of Islay Cask Edit – 70 cl – 46% ABV – RRP: £44.95
Elements of Islay Bourbon Cask – 70 cl – 54.50% ABV – RRP: £59.95
Elements of Islay Sherry Cask – 70 cl – 54.50% ABV – RRP: £64.95

Sampling Kilchomans’ New 100% Islay 12th Edition – A Moreish Dram For Sure & I Can’t Say I’m Surprised!

September 22, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

The 100% Islay 12th Edition

Kilchoman launch 100% Islay 12th Edition, Single Farm Single Malt!

The 100% Islay 12th Edition is now available!

Anthony Wills – Kilchoman Founder

This latest release was distilled from their 2009, 2010 and 2011 barley harvests then matured in 29 bourbon barrels and 6 oloroso sherry butts for a minimum of 8 years. There’s no doubt that, like previous editions, this will be a popular dram!

It’s a lovely 100% Islay, rich and fruity on the nose then lots of citrus sweetness and tropical fruit on the palate with waves of peat smoke coming through on the finish.

– ANTHONY WILLS: Founder

Kilchoman has kindly sent me a sample to try. (Thanks kilchomandistillery.com / @Kilchomanwhisky!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Kilchoman 100% Islay, 12th Edition, Single Single Malt Whisky (50%)

BARLEY VARIETY: PUBLICAN HARVESTS: 2011, 2012, 2013

20PPM Heavily Peated.

29 bourbon barrels & 6 oloroso sherry butts for a minimum of 8 years.

12,500 bottles released.

Nose: Sweet, salty liquid smoke with attractive fruity peat. Rich, dark chocolate with hints of liquorice and blackcurrant come through a little later – a heady mix!

Palate: Sweet and deeply savoury with rich smokey peat, liquorice and dark chocolate add to the depth and richness.

Finish: Tasty chilli and there’s also an antiseptic peatiness which grows on you, and of course, appetite sharpening salt, sweet smoke!

Overall: A Moreish dram for sure and I can’t say I’m surprised – Kilchoman ALWAYS produces Moreish whisky!

I was a bit surprised about the antiseptic flavours coming through but like another famous brand that has this characteristic it all adds up to a cracking taste and sensory experience!

12,500 bottles released – there’s no doubt this will be a popular dram!

Once again, many thanks to kilchomandistillery.com (@Kilchomanwhisky) for sending me such a quality dram!

Jura Announces 2022 Distillery Exclusive To Celebrate Fèis Ìle!

June 1, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura’s limited edition 2022 Distillery Exclusive!

Jura Single Malt whisky is celebrating the return of the popular Fèis Ìle festival with a very special community gathering and the launch of a limited-edition 14 Year Old Distillery Exclusive, crafted inside a specially selected cask waiting patiently in one of the island distillery’s warehouses!

The new whisky will be available from the 3rd June, the date that Jura Distillery marks its official day as part of the Fèis Ìle celebrations, which this year will see the whisky community at the distillery come together with islanders for a gathering that also includes Deer Island Rum and Lussa Gin.

Just 700 bottles will be available …

The 2007 limited Jura Distillery release was matured in Cask No.1892, a hand-selected Sherry butt from Jerez in Southern Spain, for 14 years. Just 700 bottles will be available of this exquisite liquid which boasts a golden orange colour and a cask strength of 57.2% ABV.

The distillery team had earmarked this cask as a potential island exclusive and it was easy to see why. The fruity, aromatic qualities we’ve found around the 2007 vintage, combined with the rich, warming notes from its time in a single Sherry butt make for a compelling expression of Jura’s distinct character.

Trying it with Mark and the team on the island, we quickly realised it would be the ideal candidate for 2022’s Fèis Ìle Distillery Cask, celebrating the return of this great festival.
– Joe Ricketts: Lead Whisky Maker for Jura

With an inviting nose expressing warm sweet spice, prunes soaked in Armagnac, crystal malt, dried peach, green banana and bitter orange, this 14 Year Old single cask malt delivers dried stone fruit and sweet citrus on the palate, together with notes of chocolate mint, medium roasted coffee and pistachio, before finishing with a lovely citrus blossom lift.

We knew this was a special cask destined for great things. Our distillery team had shortlisted it as a potential future distillery exclusive and Joe agreed.

We’ve worked harder than ever to ensure this celebratory bottling is ready for Jura Day, filling, wax dipping and completing every single bottle with hand-written labels all on island. A fitting tribute to the great community here.
– Mark Bruce: Jura Distillery Brand Home Manager

The 700 bottles will be available to purchase exclusively from the distillery visitor centre on the 3rd of June before the remaining allocation of bottles is made available for pre-sale to select international markets via the Jura Whisky website, with an RRP of £120

There will be no tours or tastings in the distillery this year, however the visitor centre will be open to all and distillery staff look forward to greeting everyone keen to get their hands on a bottle of Jura 2022 Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive. Deer Island Rum, Jura Brewery, Lussa Gin and The Island Bakehouse will also be running activities throughout the day and, for the islanders themselves, along with anybody lucky enough to be staying overnight, there will be live music from Glaswegian sensation Trail West supported by local band Pete Smoke and the Roaches, from 8pm in the local community hall.

Jura Whisky Adds To Their “Signature Series” With 14 Year Old American Rye Cask!

April 12, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Whisky Adds To Their “Signature Series” With 14 Year Old American Rye Cask!

Jura Single Malt whisky is adding a ‘smooth and warming’ 14 Year Old American Rye Cask edition to its Signature Series, in celebration of Jura’s island community and the unbreakable bond between the islanders and the whiskies they produce.

Initially matured in Jura’s traditional American White Oak ex-Bourbon barrels, which are the perfect partner for all the new make spirit at the distillery, the whisky has been further matured in hand-selected American rye whisky casks to add depth and complexity, with distinctive layers of spicy and aromatic flavours.

Now available at a rrp. of £42

The rye casks impart notes of cinnamon, vanilla, cacao and warming honey to Jura’s signature smooth and bright profile.

Warm gold in colour, Jura 14 Year Old Rye Cask is reminiscent of warm summers evenings on the island, with classic fresh notes of citrus and vanilla balancing mango, fresh mint and crushed almonds.

On the palate, flavours of toffee apple and pecan pie are revealed with layers of cinnamon, honey, cacao and hazelnut, before giving way to a long, warm and nutty finish leaving an impression of maple syrup, guava and soft spice.

The vibrancy of our 14 Year Old Rye Cask is matched only by the spirit of the community on the island. The close-knit group are the inspiration for us to produce whiskies which transport you to Jura with every sip.

The rye casks add a warming complexity and depth of flavour to our signature fresh and vibrant Jura spirit, making it a perfect dram for every season.
– Gregg Glass: Whisky Maker & Blender at Whyte & Mackay

This latest addition to the Signature Series follows the launch of Jura Rum Cask Finish last summer and is presented in a striking green carton emblazoned with scenes from Jura complemented by golden rye, uniting the heritage of this whisky. Additionally, a QR code gives those who purchase a bottle an exclusive opportunity to discover more about the liquid, its story and how best to enjoy it.

Each bottle of Jura Whisky is a celebration of its island home and embodies the passion of those who make it – and the Jura 14 Year Old Rye Cask is no exception.

The remote Scottish island provides the canvas from which these dedicated islanders take their inspiration and the distillery provides the means to bring this to life. Our stills are amongst the tallest in Scotland, which create a light new make spirit with a citrus and pine character, and we use peated malted barley for less than four weeks a year which is added sparingly to provide body and seasoning to each whisky. This allows the Jura distillery to provide a unique home to craft our spirit.
– Claire Blackadder: Global Head of Brand for Jura

Jura 14 Year Old American Rye Cask is available now at an RSP of £42 and will roll out into key markets later in the year.

Product information:

Jura 14 Year Old Rye Cask

Available in 70cl

Colour: Warm gold

Sampling Jura’s ‘Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021’ – A Festival Of Flavour!

June 11, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Jura Distillery Manager’s Tasting!

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Jura Distillery Manager’s Tasting last Sunday as part of their online Fèis Ìle events.

We were there to celebrate the launch of Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021. A special single cask release which, for the first time, will support the vital annual Jura Music Festival!

The Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021 proved to be very popular and sold out within the hour. Good news as a donation of £25 from each bottle sold will help to honour Jura’s favourite island event of the year, the Jura Music Festival.

During the tasting we were treated front and back with some fantastic folk punk and then we had a tasty cocktail courtesy of ‘The Gate’ consisting of their handmade cocktail with lime, orange and ginger beer. Very refreshing and an excellent palate cleaner.

Then the fun really began – we were treated to some drams to sample which consisted of:-

  • Jura Aged 21 Years – “Time” – Travel Retail Exclusive
  • Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2019
  • Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2021

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Jura Aged 21 Years – “Time” – Travel Retail Exclusive (46.7%)

Jura Aged 21 Years – “Time”

Matured in American White Oak ex bourbon barrels, before being finished in ex-peated malt casks.

Nose: Toffee and green apples while reminders of a dusky library linger in the background.

Palate: Cane sweetness with caramel, vanilla and green apples.

Finish: Very smooth with some peppery spice blending in with grapefruit dryness.

Overall: A very civilised dram with some sweet, toffee and fresh fruit flavours – certainly worth taking a trip for!

Tasting Notes – Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2019 (56.5%)

A heavily peated 17 year old sherry butt filled in 2002.

Distilled: 27th. March 2002
Bottled: May 2019
Non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Nose: Peaty, smokey, BBQ flavours very much to the fore with a lovely coastal feel!

Palate: Liquid peat smoke with some added liquorice and treacle.

Finish: It’s spicy and sweet at the end with generous pepper and peat woodiness and a hint of salt.

Overall: I always love a smokey dram and this one doesn’t disappoint!

Tasting Notes – Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2021 (57.1%)

Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2021

18 Years old, unpeated whisky. Fully matured in a refill ex-sherry butt from Jerez, Spain.

Distilled: 30th. October 2002
Bottled: May 2021
Non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Nose: Sweet apple with pear and tropical fruits. Toffee arrives later on.

Palate: Very tropical with added apple, cane sugar sweetness, orange and chocolate.

Finish: Some punchy peppery spice that sure adds some Oomph! Shades of salt at the end.

Overall: A completely different dram to the 2019 – the 2021 is a sweeter, lighter, tropical fruit whisky.

Though punchy it’s very smooth and very enjoyable! Some tasters added water but I wouldn’t personally – I love it as it is!

Many thanks to jurawhisky.com (@jurawhisky) for sending such a glorious tasting pack!

Sampling Two New Whisky Exchange ‘Exclusives’ – Balblair 2005 & Arran 1996 – Rare Summer Treats!

June 8, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

More Whisky Exchange ‘Exclusives’!

The Whisky Exchange has released two more drams in it’s popular ‘Exclusives’ range!

First up is an ex-bourbon-matured Balblair 2005. Wonderfully fruity and a release that truly shows off a side of the distillery that is often overlooked.

The second dram is a 1996 Vintage Arran – matured in what The Whisky Exchange thinks was a wine cask – Arran’s records apparently are a bit spotty back in the early days of filling, and the exact cask type isn’t known!

The Whisky Exchange has kindly sent me a sample of each one to try (Thanks @WhiskyExchange!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Palate: Sweet pears and apples, a little liquorice and shades of blackcurrant.

Finish: Punchy spice tempered with those pears. Grapefruit adds some dryness at the end.

Overall: Another quality dram from The Whisky Exchange’s ‘Exclusives’ range that doesn’t disappoint. The fruit flavours are the highlight of this dram – those pear aromas are amazing! A fresh, light whisky that’s perfect for the Summer – and long may the Sun shine!

Tasting Notes – Arran 1996: 24 Years Old – Whisky Exchange Exclusive (53.4%)

The Arran retails at £199

Nose: Powerful spiced orange that really dominates the nose – but only in a good way! Toffee with slight hints of smoke.

Palate: Rich mouthfeel, lots of orange, sweet vanilla, and plump fruits.

Finish: A little pepper to add to the finish but in the main it’s the initial palate that continues through to the end.

Overall: A beautiful dram! Incredibly morish and satisfying. It’s a rare treat at the price I know – but what a treat!

Jura Whisky Unveils Distillery Cask “Fèis Ìle” Limited Edition 2021!

May 18, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Whisky Unveils Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021!

Jura Single Malt whisky has announced the launch of its Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021, which is set for release on the distillery’s official day of Fèis Ìle on 6th June. This special single cask release will, for the first time, support the vital annual Jura Music Festival!

Fully matured for 18 years in a single refill sherry butt from Jerez in Southern Spain, hand selected by Jura distillery manager Graham Logan, this unpeated Jura single malt delivers sweet aromas of candied almonds, toasted marshmallows and Scottish tablet. Intense flavours of rich chocolate orange, treacle and Demerara sugar come through on the palate with a sticky sweet-salted caramel to finish.

The single cask release is offered at a cask strength of 57.1% ABV and is non-chill filtered with no added colour. Distilled on 30th October 2002, only 300 bottles will be available for sale, each one filled and wax sealed by the distillery team – a testament to the passion and commitment of the tiny island community.

A donation of £25 from each bottle sold will help to honour Jura’s favourite island event of the year, the Jura Music Festival. Now in its 28th year, this year’s festival will take place online during the last weekend in September and will host traditional Scottish musicians and bands from around the country for a weekend packed full of music. The £25 donation is equivalent to the cost of a ticket to the main Saturday night event which is the highlight of the Festival for many.

Only 300 bottles will be available for sale …

Despite the challenges of the past year, we are delighted to be back for Fèis Ìle 2021 with a very special limited-edition release which gives back to our community and this vital annual event which we’ve proudly supported over the years.

When hand selecting this specific cask, I was looking for a whisky that was smooth, bright and lively, like the atmosphere on the island during the festival. This 18-Year-Old single cask bottling is a real treat for Jura fans. Our gulf stream-protected warehouses allow a longer maturation cycle and the sea spray and cask have given this whisky a long-lasting, salted caramel taste on the tongue.
– Graham Logan: Jura distillery Manager

At the designated Fèis Ìle day on 6th June celebrating Jura, Jura Whisky will be hosting a range of interactive virtual events which fans can join online. Two Instagram Lives hosted by Global Single Malt Specialist, Stephen Martin, will showcase the best of Jura, from Brunch Time cocktails with Kyle Jamieson of Edinburgh’s Nauticus Bar to the Jura pub lock-in with Andy Gemmell of The Gate in Glasgow.

Each bottle of Jura Whisky is said to be a celebration of the island home and embodies the passion of those who make it. This remote Scottish island provides the canvas from which these dedicated islanders take their inspiration, and the distillery provides the means to bring this to life through whisky making.

The Jura Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021 will be available to buy from jurawhisky.com on 6th June, 2021 – priced at £145.

Jura Single Malt whisky recently released their latest addition to their product range in the shape of Jura Rum Cask Finish, a fruity, exotic single malt bringing the lively taste of the tropical to its range of whiskies!

Perfect paired with pineapple!

Initially matured in American White Oak Ex Bourbon barrels, the spirit went on to conclude its maturation journey in hand selected Caribbean Rum Casks to create a smooth, creamy and fruity finish.

Our Jura Cask Editions have been created to showcase cask types in partnership with the Jura distillery character. The flavours offer interesting interpretations of our classic style, making them ideal for those looking to explore new flavours and finishes.

With Jura Rum Cask Finish, the taste experience has been enhanced through the finish to create a beautifully tropical and fruity result. In making this release, we wanted to share a Single Malt that’s easy drinking and great value with compelling character!
– Gregg Glass: Whisky Maker & Blender at Whyte & Mackay

Jura Rum Cask Finish has launched initially in the UK, available in Tesco stores at £45 for 1 litre.

Jura Whisky has kindly sent me a sample to try (Thanks jurawhisky.com (@jurawhisky!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Jura Rum Cask Finish (40%)

Nose: Hints of tropical fruits which steadily grows. There’s also vanilla, caramel, fudge and sweet muscovado sugar.

Palate: Sherbet sweet with vanilla, toffee and tropical flavours which start to make a slow appearance along the way.

Finish: Smooth finish with growing, warming pepper, tropical fruit hints and sweet vanilla. Moderately dry finish.

Overall: A great dram, the tropical flavours made me want to sing “Here Comes The Sun” over and over again while I was sampling!

And just to cap it all I also received some Pineapple pieces with which to try a bit of taste pairing: The result? Very nice – the two go together very well – a whisky tropical paradise in fact!

Once again, many thanks to jurawhisky.com (@jurawhisky) for sending me the sample!
