Jura Whisky Launches Dram-Packed Tastival 2017!

April 27, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Single Malt Whisky’s Annual Island Whisky Festival Returns

Tickets are now on sale for Jura Tastival 2017 – which returns for a one-day single malt spectacular on Thursday 1st June, offering new ways to enjoy whisky, through a busy programme of one-of-a-kind taste experiences.

The event will run as part of the annual Feis Ile Festival, which attracts whisky fans from all over the world to distillery open days on Islay and neighbouring island, Jura, each year.

Tastival will see Jura’s only whisky distillery throw open its doors to put on a number of free and ticketed activities – from unique whisky tastings and tours, to live entertainment – including music from legendary Scots Trad band RURA – and a chance to join the Jura community at special meet and greets with the distillery team.

This year’s Tastival event is limited to one day only (it has spanned two days in previous years) – so whisky lovers are advised get in early to snap up tickets, which are set to be in high demand.

This year’s ticketed sessions include:
· The Jura Long Table – Dine with the Diurachs (the name for Jura’s community) at this ‘getting to know you’ session. A special one off lunch in the distillery’s Grainstore, guests will join the locals (including some distillery staff) to hear stories on island life as they enjoy Jura’s laid back take on street food, prepared with the freshest local produce, each dish designed to pair with a dram of Jura whisky.

· All Terrain Whisky Tasting – Discover the different sides of Jura and learn how the landscape inspires a whisky range as unique as the island itself. Venturing far beyond the realms of the distillery, the Jura bus will stop off at locations from serene beaches, to craggy mountain foots – with a whisky inspired by each location stashed for guests to find (if they listen to the clues) at every stop.

· Whisky 101 – Meet Whyte & Mackay Whisky Maker & Blender Gregg Glass in this unique session designed for both whisky newcomers and aficionados alike. Smashing perceptions on traditional whisky tastings, guests will be invited to take on a different ‘state of mind’ when it comes to single malt – sampling Jura in a number of non-fluid states, before an anonymous Q&A will give visitors the chance can ask anything they ever wanted to know about whisky…but were too afraid to ask!

· The Single Malt Masterclass – An exclusive masterclass hosted by Jura Distillery Manager Graham Logan, honorary distillers will get on-the-job whisky making experience – from learning how to keep a careful watch over the spirit gauge, to testing the mash tun and wash backs, rolling a barrel through the warehouse and siphoning whisky straight from the cask.

· Jura Jetty – Ticketholders will arrive at Tastival in true island style, cruising from Islay’s Port Askaig directly to Jura’s Craighouse, delivered to the heart of the event by Captain Nicol. On their journey, guests will enjoy a special tasting of travel retail exclusive Jura Turas-Mara the way it was meant to be experienced – with the wind and sea spray in your face.

Music, live entertainment and the opportunity chance to sample Jura’s range will be available in the Dramming Bar in the distillery’s Cooperage, where guests will have the first opportunity to try, and purchase, Tastival 2017, Jura’s limited edition bottling created to mark the festival.

A £5 general entry fee will include a brochure, souvenir glass and two drams at the bar. A cash bar will be available thereafter, with a full drinks menu including drams, cocktails and an exclusive Drygate beer brewed to pair with Jura’s Tastival 2017 bottling.

The distillery will also run free tours of the still house throughout the day on a first come, first served basis.

The island event will kick off a schedule of localised Tastival events to take place in Europe throughout the summer, and which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ticketed sessions vary between £15 – £45, with entry to the heart of the action in the Cooperage costing just £5 (including goody bag and two drams). Tickets on sale now.

Getting there from Islay: Jura will operate a free passenger ferry and coach shuttle service to and from the Port Feolin ferry station. For more information see www.jurawhisky.com.

Kilchoman Announces 100% Islay 7th Edition!

April 20, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

100% Islay 2017

Kilchoman, Islay’s Farm Distillery, are set to launch the 7th edition of their 100% Islay range. The 100% Islay releases are particularly special to Kilchoman with all parts of the whisky making process, from barley to bottle, completed on site at the farm. This marks these releases out as truly unique with Kilchoman being the only distillery in Scotland to produce Single Malt in this traditional hand crafted way.

Shipping on the 1st May!

The farm is based on the rugged west coast of Islay and nestled in the outbuildings is the distillery. They work throughout the year to grow, malt, distill, mature and bottle Kilchoman’s unique single malt using traditional farm distilling techniques not seen on Islay for generations.

Since day one we have not only been proud of the traditional methods revived to create the 100% Islay releases but also the quality of the spirit produced. We are now growing more barley than ever for future releases of this beautifully fresh and vibrant whisky.

– Anthony Wills: Kilchoman Founder and Managing Director

This, the 7th edition of the annually released limited edition, is a vatting of fresh and refill ex Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels filled in 2010 and bottled in 2017. This is the most mature expression released to date and as with all previous 100% Islay releases, the 7th edition has been produced from barley exclusively grown and malted at the distillery.

Kilchoman are the only Islay distillery to produce whisky in this traditional way, making this single malt truly 100% Islay. The peating level comes in slightly lighter than the rest of the Kilchoman range and creates a fresh and floral balance with the bourbon cask maturation.

From Barley to Bottling …

The development of the 100% Islay casks from the Inaugural release up to this, the oldest 100% Islay release, has been intriguing to see. As the bourbon barrel maturation influences the spirit over time it has taken on a real depth of character and complexity to add to the light citrus fruit and peat smoke of the Kilchoman spirit.

– Robin Bignal: Production Manager

Founded in 2005, Kilchoman is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland and was the first distillery to be built on Islay for over 124 years. Today Kilchoman is the only independently owned Islay distillery.

Kilchoman 100% Islay 7th Edition is bottled at 50% ABV and will be available worldwide from the 1st of May.

Two Scottish Distilleries Ditch Oil In Bid To Cut Costs & Emissions!

April 19, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ian MacMillan, Bladnoch

In a move to break their dependency on costly and inefficient oil heating, two more Scotch whisky distilleries have committed to switching their processes to run on cleaner LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) from leading supplier Flogas Britain. Similar projects have seen distilleries reduce their annual carbon emissions by more than 18%.

Both Ben Nevis Distillery in Fort William and Bladnoch Distillery in Newton Stewart have signed contracts with Flogas to overhaul their existing oil-fired distillery heating systems, and replace them with more modern, efficient LPG alternatives. They will also benefit from ongoing delivery of a reliable, cost-effective LPG fuel supply from Flogas to help meet their considerable energy needs.

We’re one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland, and being nestled at the foot of Ben Nevis means a conventional mains energy supply just isn’t an option for us. We’ve been relying on oil to heat our stills, but it’s well known for being a dirty and costly fuel, so we’ve asked Flogas to replace our whole heating system with an LPG alternative.

It’s set to boost our carbon credentials as a business and makes real long-term sense for us – we’re very much looking forward to seeing good results for years to come.
– Michael Ridpeath: Distillery Manager at Ben Nevis Distillery

Bladnoch has a rich history dating back to 1817, but had ceased production for several years before being taken into new ownership and restored to its former glory. Part of this restoration was about returning to traditional production methods, becoming much more efficient and environmentally aware – and our new LPG heating system will help fuel these, whilst also managing our environmental impact.

With Flogas supply, we’ll benefit from a smaller carbon footprint and all the convenience of a fuel we can rely on.
– Ian MacMillan: Master Distiller & Blender at Bladnoch Distillery

Flogas has more than 30 years’ experience helping off- and on-grid businesses meet their energy needs. As well as operating more depots than any other UK LPG supplier, it also provides LNG (liquefied natural gas) for large-scale heating and transport, and mains gas for small and medium businesses nationwide.

Whisky distilling is an energy-intensive process, so distillery owners across Scotland are faced with the same challenge: how to meet their heating requirements whilst keeping emissions and costs down. We’re very pleased to be helping Ben Nevis and Bladnoch do just that, as they join the increasing number of off-grid distilleries making the switch from oil to Flogas LPG.

With recent projects delivering annual savings of up to 19% on CO2 emissions and up to 20% on fuel bills, the benefits speak for themselves – and it’s easy to see why distilling has become such a growth area for us.
– Stacey Morgan: Sales & Marketing Director at Flogas

Leading Dutch distillery Toorank rebrands as Dutch Spirits

April 13, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

As part of the change, Dutch Spirits has launched a new website

Leading Dutch distiller, Toorank, has today announced a full rebrand and unveiled its new corporate identity, Dutch Spirits. The rebrand reflects the company’s ambition to become a global champion of Dutch drinks innovation as it embarks on a new growth phase that will take it beyond its current core markets.

Since owner Toon Blij bought Toorank from Metaxa in 1990, the business has grown to become a truly global player, trading in 50 markets worldwide, and is renowned for producing award-winning spirits. The company produces liquid for its own premium brands, such as Sloane’s Premium Dry Gin, as well as for an extensive list of over 1,300 challenger, third party and private label brands.

The decision to change our corporate identity was a result of our ambition to grow, both at home and internationally. We want to become the biggest Dutch distilling group and felt we needed a strong identity to achieve this.

We wanted an identity that reflected our Dutch heritage, as well as the passion and identity of our workforce, hence Dutch Spirits.
– Andy Mallows: Managing Director

Dutch Spirits’ innovative and creative approach to distilling has been sharpened by a long history of creating quality products both for its own portfolio and in successful partnerships, which it supports with its expansive and in-depth market knowledge.

The company has a strong track record in developing new, great tasting products for clients ranging from liqueurs to gins and whiskies to vodkas. Dutch Spirits provides total flavour concepts and a service that extends to label design, bottles, boxes and other promotional materials as well as manufacturing and looking after suppliers.

The one common ingredient across all our drinks is the people that work at Dutch Spirits. They are Dutch Spirits’ heart and soul and provide quality products that incorporate a highly flexible mix of innovation, design skills and manufacturing know-how.

Dutch Spirits also has the scale across its Dutch and Polish facilities to produce 90 million bottles annually, which ensures that partnerships with third parties have the best possible chance of commercial success.

We are more than a ‘one stop shop’, we will take you through all the steps and, most importantly, have an instinct for what works.

As part of the change, Dutch Spirits has launched a new website – www.dutchspirits.com – which looks to reflect a simplistic theme allowing its own products and those of its partners to shine.

We want to become the global partner of choice for the development, production and supply of spirits portfolios. As a family-owned business, we have developed a reputation for producing the world’s best tasting spirits and this will be the foundation of our future success.

Sampling Teeling’s The Revival Volume III!

April 13, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Revival Vol. III joins Teeling Whiskey’s range of award winning Irish whiskeys

Teeling Whiskey Unveils Third Bottling of The Revival Single Malt

Teeling Whiskey, Ireland’s leading independent Irish whiskey producer, is proud to unveil the third bottling of “The Revival”, a limited edition commemorative Single Malt. The Revival Volume III is being released to celebrate the 18-month anniversary of the opening of the Teeling Whiskey Distillery and will be limited to only 10,000 bottles.

The original Revival bottling was produced in 2015 to mark the opening of the Teeling Whiskey Distillery, the first new distillery in Dublin in over 125 years. The third edition of this bottling consists of a 14-Year-Old Single Malt Irish whiskey distilled in 2002, initially matured in ex-Bourbon casks before being given further maturation in 350 litre ex-Pineau Des Charentes casks to impart an extra pressed grape and dried fruit flavour unique to Irish whiskey. Further, the Revival Vol. III has been bottled at 46% ABV with no chill filtration to complete an Irish whiskey of true character.

The Revival Vol. III joins Teeling Whiskey’s range of award winning Irish whiskeys which have collected over 100 international awards over the past four years. The maturation from the ex-Pineau Des Charentes casks creates a unique palette pteasing taste profile, reminiscent of dried fruit and toffee pineapple rounded off with a toasted almond and dark chocolate bitterness that’s balanced perfectly with a lingering soft sweetness. A signature bouquet of honey and hazelnuts flavours tops off the dark chocolate undertones of this limited edition Single Malt.

It is hard to believe we are just 18 months away from having Irish whiskey distilled from our new distillery in Dublin and to honour this half way point we have decided to release something very unique to mark the occasion with the first ever Pineau des Charentes finished Irish whiskey.

Our third Revival release will be limited to only 10,000 bottles and sold both through our distillery as well as our domestic and international distributors.
– Jack Teeling: Founder and Managing Director of the Teeling Whiskey Company

Pineau des Charentes is a regional French aperitif, made in the southwestern regions of Charente, Charente-Maritime and, to a much lesser extent, Dordogne in western France. It is a fortified wine made from either fresh, unfermented grape juice or a blend of lightly fermented grape must, to which a Cognac eau-de-vie is added and then matured in oak barrels.

The Revival Vol III 14-Year-Old will retail for approximately £120.00 (GBP£110.00). The product will be available in Ireland through the Teeling Distillery in Newmarket Dublin 8, Dublin Airport, the Celtic Whiskey Stop and all good independent off licences and will then be rolled out to international markets such as the UK, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Italy.

The Revival Vol III 14 Year Old will retail for approximately £110.00.

Teeling Whiskey has very kindly sent me a sample. So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Teeling Whiskey The Revival III (46%)

Nose: Crisp green apples and pears. Caramel infused with rich vanilla.

Palate: Creamy mouthfeel. Caramel and cooked apple.

Finish: Quite dry, salty with pleasantly subtle peppery spices that grow in intensity. A Long finish.

Overall: Another powerful alcohol hit, much akin to the I & II, but appreciably smoother. Not my favourite of the trio but a worthy dram all the same.

Many thanks to Teeling Whiskey (@TeelingWhiskey) for sending the sample!

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.

ABV: 55.2%
Age: 24 Year Old.
Series: Wine Merchant's Collection.
Cask: Lustau Cask #01.
Bottles from Cask: 648.
Distilled/Bottled: 1992/2016.
Having spent more than two decades in American oak, the Wine Merchant’s Collection whiskies have then been “finished” by introducing them into casks which formerly held some of the world’s most coveted wines.
This particular whisky was distilled in 1992, and matured until 2014 in Hogshead casks. Having rested in these casks, it was then introduced to an American oak butt, formerly containing Oloroso Sherry, from Bodegas Lustau, the famous Spanish Sherry producer, to add an extra layer of complexity to the spirit.
Bodegas Lustau is perhaps the most notable Sherry producer in Jerez. Established in 1896 by José Ruiz-Berdejo as an Almacenista (a house where wines were matured to supply sherry shippers), Lustau has built a first-class reputation for the quality of its products. Its Sherries range in style from bone-dry Fino to rich Oloroso and unctuously sweet Pedro Ximénez.
The Glenrothes whisky experts kept a close eye on the spirit until, at last, it was judged to be perfectly balanced and mature – only then was it bottled. Unchill-filtered, natural in colour and bottled at cask strength resulting in an intense, distinctive and unusual expression.
Appearance: Clear and bright.
Bouquet: Citrus toffee, full and rich.
Palate: Creamy, full, lemon treacle.
Finish: Mid-length inviting second sip.

A Doctor, Tiddlywinks & That Boutique-y Whisky Company!

April 7, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The UK’s seven-time Tiddlywinks World Singles Champion Dr. Patrick Barrie

Multi-award-winning independent bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) proudly announces their sponsorship of the UK’s seven-time Tiddlywinks World Singles Champion Dr. Patrick Barrie with the release of a 24 year old Single Grain Scotch Whisky.

TBWC’s Cameronbridge 24 Year Old is a limited release of just 211 bottles!

That Boutique-y Whisky Company have released their first batch from the internationally renowned Cameronbridge Grain Distillery, a ‘squopping’ 24 Year Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky (RRP £64.95). TBWC is also proud to announce the exciting sponsorship of seven-time Tiddlywinks World Singles Champion, Dr. Patrick Barrie, who will be competing at the National Singles Competition at Downing College Cambridge this month in his bid to represent the United Kingdom in the next World Championship.

The World Singles is the game’s highest accolade”, he explains, “it’s played on a challenge basis where a player must become the National Singles champion in order to challenge the current World Singles champion to an official match.

While the exact origins of tiddlywinks are vague, the modern competitive version started in 1955. It may not be the most fashionable of sports, but it’s got a great mix of manual dexterity, strategy and tactics. I think that the image of tiddlywinks is set to change thanks to That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s sponsorship with their release from the Cameronbridge Grain Distillery, a distillery with nearly 200 years of history behind it.
– Dr. Barrie: Lecturer in Chemical Engineering – Cambridge University & playing tiddlywinks competitively since 1984!

Known for their fun graphic-novel style labels, as well as their award-winning whiskies, TBWC’s latest release features the seven-time champion in action at the World Tiddlywinks Final. There’s a respectful hush from the spectators as Patrick, squidger in hand, and carefully concentrating, lines up his second shot following the successful potting of his last wink.

TBWC’s Cameronbridge 24 Year Old is a limited release of just 211 bottles. A soft and gentle single grain, with notes of icing sugar, runny honey and rich golden syrup on the nose, while waves of vanilla, fresh pencil shavings and a gentle peppery spiciness come across on the palate.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s range of whiskies is available from fine retailers including Master of Malt, Amazon, Majestic Wine, Hedonism Wines, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Highland.
ABV: 42%.
Unit: 70cl.
Dalmore first introduced a 21-year-old expression back in the days of American Brands’ ownership during the 1990s. That variant contained around one-third whisky matured in sherry casks and the rest aged in bourbon wood. Ultimately, it was dropped from the line-up, leaving the 18-year-old as the standard bearer at the upper end of the regular age range, along with an annual 3,000-bottle limited release of 25-year-old.
The Dalmore Owners Whyte & Mackay Ltd. felt that there was room for another product in the upper age sphere, and in 2015 a new version of the 21-year-old was released, along with a 30-year-old retailing at four times the price. With the 21-year-old, master blender Richard Paterson departed from the previous bottling at the same age in a major way. He matured Dalmore for 10 years in American oak barrels before a further 11-year period of secondary maturation in first-fill Matusalem oloroso sherry butts from his favoured bodega of Gonzalez Byass, which has been supplying Dalmore distillery with casks for over 100 years.
Everyone knows that Dalmore thrives in sherry wood, and the result here is a sherry-matured classic; well-integrated, robust, yet refined and even elegant, with the brand’s hallmark rich orange, coffee, and chocolate characteristics being augmented by liquorice, cinnamon, and balsamic notes.
Only 8,000 bottles of the ‘new’ 21-year-old have been produced, and according to Richard Paterson, if there is to be another release at the same age in future, it will entail a different maturation regime, making this effectively a limited edition. Paterson has frequently used Gonzales Byass oloroso casks in previous Dalmore creations, but the results have rarely been bettered. —Gavin Smith / Whisky Advocate.
