THE SPIRIT OF OCTOMORE HAS BEEN DEFYING LOGIC FOR OVER FIFTEEN YEARS. THE “WHAT IF” MOMENT THAT ONCE SEEMED ALMOST ABSURD HAS PROGRESSIVELY MORPHED INTO SOMETHING ENDLESSLY ALLURING. NOW, SUDDENLY, THERE ARE EIGHT.
Led by the structural brilliance of 08.1, we can pause at this symbolic moment to enjoy a single malt masterclass. The experimental ethos, the muscular quality, is still very much to the fore, but there is enlightenment now, a sure-footed confidence. 08.1 is the necessary benchmark, the launch pad from which others can only follow. 08.1 reveals the astonishing subtlety of our phenolic universe, leading us along a pathway into a world like no other.
CHARACTER: Refined, confident, a little extra age has tempered some of the vitality but this dram has gained a classic, timeless feel.
COLOUR: Winter sun, crisp and bright.
NOSE: Initially smoke, tar, peat ash hint of muddiness/wet peat moss. Candied orange, pepper, chocolate, macaroon, vanilla fudge and lemon meringue pie.
PALATE: Liquid gold, soft and delicate texture from slow distillation. Superb fruit/smoke combination. On the lips there is soft kiss of salt spray, ozone fresh. Sweet oak gives vanilla, fudge, marzipan and walnut. Melon and citrus come through on a floral breeze. Many layered there is a lot find in this Octomore.
FINISH: Wow! Smoothness, sweetness and then smoke. A texture like no other, satin soft and devilishly warming. The American oak influence is in perfect tune with the smoke and soft fruits delicately, skilfully coaxed from the still during exceptionally slow distillation. Vanilla, honey, citrus rise up to be met with sea spray and leather, smoked mussels mix with autumn bracken and creíÛme brûlée.

INITIATION AND PROVOCATION IS FOLLOWED BY CHALLENGE. GROWING BARLEY ON ISLAY IS ALWAYS DIFFICULT AND YIELDS ARE LOW.
The autumn of 2010 was wet and windy. A late harvest saw Octomore farmer James Brown facing heavy losses from greylag geese and herds of wild red deer, resulting in a precious little yield. Malting the this Octomore grain produced results that were unprecedented, the readings came back at 309.1ppm. The nature and variety of Octomore depends on far more than simply number, but these were staggering.
Following a carefully controlled trickle distillation, this uber-provenance spirit was matured in 56% first fill Bourbon casks, the remaining in ex-Paulliac, Ventoux, Rhone and Burgundy casks.
CHARACTER: This is the ultimate Islay Octomore. A thunderstorm of a dram. Close your eyes as you take the first sip and allow your senses to shut down as you focus on processing this fascinating dram.
COLOUR: Golden syrup.
NOSE: Toasted oak and muddy/peaty smoke, bandages. Maple syrup, fresh linen, sea shells. Evokes a memory of lying in the heather on the peat moss, the warm sun coaxing the scent from the wild fowers. The fruit is cherry, peach and mango, with creíÛme brulee and to the from the oak and barley.
PALATE: Initially a surprise as the stellar level of peat is bitter and over-whelming. Another sip opens with up with cherry and peach and toasted sweet oak, dark chocolate, boot polish and seaweed. At this level the peat is like a thunder cloud, darkening the atmosphere. You can feel it in your bones.
FINISH: Complex, creíÛme brulee with caramelised brown sugar slightly overdone. Dark plum, orange and kiwi sit well with the malted barley sweetness. The peat smoke is a tremendous presence o ering roasted coffee, burnt heather and a place in your memory forever.

Buffalo Trace / Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
£23.95

New Arrivals

Buffalo Trace / Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Buffalo Trace / Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

£23.95
Country: American
Region: American
Age:
Strength: 40.%
70cl

Summary: Country/Region: USA/Kentucky. Unit: 70cl. ABV: 40%. Ancient buffalo carved paths through the wilderness that led America's first pioneers and explorers westward. One such trail led to the banks of the Kentucky River where Buffalo Trace Distillery has been making bourbon whiskey the same way for more than 200 years. In tribute to the mighty buffalo and the rugged, independent spirit of the pioneers who followed them westward, we created our signature Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Tasting Notes: This deep amber whiskey has a complex aroma of vanilla, mint and molasses. Pleasantly sweet to the taste with notes of brown sugar and spice that give way to oak,  toffee, dark fruit and anise. This whiskey finishes long and smooth with serious depth. Ratings: Double Gold Medal / 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Colonel EH Taylor / Single Barrel Bourbon
Colonel EH Taylor / Single Barrel Bourbon

£105.00
Country: American
Region: American
Age:
Strength: 50.%
75cl

Summary: Country/Region: USA/Kentucky. ABV: 50%. Unit: 75cl. Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is widely considered one of the founding fathers of the bourbon industry, fighting for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, nearly three decades after he purchased what is now called Buffalo Trace Distillery. During his time, Taylor implemented several innovative methods still used today, including climate controlled aging warehouses. E.H. Taylor Single Barrel is aged exclusively in Warehouse C, which was built by Taylor in 1881 and proven to be an excellent aging warehouse. Each barrel is hand-picked and Bottled in Bond at 100 proof to honour its namesake. Tasting Notes: The aroma carries lightly toasted oak, with dried figs and butterscotch. One sip brings flavours of sweetness balanced with tobacco and dark spices. The finish is just long enough to prepare the palette for another sip. The bottle itself is a likeness to Colonel Taylor's original design used over a century ago. Ratings: Double Gold Medal / 2015 Sanfrancisco World Spirits Competition.

Redbreast / 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey
Redbreast / 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey

£40.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 40.%
70cl

Summary: Country: Ireland. ABV: 40%. Unit: 70cl. One of the most decorated Irish whiskeys, Redbreast is the largest selling Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey in the world. Regarded as the definitive expression of traditional Single Pot Still whiskey, the genesis of Redbreast dates back to 1903 when John Jameson & Son entered into an agreement with the Gilbeys Wines & Spirits Import Company to supply them with new make spirit from their Bow St. Distillery. The custom of that era was that distillers sold bulk whiskey to ‘bonders’ who, being in the business of importing fortified wines such as sherry and port, had ample supplies of empty casks in which to mature new make whiskeys under bond. Single Pot Still whiskey is unique to Ireland in general and to the Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, in particular, and is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Pot Still whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and a wonderful creamy mouthfeel. Nose: A complex spicy and fruity aroma with toasted wood; Taste: Full flavoured and complex; a harmonious balance of spicy, creamy, fruity, sherry and toasted notes; Finish: Satisfyingly long, the complex flavours linger on the palate; Press: "Redbreast is the secret restaurant tucked away in the back of the strip mall that only a handful of people know about. The atmosphere is great and the food divine, but no one is sure that they should tell other people about it because either it'll become too crowded (and thus will be impossible to get a table) or the increased production by the staff in the back will affect the overall quality of the place". – Kate Hopkins, 99 Drams Of Whiskey. Ratings: Double Gold Medal / 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Yellow Spot / 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey
Yellow Spot / 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey

£58.85
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: Country: Ireland. ABV: 46%. Unit: 70cl. Yellow Spot whiskey was last seen in Ireland in the mid to late 1960s. Created and sold by Mitchell & Son Wine and Spirit Merchants, Yellow Spot was always a 12 year old whiskey which was slightly sweet due to the inclusion of some single pot still spirit which was matured in Spanish Malaga wine casks. Inspired by the original, Yellow Spot is the rare taste of a bonder’s style Pot Still Irish whiskey. Maturation in Bourbon barrels, Sherry butts and Malaga casks creates a superbly complex whiskey with fresh and sweet top notes. Nose: Mown hay & cracked black pepper. Red bell peppers, nutmeg, clove oil & green tea. Sweet honey & peaches from the Malaga casks; Taste: honey sweetness with pot still spices. Flavours of fresh coffee, creamy milk chocolate & Crème Brûlée. Notes of red apples & toasted oak; Finish: Sophisticated & complex. Sweetness throughout, with a mix of red grape & dry barley upon exit; Ratings: Double Gold Medal / 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Redbreast / 21 Year Old Single Pot Still Whiskey

£155.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: Country: Ireland. ABV: 46%. Unit: 70cl Redbreast 21 year old is the finest representation of the signature Redbreast sherry style. It is the oldest and richest expression of the Redbreast style ever produced; and the 21 year ageing process introduces new levels of depth, flavour and taste to create an inherently complex and ultimately, rewarding whiskey. Nose: remarkable aroma spanning fresh tropical fruits, nuts and rich dried fruit; Taste: soft vanilla, toasted oak, sherry nuttiness with a dusting of Pot Still spices. Luscious fleshy fruit notes complete the creamy mouthfeel; Finish: lingers, seemingly forever, to oak and Pot Still spices and then, the final bow from barley – where it all began; Press: "If the ship was going down within sight of a desert island my flailing left hand would make a grab for a bottle of Redbreast". – Dave Broom, August 2011, Edinburgh. Ratings: Double Gold Medal / 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Green Spot Château Léoville Barton Edition

£50.00
Country: Scotland
Region:
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: Country: Ireland. ABV: 46%. Unit: 70cl. Green Spot Château Léoville Barton is the latest edition to the Spot whiskey family. This whiskey represents the coming together of two historic families, two stories of Irish endeavour and enterprise who together are the inspiration for this special edition whiskey. Initially matured in a traditional mix of ex-Oloroso sherry, new Bourbon and ex-Bourbon barrels the whiskeys were then transferred into the ex-Bordeaux wine casks for between 12 and 24 months. This imparted distinctive, floral flavours of varying intensity, resulting in a perfectly balanced whiskey. Celebrating an Irish heritage, the collaboration between Green Spot and Château Léoville Barton is not just the coming together of two unique stories, it is the fusion of two unique histories that as one deliver an exceptional whiskey. Nose: It is the contribution of the French oak which drives the initial aroma adding some crisp woodland notes to the spicy Single Pot Still character. The wine seasoning brings a delicate touch of floral perfume and a hint of ripe berries such as raspberries and strawberries, these are in addition to the orchard fruits typical of Green Spot. Taste: The familiar mouth coating effect is a very satisfying balance of oak and spices. Some vanilla sweetness works in harmony with the dry wine influence, while the fresh orchard fruits and French oak combine effortlessly with barley grains to complete the complexity. Finish: The rich French oak character is slow to fade leaving the wine and spices of France and Ireland with the last word. Awards: World's 2016 Best Single Pot Whiskey.

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Highland. ABV: 54.8%. Unit: 70cl. Bottler: Distillery Bottling. Series: Rare Malts Selection. Age: 26 Year Old. Distilled: 1975. Description: Amber in colour. Light but firm bodied. Scented, sweet start, rich mouth-feel, drying to bitterness. Unusual and attractive. Tastes its age, but is by no means over the hill. Nose: Very aromatic, if somewhat closed at first. Soap, linen, traces of wax polish – a pot pourri of faded scents. With water the impression is more 'colourful'. Acid drops, new cards, a trace of black coffee behind. Palate: Lightly buttery and briefly even syrupy, then malty, smooth and dry. Sweet to start, then drying with a slight bitterness – like drinking cold, sweet espresso coffee. Quite a big whisky, with a pleasant, rich mouth-feel. Finish: Medium to long and quite explosive. There's a surprising, woody bitterness too, with notes of cheese straws and oiled leather. This whisky is being sold for a private client, the price shown is the price to be paid, no tax can be reclaimed.

70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Highlands. Unit: 70cl ABV: 46.8% Age: 26 Year Old. GLENTURRET DISTILLERY was licensed in 1775 but had been distilling illicitly since 1717 and can therefore claim to be THE OLDEST DISTILLERY IN SCOTLAND. In keeping with this long history the distillery retains some unique traditions, mashing grist by hand and slowly fermenting the wort in wooden washbacks, for twice as long as other distilleries, to produce an extraordinarily smooth and fruity spirit. The middle cut of the spirit is selected by hand not by computer as it is in other distilleries. Having worked closely with the Edrington Group, Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd is pleased to offer this exclusive limited-release of Glenturret 26 years old single Highland Malt whisky. Bottled at natural cask-strength and without chill-filtration or artificial colouring, this small-batch release is a wonderful example of this small, artisanal distillery’s production. Matured in refill-bourbon casks specially selected from the distillery’s own stocks by its Master Blender, the whisky has a velvety palate with toffee notes and a vanilla sweetness combined with the unmistakeable fruitiness of ripe pineapples. Limited to 2400 bottles worldwide and presented in a wooden gift box with accompanying certificate, this officially-licenced bottling of Glenturret 26 years old is available exclusively to partners of Hunter Laing & Co Ltd. Colour: Golden to dark straw in colour, its tint speaks clearly of its long maturation in North American oak; Nose: The whisky is wonderfully complex on the nose with sweet, fruity notes such as toffee apples combining with strong confectionery elements including milk chocolate & caramel along with toffee popcorn & fragrant woody notes including sandalwood & furniture polish. With the addition of some water it then becomes a little briny & musty; Taste: On the palate, this Glenturret remains sweet with sherbet, some gentle spice and toffee notes. The caramel and golden syrup notes carry across from the nose to the palate and combine with an appealing vanilla sweetness; Finish: The finish is medium to long, with caramel and ginger spice lingering on the palate.

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside. Unit: 70cl ABV: 43% The Macallan REFLEXION represents the natural colour and beauty of The Macallan – a true reflection of the foremost influence of first fill sherry seasoned oak casks. This exceptional single malt has drawn its colour and flavour from maturation in smaller hogshead casks allowing a greater surface area of wood to interact with the whisky to deliver an intricate character driven by the influence of both Spanish and American oak casks. A deep red mahogany hue, taken directly from the cask, is beautifully enhanced by the angular facets of the carefully crafted decanter. The depth of colour coupled with the complex flavour of REFLEXION, derive from the casks selected for this distinctive expression by The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, Bob Dalgarno. Bold and full-bodied, REFLEXION is a celebration of floral and vanilla notes, punctuated with fresh apples and apricots. Nose: Orange and citrus fruits open up like fresh fruit on a sunny market day. Their zest is fresh, the fruit is firm. A slight waxy note fades to fresh green apples. Then the sweet stall: chocolate, thick fudge, boiled sweets, aniseed; caramel toffees almost overwhelm whilst white chocolate truffles are hidden. Just as you are ready to taste, a delivery of bananas in fresh, sweet oak arrives. Palate: Initial light citrus zest with new oak quickly gives way to a juicier sweetness, thick and succulent, of lemon and orange. Raisin, sultana and apple, with a hint of cinnamon and ginger, are subtle. Finish: Boiled sweets add balance to a glimpse of toasted oak to give a medium and soft finish. 70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Wales. Unit: 70cl. ABV: 59%. Penderyn have announced the release of their popular Port Wood finish whisky in a single cask edition.   Only 231 bottles of the Port Wood-matured Single Cask will be produced, and because the bottles contain whisky from specially selected cask No. PT72, their unique characteristics will remain distinctive and unmatched. The whisky is bottled at a cask strength of 59% and is presented in a handmade American Oak box.  Each bottle is hand labelled, numbered and individually signed by our director, Sian Whitelock.  The bottle and box are finished in a cream stencilling. Tasting Notes: The rich ruby red colour of this Penderyn port cask matured whisky does not disappoint! The initial nose is one of rich port and fresh red berry fruits. Soon spiciness and fresh oak chime in. The overall effect is both complex and intensely fruity. In the mouth this whisky is both very sweet and mouth drying at the same time while revealing a rich ruby port flavour. Smooth and easy to drink yet we recommend sipping it gently to enjoy its complexity and port flavour. Few port wood matured whiskies are as intense as this one. It leaves a long lingering finish rich in fruit, vanilla and milk chocolate. Savour the moment! Ratings: 96.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2016 Whisky Bible.

The Gauldrons, which represents the sixth region in the Regional Malt range, takes its name from the “dark sandy coves” in Campbeltown.
According to legend, it was in this spot that Robert the Bruce, who was King of Scotland from 1306-1329, saw a spider attempt to build a web over and over again and was inspired to continue fighting. The story is represented on the packaging, which features an intricate spider’s web.
In keeping with Douglas Laing tradition, the ‘vatted’ malt is produced in small batches and without colouring or chill filtration.
According to the company, each batch will be numbered so future bottlings can be compared to earlier ones to see how they develop in the casks over time.
“The Gauldrons has seen us carefully marry together some of our best, and indeed rarest, casks of Campbeltown single malt,” said Fred Laing, managing director of Douglas Laing.
“The resulting spirit is a unique combination of salt and sweet – the archetypal maritime tang balanced perfectly by a sugary, cereal character.”
TASTING NOTES: On the nose detect a dry saltiness with sweet cereal and a late hint of gentle peat smoke. The palate is initially dry (beachy and maritime) warming to crunched sugar, barley and oak. The warmingly spiced finish brings puffs of smoke and rock pools with a dark sugar sweetness.

Redbreast 21 Year Old Is Best Irish Whiskey!

October 17, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

REDBREAST REMAINS THE WORLD’S ‘BEST IRISH WHISKEY’ FOR JIM MURRAY

Redbreast 21 Year Old has been recognised as the ‘Second Finest Whiskey in the World’ by leading whiskey writer, Jim Murray in his annual Jim Murray Whisky Bible – the highest accolade ever awarded by Murray to an Irish whiskey.

Redbreast 21 Year Old

Scoring a near-perfect 97 out of 100 points, the pinnacle of the Redbreast range was also awarded ‘Best Irish Whiskey of the Year’ and ‘Best Irish Pot Still Whiskey of the Year’ for the second year running and the third time in four years since its launch in 2013.

The announcement closes another highly successful awards season for Redbreast 21 Year Old, having won five top gongs around the world, including gold medals at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, International Spirits Challenge and The Irish Whiskey Masters, in addition to scores of 95 and 97 out of 100 at the Beverage Testing Institute and Ultimate Spirits Challenge respectively.

This nod from Jim Murray is truly heartwarming for me and everyone at Midleton Distillery who has helped to make Redbreast such an enjoyed whiskey. We are humbled by this and it’s really encouraging to see traditional Irish pot still whiskey take one of the top spots in the world of whiskeys and whiskies.

When we were preparing for the launch of Redbreast 21 in 2013 and we were doing our tastings, we knew we had something special on our hands so it is great to see this appreciation shared by people across the world. This award is a testament to the team at Midleton and especially to my predecessors who had the foresight to squirrel away those casks that helped us to bring Redbreast 21 to the world.
– Billy Leighton: Redbreast Head Blender

Now in its 15th edition, Jim Murray has tasted more than 4,500 different whiskeys in order to compile Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2018, evaluating each entrant out of 25 for its nose, taste, finish and balance in order to curate a score out of 100.

STATED AGE: 23 years old.
CASK TYPE: Ex-Bodega European Oak Butts.
NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 5514
STRENGTH: 58.4 % Vol.
SIZE: 700 ml.
A natural cask strength Single Malt from the seldom seen Blair Athol distillery at Pitlochry. A first release of Blair Athol in this series from ex-bodega European Oak butts filled in 1993. A superlative example of Blair Athol, which retains all of its distinctive rich, nutty-spicy character.
APPEARANCE: Rose-hip syrup, with bronze and magenta lights. Rich beading and texture.
NOSE: At first vinous, and drying. Soon, peanut brittle and honey leap out; intensely sweet with a savoury backbone. Hints of toffee and caramel continue, with bruÌ‚lée topping and baked bananas. Next a complex layer of herb and spice; tarragon and mint with warming spice. Opens out into sweet buttermint, accompanied by more nuts as well as savoury leaves and forest floor notes. A little water dries, and introduces a trace of chocolate malt.
BODY: Medium-full bodied, with an oily and rich texture.
PALATE: Rich, smooth, sweet and warming; fruity too. Much more savoury than the nose, with barrel char, spicy oak and liquorice. Aniseed ball heat and treacle toffee sweetness bring on lighter and sweeter notes of candied lemon zest and spiced cooking apple, before diving back into leafy herbs and warming spice. Water smoothly lifts the sweetness, with bitter-sweet fruit and oak, and sweet pepper.
FINISH: Sweetly fragrant and spicy, as the sweetness of mint creams and caster sugar fades to leave a herb garden after rain and soft, oaky spice. Fresh mint, with hints of forest floor and charred oak.

NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 3000
STRENGTH: 51.9 % Vol.
SIZE: 700 ml.
A natural cask strength single malt from a closed distillery at Brora on the Sutherland coast. Sixteenth of a limited series of annual releases. This irreplaceable malt is from American Oak hogshead filled in 1982. It's everything you’d want and hope to find in this legendary malt, finely integrated and smoothed out.
APPEARANCE: Deep gold, with good beading and slow legs.
NOSE: At first maritime and mineral, with dried seaweed. Then waxed apples, damp straw, hints of honeysuckle and underlying touches of oily rags suggest a cider farm’s workshop in springtime. Spicier and slightly dusty tones of earth and browning leaves develop in the weightier, savoury centre, which shows fresh-peeled bark, turmeric and mace. There’s barley sugar and a hint of orange juice or tinned pineapple too, with travel sweets and green leaves, all on a faintly waxy base. The latter emerges more with water, as does the floral, herbal fragrance.
BODY: Medium.
PALATE: The taste starts sweet, with only a little of the waxy texture for which Brora is renowned, so at first it’s sharper than you expect, with fruit, chili and fresh-ground black pepper. As the heat subsides, fruity dark chocolate and soft barrel-char smoke appear, with damp oak, apples and aniseed. The heat slowly builds, as does the fruit. Water brings up the waxy texture, with spicy and mouth-cooling Szechuan pepper masked by chocolate, sweet grass and fruit sweets.
FINISH: Some spice in the finish, as earthy chocolate, barley sugar and aniseed slowly fade to leave sweet-spicy oak, tart apple and chocolate-covered delight, with a final quick burst of black pepper and sweet fruit.

STRENGTH: 59.8 % Vol.
SIZE: 700 ml.
A natural cask strength Single Malt from Caol Ila, an active Isle of Islay distillery. From refill American Oak hogshead, it's delightfully rich, with a fruitiness usually just hinted at in Caol Ila. A fine dram that’s even better with a drop of water.
APPEARANCE: Pale yellow gold. Moderate beading.
NOSE: Surprisingly weighty, with a meaty backbone that doesn't rely on the distillery's usual smoke for depth. Initially sharp and prickly, the first impression is of lemon zest, edging towards lemon drizzle cake and lemon sherbet sweets, or perhaps honeysuckle, vanilla cream and egg custard, along with toffee, green-leaf herbs, fruit gums and soft spiciness. Later, a dry minerality builds in the glass, adding a chalk and flint austerity. The addition of water softens the nose and adds fleeting scents of pine-sap and artist’s studio, against a maritime background.
BODY: Weighty, with fast running legs.
PALATE: The taste is sweet (boiled sweets), acidic (bitter lemon) and salty, walking a knife edge between all three. Occasionally it slips into sour orchard and sweet candied fruit, then into intense salted caramel and toffee. Hints of sea-spray dance the edges, along with barrel-char smokiness, oak, black-pepper spiciness and fresh clean notes. Finally, the fruit and char unite in triumph, as fresh-baked apple pies. Water amplifies both fruit and spice, with liquorice and orange zest, the spice gaining heat and a hint of chilli. With water, these primary tastes soften yet remain clear, becoming more rounded and accessible.
FINISH: Warming, soft and long, with notes of vanilla and spiced pastry, succeeded by aniseed, polished oak, bittersweet liquorice and a last burst of red berries, which fades to soft spice, sweetness and oak.

This is a natural cask strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky with great depth of taste from the essential Islay distillery, Lagavulin, on the island's rocky south coast. Beautifully diverse in nature yet direct in appeal, it’s both complex and rewarding and simply a delight to drink. With minerality bursting into fruit and layers of smoke, it perfectly expresses the distillery character.
APPEARANCE: Very pale silvery gold, with moderate beading.
NOSE: Simple, natural and mild; clean and fresh, with intense sweetness at the front, prickly smoke at the back and savoury, green and earthy notes at its core. Sweet sponge or liquorice, old-fashioned cleansing soap and wet wool are to the fore, then rock pools and sandy beaches, burning pine needles and ferns. The smoke builds, adding richer notes of smoked bacon and more austere mineral notes of cooled beach bonfires. In time the sweetness is lighter, with fruitier tones of apple, sweet pear and barbecued banana. A drop of water introduces a peppery note to the nose-feel and a thread of smoke to the aroma.
BODY: Light and smoothly oily.
PALATE: Easily approached at natural strength; rich and sweet, with a first burst of liquorice quickly supplanted by greener notes. The sweetness grows in the mid-palate, as golden syrup suffused with the savoury smoke of burning leaves, and smoked meat. That smoke becomes sweeter and spicier with black pepper and cinnamon, nutmeg and golden sugar. Finally, the greenness returns as gently drying grass. Water (it can take a good splash) emphasizes lightness, sweetness and smoke; the smoke now more mineral, the syrup and fruit simpler, fresher.
FINISH: Sweet and of medium length, with a lingering smoky aftertaste.

BODY: Light to medium. Smooth textured.
PALATE: Smooth, sweet and fruity, with a trace of crisp acidity and oak spice to balance the sweetness. The freshly baked apple pie on the nose persists with a now caramelised and bitter-sweet flavour.

October 6, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

A New Era for Luxury Irish Whiskey!

The Midleton Very Rare Cask Circle Club invites whisk(e)y enthusiasts and collectors to obtain their own cask of Midleton Very Rare Irish whiskey from a variety of exceptional casks hand selected by Master Distiller, Brian Nation for their quality and rarity. Selecting a cask of Midleton Very Rare whiskey is a truly unique experience. Once members have chosen a cask that suits their personal taste, they can bottle it immediately or instead request bottles of their unique whiskey as and when required.

Midleton Very Rare Vintage Selection 2017

The programme boasts an array of different whiskey styles and ages – from 12 to 30 years old – that have been matured in a range of cask types including Bourbon, Sherry, Malaga, Port, Irish Oak and Rum. Thirty casks have been made available at launch, with prices available on request.

By becoming a member of the Midleton Very Rare Cask Circle, guests will have access to the Distillery Concierge, a unique service that will assist members in every detail of their personal experience. From choosing their whiskey to planning an extended itinerary, the Concierge allows guests to discover the best Ireland has to offer, from world class golfing at illustrious courses to exploring some of the most picturesque scenery in the world.

Irish Distillers introduced the world to luxury Irish whiskey back in 1984 and Midleton Very Rare has since become the embodiment of exceptional quality, craftsmanship and collectability. The unveiling of the Midleton Very Rare Cask Circle Club and the new Midleton Very Rare Vintage Release heralds a new era for luxury Irish whiskey and is testament to the growing demand for our finest, prestige Irish whiskeys around the world.

We are proud of our position as long-standing guardians of our sector and we look forward to welcoming new additions to the Midleton Very Rare range in the years to come. Today’s launch allows Midleton Very Rare to further build upon its position as the pinnacle of Irish whiskey.
– Jean Christophe-Coutures: Chairman and CEO at Irish Distillers

Just two Master Distillers have had the privilege of preserving the legacy of Midleton Very Rare with only a select number of casks deemed of sufficient excellence and rarity to bear the Midleton Very Rare name. Midleton Very Rare 2017 has been specially blended from a hand selected batch of ex-Bourbon Barrels ranging in age from 12 years to 32 years. The 2017 edition also marks a redesign for the brand, featuring a unique bottle design and presentation box that further completes the overall Midleton Rare experience and better reflects the quality and rarity of the whiskey inside. The elegant bottle takes inspiration from a writer’s ink well and a soft dip in the shoulder echoes the nib of a pen, creating a subtle link to Ireland’s literary legacy.

It has been a privilege for me to continue the legacy of Midleton Very Rare that Barry Crockett started in 1984. Midleton Very Rare is rightfully regarded as the pinnacle of Irish whiskey with each vintage cherished by collectors and whisk(e)y enthusiasts all over the world. Due to the handcrafted nature of this whiskey, there are slight variances in taste from year to year which add to the special nature of this whiskey.

The 2017 cask selection includes some 32-year-old Midleton Grain Whiskey which will contribute the lighter floral perfume notes along with some citrus fruit. A 26-year-old Single Pot Still whiskey has also been selected, which delivers a wide spectrum of typical spice character, such as sweet cinnamon and clove.
– Brian Nation: Master Distiller

Bottled at 40% ABV and without chill-filtration, the new-look Midleton Very Rare Vintage Release 2017 is available from this month at the RRP of €180 and is available in the USA, Canada, Ireland and Ireland Travel Retail.
