Sampling Mays “Flavour Hunter Festival Discovery Pack” – The SMWS Does It Again!

June 1, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The “Flavour Hunter Festival Discovery Pack”

It was grand to be part of the recent SMWS virtual tasting event, sampling five festival whiskies from this year’s Rare Releases – truly the grand finale of an outstanding month of whisky discovery!

In addition to being ably hosted by Madeleine Schmoll, Olaf Meier and Bob Wenting, we were also treated to music from Skye Musician Donnie Livingstone followed by a society Quiz!

What a night!

The five 25ml drams sampled were:-

  • Distillery G16 Dark ‘N’ Stormy Crème Brûlée
  • Distillery 24 Massive oak extraction
  • Distillery 93 Lock, stock and two smoking funnels
  • Distillery 3 The finesse of a fragrant furnace
  • Distillery 53 Blowtorched Mexican mousse

The SMWS very kindly sent me the above collection to try on the night. Thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Dark ’n’ stormy crème brûlée

CASK NO. G16 Lowland
1st fill #4 char 24 month air seasoned Oak with toasted head barrels
6 years old
29th April 2016
1 of 1300 bottles
50.00%

Nose: Fruity sweetness with lots of apple, tropical fruits and sweet spice and peach.

Palate: Quite oily with cane sweetness that goes dry quickly. There’s tropical fruits and orange as well.

Finish: Savoury and peppery with chilli thrown in for good measure!

Massive oak extraction

SMB . 24
Speyside
1st fill & refill Spanish oak and American Oak PX barrels and hogsheads
14 years old
13th October 2008
1 of 2554 bottles
63.00%

Nose: A brilliant colour on this one! The nose is creamy with stewed fruits, sherry hints and some wood with leathery aromas.

Palate: Creamy sherry with a heavy sweetness and even heavier spicy hit that is gorgeous!

Finish: The finish ends with coffee and caramel with dark chocolate – very nice!

Lock, stock and two smoking funnels

SMB. 93
Campbeltown
1st fill barrel ex bourbon
8 years old
16th September 2014
1 of 1276 bottles
60.2%

Nose: Lovely sweet, smokey wisps that tantalises the taste buds! This is joined by sweet nuts creamy biscuit.

Palate: Light but oily mouthfeel with medicinal, peaty aromas coming through followed by sweet chocolate.

Finish: A smooth dram with antispetic flavours taking hold now, adding to the sweet peated finish which also has some added pepper.

The finesse of a fragrant furnace

SMB. 3
Islay
2nd fill bourbon & Spanish Oloroso Hogsheads
18 years old
16th February 2004
1 of 1173 bottles
56.9%

Nose: Fruity peatiness with added furniture polish and old wood – bit of a dusky, old library vibe to this one!

Palate: Liquid sweet smoke with tropical fruits, pineapple chunks and then it gets really peachy!

Finish: More antiseptic flavours with some peppery spiciness to finish. Not as massively smokey as some drams can be.

Blowtorched Mexican mousse

CASK NO. 53.446
Islay
1st fill American oak PX Hogshead
14 years old
27th May 2008
1 of 234 bottles
57.7%
Buy now: £95.00

Nose: Subtle smoke with a sherried side note to it, some cherry and it’s also more antiseptic than the other drams.

Palate: Sweet and the smoke is there in peaty spades – very smokehouse! Some fruit cherry sweetness makes a nice balance!

Finish: Very smooth with appetite sharpening smokiness and the antiseptic is pleasing the senses!

My favourite on the night:

I love peated drams but I’ve fallen for Distillery 24 – Massive oak extraction. A Very smooth dram, “Dangerously so”, as Bob Wenting said and he is spot on!
You could spend a few hours getting to know this whisky and you would probably still be only part way there!

Many thanks to the SMWS (@SMWSUK) for sending me such a fine collection of drams and for hosting a fantastic sensory evening.
The SMWS does it again!

Mossburn Releases Strictly Limited Single Malt Vintage Cask Whiskies!

May 18, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Mossburn Single Malt Vintage Cask releases!

Mossburn Distillers & Bottlers Limited is releasing a series of four new strictly limited vintage cask single malts for 2023 that were matured with care and bottled in their prime, straight from the cask!

These batches of vintage cask single malts are carefully sourced from some of Scotland’s lesser-known distilleries which are renowned for their flavourful characteristics. This collection is designed to encourage whisky aficionados to look beyond the obvious and discover some fine drams destined to be savoured and shared with those that know and love Scotch.

The perfect gift for that whisky lover you’re not sure what to get, these hard-to-find vintage cask single malt whiskies from Mossburn Distillers, producers of Skye’s Torabhaig Single Malt and the Hebridean peated blend Caisteal Chamuis, have been matured, finished and bottled in a way that enhances the character of the spirit.

Two of the single malts in the 2023 collection have been finished in casks designed to either temper the power of the spirit or accentuate its flavour. All are released only when ready for optimal drinking, with minimal intervention, and bottled either at batch strength or 46% abv, with no chill filtering or colouring.

The master blender of this collection, Neil Macleod Mathieson, has specifically selected these barrels from Mossburn’s ageing warehouses, where many single malts lie slowly maturing until worthy of release. Each batch exhibits all the hallmarks of balance, depth and complexity that fine single malts can deliver.

While we bottle, distil and blend whisky, we’re whisky lovers first and foremost. And with the Mossburn Single Malt Vintage Cask releases, the idea is to bring something special to market.

Here, we allowed the spirit to sing, and sometimes this involved us showing restraint and just leaving it be until ready to release. This was the case with the beguiling, honeyed beeswax notes of Mossburn No. 33 Blair Athol Bourbon Cask 12-years-old, bottled straight from its original Bourbon Barrels, and the sweet spice and marzipan character of Mossburn Vintage Cask No. 34 Strathmill, which spent its whole life in Virgin European Oak.

We’ve used the grapey, fragrant sweetness of Moscatel casks to temper the full-bodied meaty character of Benrinnes 2008 No. 31 and added a fruity raspberry softness to the fragrant, natural grassy spirit of Teaninich 2008 No. 32 with red wine casks. This is an approachable and eminently drinkable collection to be savoured by whisky lovers.
– Neil Macleod Mathieson: Master blender

The four whiskies are:-

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks no. 31 – Benrinnes Moscatel finish 14 years old, batch strength

Benrinnes is well known for its full-bodied, masculine character, and we felt that a Moscatel cask finish would not only bring some nice, sweet, grapey fruit but help tame the power as well.

The result was sufficiently well-balanced for us to decide to bottle at batch strength.

It is full and fruity on the palate with some red fruit and vinous notes evoking a degree of sweetness and light spice, finishing with a little extra dried fruit, prunes and a touch more oak and black pepper.

In short, a very complex and well-balanced whisky.

RRSP: £75.00

No of bottles: 1,800 bottles globally, 240 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 54.9%

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks no. 32 – Teaninich red wine finish 13 years old, batch strength

One of the very first whiskies we bottled was a batch strength Teaninich (No. 4), which was the best way we felt to retain its naturally linseed-like oily character.

So, we were pleased when we were able to bottle at batch strength here (No. 32) again. This time though we had added the extra dimension of a red wine finish.

It has a very precise bouquet of hay with a little “graininess” followed by toast, raspberry jam and cream. Complex on the palate with more red fruit notes integrated with malted cereal evolving into a very good long finish.

RRSP: £77.00

No of bottles: 1,900 bottles globally, 240 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 56.2%

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks No. 33 – Blair Athol Bourbon Cask 12 years old, batch strength

A naturally, beautifully balanced whisky – and so we again left it alone at batch strength. After a whole life spent in fresh first-fill Bourbon casks, we felt that the beguilingly beautiful beeswax notes were not to be messed with.

Aromas of honey, oak spice and toasted oats were a joy. The palate again had upfront honey and waxiness which developed into a rich, full spicy flavour with undertones of hazelnuts and oaky tannins. Not to be missed.

RRSP: £70.00

No of bottles: 1,900 bottles globally, 240 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 54.5%

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks no. 34 – Strathmill virgin European oak cask, batch strength – 12 years old

The only reduced whisky of this tranche of four, we found that the vanilla and marzipan notes were actually enhanced by reduction, and so we offer this whole-life Virgin European Oak at 46% abv. In addition to the complex vanilla and marzipan characteristics, are notes of boiled sweets, oak, toffee, sweet spice and barley sugar.

RRSP: £65.00

No of bottles: 1,700 bottles globally, 228 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 46%

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Angels’ Nectar Single Malt Scotch Whisky Oloroso Sherry Cask Edition – Aged 6 Years (46%)

Distilled in 2015 at a distillery in Highland Perthshire, this single malt has been matured for six years in former oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46%.

Nose: Very fruity port wine aromas with sherry and sweet orange. It is then joined by creamy, yeasty biscuit and some toffee.

Finish: A satisfying, peppery finale with a short dry finish.

Overall: I always look forward to these limited edition drams. They have a great and varied variety of flavours and they always throw up a few surprises!

Kilchoman Launch Cognac & Fino Sherry Cask Matured Whisky Expressions!

May 12, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Kilchoman Cognac & Fino Sherry Cask Matured Expressions!

Kilchoman launch Cognac and Fino Sherry Cask Matured Expressions!

Cognac Cask Matured

Kilchoman have welcomed their first ever Cognac cask matured release as part of their 2023 Limited Editions. 32 casks were chosen by Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder and Robin Bignal, Production Manager, for their exceptional quality.

The Kilchoman spirit was filled into Cognac casks sourced from Tonellerie Bossuet (France) in 2016 and left to age in dunnage warehouses for a minimum of six years.

Nose: An opening note of rich apple and pear forms the structure for this release. Herbaceous fresh fruit begins to make its way as the whisky begins to open. Subtle tones of honey and warming spice develop over time. Peat remains delicate on the nose, bringing a dryness to this release.

Palate: The texture provided by a slow distillation and the influence of the Cognac oak allows for a buttery texture which continues throughout. Dried lemon and apricot combine with cinnamon and nutmeg which are held together by an influence of toasted oak and sweet peat smoke.

Finish: The depth of flavour that the Cognac casks have provided The Kilchoman spirit is unrivalled; dried fruits and marzipan make way to crystallised ginger, balancing sweet and spice. Lingering peat smoke is lightened with the influence of citrus oil making itself known across the palate.

32 CASK VATTING 15,100 BOTTLES 50% ABV 50PPM

The Cognac casks selected for this 2023 release allow our fruit-driven, citrus spirit style to balance with that of the Cognac oak.

There is a delicate balance to be found when working with Cognac casks; keeping the age of this release at a minimum of six years old ensures the flavours from the spirit and the cask are easily detected, neither dominates.
– Anthony Wills: Kilchoman Founder

“There is a delicate balance to be found when working with Cognac casks …” Anthony Wills – Kilchoman Founder

Fino Sherry Cask Matured

The 2023 limited edition Fino Sherry Cask Matured becomes Kilchoman’s second ever release to be matured in ex Fino sherry casks. Anthony and Robin hand-selected a total of 20 Fino Sherry Butts of which the spirit was distilled in 2018.

The Sherry butts were purchased from Bodega Jose y Miguel Martin (Spain) for their impeccable standard. Aged for a minimum of five years.

Nose: Elegant, dry peat smoke on the initial nosing, gradually opens to the unmistakable fruity character of Kilchoman. The distinct influence from the Fino Sherry casks provides dry, smoked oak which balances with the smoke found in the heavily peated Kilchoman malt. A lasting aroma of sweet butterscotch as the whisky begins to open.

Palate: Honeycomb sweetness can be found immediately on the palate, gradually giving way to rich toffee and caramel. The Kilchoman spirit brings together candied fruits and the fresh citrus found in the distillation. Flaked almonds and a delicate peat smoke remain throughout.

Finish: Long-lasting considered finish combining the malty spirit of Kilchoman, with the ripened citrus fruit profile provided by the Fino Sherry casks. A subtle peat smoke which has coated the palate right through now shares the finish with hints of dark chocolate.

20 CASK VATTING 15,650 BOTTLES 50% ABV 50PPM

The Fino Sherry maturation works incredibly well with our classic Kilchoman character. The 2023 release elevates the fragrant green apple, stewed fruits and sweet citrus while allowing for the unmistakeable Kilchoman peat smoke to linger on the palate.

Fino is another example of sherry casks working together, not against, our Kilchoman spirit!
– Anthony Wills

“Fino is another example of sherry casks working together, not against, our Kilchoman spirit!” Anthony Wills – Kilchoman Founder

Sampling Lakes Distillery: The Whiskymaker’s Editions ‘Iris’ – A Quality Whisky With Bags Of Fruity Flavour!

April 28, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whiskymaker’s Editions ‘Iris’

The latest Whiskymaker’s Edition, ‘Iris’ has been released and is a true departure from The Lakes’ classic sherry-led signature style!

‘Iris’ is a quality whisky with bags of flavour!

Inspired by the stunning Himalayan town of Gulmarg, which means “meadow of flowers,” this bold expression represents The Lakes’ spirit of adventure as it ventures into the creation of intensely tropical and modern flavour profiles.

Iris is a lively and uplifting experience that turns up the sensory volume to the max, transforming the mundane into a vibrant display of colours, aromas and flavours.

With its fruity and floral notes, including freshly-harvested red apples, juicy pears, and fragrant honeysuckle, ‘Iris’ is a spectrum of flavours bottled at 56% ABV and non-chill filtered, and it is available at The Lakes Distillery and select whisky retailers worldwide!

The Lakes Distillery have kindly sent me a sample of their new dram to try (Thanks Lakes Distillery!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Lakes Distillery: The Whiskymaker’s Editions ‘Iris’ English Whisky (56%)

Nose: Crisp apple and plump, summer fruits with some white wood. There’s also toffee coming through at the back and hints of tropical fruits for company.

Palate: A creamy palate of fresh apple and those plump, summer fruits joined by honeydew melon and tropical flavours.

Finish: Sweet spices with some punchy black pepper which gives a tasty counterpoint to the sugary fruitiness.

Overall: A very morish quality to this dram with the lighter fruits and heavier spice combining perfectly. Ideal as a perfect Summer evenings dram – or just great anytime when you fancy a quality whisky with bags of flavour!

InchDairnie Distillery Releases Its First Ever Product – A Scottish Rye Whisky!

April 26, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

“RyeLaw”

The ingenious, highly engineered InchDairnie Distillery located at the heart of the Kingdom of Fife has released its much anticipated first whisky. Named RyeLaw, the distillery has used its sophisticated technology to extract maximum flavour from Scottish-grown rye and barley. The elegantly designed bottles of this 2017 vintage are available from today, RRP £110 (70cl/46.3% ABV), at select retailers including Selfridges, The Whisky Shop, The Whisky Exchange, Luvian’s, Speciality Drinks, Harvey Nichols, Hedonism, Good Spirits Co, Fortnum & Mason!

The result of years of meticulous planning by distillery founder Ian Palmer is set to delight discerning drinkers the world over as they savour this new, luxury whisky. A single-minded approach to using innovative materials, methods and maturation practices has resulted in a spicy rye flavour that is unlike any other Scotch whisky. These include:

◙ 53% malted rye and 47% malted barley ground extra finely for maximum flavour extraction

◙ Cereals mashed using a Meura mash filter, one of only two used in Scotland

◙ Fermented using a rye-specific yeast, which results in lower yields, but higher flavour

◙ Double distilled in pot stills – not continuous distillation – the first with rare, double condensers and the second a bespoke Lomond Hill still, designed by Ian
◙ Palmer alongside stillmaker, Frilli (it is the only precision distilled rye Scotch whisky made in this way)

◙ Matured in charred new oak casks, created from trees that can be traced back to forests in the Ozark Mountains, USA

The InchDairnie Distillery Lomond Still

We’ve been preparing for this day for well over a decade, and it is only now that we feel the quality of RyeLaw meets our exacting standards that we are putting it into bottles. And what a whisky it is…

While we are rooted in Scotch whisky tradition, we have explored what is possible when agriculture meets industry and innovative technologies combine with methodology, to create a superb rye whisky that is sure to excite palates.
– Ian Palmer: InchDairnie Distillery Managing Director & industry veteran of 45+ years!

The rye spiciness with vanilla, sweet biscuit cereal and dried fruit notes seem much more defined than rye whiskeys from America we’ve compared it to. There’s a richer, more luxurious mouthfeel and great balance, which are certainly helped by the favourable maturation conditions we have in Fife compared to Kentucky.

The use of malted rye in the mash means we have a softer, more sippable style of rye whisky. We look forward to hearing if our American cousins agree.
– Scott Sneddon: Distillery Manager

Ian Palmer – InchDairnie Distilleries Managing Director & industry veteran of 45+ years!

Presented in an elegantly tall bottle, with a ripple effect on one side representing the Company’s “3Ms” philosophy – innovation in materials, methods, maturation – looks like drops of water landing simultaneously, each creating its own ripple effect. The bottle’s neck is inspired by the special filter of the hammer mill. With distillation of this inaugural RyeLaw release taking place in just a single week in the whole year, only 200 casks of the ‘year one vintage’ have been bottled and made available worldwide. Subsequent vintages are already maturing in different types of cask to those from year one’s Ozark Mountains. In a field of its own, RyeLaw is free from colourings and is non-chill filtered.

With its first distillation on Christmas Day in 2015, InchDairnie Distillery has been quietly building its stocks of whisky, producing different styles, driven by the seasons. Knowledgeable whisky aficionados have been eagerly awaiting the first release of the distillery’s spirit since news of the engineer-driven, alternative approach being taken at the energy-efficient production facility started becoming public.

Tasting Notes:

Aroma: Distinguished rye spiciness mingling with mellow oak above a soft layer of vanilla

Flavour: Cascading pepper from the rye caressingly wrapped in mouth-coating, oily viscosity and sweet biscuity, cereal and dried fruit notes
