Chivas 12 Made for Gentlemen by Bremont
Chivas Regal has collaborated with award-winning luxury British watch brand, Bremont, to create the next installment of its much sought-after Made for Gentlemen Limited Edition collection.
It sees the release of additional collectors’ items in the form of 12 Chivalry watches, created by Bremont and Chivas to celebrate excellence and precision in luxury.
In keeping with Chivas Regal’s spirit of generosity, the exclusive Bremont ‘Chivalry’ watches will be auctioned for charities around the world.
Admirers of luxury watches and whisky will have the opportunity to bid for one of these watches by participating in an online auction taking place from 22nd October – 9th November 2014 on www.chivas.com/bremont, with proceeds being donated to The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme.
The Chivas 12 Made for Gentlemen by Bremont limited edition gift tin houses a bottle of Chivas 12 and features deconstructed watch elements to showcase the elegant and complex engineering of Bremont chronometers.
The polished steel Bremont ‘Chivalry’ watch, features a piece of oak cask used in the maturation of whiskies for Chivas Regal, the signature of James and John Chivas etched on the rotor of the timepiece and the Chivas crest subtly embossed on the dial. An engraved copper plate, taken from a retired Scotch whisky copper still, sits on the leather presentation pouch.
Richard Black, Global Brand Director for Chivas Regal says: “Over the last three years, The Chivas Made for Gentlemen series has gone from strength to strength, resonating with modern gentlemen around the world who demand substance and style from luxury experiences and products. With this latest edition, we’re celebrating not only the style and handcrafted quality of Chivas and Bremont, but also the spirit of generosity for which John and James Chivas were renowned, and that is increasingly valued in today’s competitive world. We’re delighted with the exquisite designs and we’re confident that Chivas 12 Made for Gentlemen by Bremont will be well received by discerning whisky fans around the world.”
Nick English, Co-Founder of Bremont, adds: “For me, the collaboration with Chivas was a genuine meeting of minds. We are all dedicated and passionate about keeping traditions of craftsmanship alive and we are also focused upon leaving a positive legacy. Bremont watches are ‘Tested Beyond Endurance’ and Giles and I have been blown away by the level of skill that Chivas Master Blender, Colin Scott, deploys in channeling nature and time in blending their Scotch whiskies.”
Grant’s New Online Campaign Launched
Grant’s has launched a new global campaign entitled ‘#IOU’, which sees the brand move away from its traditional product-led communications in favour of fresh lifestyle content targeted at Millenials.
In a shift from the traditional TVC, #IOU will begin with a short film distributed solely online. This content will be the first consumer-facing activation of Grant’s Stand Together brand positioning and aims to inspire fans to acknowledge the people who have helped them achieve great things in life. Thanks to a more focused approach to online content, Grant’s has already benefitted from a huge spike in social engagement, with a community growth of over 350 percent on the Grant’s Facebook page since 1st January 2014.
Created by London agency FCB Inferno and directed by Bafta-nominated director Yann Demange, with Stink London, the short challenges the notion of individual success and reflects the reality that none of us have made it this far on our own. The #IOU film follows a group of friends as they support each other through a series of life affirming experiences to come out the other side stronger and more successful. The film ends with the thought-provoking question ‘If you’ve got this far in life without owing anybody anything, how far have you really got?’. Cult artist Whitey, whose work has been featured on hit TV series’ Breaking Bad and The Sopranos, collaborated with music company Madplanet to provide the accompanying soundtrack.
Grant’s Global Brand Director, Shane Hoyne, whose team was responsible for developing the new brand campaign commented, “As one of the most enjoyed blended Scotch whiskies in the world, we wanted to talk about success in a way that stayed true to our heritage but also resonated with a broader demographic. Like the people we aim to inspire, we have been supported and guided by a huge team of people in bringing something new and exciting to the table and we’re very proud to share the outcome.”
“This year has been an ambitious one for the Grant’s team with the roll out of a new global brand positioning Stand Together, the diversification of the Grant’s range and an expansion to exciting new markets. 2015 will continue in a similar vein with ground breaking innovation and the launch of additional ranges in the coming months.”

Whisky Tasting: LAPHROAIG LIVE 2014!
Wednesday 24th September saw the eighth annual Laphroaig Live broadcast from Sweden.
Streamed live from a tiny island called Fjäderholmarna, which is part of the archipelago just outside Stockholm, it was uniquely Scandinavian in flavour.
Of course this may have had something to do with the show’s location, a famous smokery restaurant called Rökeriet!
This years panel of whisky experts had the pleasure of sharing four phenomenal Laphroaigs:-
- The latest Global expression called Select.
- This year’s much acclaimed Cairdeas finished in Amontillado casks.
- A unique 12 year old triple casked Nordic special.
- A fourth sample that was decided by a Friends of Laphroaig online vote – the Laphroaig 18 Year Old in this case.
As always, the Distillery Manager, John Campbell was a member of the expert tasting panel accompanied by three famous Swedish personalities: Nour el Refai – a comedian, TV personality, host and a well-known Swedish radio presenter, Peter Borg – chairman of the Swedish Whisky Association and Håkan Dahlberg – a prolific Swedish whisky blogger of I Love Whisky.
The show ended with promises and hints of some great things coming for Laphroaig’s 200th. Anniversary next year, including long-hoped for 15 and 21 year old single malts.
No prizes for guessing where Laphroaig Live will be held next year then – Roll on 2015!
The Laphroaig range can be seen here!
Tasting Notes – Laphroaig The latest Global expression called Select
Laphroaig Select takes its name from the special selection of American and European casks, chosen for their unique character that they give during maturation.
Olorosso sherry butts, straight American white oak (non-filled with bourbon), PX seasoned hogs heads, Quarter Casks and finally First Filled Bourbon Casks were all used to vary cask maturation techniques enabling the creation of 6 new flavour combinations that were then tested by ‘The Friends of Laphroaig’.
From this they chose their favourite which then became LAPHROAIG SELECT.
![]() |
Nose: Lovely smoke and peat hit straight away! Sweet, heathery overtones
Palate: Sweet sherry floral flavours with a peaty backnote. Finish: Mild spice n’ pepper, lingering warm finish. Overall: Another hit for this ever popular dram – but you need to be a ‘Friend of Laphroaig’ to purchase and enjoy it – but that’s not a great hardship! |
Tasting Notes – Laphroaig This year’s much acclaimed Cairdeas
A firm favourite with ‘The Friends of Laphroaig’ is each Cairdeas release. This year is no exception with the Cairdeas being a Laphroaig that has been double matured first in “first fill” ex-bourbon casks then in Amontillado hogsheads for one year.
![]() |
Nose: Sweet sherry notes with rich chocolate.
Palate: Sweet, christmassy cake flavours with added cinnamon. Finish: Smooth, sweet sherry with a mild finish. Overall: There is muted smokiness and peat – surprising on such a powerful spirit – but that doesn’t mean that this release isn’t morish! |
Tasting Notes – Laphroaig 12 year old Nordic special
A special creation for Laphroaig’s legion of Nordic fans using the traditional 10 year old as a starting point and triple casking over a further 2 year period.
Not currently available, it is due for release in the Scandinavian market at the end of the year.
![]() |
Nose: Peat, smokiness and heathery scents with a sea tang.
Palate: Classic 10YO Laphroaig peat & smoke with a nice sweet sherriness, shades of grapefruit. Finish: Spiciness abounds with quite fierce pepper – but don’t worry – it compliments the sweetness! Overall: This is going to be a popular dram – but you may need to travel to buy and enjoy it – that’s if the Nordic fans are willing to let it go! |
Tasting Notes – Laphroaig 18 Year Old ( 40% )
A true classic and one chosen by ‘The Friends of Laphroaig’ to be the fourth malt to be tasted during the nights show. Last, but certaunly not least, this 18YO was worth all the waiting in the world for!
Made in limited quantities each year and therefore only able to be savoured by a fortunate few.
![]() |
Nose: Peat smoke with a lovely caramel toffee.
Palate: Sherry and sultana sweetness, chocolate and banana. Finish: Very smooth – the famous peat takes a partial backseat for sweetness, chocolate and heather! Overall: A simply stunning dram – treat with respect – there’s not much of it about! |
The Laphroaig range can be seen here!
Many thanks to @markettiers4dc for the samples and, of course, @Laphroaig without whom.
The Glenlivet Launches The World’s First Collection Of 50 Year Old Single Malt Whiskies!
The Glenlivet has released The Winchester Collection: the world’s first series of rare and precious 50 year old single malt Scotch whiskies from the single malt that started it all.
“Vintage 1964” is the first release from this exclusive collection, which is anticipated to become one of the most sought after and priceless whisky collections in the world.
Just 100 bottles of this remarkable Speyside single malt, priced at $25,000 each, will go on sale around the globe, with the very first bottle – Bottle No 1 – going on sale at one of the world’s most prestigious retailers, Harrods, this October.
An undisclosed number of further releases from The Winchester Collection will then follow, with “Vintage 1966” confirmed to be next in line.
No expense or attention to craftsmanship has been spared in creating the perfect vessel to house the whisky, with each element handcrafted by artisans from the British Isles, featuring hand-blown glass and the inclusion of precious materials such as rose gold and ‘Cairngorm Stone’.
The spirit inside lays claim to 50 years of unrivalled knowledge, care and craft, which started when Captain Bill Smith-Grant – the last distilling descendent of The Glenlivet’s founder, George Smith – laid this whisky down to mature in April 1964.
It was soon after identified as a whisky of exceptional promise, and was cared for by no fewer than seven Master Distillers as it slowly and steadily developed the signature flavours that make The Glenlivet an enduring benchmark of quality.
It is under the guidance of current Master Distiller, Alan Winchester – from whom the collection takes its name – that this precious Vintage has been deemed ready to be enjoyed by only the most ardent and discerning of single malt connoisseurs, bottled at cask strength (42.3%) in June 2014.
Alan had this to say: “This release marks a milestone for The Glenlivet. Casks of this age and quality are such a rare thing these days that I’m immensely proud to introduce the first of these rare Vintages of preserved stocks from the distillery’s rich past. They’re a testament to our legacy of excellence and to those who have nurtured this whisky over the years, including Captain Bill Smith-Grant, who played such a pivotal role introducing our single malt to the world.”
Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for The Glenlivet, said: “The release of The Winchester Collection sets a new benchmark in single malt. We are excited to share this unparalleled spirit, the product of 50 years of craftsmanship, with whisky lovers and collectors alike. Vintage 1964 allows us to tell a new chapter in The Glenlivet’s rich history and is a fitting tribute to those who shaped Speyside’s original single malt whisky.”
The Winchester Collection Vintage 1964 – Official Tasting Notes
Nose: The perfect marriage of spirit and cask releases a wonderfully rich aroma of fruity pear and peach nectar, which envelops the nose. Complemented by juicy, sweet raisins, dark chocolate and a fondant orange crème, intermingled with a tantalising honeycomb crunch sweetness that gives incredible depth.
Palate: Bursting with luscious fruit flavours of ripe pears and oranges, black cherries and smooth creamy toffee, resulting in a fantastically velvety texture. In the background, caramelised sugar and candy flavours elevate the richness of the taste.
Finish: Exceptionally smooth and luxurious, lingering on the palate and in memory for eternity.
Glenfiddich Launches This Year’s Malt Mastermind Competition!
Glenfiddich has announced the launch of this year’s Malt Mastermind competition.
Returning for the fifth year, the competition calls on bartenders to showcase their flair and creativity by crafting a signature serve, this year using Glenfiddich 14 Year Old Rich Oak, Glenfiddich 15 Year Old or Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Distillery Edition.
For the first time, the competition will focus on the brand’s 15 Year Old variant.
The judging panel will also include two new judges this year.
Joining Mark Thomson (who helped judge last year’s Malt Mastermind) will be Kirsten Grant Meikle, a William Grant & Sons family member and Director of Prestige at the company and Roman Foltan from The Artesian in London.
The final will take place in London on 17th November 2014. All finalists will be required to showcase their serve at the final, as well as take part in an additional challenge to be revealed on the day.
The inaugural wild card entry will be Jamie Ireland from G&V Royal Mile Hotel who reached the final last year and impressed the judges with his creativity when making his ‘Scotsman, Frenchman and an Englishman’ serve.
Sarah Harding, Senior Brand Manager for Glenfiddich, said: “Year on year, the calibre of bartenders entering the competition has only improved with some exceptional serves and creativity showcased.
We are looking for someone who really understands the pioneering spirit of Glenfiddich and someone who has great knowledge of the category, the complex structure of the liquid and how flavours can be used in serves to really complement the whisky and create interesting drinks.
We are also excited to have Kirsten and Roman on board for the first time too. Both bring exceptional levels of knowledge and expertise to the table and we have no doubt, will inspire and enthuse our finalists.”
Bartenders wanting to enter the competition should visit www.glenfiddich.com/uk/explore/malt-mastermind.
They will be required to complete a short online entry form, including details of the serve they would create using the Glenfiddich 14 or 15 Year Old variants.

Whisky Tasting: Kilchoman’s Port Cask Matured!
Well I think I’m in love!
I’ve just been sampling the latest offering from Kilchoman, their Port Cask Matured.
In my humble opinion I think it’s one of the finest drams I’ve ever tasted – a pure delight from nose to swallow!
Kilchoman’s Port Cask Matured release, the first of its kind from the distillery, is fully matured in ex-Ruby Port casks allowing for the full influence of the port casks to be imparted into the whisky.
Anthony Wills, managing director of Kilchoman, said: “We experimented with a number of different cask types to see which ones worked for a full maturation term and the ruby port casks are exceptional at just 3 years old.
The palate has a wonderful balance of port influence but maintains much of Kilchoman’s signature characteristics”
The Port Cask Matured release is non chill-filtered and is bottled at 55% ABV.
If love be a fleeting thing then I’m afraid this is true in the case of the Kilchoman Port Cask Matured – they have only released 1,000 cases and most online stockists seem to be out of stock already.
At the time of scribing only Abbey Whisky still holds stocks but they are on a strictly one bottle per customer arrangement – I think these will go very quickly.
So, don’t be tardy, grab one today and relish 70cl. of liquid love!
Tasting Notes – Kilchoman Port Cask Matured ( Cask strength – 55% )
|
Nose: Rich, glorious mahogany colour. A smokey peat that hits you straight away followed by Vanilla and chocolate.
Palate: Peat and smoke with a lustrous sweetness, shades of fruity cake mixture and a citrus zing. Finish: Mellow warmth, smokiness and spice all lovingly blended – lingering sherry sweet provides a long finish. Overall: The smoothness belies the 55% strength from this malt – it is gorgeous! If you can get hold of a bottle – do! You will not regret it. One of the best drams I’ve ever tasted! |
Many thanks to Kilchoman (@Kilchoman05) for sending the sample!
