Chivas Masters Starts Search for Top Bartending Talents 2016!

November 30, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Chivas Masters 2016 - Shanghai skyline

Chivas Masters 2016 – Shanghai skyline

Chivas Regal has started the search for the 2016 Global Chivas Master, where competitors this year will be judged not only on their bartending abilities but also on their demonstration of Chivas’ values of brotherhood and generosity. This month sees national heats start around the world, which will for the first time culminate with the grand final in Shanghai in July 2016, celebrating success through teamwork, collaboration and mentorship.

This year's Chivas Master - Josh Reynolds from Hawksmoor Spitalfields

This year’s Chivas Master – Josh Reynolds from Hawksmoor Spitalfields

The national stages will challenge entrants to recreate Chivas Regal’s journey across the globe. Taking inspiration from the classic cocktails of New York to the booming bars of Shanghai, via their local cocktail scene, entrants will be asked to create three drinks that enhance Chivas Regal’s smooth, generous style and epitomise its international appeal in order to reach the grand final.

The most talented competitor from each market will then be invited to spend five immersive days in Shanghai at the Chivas Masters Global Final, where they will undertake a number of key challenges following workshops from the industry’s best. Throughout five days of challenges and inspirational masterclasses, competitors will be judged on their bartending talent and ability to lead, mentor and inspire a team by a distinguished panel of industry experts.

Collaboration will be rewarded this year by granting a winning team at the Global Final a once in a lifetime trip to The Tales of the Cocktail 2016 in New Orleans to learn from some of the industry’s most renowned bartenders. A further prize will be awarded to the 2016 Global Chivas Master, who will earn a bespoke trip to one of the world’s most iconic bars in a city of their choice to create a signature Chivas cocktail as their lasting contribution to the global competition.

Mentorship and collaboration are traits found at the heart of the bartending industry. We want to celebrate this spirit of camaraderie through the Chivas Masters 2016 competition by encouraging entrants to celebrate success with their peers. We will be looking for competitors who are able to demonstrate a true spirit of leadership as well as excellent bartending talent.
– Max Warner: International Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal

Bartenders with the ambition to become the next Chivas Master are encouraged to get in touch with their local market Pernod Ricard representative for details on how to enter.

Old Malt Cask is unashamedly for connoisseurs of the finest expressions of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. As one of the most established brands in the single cask market, Old Malt Cask is trusted by thousands of Malt Whisky consumers all around the world as the selection which bottles some of the most noteworthy Scotches in the market. Each month, the Hunter Laing tasting panel reviews the company stocks and, after careful consideration, selects only the casks which are of the highest quality. Whether the whisky was distilled in Speyside or Islay, the Lowlands or the Islands, they all have one thing in common – they have been bottled at exactly the right time to capture the unique characteristics of the cask.
Invariably bottled at 50% strength to maintain drinkability, each new expression is non-chillfiltered to ensure that the personality of each cask remains. Our expert blender also writes notes to guide the consumer through the tasting experience. We don't have to do much with the whisky – we let it speak for itself.
Old Malt Cask has spent fifteen years as one of the market leaders in the single cask category. As the reputation of Hunter Laing rests on the quality of each release, they aim to ensure that each new bottling delights the consumer as much as the last one.
Nose: beautiful structure and weight; a little toasty, but welcomes the nutty spread. Excellent salt to suger ratio;
Taste: sublime delivery with near perfect weight and poise and some ramped up barley. The oils are delicate, the sugars playful and the quasi-bourbon style liquorice adding just the right degree of tostesterone;
Finish: a late settling of some sugary scores as the light muscovado overpowers the fudgy oak;
Balance: an early morning reminder why I can really love this job.

Age:

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Highlands.

The 17-year-old predominantly features ex-bourbon maturation, with the addition of spirit that has been wholly matured in Spanish wood ex-sherry casks, predominantly Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. This adds a subtle depth and complexity to the whisky, making for an outstanding after-dinner drink.
Nose: Sweet with traces of apples and pears: slightly woody with a hint of butterscotch.
Colour: Red amber with a rich autumnal hue.
Taste: Full bodied, with hints of vanilla and floral notes in the background; a long-lasting memorable finish.
Ratings: 95 Points – Jim Murray's 2016 Whisky Bible.

As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
Nose: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
Colour: Golden amber with straw highlights.
Taste: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

A magnificently confident, smoky and sweet Brora to recall Shakespeare’s timeless description of Cleopatra… ‘age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety’… If a chocolatier made a malt it would surely taste like this, with cocoa-rich shells and centres of caramel, cherry fruit and marzipan offset by a perfectly judged sea-salt piquancy.
Appearance: Deep yellow gold. Exceptional beading.
Nose: Cautious, yet welcoming: smooth, rounded and well balanced. Peaty, with a smoky fresh-lit fire soon giving way to scented candle-wax and dry, fragrant herbs. Soft sultana cake notes become malty, with toasted coconut, honey and lemon zest underscored by subtle wood smoke. With time there’s butterscotch and a little marzipan too, again offset by darker notes of peat. The aromas fuse with water, which raises sweet jam and creamy toffee below top notes of minty, fragrant herbs and perfumed bath salts, and less pronounced smoke.
Body: Medium to rich, soft.
Palate: Powerful at cask strength. Syrup-smooth and sweet to start, then spicy, mouth-drying and faintly charred. Fresh and fragrant flavours of cocoa, dark chocolate truffles, orange zest and toffee honeycomb rise before background hints of wood smoke and ripe, red berries. With water the taste is softer and lighter; less sweet and more mineral, with vanilla and distant mouth-cooling pine resin.
Finish: Medium to long and deeply warming: spicy too, its herbal freshness fused with dark chocolate, appetising toothsome tannins and a minty, fragrant aftertaste. Lengthy and gentle with water. Distinctly minty again, with hints of liquorice and well-roasted coffee in the background.

Aroma: Strawberry jam, honey glazed ham, Cantaloupe melon, freshly squeezed orange juice.
Palate: Sweet with buttery notes; candy floss, Victoria sponge. Red fruits, eucalyptus, mint, coconut. Fading smoke.
Finish: Fresh with lots of depth.

Tomatin are excited to announce an addition to their range – a 36 year old small batch release – which is available to all markets now.
Batch 1 of this new 36 Year Old expression has been vatted from a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks, producing just 800 bottles. Smooth and creamy, it has been bottled at natural cask strength (46%abv), non chill filtered and natural colour. Packaged in an attractive wooden box, each bottle is individually numbered and comes with its own certificate.
Tomatin are in a unique position to be able to offer a product of this age on an ongoing basis. Following the withdrawal of their famed 30 year old expression, we expect this new 36 year old to be a welcome addition for drinkers, of Tomatin single malt.
AROMA: Pear drops, ginger snaps, butterscotch, vanilla ice cream, sherry notes, milk chocolate.
PALATE: Woody and malty, less sweet than the nose, cloves and cardamom.
FINISH: Elegantly smooth and creamy with just a hint of spice.

Nose: wow! Speyside at its most concentrated: the barley is both thick yet, on another level, bordering on juicy and light. Almond oil appears to cling to the nose, as does kumquats and freshly picked peas:
Taste: almost a mirror image of the nose. That barley…there is simply no getting to the bottom of it:
Finish: long, with those oils clinging fast. The oak is spice free but projects mocha afar…:
Balance: one of the best Macallan’s I have encountered for a very long while. The weight of the malt emphasis beautifully the small size of the stills. Intense yet so complex and beautifully balanced.
Ratings: 95.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2016 Whisky Bible.

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Lowlands.
ABV: 53.3%
Distilled: 1974
Bottled: 2015
Unit: 70cl
Quite out of the ordinary, one of the most individual whiskies you could taste and an excellent apéritif; highly complex yet wonderfully open and accessible, with a compelling nose; clean, fresh and fruity with a pleasing, oaky character that is amplified when a little water is added.
Appearance: Warm antique gold, with russet lights.
Nose: Appetising, mouth-watering. Sweet fruit chews and fresh fruits (peach, ripe melon and a spirited top-note of zesty orange peel) over a base of vanilla sponge, with a hint of fresh-planed oak. Or perhaps, simply, fruit crème-filled dark chocolates or vanilla-rich rum-and-raisin ice cream. Later, a medley of sultanas, soft, over-ripe bananas and honey on a cinnamon Danish. Water brings up the vanilla sponge and planed oak, with a mossy note that evokes dessert grapes eaten straight from a paper carton.
Body: Medium.
Palate: Immediate, with fresh acidity: lightly sweet and oily, with smooth chocolate and vanilla, a spicy warmth and a slightly bitter pungency emerging on the mid-palate. At reduced strength the texture becomes softer and the taste cooling and creamy. Burnt sugar and cocoa against a developing background of wooden pencil boxes, joined by raisins, dates, allspice and a trace of white chocolate.
Finish: Long and complex. Oily, with finely coating dry, dark chocolate and fresh oak-wood. A rising pungency offers up espresso coffee and charred notes of treacle toffee and chocolate cake. Warming with water: softer and creamier now, with aromatic sandalwood.

Drinks by the Dram Whisky and Gin Christmas Crackers!

new jokes this year (but don’t expect them to be any better than last year’s jokes)

new jokes this year (but don’t expect them to be any better than last year’s jokes)

New Whisky and Gin Christmas Crackers – Something to dull the pain from the awful jokes!

Following the success of their popular spirit-filled Christmas Crackers, Drinks by the Dram has introduced whisky and gin crackers for Christmas 2015.

Launched in 2014, Drinks by the Dram’s Christmas Crackers swap out the usual prizes of keyrings, whistles and tiny playing cards for a selection of delicious spirits and liqueurs, presented in 3cl wax-sealed ‘drams’. The set features 6 Christmas Crackers, each containing a different dram along with the traditional paper crown. Oh … and crap joke!

For Christmas 2015 they have extended the range of Christmas Crackers to include two sets focussed exclusively on whisky and a set focussed entirely on gin, alongside their classic set filled with an array of top quality spirits and liqueurs.

Drinks by the Dram’s 2015 Christmas Cracker range will be widely available at retailers including Harvey Nichols and online at Amazon and Master of Malt (shipping mid December).

Drinks by the Dram Gin Crackers
RRP £39.95

Drinks by the Dram Spirits & Liqueurs Crackers
RRP £37.95

Drinks by the Dram Premium Whisky Crackers
RRP £99.95

Whisky lovers can sit down to Christmas lunch with the Whisky Christmas Crackers (RRP £59.95), containing expressions from the likes of Glenfarclas, Kilchoman and The Lost Distilleries Blend.

Full-blown whisky aficionados can treat the table to the Premium Whisky Christmas Crackers (RRP £99.95), featuring altogether more exclusive drams like a 23 year old Bowmore, a 21 year old Balvenie and even a 50 year old single grain whisky.

Gin enthusiasts can also crack open some fantastic tipples with the Gin Christmas Crackers (RRP £39.95), containing drams of spectacular juniper-based-libations like award-winning Professor Cornelius Ampleforth Bathtub Gin, St. George Terroir and 1897 Quinine Gin.

And of course, there will be new jokes this year (but don’t expect them to be any better than last year’s jokes).

Drinks by the Dram’s 2015 Christmas Cracker range will be widely available at retailers including Harvey Nichols and online at Amazon and Master of Malt (shipping mid December).

Sampling Flaviar’s Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old!

November 27, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Flaviar Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Japanese Whisky

Flaviar Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Japanese Whisky

Flaviar – Amazing Spirits – Just A Tasting Pack Away!

I previously tasted Flaviars’s Writer’s Tears Irish Whisky in my last blog and I’m now getting the chance to sample their Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Japanese Whisky.

The five malts to sample are:-

  • Flaviar Writer’s Tears Irish Whisky
  • Flaviar Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky
  • Flaviar Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban Scotch Whisky
  • Flaviar Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Japanese Whisky
  • Flaviar Santis Swiss Peated Whisky

I’m not actually sampling them in the order shown above, it’s more of an un-scientific ‘whatever I fancy’ kind of selection process.

Flaviar recently sent me some of their whisky samples to demonstrate their subscription service.

Flaviar was founded back in 2012 by three friends who were all spirits enthusiasts. They used to meet up for spirits tastings, which gradually led to the idea of spirits tasting packs that would enable everyone to do the same.

Flaviar now creates Tasting Packs and each month, their experts select 3 awesome spirits, selected from all over the globe, which are then sent out to Prime Members in 45 ml bottles.

The Price for the first month is an introductory £14.99, then £18.99 per month thereafter.

Membership is completely flexible and members can decide to skip a month if they wish.

Flaviar also offers a selection of full-size bottles to enable everyone to discover the world of spirits and learn how to build the best home bar.

Gifts you won't lose 'Face' over!

Gifts you won’t lose ‘Face’ over!

If you’re looking for Gifts, Flaviar also has a 2 months subscription gift for under £40, where the buyer can choose the first month’s pack and also add a personal message. The fantastic packaging alone makes it an ideal present!

Your very own whisky companion

Your very own whisky companion

To accompany this Flaviar has a Free app providing a wealth of information on drinks. One section of the App is The Flavour Spiral which is Flaviar’s innovative way to visualize flavours that can be found in a drink.

Here are my tasting notes on the second dram …

Tasting Notes – Flaviar Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Japanese Whisky (45%)

Yoichi distillery has been producing whisky since 1934. It has it’s own cooperage and their hogshead barrels are made on-site using new oak.

Nose: Fudge and vanilla, sweet caramel. Fresh green apples and new wood.

Palate: Quite oily, hint of peat and smoke that’s soon washed away by lush sweetness. Fruit cake mixture.

Finish: Spicy, peppery and sweet finish. There’s also grapefruit with a touch of dry tobacco. The pepper is quite long and builds into a nice warming tummy glow!

Overall: A crisp whisky with a heart warming Fieriness to it that’s rather morish!

The Flavour Spiral Apps Verdict:-

I’ll be reviewing the other three whiskies from the tasting set in future blogs 🙂

Many thanks to Flaviar for sending the samples!

Tasting Notes reinvented!

To accompany this Flaviar has a Free app providing a wealth of information on drinks. One section of the App is The Flavour Spiral which is Flaviar’s innovative way to visualize flavours that can be found in a drink.

After having worked for almost three years on finding the perfect way to visualise a drink’s flavours, their dynamics and gathering data, we are convinced that the Flavour Spiral is what drinkers of fine spirits have been missing.
– Grisa Soba: Flaviar co-founder

Here are my tasting notes on the first dram …

Tasting Notes – Flaviar Writer’s Tears Irish Whisky (40%)

Writer’s Tears is an Irish whiskey produced by Walsh Whiskey Distillery Co. It is made using a mix of single pot still and single malt whiskies.

It won a Silver in the Irish Single Malts/Pot Stills category of the 2014 International Spirits Challenge and was the Winner of the Irish Blended Whiskey of the Year in the 2013 Irish Whiskey Awards.

Nose: Honeyed golden colour. Sweet caramel and vanilla nose laced with tropical fruits.

Palate: Light mouthfeel. Tropical fruits coupled with smooth, honey sweetness.

Finish: Warming finish, quite long and satisfying with a nice mix of spice and sweetness. The fiery spice and pepper grows quite substantially as the number of sips grow! Slight hint of grapefruit at the end.

Overall: A very pleasant, sippable whiskey and perfect fireside fare. I’d love to taste the cask strength version of this dram as I suspect the added Oomph! would catapult this whiskey into the ‘can’t stop sipping it league’!.

The Flavour Spiral Apps Verdict:-

I’ll be reviewing the other whiskies in future blogs 🙂

Many thanks to Flaviar for sending the samples!

Master of Malt Launches “Build Your Own” Spirit-filled Advent Calendar Service!

"I'll have what they're having ..."

“I’ll have what they’re having …”

For the first time ever, Master of Malt is letting customers pick the contents of their own spirit-filled Advent Calendar from an extensive dram selection of over 4,000 whiskies, gins, rums and many other spirits!

Master of Malt extends its integration of Drinks by the Dram’s spirit samples by, for the first time ever, offering customers the opportunity to build their own spirit-filled Advent Calendars. This service is available in addition to the core range of pre-filled Advent Calendars which, new for this year, has been extended to include spirits categories including whisky, rum, gin, Cognac, naga chilli, absinthe, mezcal and more.

Customers are able to start with an empty calendar, and browse the site’s 4,000-strong selection of drams to fill it with their favourite gins, rums, whiskies and many other spirits. As they fill the calendar, a handy sidebar helps the customer to keep track of contents and cost, ensuring that they are able to build their perfect personal countdown to Christmas.

Master of Malt Issues Interest-Bearing Gift Vouchers – Just In Time For Christmas!

November 18, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

£500 of pure joy - on paper!

£500 of pure joy – on paper!

Master of Malt has destroyed the traditional concept of retail gift vouchers and just in time for Christmas – making for the gift (voucher) that literally keeps on giving!

Instead of these vouchers becoming “worthless anywhere between 6 months and a couple of years later or whenever you lose it (whichever comes sooner)” – these vouchers never expire, and actually increase in value over time, paying their “own particular brand of delicious interest at 5% (compounded) per year”.

We hope other retailers follow suit and put an end to the nonsense that is ‘traditional’ gift vouchers. In the meantime, we invite you to try ours – we think you’ll like them.
– Master of Malt: Cool dudes

In addition to that, Master of Malt have applied these same benefits to vouchers that have already been issued …

All the vouchers that are already ‘out there’ started accruing interest as of the 1st of June 2015, and all expiry dates on them will be ignored. From now on, they’re subject to the same terms and conditions as the new vouchers. Enjoy! – #GoodEnoughIsnt
– Master of Malt: The Coolest of dudes

Check the value of your voucher at any point in time!

Check the value of your voucher at any point in time!

Master of Malt have built a tool into their gift voucher page which allows the holder of a gift voucher to check the value of their voucher at any point in time, so recipients will be able to see how much their gift has grown in value since they received it.
