Tomintoul – 16 Year Old Single Malt Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 16 Year Old Strength: 40% Summary: Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle. The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp. Nose: a fruity concoction of apples and pears topped with vanilla ice cream; even the vaguest hint of something smoky – one of the noses of the year! Taste: soft, indeed every bit as gentle as the label promises, as the light oils coat the palate with a fabulously intense and delicately sweetened barley skin. The skeleton is playful oak; Finish: a wonderful, multi-layered interplay between malt and oak-vanillas. Long, curiously spice-free, increasingly dry but hugely sophisticated Balance: confirms Tomtintoul’s ability to dice with greatness. |

Tomintoul – Old Ballantruan “the Peated Malt” Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: N/A Strength: 50% Summary: “Old Ballantruan” Speyside Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky is distilled in the traditional manner in the prestigious Speyside Glenlivet region, and unusually for this district, it is made with heavily-peated malted barley to impart a distinctive and unique flavour. “Old Ballantruan” owes its name to an exceptional source of the purest of waters, the Ballantruan Spring, nestling in the Cromdale Hills close to Tomintoul, the highest village in the Scottish Highlands. After ‘sleeping’ for many years in hand-picked oak barrels, this whisky has been bottled at 50% volume and without any chill-filtration in order to retain its layered and integrated peaty flavours. |
