Glenlivet – 21 Year Old Archive Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 21 Year Old Strength: 43% Summary: Sitting in the Glen of the same name, taking its water from the River Livet which feeds into the Spey, Glenlivet has been producing whisky since the days when only small scale domestic production was legal. George Smith (of George & JG Smith) was the first distiller in the Glen to produce legal whisky on a large scale, a choice which forced Smith to arm himself against the threat of attack from the illicit distillers in the region. A second challenge came in the form of the neighbouring whisky producers in the Glen (and outside the Glen) when they attempted to use the Glenlivet name to market their own whisky. With the courts on his side, Smith forced his neighbours to relinquish the name and today Glenlivet remains one of the most renowned whiskies in the world. As the best selling Scotch in the United States, Glenlivet enjoys a huge support for its whisky. A huge range of bottlings have appeared at auction and the choice for collectors is wide. The Glenlivet 21 Year Old Archive is a batch produced whisky using only hand-selected casks. It is a complex whisky with sherried and wood notes integrating seamlessly with the aromatic palette. Let the pleasure linger late into the night. Colour: amber with sparkling copper shades. Nose: opulent, mature. Sherry influence. An intricate array of fruit and wood. Christmas cake-like, sultanas, Maraschino cherry, thick-cut marmalade. Oak panels in an old church, a cedary touch. Balsamic spices, Cubèbe pepper. A hint of eucalyptus, tropical hardwood. Oak soon gives way to malty notes. Fruit and fibre cereal bowl, toasted granary bread. Citrussy freshness, orange and kumquat peel. Some cakey notes, a reminder of Grand Marnier soufflé. Taste: unctuous. Mouth-coating, almost syrupy. Full-bodied. Sultana cake, ginger biscuits. Oak holds the reins back, releasing a drying spiciness. Cinnamon and ginger, a touch of hot paprika. Walnut and raisins, dark chocolate. Finish: everlasting, warming. Nutty. Toasted hazelnuts. A full layer of liquorice. |
