The Teeling “Revival” Twitter Tasting – A Glorious Taste Of Two Halves!

November 16, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

“The Revival” - limited to only 10,000 bottles!

“The Revival” – limited to only 10,000 bottles!

The Teeling “Revival” Twitter Tasting made a gloomy Monday a lot brighter this week as Steve from The Whisky Wire took us through another new release, this time from the well renowned Teeling Whiskey Distillery.

The Teeling “Revival” is a commemorative bottling to mark the opening of its new distillery in Dublin. Released as a limited edition 15 Year Old Single Malt, it marks the opening of their new distillery, the first in Dublin for over 125 years.

The Revival 15 Year Old Single Malt Irish whiskey was distilled in 1999, being matured exclusively in ex-Rum casks and bottled at 46% with no chill filtration to create a unique Irish whiskey taste experience.

This new release is part of an updated Teeling Vintage Reserve Collection which is made up of small, limited batch releases of very old and rare Irish Single Malt whiskeys.

There will be three different bottlings ranging in age and price points. The Revival being the first followed by a 24 and 33 year old bottling of Irish Single Malt whiskey.

The opening of our new distillery was a major milestone in the history of Teeling Whiskey. It took three years of planning, hard work and significant capital investment, but now Teeling Whiskey is finally home.
– Jack Teeling: Teeling Whiskey Company founder

The Revival 15 Year Old is limited to only 10,000 bottles and will retail for around £85.00.

Available in Ireland through the Teeling Distillery Gift Shop in Newmarket Dublin 8, Dublin Airport and the Celtic Whiskey Stop, it will then be rolled out to international markets such as the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy and Australia.

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #TeelingWhiskey on Twitter.

Here are my thoughts …

Tasting Notes – Teeling ‘The Revival’ 15 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey (46%)

Nose: Some nice woody notes right there at the beginning, then green apples, a touch of vanilla and caramel with sugary tropical fruits – all very inviting! Cereal notes come thru right at the end.

Palate: Rich, sweet, tropical fruits: pineapple, mango et al. Serious bit of pepper & spice there also: warming my cockles etc!

Finish: Grapefruit mixed in with vanilla and syrup – all yummy! ‘Tis a short finish but a hot n’ spicy, peppery one – with a touch of fruity sweetness to cool the journey 🙂

Overall: A dram of two distinct halves: So sweet with a little spice that gives way to very spicy tempered with some sweetness.

A very pleasant way to spoil one’s tastebuds on a Monday eve!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and the team at Teeling (@TeelingWhiskey) for sending the samples and without whom!

Amongst the new arrivals this week from Edencroft are a special set of Glenrothes whiskies.

They are seriously discounted in price when compared to the prices you will pay from other online retailers!

New Arrivals

Glenrothes / 1988
Glenrothes / 1988

£ 187.50
Country: Scotland
Region: Speyside
Age:
Strength:

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.
Vintages from the 1970's and 1980's are increasingly hard to come by. The Vintage 1988 is of that rare breed. Never before bottled the Vintage has benefited from more than two decades maturing in a combination of Spanish and American oak; previously seasoned with both sherry and whisky.

Glenrothes / 1995
Glenrothes / 1995

£ 47.95
Country: Scotland
Region: Speyside
Age:
Strength:

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.
The Vintage 1995 was the first ever Vintage specifically laid in cask with the intention of, when mature, bottling as The Glenrothes.
With about 30% from first fill American Sherry oak delivering butterscotch: Spice and dried fruits from 1st fill Spanish Sherry oak and the rest from refill casks giving the characteristic Glenrothes balance and complexity of flavour. Arguably it is preferable post-dinner when conversation is in full flow.
It fulfils every anticipation of The Glenrothes: A "come-hither" nose filled with exotic spices is followed by a citrus and fruity richness coated in honeyed butterscotch. These flavours, and more, are all delivered on the palate culminating with a long, rich and satisfying, fruity spiciness.

Glenrothes / 1998
Glenrothes / 1998

£ 41.50
Country: Scotland
Region: Speyside
Age:
Strength:

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.
The Vintage 1998 is the next Core Vintage to follow the Vintage 1991 and 1994. It is the first of the vintages that we have bottled that was expressly laid down at origin to be bottled as Glenrothes on maturity and as such has a greater availability of stock than any of the previous bottlings.
This is also Gordon Motion's first bottling as Malt Master and he describes it as: "It's said that pictures speak a thousand words and this is like Carmen Miranda's hat in a bottle. Tropical fruits lead with pineapple and mango developing into sweet bananas, coconut and classic Glenrothes vanilla pods."

Glenrothes / 2001
Glenrothes / 2001

Country: Scotland
Region: Speyside
Age:
Strength:

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.
The Vintage 2001 bottled in 2012 (Edition 1) was selected from a variety of casks to deliver soft but stimulating and conversational properties. It combines the maturity of oaky vanilla, with the fullness of ripe black cherries and has a lingering, typically Glenrothes finish of soft spices.
It has wonderful length and depth, hugely satisfying and an excellent demonstration of the Malt Master's skill and dedication to the art of wood management.

There are many factors we consider in determining an expression worthy of bottling and sharing with you. Of course, we've always been proud of the fact that we have our sherry casks made to specification in Jerez, southern Spain even though it costs around five times as much as American ex-bourbon equivalents. Now, we can offer you the chance to sample, without distraction, the unique dried fruit and resinous character that underpins the sherry top notes for which these casks are famed.

Douglas Laing / The Christmas Big Peat 2011
Douglas Laing / The Christmas Big Peat 2011

£ 55.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age:
Strength: 57.8%

Summary: HISTORICALLY WE CALL THIS – WHISPER IT – A VATTED MALT, BLONDE IN THE BOTTLE – BUT WITH A BIG PEAT KICK A SMALL BATCH BOTTLING TRADITIONALLY UNCHILL FILTERED CONTAINING ONLY ISLAY MALT WHISKIES! But what exactly is a Vatted Malt? It is what the Scotch Whisky industry has traditionally called “a marriage of Malts”. Big Peat contains Malt Whisky ONLY from the island of Islay – some say it’s the ultimate taste of Islay! Big Peat is a feisty Islay character has a sweet side too – ‘he’ carries a big peaty (“phenolic”), beachy, oceanic, rather ashy selection of malts only from the island of Islay. We do not chill filter – we prefer a more old fashioned traditional approach – so you will detect a massive amplification of sea-faring qualities on the nose, palate, and finish Nose: just one of those noses where it takes a tremendous act of will to put the glass down…the interplay between the salts and sugars, the counterweights between the different varieties of phenols themselves; Taste: when the delivery strikes home with the oils, phenols and sugars in immediate harmony, you know you are in for an experience. The question is: can it keep this quality to the end? Finish: …indeed it can! In fact, it improves and so complex and tantalising are those astonishing Demerara and peaty riches, it is hard to quite know where the end begins. A number of teasing bourbon tones, on the liquorice and hickory side – perhaps with a hint of honey – stokes the fireside complexity further…; Balance: I haven’t got a television these days as my life is simply too busy. And with entertainment like this in the glass to keep you occupied, who needs one…? I doubt if any Christmas special on the box came remotely close to matching this…! Country/Region: Scotland/Islay. ABV: 57.8%. Ratings: 96 Points – Jim Murray's 2013 Whisky Bible. Tasting Notes: © Jim Murray's / 2013 Whisky Bible.

Green Spot / Château Léoville Barton Edition
Green Spot / Château Léoville Barton Edition

£ 50.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: Country: Ireland.
ABV: 46%.
Unit: 70cl.
Green Spot Château Léoville Barton is the latest edition to the Spot whiskey family. This whiskey represents the coming together of two historic families, two stories of Irish endeavour and enterprise who together are the inspiration for this special edition whiskey.
Initially matured in a traditional mix of ex-Oloroso sherry, new Bourbon and ex-Bourbon barrels the whiskeys were then transferred into the ex-Bordeaux wine casks for between 12 and 24 months. This imparted distinctive, floral flavours of varying intensity, resulting in a perfectly balanced whiskey.
Celebrating an Irish heritage, the collaboration between Green Spot and Château Léoville Barton is not just the coming together of two unique stories, it is the fusion of two unique histories that as one deliver an exceptional whiskey.
Nose: It is the contribution of the French oak which drives the initial aroma adding some crisp woodland notes to the spicy Single Pot Still character. The wine seasoning brings a delicate touch of floral perfume and a hint of ripe berries such as raspberries and strawberries, these are in addition to the orchard fruits typical of Green Spot.
Taste: The familiar mouth coating effect is a very satisfying balance of oak and spices. Some vanilla sweetness works in harmony with the dry wine influence, while the fresh orchard fruits and French oak combine effortlessly with barley grains to complete the complexity.
Finish: The rich French oak character is slow to fade leaving the wine and spices of France and Ireland with the last word.

Midleton / Barry Crockett Legacy
Midleton / Barry Crockett Legacy

£ 150.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: As custodian of the legendary Middleton style for over three decades, how fitting is it that the first ongoing bottling of a Single Pot Still whiskey under the Midleton name, pays tribute to our Master Distiller, Barry Crockett. This expression represents Barry’s personal selection of old and elegant Pot Still whiskeys, exclusively matured in American bourbon barrels. Bearing the name of the celebrated second generation Midleton Master Distiller, Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy represents a selection of pot still whiskeys which have been matured exclusively in American bourbon barrels with a subtle contribution from a pot still distillate which has been matured in an unseasoned or virgin American barrel.
Nose: spices nip and thrust; delicate fruits form a series of gentle layers; a light bourbon liquorice also adds depth;
Taste: the delivery provides the sweetness missing from the nose but only after an early surge of oak and soft oils. The middle ground is a battlefield between spices and peachy fruit, with just a touch of honey moving in when it thinks no one is watching;
Finish: relatively short and duller than you might expect. The caramels cap the higher points and though spices rumble there is little for it to echo against;
Balance: another fabulous Pot Still, very unusual for its clever use of the varied ages of oak to form strata of intensity. One very sophisticated whiskey.
Country: Ireland.
ABV: 46%.
Unit: 70cl.
Ratings: 94 Points – Jim Murray's 2013 Whisky Bible.

Midleton / Dair Ghaelach
Midleton / Dair Ghaelach

£ 185.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength:
70cl

Summary: Country: Ireland.
ABV: %.
Unit: 70cl.
Midleton Dair Ghaelach. It means, quite simply, Irish Oak. This whiskey has been matured in barrels made from sustainable virgin Irish Oak grown on the Ballaghtobin Estate in Co. Kilkenny and what the oak brings to this special whiskey is the true and unique flavour of Ireland. Its provenance as individual as its fragrance, its journey from grain to glass as distinguished as its finish, this is a whiskey like no other.
The Irish Oak casks are filled with a select range of 15 to 22 year old Single Pot Still distillates. Nosed and tasted every month by our Master Blender, Billy Leighton, and Master of Maturation, Kevin O’Gorman, after almost a year, Midleton Dair Ghaelach was judged to be beautifully balanced; subtly yet unmistakably flavoured to perfection by the Irish Oak that gives it its name. Midleton Dair Ghaelach is one of a kind as it is our first Irish whiskey to be matured in home-grown Irish Oak.
NOSE: The crisp Pot Still spices are seamlessly enriched by the woodland fragrances of the Irish Oak. Sweet vanilla notes are given depth by some chocolate honeycomb and coffee beans, whilst the balancing rich fruit aromas of red berries, pineapple and ripe banana compliment the subtle aromatic oils.
TASTE: The typical Pot Still spices are fortified by the Irish Oak character. Robust yet mellow, clove and cinnamon give way to dairy fudge and milk chocolate sweetness combining with a touch of stewed apple.
FINISH: An exceptionally long finish, with some sweet spices slowly fading, leaving the final bow to the Irish Oak.

Redbreast / 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey
Redbreast / 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey

£ 40.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 40.%
70cl

Summary: One of the most decorated Irish whiskeys, Redbreast is the largest selling Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey in the world. Regarded as the definitive expression of traditional Single Pot Still whiskey, the genesis of Redbreast dates back to 1903 when John Jameson & Son entered into an agreement with the Gilbeys Wines & Spirits Import Company to supply them with new make spirit from their Bow St. Distillery. The custom of that era was that distillers sold bulk whiskey to ‘bonders’ who, being in the business of importing fortified wines such as sherry and port, had ample supplies of empty casks in which to mature new make whiskeys under bond.
Single Pot Still whiskey is unique to Ireland in general and to the Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, in particular, and is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Pot Still whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and a wonderful creamy mouthfeel.
Nose: lively and firm, this one offering a gentle fruity sweetness not too dissimilar to a rye, ironic as there is a light bourbony kick off the oak, too;
Taste: wonderfully clipped and correct in delivery: firm at first – very firm!!! – but slowly the barley melts and light muscovado sugars dovetail with a flinty fruitiness and pillow-soft vanilla; incorrigibly mouthwatering and the build up of spices is just showing off;
Finish: remains spicy but clean, allowing a clear view of thos varying barley tones drifting away;
Balance: Yes…!!! Back to its classically classy, brilliant best. No sulphur casks this time (unlike last year). Just juicy pot still all the way. An old loved one has returned… more gorgeous than eve.
Country: Ireland.
ABV: 40%.
Unit: 70cl.

The Highland Park Tweet Tasting – It Was A Dark & Smoky Night!

November 10, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

An impressive selection of samples and tasting equipment!

An impressive selection of samples and tasting equipment!

Highland Park pulled all the stops out last night with their varied and flavoursome Tweet Tasting, once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire.

The Smoky Old Fashioned Cocktail Kit

The Smoky Old Fashioned Cocktail Kit

Apart from three generous whisky samples and a cocktail kit they also supplied us with a nosing glass and a tumbler. Suffice to say, we all felt very spoilt and looked after!

The drinks sampled were:-

  • Highland Park Dark Origins
  • Highland Park Smoky Old Fashioned Cocktail
  • Highland Park 18 Year Old

Highland Park’s smoky twist on the classic Old Fashioned Cocktail (courtesy of the people from carryoncocktailkit) went down a storm even though some of the tweeters, myself included, failed to get to grips with all the subtleties of the cocktail preparation!

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #HighlandPark on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Highland Park Dark Origins (46.8%)

A new core bottling celebrating the early days of Magnus Eunson’s illicit distilling on Orkney. His antics predated the distillery which wasn’t founded until 1798. Magnus worked as a butcher and church official by day, smuggler by night!

To honour Magnus Highland Park created a whisky with a suitably ‘dark’ character. Using 80% first-fill Sherry casks (20% refill) – 60% are first-fill European oak, with 20% being first-fill American oak.

Nose: Sweet with a slight hint of smoke, little bit of orange. Sherryness comes thru after a while mixed with saltiness then later on rich fruit which is a joy!

Palate: Sweeter than I expected with a pronounced blackcurrantness! Smoke n’ sweet and spicy – quite the mouthful! A lot more of the smokiness with the sherry I got with the nose taking a bit of a backseat – not complaining tho!

Finish: Spicy, sweet chocolate giving way to a little dry pepperyness.

Overall: A uniquely tasty blend of dark and light from HP. Light sherry & blackcurrant, dark smoke & spice – I think Magnus would have been pleased – but not about the tax we have to pay on it!

Tasting Notes – Highland Park Smoky Old Fashioned Cocktail

This cocktail consisted of a generous measure of Highland Park Dark Origins, sugar, aromatic bitters and twists of orange and lemon, all poured over ice.

I managed to get there in the end but I did make the mistake of adding the alcohol to the sugar first when I should have added the bitters to the sugar first. Sugar doesn’t dissolve easily in alcohol!

Still, anticipation makes the taste buds grow fonder as they say!

Overall: A lovely, orangey, Xmassy cocktail! A tasty blend of sweet n’ bitter with sweet oranges and clove flavours pushing thru that Dark Origins smokey haze!

Tasting Notes – Highland Park 18 Year Old (43%)

A classic dram featuring in most peoples lists of classic drams, Highland Park 18 was named Best Spirit in the World in F. Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal in 2005 & 2009. It was also the winner of a Gold Medal at the 2005 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and earned a Liquid Gold Award from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2014.

Nose: Briney, sugary sweet with a hint of tropical fruit. There’s honey syrup, caramel and apples.

Palate: Very smooth with flavours of mango and passion fruit – glorious! I get very little smoke though – it’s all tropical sunshine & palm trees!

Finish: Quite dry at the end with some peat (there you are!) but the sweetness keeps right on truckin’!

Overall: A dram for your bucket list and it doesn’t dissappoint!

My Favourite On The Night

Well it has to be the Highland Park 18 Year Old – class in a bottle! Dark Origins wasn’t that far behind and if you get the chance – try the cocktail – it’s the business as a Christmas drink!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and the team at Highland Park (@HighlandPark) for sending such an impressive selection of samples and tasting equipment.

All in all, a fantastic, Dark & Smoky night!

Ballantine’s Hard Fired Unveiled!

November 4, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ballantine's Hard Fired!

Ballantine’s Hard Fired!

Ballantine’s has launched Ballantine’s Hard Fired, an innovative expression that introduces a bespoke process in the production of Scotch whisky and provides a unique experience within the Ballantine’s family. Ballantine’s Hard Fired is set to appeal to whisky drinkers seeking authenticity and craftsmanship in new Scotch styles.

Judging the char length and intensity by sight

Judging the char length and intensity by sight

The taste profile of Ballantine’s Hard Fired whisky has been developed through the transformative power of fire. The signature hard firing of the barrels unlocks vanilla notes, hints of smoke and spice and provides a distinctive smoothness, resulting in a characterful and uniquely balanced whisky.

Ballantine’s Hard Fired’s bespoke process starts with the individual selection of American oak barrels by the wood management team. The barrels are then sent to highly skilled craftsmen at the cooperage to char them for a second time – a process known as ‘hard firing’ – while judging the char length and intensity by sight. Finally, Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop noses each barrel and selects those best to be filled with a unique Ballantine’s blend for resting.

Ballantine’s Hard Fired showcases the natural and unique results that American oak and fire produce on Scotch whisky. When charred, casks form a natural layer of caramelised wood sugars that react with whisky and a double char understandably intensifies this effect.

The result is a smooth, creamy and subtly smoky Scotch whisky with tasting notes of sweet honey, soft red apples and tangy liquorice. This balanced flavour profile results in a premium whisky that sits well within the Ballantine’s family style while offering something new.
– Sandy Hyslop: Ballantine’s Master Blender

Ballantine’s Hard Fired is set to appeal to whisky drinkers seeking authenticity and craftsmanship

Ballantine’s Hard Fired is a natural progression for the brand as we continue to innovate within the Scotch whisky category. The double charring naturally unlocks flavour, creating a whisky that stays true to our philosophy of craftsmanship, authenticity and outstanding flavour.

Ballantine’s Hard Fired is a modern, masculine expression that responds to current trends in the whisky market that demand new experiences while enjoying Scotch whisky.
– Peter Moore: Ballantine’s Global Brand Director

Ballantine’s Hard Fired has a 40% ABV and will be available from November onwards in Poland and France before rolling out globally in March 2016.

Official Ballantine’s Hard Fired tasting notes:

Nose: Sweet ripe fruits of pears and blackcurrants, vanilla, butterscotch toffee and a gentle wisp of bonfire smoke.
Taste: Sweet honey, soft red apples, a hint of tangy liquorice and gentle smoke.
Finish: Long vanilla finish that is both sweet and slightly tangy.

November 3, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

The English Whisky Co is to release Chapter 10 on Thursday 5th November.

A total of 120 cask strength bottles and 500 bottles at 46%abv will be released worldwide.

A total of 120 cask strength bottles and 500 bottles at
46%abv will be released worldwide.

This incredibly rare Single Malt whisky first made an appearance in 2009 but due to the tiny amounts made none has been available since then.

This is only the second ever release of this rich and moorish single malt whisky. A total of 120 cask strength bottles and 500 bottles at 46% abv will be released worldwide.

This wonderfully rich and heavy style of whisky the result of maturation in an Olorrosso Sherry cask.

This bottling of Chapter 10 is a rare occurrence. I have kept an eye on the sleeping casks for a number of years now, waiting for the right moment to release the whisky. This 2nd batch of Chapter 10 is incredibly well balanced and isn’t quite as dry on the pallet as the 1st bottling, which I am sure will be well received by our consumers.
– David Fitt: English Whisky Co head distiller

The English Whisky Co. has had another successful year picking up several awards: It has been awarded 2 Great Taste Gold Awards for it’s Chapter 15 and Nelstrop’s PX. It has also been awarded 15 Liquid Gold awards by Jim Murray as well as being named as producer of European Whisky of the Year 2015.

English Whisky Chapter 10 Tasting notes:

Nose: Quite heavy with raisins and dried fruit. Rich fruit cake, Christmas pudding with wine gums, dates with a hint of marzipan. A delicate waft of aniseed breezes in after a while.

Taste: Again very fruity, rosehip syrup. Citrus fruits. Full bodied and quite chewy with a long, fruity finish. Very dry.

Sampling The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish!

October 30, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish

The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish

I’ve just had a great opportunity to sample three of The Glenlivet Nàdurra Expressions including their latest release: the Peated Whisky Cask Finish.

The malts sampled were:-

  • The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish: Cask Strength
  • The Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection
  • The Glenlivet Nàdurra Olorosso Matured

The Glenlivet has launched a third expression for its celebrated Nàdurra range, as it continues to honour the historic traditions of making single malt whisky through new and innovative cask finishes. The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish is the first release to have a subtle, smoky taste profile, having been finished in American oak casks that have previously held heavily-peated Scotch whisky.

Bottled at 61.5% ABV cask strength

Bottled at 61.5% ABV cask strength

Bottled at 61.5% ABV cask strength, The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish is inspired by the authentic production processes used at The Glenlivet Distillery by its founder, George Smith, who originally used peat smoke to dry the malted barley. Finished in peated casks, the classic, smooth and fruity house style that has made the range so famous has been enriched with gentle, aromatic smoky notes, to offer a brand new The Glenlivet experience to whisky enthusiasts. The expression will also be available in Global Travel Retail at 48% ABV.

Available in nine domestic markets, including USA and France, and Global Travel Retail from October 2015, the release follows the launch of The Glenlivet Nàdurra Oloroso and The Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection in 2014. The Glenlivet craftsmen individually nosed each cask to ensure the perfect balance between fruit and smoke in the whisky, which has been bottled in small batches with no chill-filtration to offer the complexity, full body and distinctively creamy texture of a whisky that has just been drawn from the cask.

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet Nàdurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish: Cask Strength (61.5%)

Nose: Pale straw colour. Thick vanilla with smatterings of pears and apples. Later there comes a peaty undertow, some burnt wood and a little smoke.

Palate: The peat is quite subtle and a ways down. There’s vanilla, caramel and some zesty fruit all wrapped up in a cask strength punch!

Finish: A Spicy finish that’s long with the vanilla sweetness running through it. The peat is pretty subtle and the smokiness comes in right at the end that’s joined by some tobacco.

Overall: If you like your peat .. sweet, then this ones for you! I was warming to this one at the end and as ever, if you’re sampling a few drams always leave the peated ones till the last!

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection (63.1%)

The Glenlivet

The Glenlivet Nadurra First Fill

The Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection is drawn from casks made from American White Oak that have never before been used to mature Scotch whisky.

These casks have always been a popular choice of distillers at The Glenlivet since the early 1900s, imparting hints of creamy vanilla to the malt whisky.

The release follows the initial launch of The Glenlivet Nàdurra Oloroso.

Nose: Pale straw colour. Sweet pears, tropical fruits all covered in a vanilla haze – delightful!

Palate: Autumn apples, juicy pears and pineapple juice. There’s some banana in there as well, almost like banana milk.

Finish: Smooth finish, slightly dry with grapefruit overtones but no spice of any real note. Just fruity sweetness.

Overall: All the signature Glenlivet notes are there all wrapped up in a robust 63% package. A nice dram.

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet Nàdurra Olorosso Matured (60.3%)

This release follows the initial launch of the normal strength The Glenlivet Nàdurra Oloroso earlier in 2014. It is matured solely in ex-sherry casks.

Nose: Gorgeous gold colour. Nose of fruit, hints of cinnamon and toffee caramel.

Palate: Pleasantly thick mouthfeel. Smooth, fruity and sweet with a hint of that 60% power. Lovely, creamy toffee caramel with a slight peppery edge to it.

Finish: Sweet finish that makes way to a long warming spice hit that goes on and on!

Overall: A sweet sherried dram nicely mixing spices and fruit sweetness. A great cask strength addition to The Glenlivet range!

So, which one is my Favourite?

Difficult one this but out of the three I’m going to go for The Glenlivet Nàdurra Olorosso Matured. Sweet, rich, vanilla fruitiness combined with a high alcohol punch. It’s a hard one to beat!

Many thanks to the team at Richmond Towers (@DrinksPRAgency) for sending the samples and of course, The Glenlivet (@TheGlenlivet), without whom!

Ballantine’s Launches First 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition Exclusive to Global Travel Retail!

October 29, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ballantine's 21 Year Old Signature Oak

Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak

Ballantine’s has unveiled Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak, the first of two new limited editions exclusive to Global Travel Retail. The release of an additional Signature Edition created with American oak will follow to complete the special pair of bottlings, making each a collector’s item for whisky enthusiasts.

Bottle and Presentation Box

Bottle and Presentation Box

The Signature Oak Edition – European Oak has been skilfully crafted by Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop and showcases the characteristics and flavours that European oak contributes to the original 21 Year Old blend.

Ensuring this newest expression stays true to the award-winning taste profile of Ballantine’s 21 Year Old, selected whiskies have been matured in quality sherry casks of European oak. Larger than American oak casks, these vessels help to deliver a unique flavour due to their effect on the ageing process.

I nose each and every cask to ensure a balance between the liquid and the wood, something George Ballantine – a pioneer in the art of maturing whisky in quality casks – would have approved of. With the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Editions, I wanted to pay tribute to our founder and release expressions that demonstrate to consumers how cask maturation and oak influence transform our whisky.

Providing a rich taste profile, the European oak has enhanced the notes of raisin, fruitcake, sherry and spice within the 21 Year Old blend so I am certain that it will become a must-have addition to the cabinet of selective whisky collectors.
– Sandy Hyslop: Ballantine’s Master Blender

The Signature Oak Editions will engage consumers with an interesting journey across different types of cask maturation. Supporting the launch of the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak, our Global Travel Retail displays will highlight different elements that consumers can relate to. We will focus on colour, taste and smell to showcase how European oak casks produce a very specific effect on our selected malts, enhancing the quality and personality of our whisky.

Consumers purchasing through Global Travel Retail are looking for innovation and uniqueness beyond what they can buy in domestic markets. I’m confident that Ballantine’s fans and whisky connoisseurs alike will enjoy the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak and look forward to our next launch to complete this special collectors’ set.
– Peter Moore: Global Brand Director for Ballantine’s

Available in Global Travel Retail, the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old Signature Oak Edition – European Oak is bottled at 40% ABV. The release of the Signature Oak Editions builds on the success of the Ballantine’s 17 Year Old Signature Distillery Editions, launched in 2012, which paid tribute to four key signature malts in the 17 Year Old blend and the distilleries that produce them.
