Innis & Gunn Unveils ‘The Original: XX EDITION’ – A Single Malt Whisky Cask-Matured Beer – 20 Years In The Making!

July 17, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Original: XX EDITION

Innis & Gunn has launched The Original: XX EDITION – to celebrate the Scottish brewer’s 20th anniversary. This special Single Malt Whisky Cask-matured Original has been 20 years in the making, like Innis & Gunn!

Innis & Gunn The Original: XX EDITION has been brewed to celebrate two decades of Innis & Gunn creating truly original, revolutionary beer.

A 7.7% Single Malt Whisky Cask-matured beer, the casks for The Original: XX EDITION were laid down the very year that Innis & Gunn launched, back in 2003. Before being filled with The Original XX brew, these casks had recently brimmed with a deliciously rare and flavourful 20YO Speyside Single Malt!

Before being filled with The Original XX brew, these casks had recently brimmed with a deliciously rare and flavourful 20YO Speyside Single Malt.

Launching The Original way back in 2003 by maturing our beer in single-malt whisky casks seemed like an act of revolution. The interaction of beers with oak had all manner of historic forebears, but it seemed that none of those brewers had wanted the flavour of the oak cask to influence the flavour of the final beer.

I wanted the opposite. After all, if oak of many different provenances and fillings can add such complexity and intrigue to whiskies and wines, then why should the same not be true for beer?

Twenty years after Innis & Gunn’s launch, we are maturing this celebration beer in casks of a twenty-year-old Speyside whisky of real elegance. And we have produced an exceptional union of beer and oak with this limited edition of Innis & Gunn Original.
– Dougal Gunn Sharp: Founder and Master Brewer, Innis & Gunn

This exclusive 20th anniversary celebration brew has a signature smooth body, with moreishness and notes of vanilla, toffee, and spicy oak.

The third beer in Innis & Gunn’s Limited Edition range for 2023, The Original: XX EDITION comes in a gift carton and is available via the Innis & Gunn online shop priced at £6 per 330ml bottle.

Innis & Gunn’s beers push the boundaries of brewing, using innovative techniques, ingredients and oak cask maturing methods. Innis & Gunn’s award-winning portfolio includes the premium Innis & Gunn Lager Beer and the brewer’s flagship ‘The Original’, a single malt whisky cask matured beer, which is unlike any other in today’s beer market.

About Innis & Gunn:

Since its foundation in 2003, Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn has grown to become one of the UK’s most successful craft beer businesses. Using innovative techniques including oak cask maturation, Innis & Gunn brew multi-award-winning beers including the flagship ‘The Original’ and Innis & Gunn Lager Beer, recently awarded at The Great Taste Awards. The brewer’s portfolio also includes a range of IPAs and a line of bespoke limited-edition brews which demonstrate quality, innovation and craft.

Shinty & Books Help Celebrate The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s 40th Anniversary!

Shinty & Books Help Celebrate The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s 40th anniversary!

IT’S A NUMBERS GAME AS WHISKY CLUB TEAMS UP WITH SHINTY PLAYERS TO CELEBRATE 40th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION!

To launch its 1.9.8.3 Collection, a special set of whiskies marking the year it was formed, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has joined forces with players from Tayforth Shinty Club!

Players from Tayforth Shinty Club help launch The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s 40th anniversary 1.9.8.3 Collection!

There are a ‘number’ of reasons why The Scotch Malt Whisky Society teamed up with players from Tayforth Shinty Club in Edinburgh – the most important one being to launch its 1.9.8.3 Collection, a very special set of whiskies celebrating the Society’s 40th anniversary.

In addition, the numbers on the shinty players’ strips also help to capture the whisky club’s unique coding system, which sees bottles given numbers rather than the name of the distillery the whisky is from. This distinctive coding system is designed to help drinkers focus on the flavour of the whisky.

The final reason the two organisations got together was that they both have reasons to celebrate – in addition to the Society marking its 40th anniversary, Tayforth is marking its own special milestone, its 50th anniversary.

The Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by a maverick whisky fan called Pip Hills. Four decades on, Pip’s passion for single cask whisky in its purest form is now shared with almost 40,000 members across the world.

The 1.9.8.3 Collection spells out the year that the Society was founded and features bottles of whisky from the first, ninth, eight and third distilleries that is has bottled from. The collection harks back to the Society’s first bottling, with Cask No. 1.282: Magic Shadow Show from the Speyside distillery where it all began in 1983.

Cask No. 9.274: Toffee Apple Orchard is a 19-year-old classic Sweet, Fruity & Mellow flavour profile bottling. Cask No. 8.43: Shaded By Flowers is from one of the Society’s less commonly seen distilleries, renowned for its use of sherry cask maturation, and Cask No. 3.348: Mellifluous Quince is a Society favourite from an Islay distillery treasured for its perfumed smoke.

We’re so proud of this collection. It represents four decades of outstanding single cask whisky and celebrates our curious coding system.

Paying tribute to the founding year of the Society in 1983, the four bottlings have some quirky and interesting liquid inside too. One that really jumps out for me is Cask No. 8.43: Shaded By Flowers. This is seven years old and it’s the first bottling we’ve seen from this distillery since 2006, a welcome return for distillery number 8.
– Euan Campbell: Head of Whisky Creation at the Society

With 50 years of Tayforth and 40 years of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, what a great time to get together and celebrate shinty and whisky, two of Scotland’s finest traditions, both of which are united by passion and heritage. We hope to see a few Society members attending our games very soon!
– Duncan Martin: Tayforth Shinty Club

WHISKY CLUB AND EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL GET INTO THE 40TH-ANNIVERSARY SPIRIT!

Val McDermid during recording of the SMWS’s Whisky Talk podcast

As both organisations turn 40, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has partnered with the Book Festival featuring whisky fan and bestselling crime writer Val McDermid!

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is to be the headline sponsor for international crime writing sensation Val McDermid’s appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August 2023.

Globally bestselling Scottish author Val McDermid’s event at the Book Festival on 21 August, in conversation with Peggy Hughes, is set to prove a major draw for festivalgoers, with audiences also able to tune in online from all over the world.

The event partnership is one of a year-long series of special events and collaborations to mark the 40th anniversary of the world’s leading whisky club’s foundation in Edinburgh in 1983, since when it has grown to encompass nearly 40,000 members across the globe. The activities will all be inspired by the Society’s founder Pip Hills’ maverick outlook.

As well as sponsoring McDermid’s event and providing whisky for the Authors’ Yurt on site at the Book Festival, the SMWS will be launching a new monthly book club at its venues offering the opportunity to explore different books, authors and drams together; members have long enjoyed relaxing with a good book and a dram in the Society’s congenial Members’ Rooms.

One of the first book club events will spotlight the re-launch of The Founder’s Tale – a book capturing the story of how Hills created the Society 40 years ago.

Like the SMWS, the Book Festival’s fascinating story also began in 1983, with whisky fan and long-time SMWS member McDermid having appeared every year at the festival since her debut in 1983. McDermid is a long-term member of the SMWS and appeared in its Whisky Talk podcast in 2022.

Since its inception, the Book Festival has become the largest celebration of the written word on Earth, with around 250,000 visits and over 500 events each year.

As we raise a glass to 40 years of our whisky, along with the Book Festival we mark a special birthday in 2023, and books and drams are the perfect pairing. We’re thrilled to partner the festival to showcase one of Scotland’s best-known and admired authors.

We know Val’s a devoted whisky fan too, as well as a seasoned member of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. We often see our members in our Members’ Rooms in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London savouring our limited-edition, seriously delicious drams over a good book. It’s a glorious way to while away an hour. Which is why – as part of our celebration of all things books – we will be launching our own Book Club in our Members’ Rooms – as well as meeting people at the Book Festival.

This will be a terrific event on 21 August – we can’t wait to introduce more people at Edinburgh International Book Festival to our whisky and explain why it’s great to be part of this community – the world’s leading whisky club.
– Rebecca Hamilton: ASC Chief Marketing and Experience Officer for The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

Robert Burns famously said ‘Freedom and whisky gang thegither’. I’d say books and whisky gang thegither, and that’s what we’ll be demonstrating at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August, when I’ll be talking to Peggy Hughes about my life in writing.
– Val McDermid

For four decades, Edinburgh International Book Festival has ignited imaginations, sparking literary passions and connecting readers with exceptional stories. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are thrilled to raise a glass to this milestone by partnering with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

Val McDermid is one of Scotland’s great masters of the crime genre, and a firm festival favourite. Together, with The Scotch Malt Whisky Society in this milestone year, we invite audiences to a celebration of storytelling, blending the power of words to kindle imaginations.
– Nick Barley: Director of Edinburgh International Book Festival

Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon!

It’s National Bourbon Day!

And to celebrate Whisky-Me have kindly sent me a sample of Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon to try!
Cheers @whisky_me_! and @yellowstonebourbon

The original family recipe was resurrected in 2010

Named after the Yellowstone National Park, award-winning Yellowstone Select Bourbon is a small batch of four and seven-year aged straight Kentucky bourbon whiskey made with locally grown white corn, rye, malt and limestone water.

First produced by Master Distiller, Steve Beam’s ancestors in 1872, Yellowstone was Kentucky’s biggest selling bourbon in the 1960s. The original family recipe was resurrected in 2010 by Steve Beam and his brother Paul Beam with the first barrel filled in 2015.

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon (46.5%)

Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a delicate fusion of flavours from seventh-generation distillers, this straight bourbon features a handpicked blend of 4- and 7-year-old bourbons, for an exclusive small-batch whiskey that honours its deep family origins.

Yellowstone Bourbon is crafted at Limestone Branch distillery, Kentucky which has been around since the start of the Kentucky bourbon business.

Yellowstone Select: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Mossburn Releases Strictly Limited Single Malt Vintage Cask Whiskies!

May 18, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Mossburn Single Malt Vintage Cask releases!

Mossburn Distillers & Bottlers Limited is releasing a series of four new strictly limited vintage cask single malts for 2023 that were matured with care and bottled in their prime, straight from the cask!

These batches of vintage cask single malts are carefully sourced from some of Scotland’s lesser-known distilleries which are renowned for their flavourful characteristics. This collection is designed to encourage whisky aficionados to look beyond the obvious and discover some fine drams destined to be savoured and shared with those that know and love Scotch.

The perfect gift for that whisky lover you’re not sure what to get, these hard-to-find vintage cask single malt whiskies from Mossburn Distillers, producers of Skye’s Torabhaig Single Malt and the Hebridean peated blend Caisteal Chamuis, have been matured, finished and bottled in a way that enhances the character of the spirit.

Two of the single malts in the 2023 collection have been finished in casks designed to either temper the power of the spirit or accentuate its flavour. All are released only when ready for optimal drinking, with minimal intervention, and bottled either at batch strength or 46% abv, with no chill filtering or colouring.

The master blender of this collection, Neil Macleod Mathieson, has specifically selected these barrels from Mossburn’s ageing warehouses, where many single malts lie slowly maturing until worthy of release. Each batch exhibits all the hallmarks of balance, depth and complexity that fine single malts can deliver.

While we bottle, distil and blend whisky, we’re whisky lovers first and foremost. And with the Mossburn Single Malt Vintage Cask releases, the idea is to bring something special to market.

Here, we allowed the spirit to sing, and sometimes this involved us showing restraint and just leaving it be until ready to release. This was the case with the beguiling, honeyed beeswax notes of Mossburn No. 33 Blair Athol Bourbon Cask 12-years-old, bottled straight from its original Bourbon Barrels, and the sweet spice and marzipan character of Mossburn Vintage Cask No. 34 Strathmill, which spent its whole life in Virgin European Oak.

We’ve used the grapey, fragrant sweetness of Moscatel casks to temper the full-bodied meaty character of Benrinnes 2008 No. 31 and added a fruity raspberry softness to the fragrant, natural grassy spirit of Teaninich 2008 No. 32 with red wine casks. This is an approachable and eminently drinkable collection to be savoured by whisky lovers.
– Neil Macleod Mathieson: Master blender

The four whiskies are:-

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks no. 31 – Benrinnes Moscatel finish 14 years old, batch strength

Benrinnes is well known for its full-bodied, masculine character, and we felt that a Moscatel cask finish would not only bring some nice, sweet, grapey fruit but help tame the power as well.

The result was sufficiently well-balanced for us to decide to bottle at batch strength.

It is full and fruity on the palate with some red fruit and vinous notes evoking a degree of sweetness and light spice, finishing with a little extra dried fruit, prunes and a touch more oak and black pepper.

In short, a very complex and well-balanced whisky.

RRSP: £75.00

No of bottles: 1,800 bottles globally, 240 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 54.9%

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks no. 32 – Teaninich red wine finish 13 years old, batch strength

One of the very first whiskies we bottled was a batch strength Teaninich (No. 4), which was the best way we felt to retain its naturally linseed-like oily character.

So, we were pleased when we were able to bottle at batch strength here (No. 32) again. This time though we had added the extra dimension of a red wine finish.

It has a very precise bouquet of hay with a little “graininess” followed by toast, raspberry jam and cream. Complex on the palate with more red fruit notes integrated with malted cereal evolving into a very good long finish.

RRSP: £77.00

No of bottles: 1,900 bottles globally, 240 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 56.2%

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks No. 33 – Blair Athol Bourbon Cask 12 years old, batch strength

A naturally, beautifully balanced whisky – and so we again left it alone at batch strength. After a whole life spent in fresh first-fill Bourbon casks, we felt that the beguilingly beautiful beeswax notes were not to be messed with.

Aromas of honey, oak spice and toasted oats were a joy. The palate again had upfront honey and waxiness which developed into a rich, full spicy flavour with undertones of hazelnuts and oaky tannins. Not to be missed.

RRSP: £70.00

No of bottles: 1,900 bottles globally, 240 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 54.5%

Mossburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage Casks no. 34 – Strathmill virgin European oak cask, batch strength – 12 years old

The only reduced whisky of this tranche of four, we found that the vanilla and marzipan notes were actually enhanced by reduction, and so we offer this whole-life Virgin European Oak at 46% abv. In addition to the complex vanilla and marzipan characteristics, are notes of boiled sweets, oak, toffee, sweet spice and barley sugar.

RRSP: £65.00

No of bottles: 1,700 bottles globally, 228 bottles available in the UK

ABV: 46%

Nose: An opening note of rich apple and pear forms the structure for this release. Herbaceous fresh fruit begins to make its way as the whisky begins to open. Subtle tones of honey and warming spice develop over time. Peat remains delicate on the nose, bringing a dryness to this release.

Palate: The texture provided by a slow distillation and the influence of the Cognac oak allows for a buttery texture which continues throughout. Dried lemon and apricot combine with cinnamon and nutmeg which are held together by an influence of toasted oak and sweet peat smoke.

Finish: The depth of flavour that the Cognac casks have provided The Kilchoman spirit is unrivalled; dried fruits and marzipan make way to crystallised ginger, balancing sweet and spice. Lingering peat smoke is lightened with the influence of citrus oil making itself known across the palate.

32 CASK VATTING 15,100 BOTTLES 50% ABV 50PPM

The Cognac casks selected for this 2023 release allow our fruit-driven, citrus spirit style to balance with that of the Cognac oak.

There is a delicate balance to be found when working with Cognac casks; keeping the age of this release at a minimum of six years old ensures the flavours from the spirit and the cask are easily detected, neither dominates.
– Anthony Wills: Kilchoman Founder

“There is a delicate balance to be found when working with Cognac casks …” Anthony Wills – Kilchoman Founder

Fino Sherry Cask Matured

The 2023 limited edition Fino Sherry Cask Matured becomes Kilchoman’s second ever release to be matured in ex Fino sherry casks. Anthony and Robin hand-selected a total of 20 Fino Sherry Butts of which the spirit was distilled in 2018.

The Sherry butts were purchased from Bodega Jose y Miguel Martin (Spain) for their impeccable standard. Aged for a minimum of five years.

Nose: Elegant, dry peat smoke on the initial nosing, gradually opens to the unmistakable fruity character of Kilchoman. The distinct influence from the Fino Sherry casks provides dry, smoked oak which balances with the smoke found in the heavily peated Kilchoman malt. A lasting aroma of sweet butterscotch as the whisky begins to open.

Palate: Honeycomb sweetness can be found immediately on the palate, gradually giving way to rich toffee and caramel. The Kilchoman spirit brings together candied fruits and the fresh citrus found in the distillation. Flaked almonds and a delicate peat smoke remain throughout.

Finish: Long-lasting considered finish combining the malty spirit of Kilchoman, with the ripened citrus fruit profile provided by the Fino Sherry casks. A subtle peat smoke which has coated the palate right through now shares the finish with hints of dark chocolate.

20 CASK VATTING 15,650 BOTTLES 50% ABV 50PPM

The Fino Sherry maturation works incredibly well with our classic Kilchoman character. The 2023 release elevates the fragrant green apple, stewed fruits and sweet citrus while allowing for the unmistakeable Kilchoman peat smoke to linger on the palate.

Fino is another example of sherry casks working together, not against, our Kilchoman spirit!
– Anthony Wills

Innis & Gunn Releases Islay Whisky Cask Beer – Made In Collaboration With Laphroaig!

April 20, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

Innis & Gunn Islay Whisky Cask Beer – made in collaboration with Laphroaig!

Innis & Gunn, the multi-award-winning brewer from Edinburgh, has launched the 2023 iteration of its Innis & Gunn Islay Whisky Cask Beer – made in collaboration with Laphroaig!

First released in 2021, this is Innis & Gunn’s fastest ever selling limited-edition. And the 2022 release had the highest rate of sale of any craft 330ml bottle beer in Scotland.

Islay Whisky Cask Beer, a 7.4% Scottish red ale, is brewed by Innis & Gunn before every year being matured in a different way, always in Laphroaig casks. This produces a limited edition that continues to evolve while offering familiarity – yet with subtly different nuances:

In 2021, matured solely in Laphroaig 10YO casks;

In 2022, matured in rare Laphroaig ‘Quarter Casks’ which, being smaller casks, allowed a greater interaction between cask and beer;

The 2023 release of Laphroaig’s Islay Whisky Cask beer is set to offer a unique and intriguing tasting experience. The larger Laphroaig 10YO casks, which have been previously used for second fill Bourbon, will be utilized for the first 10 weeks of maturation, followed by 3 weeks in second fill Port casks. This combination allows drinkers to savor a double dose of Laphroaig’s renowned and highly sought-after flavors.

The resulting beer is a deep chestnut color with an attractive head upon pouring. The aroma is initially intense and heady, with a hint of peat smoke that gradually gives way to notes of chocolate, spiciness, heather, and coffee. The taste is a contrasting marriage of oak and malt sweetness, full-bodied with hints of dried red fruits, toasted malt, caramel, and Scottish ‘tablet’. The Islay Whisky Cask beer finishes with a slight dryness, leaving a soft aftertaste that delivers subtle smokiness.

For the best experience, it is recommended to pour the beer cold (between 1°C to 4°C) into a goblet glass and enjoy with a dram of Laphroaig for a complementary pairing. With its higher ABV and full flavor profile, Islay Whisky Cask beer also pairs well with a variety of foods.

This is my favourite expression of our collaboration with Laphroaig yet. The double maturation, and use of ex-port casks, has brought further depth to the beer and introduced sweet, fruity notes which are in delicious balance with the briny-smoky hallmark Laphroaig taste.

Both our brewing team, and the distillery team at Laphroaig really understand how to balance flavour and have pushed themselves this year to make something really special. This uncompromising beer unites brewing and distilling craftsmanship at its best.
– Dougal Gunn Sharp: Founder and Master Brewer, Innis & Gunn

Our collaboration with Innis & Gunn is as natural as it is exciting. At Laphroaig, we’ve spent over two centuries perfecting our unique and bold flavours. It requires an uncompromising and original brand to match it – enter Innis & Gunn!

I’ve always been a fan of Innis & Gunn, and this latest release does not disappoint. You’ll taste a whisper of peat along with a distinctive toasted malt note that comes from the Laphroaig cold smoking kilns, along with rich fruits and a long-lasting sweetness from the double matured port casks. The unmistakable refreshing citrus and orange rind flavours from the beer are followed by a warming finish with hints of oak and that classic understated bitterness that Innis & Gunn create so well. It’s a superb combination of cask, whisky and beer all perfectly balanced in flavour.
– Barry McAffer: Distillery Manager, Laphroaig

Innis & Gunn Islay Whisky Cask in its specially designed gift carton by Scottish artist, Scott Naismith, is available from 17th April 2023 via the Innis & Gunn online shop, priced at £6 per 330ml bottle; and for the first time appearing on shelf from June at Waitrose and Sainsbury’s nationwide, plus in Booths Supermarkets and in Tesco in Scotland at £5-6 per 330ml bottle.

Pioneers of cask maturation, Innis & Gunn was founded in 2003 by Master Brewer, Dougal Gunn Sharp with the launch of ‘The Original’, a single malt whisky cask matured Scottish golden beer, widely available in supermarkets and in export markets.

Innis & Gunn’s innovative NPD programme continues to push the boundaries of brewing in 2023 with five Limited Edition brews being unveiled throughout the year.

Sampling Fettercairn’s ‘Warehouse 14’ Limited Edition Whisky – The Last – But Certainly Not Least – Of Their “Warehouse Collection” Releases!

April 20, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

Fettercairn’s ‘Warehouse 14’ Limited Edition Whisky – The Last – But Certainly Not Least – Of Their “Warehouse Collection” Releases!

Fettercairn Distillery has released the fifth and final instalment of their ‘Warehouse Collection’, Warehouse 14. It is an experimental Limited Edition release, opening the doors to Warehouse 14 for the first time in the Collection’s journey!

The previous four releases in the Collection have been from Warehouse 2, but for this final release, Fettercairn has looked to a warehouse at the opposite side of the distillery. Warehouse 14 looks out on to the Cairngorms and is more exposed to the elements and changing seasons which has undoubtedly helped to shape this very special final release.

Fettercairn Warehouse 14 will complete the Warehouse Collection

Warehouse 14 has been crafted using a handpicked selection of first-fill and second-fill ex-Bourbon barrels. This release was initially created as an experiment in the unique Warehouse 14 by Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass and the Distillery Team. The recipe was finished in a mix of three different beer barrels – stout, dark ale and pale ale – each offering different flavour characteristics that enhance Fettercairn’s tropical house style.

Fettercairn’s signature house style, abundant with tropical fruit flavours and soft spice, is created by the unique cooling ring, which ensures only the purest vapours rise and produces the distinctive tropical characteristic, remains a feature of Warehouse 14 on the nose and on the palate.
For more information, my previous blog post on this release can be found here.

Fettercairn kindly sent me a sample of the ‘Warehouse 14’ to try. A hearty Cheers to fettercairnwhisky.com (@FettercairnWh) for the opportunity to sample this dram and also for sending some Joe & Seph’s tasty olive oil, sea salt and black pepper gourmet popcorn to go with it!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Fettercairn ‘Warehouse 14’ Single Malt Scotch Whisky (51.2%)

Limited Edition release, Non-Chill-Filtered and Natural Colour.

Nose: Sherbet sweet with apples and light tropical fruits which steadily grows over time. Creamy aromas with some woody notes add to a very inviting tasting ahead!

Palate: Initially there is creamy sweet tropical fruits and chocolate but it’s also quite spicy, peppery and savoury which comes to the front from an early stage.

Finish: The tropical fruitiness comes back much stronger at the finish and it’s very welcome! The spice is still there you can also add a little toffee as well. The finish is short and dry.

Overall: This dram has a higher ABV than the other warehouse releases and it’s very welcome! It gives more scope to the dram and opens up more tasting opportunities.
A satisfying finish to the collection!

Fettercairn Warehouse 14 completes the Warehouse Collection and is available at an RSP of £70. Available on a Limited Editon basis in limited selected markets including UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France.

Going forward Fettercairn is continuing their 18 and 16 Year Old annual releases as well as planning for next years 200 year anniversary which is in June 2024 (the oldest barrel in their warehouse is from 1962.)

“Jura Pale Ale Cask Edition”

Jura, the UK’s top malt brand, has introduced a new whisky called “Jura Pale Ale Cask Edition” to its ‘Cask Edition Series’!

Sampling “Join the great tumult” – Cask No: 146.2 From The SMWS – A Quiet Nose But The Palate More Than Makes Up For It!

Join the great tumult – Cask No: 146.2

The The SMWS “New Wave” releases are a celebration of new whisky distilleries with illustrations by Bob Dewar, the artist who was instrumental in defining The Society look when started 40 years ago and whose artwork still adorns the ceiling of The Society’s spiritual home at The Vaults in Leith!

A quiet nose but it’s palate more than makes up for it!

You can get the complete picture of these releases from my previous blog post here …

The SMWS has very kindly sent me one of these bottles to try – namely ‘Join the great tumult – Cask No: 146.2’ to try. (Thanks SMWS!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes: “Join the great tumult” – Cask No: 146.2 (62.2%)

Cask Type: 1st fill STR barrique
Origin: England
ABV: 62.2%
£79.50

Nose: It’s a shy one, this dram. It gives up it’s aromas slowly. But give it time and there’s toffee apples, muted spring flowers, creamy biscuit and some citrus.

Palate: Luxuriant mouthfeel with cane sugar sweetness, syrupy orchard fruits, a little lemon and do I detect a hint of blackcurrant?

Finish: Herby, grassy spice complete with punchy pepper and some honey sugariness keeping it in cosy company. A short finish completes the experience with some woody dryness.

Overall: Well this whisky has a quiet nose but it’s palate more than makes up for this! If you like sweet fruits, wisps of flowers and some savoury bite then this dram is certainly for you!
