Two limited-edition malts, Ledaig 19 Years Old and Tobermory 21 Years Old, have been released by Distell's Tobermory Distillery.
This Ledaig 19 Year Old is some of the first spirit distilled when peated single malt production commenced at Tobermory distillery in the late 1990s.
Peat-dried malted barley was married with naturally peat-infused water from a lochan high in the mountains above the village. The spirit was then matured in superior oak wood casks before being finished in Marsala wine casks.
Tasting Notes: Beautiful rich single malt with a mouth-filling sweetness of berries and dark chocolate with a full peat explosion of black pepper and bonfire smoke.

We’re delighted to announce the limited edition release of our most exclusive bottling to date; the balanced and full-bodied 35-year-old second release. The liquid is being introduced with just 670 bottles available globally.
Laid to rest for over three decades in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, the casks have been carefully chosen by distillery manager Gordon Bruce and master blender Stuart Harvey.
Giving rise to a unique dram that still retains its youthful edge; the 35-year-old has top notes of lemon curd, green apples and cut flowers followed by honey sweetness, creamy toffee, leather and spice. Warming wood smoke makes for a fragrant and rich aroma.
On the palate, it is oily and full-bodied with caramel honey and fresh vanilla complementing the subtle smokiness and warm spice.
Brand manager Stephanie Bridge commented: “The 35-year-old second release is a special expression for anCnoc, having been matured for more than three decades in our traditional dunnage warehouses which still retain their earthen floors and add so much to the quality and character of this special liquid The second release has lain in ex-bourbon barrels, offering fans something slightly different to the original expression. Our limited edition is a testament to the 35-year-old’s popularity with whisky lovers worldwide and we’re confident that this unique release will entice drinkers to add it to their collections.”
Colour: Baltic amber.
Nose: Top notes of lemon curd, green apples and cut flowers are followed by a heavier honey sweetness, creamy toffee, leather, spices and a pleasant touch of warming wood smoke, making for a fragrant and rich nose.
Taste: Oily and full-bodied. Honey and fresh vanilla sit firmly on the palate, with spiciness and, once again, slight smokiness woven in. The finish is long and rewarding, with hints of ground spices and caramel sweetness.
Non chill-filtered, natural colour.
anCnoc 35 year old 2nd release has matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels.

Since we launched the Compass Box Whisky Company back in 2000, we have always aimed to experiment, to innovate and to explore where others wouldn’t in the world of Scotch. No whisky is a greater example of this ambition than Flaming Heart.
First released in 2006, Flaming Heart was the first whisky to combine the rich, complex spice of Scotch aged in new French oak with the evocative peat-fired smoke of Islay malt. It created a genre-defying style that was smouldering, spicy, complex – and so popular that we re-released it three more times in the years that followed.
In this our fifteenth year, we felt compelled to revisit this unique style one more time. Our anniversary release is a huge, layered, long-lasting mouthful of a whisky to enjoy late into the night. Brooding, indulgent and older than ever before, this is a whisky born of oak, smoke and fire – with a big heart all of its own.
John Glaser, Whiskymaker.
Availability: A limited edition of 12,060 bottles. Bottled in August 2016.
Flavour Descriptors: A unique interplay between spice, sweet and smoke characteristics. Sweet fruits and wood-smoke on the nose. Fat and full-bodied on the palate with a spicy sweetness and a brooding complexity that is rich, sweet and addictively decadent.
Ratings: 96.5 Points and Scotch Vatted Malt of the Year / Jim Murray's 2017 Whisky Bible.

Irish Distillers’ Masters and Apprentices Unite to Create The Next Generation of Irish Whiskey

February 24, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Irish Distillers’ Masters and Apprentices Unite to Create The Next Generation of Irish Whiskey

Irish Distillers introduces METHOD AND MADNESS; a new range of experimental super premium whiskeys designed to push the boundaries of Irish whiskey. METHOD AND MADNESS launches with a series of unique whiskeys that underpin a continued commitment by Irish Distillers to experimentation and innovation at the home of Irish whiskey in Midlelton, Co. Cork, Ireland.

METHOD AND MADNESS aims to harness the creativity of Midleton’s whiskey masters through the fresh talent of its apprentices. Taking inspiration from the famous Shakespearean quote, ‘Though this be madness, yet there is method in ’t’, METHOD AND MADNESS is designed to reflect a next generation Irish spirit brand with a measure of curiosity and intrigue (MADNESS), while honouring the tradition and expertise grounded in the generations of expertise at the Midleton Distillery (METHOD).

Available in the UK, France and Ireland from this month

The METHOD AND MADNESS range launches with four new Irish Whiskeys, each with its own twist; a Single Grain Irish Whiskey Finished in Virgin Spanish Oak; a Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Finished in French Chestnut; a Single Malt Irish Whiskey enhanced with French Limousin Oak; and a 31 Year Old Single Cask, Single Grain Limited Edition bottled at cask strength.

At the Midleton Distillery, we are committed to innovation and experimenting with new whiskey styles. We are also invested in training and nurturing the next generation of Irish whiskey makers and this project really brings that commitment to life.

The passing on of knowledge and skills is part of our DNA from our long line of master distillers, to the generations of coopers that served their apprenticeships at the Midleton Distillery. In fact, this summer our apprentice cooper, Killian O’Mahony will become our first qualified cooper in over 40 years.
– Brian Nation: Master Distiller at Irish Distillers

METHOD AND MADNESS is a great opportunity for myself and the team to work closely with and learn from the whiskey masters. Our Micro Distillery in Midleton will act as an experimental hub enabling us to trial and test new spirit types followed by aging in new cask types. The process will see new METHOD AND MADNESS releases but also others that may never see the light of day.

It’s a really exciting project to be involved with.
– Karen Cotter: Irish Distillers graduate distiller

At Irish Distillers, we are constantly searching for new ways to bring Irish whiskey to a wider audience. Jameson has been the iconic brand which has led the way, supported by niche connoisseur brands such as Redbreast, The Spot Range and Midleton Very Rare so with METHOD AND MADNESS, we are able to not only create an outlet for our whiskey makers to really experiment but also to create a uniquely original brand which will pique the interest of spirits drinkers throughout the world.

– Brendan Buckley: Global Innovation & Prestige Whiskeys Director at Irish Distillers

The METHOD AND MADNESS Single Grain, Single Pot Still and Single Malt Irish Whiskeys will be available in the UK, France and Ireland from this month at the respective RRPs of €49, €69 and €79. The METHOD AND MADNESS 31 Year Old, Single Cask, Single Grain will be available in the same territories from April 2017, priced at €1,500.

This particular Single Grain Clan Denny, aged for 26 years in North American oak casks, comes from the Invergordon Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Jameson Unveils Sixth Limited Edition Bottle For St. Patrick’s Day!

February 10, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The sixth limited edition bottle of its annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities

Jameson, the world’s favourite Irish whiskey, has unveiled its sixth limited edition bottle ahead of its annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The most recent in a series of collaborations with Irish artists, this year’s bottle has been designed by Dublin-based designer and illustrator, Steve McCarthy.

Photo: Eoin Holland – www.eoinholland.com

McCarthy’s creative starting point came from the Jameson family motto Sine Metu – or without fear – which has been at the heart of the company since it was founded in 1780 and lives on today. He also took inspiration from a commonly used Irish saying that goes hand in hand with Sine Metu, ‘to chance your arm’.

Legend has it that in 1492, ‘Black James’ Butler and his men found themselves barricaded behind the door to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. On the other side was Gearóid Fitzgerald who, tired of the constant fighting between the clans, decided it was time to make peace. Fitzgerald ordered his men to cut a hole in the door before extending his hand through the gap as a token of friendship. Rather than cut his arm off with a sword, Butler shook it and the long standing feud came to an end, giving Dublin one of its most famous sayings: to chance your arm.

Over 500 years later, Dublin is still a place where social barriers break easily and friendships come about in the most unexpected of ways and this has been brought to life on the label through two outstretched hands exchanging a handshake, framed by the St. Patrick’s Cathedral door of Reconciliation. The Sine Metu motto has been tattooed on to the knuckles of each hand as a reminder that when we fear a bit less, we live a bit more.

McCarthy has included some of the Irish capital’s most recognisable monuments in his bold and colourful design, such as the Ha’penny Bridge and Smithfield tower, and has also peppered the label with additional details that are reflective of his own knowledge of the city and sense of humour.

I wanted it to feel like there was a deeper meaning to what you see. For me, the Jameson motto is very emotive and I hope that with my design I am able to speak to others around the world who have also been inspired by Sine Metu, or those who might still with this release, to fear a bit less to live a bit more.
– Steve McCarthy

The release of the sixth limited edition bottle kicks off Jameson’s global St. Patrick’s Day celebrations for 2017 and will be available in markets including the USA, Ireland and Russia from February 2017, with a recommended retail price of €30 (or local equivalent).

Our limited edition Jameson bottle for 2017 keeps the spirit of John Jameson alive and celebrates a very Irish saying that dates back to the 15th century but is as relevant as ever today. As Jameson found when he established the Bow Street distillery in 1780, fearing less can help you reap rewards you never thought possible and we still proudly live by this ethos.

Steve’s design perfectly balances the rich heritage of Dublin with the modern design and Irish wit of Jameson, and we hope that Irish whiskey fans will be inspired by the bottle in their own St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Four Roses / Small Batch Limited Edition 2016 Bourbon
Four Roses / Small Batch Limited Edition 2016 Bourbon

£130.00
Country: American
Region: American
Age:
Strength: 55.6%
70cl

Summary: Country/Region: USA.
Unit: 70cl.
ABV: 55.6%
History: "In 1884, Paul Jones Jr, moved his thriving business to Louisville, Kentucky, where he opened an office in Whiskey Row. Four years later, he trademarked the name Four Roses, claiming a history of production and sales back to the 1860s. Four Roses is the only Bourbon Distillery that combines five proprietary yeast strains with two separate mash bills to produce ten distinct Bourbon Recipes, each with their own unique character, spiciness, and rich fruity flavours. Despite a history dating back to 1888, the iconic name, and its popularity, Four Roses stopped selling Bourbon in the US fr 40 years. The whiskey was so popular in Asia that the Japanese Kirin Brewing Company bought the business in 2002 and soon after reintroduced the brand to the US market."
Production: Yellow Label remains true to its original recipe, although this is tweaked to achieve consistency during blending. A blend of all ten Four Roses recipes (approximately 2/3rd OE and 1/3rd OB mash bills) and is aged for between 5 and 6 years. It is generally blended from no more than 200 casks. A brand that dates back to the late 19th century. This Yellow Label bottling of Four Roses was originally sold the European and Japanese markets and is made up of whiskeys aged between 5 and 6 years of age.
Tasting note: Spicy nose, rich, mellow and fruity, hints of sweet oak & caramel. Creamy, mellow palate with ripened red berry flavours, it''s rich, spicy, well-balanced. The finish is soft, smooth & quite long.

Country: American
Region: American

Age:
Strength:

Summary: Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey refuses to be forgotten. First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, the brand, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by prohibition. The brand reemerged after prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry’s production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill keeps this historic Maryland mark alive with this award-winning six year old, 110 proof offering.

Sazerac / Straight Rye Whiskey

£49.50

Country: American
Region: American

Age:
Strength:
70cl

Summary: The One and Only New Orleans Original. Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye Whiskey that dates back to the 1800’s, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans.

It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all.

Unique Features: With its distinctive bottle reminiscent of early settlers and “coffeehouses,” it’s easy to see how the Sazerac Whisky became a staple in the creation of one of America’s oldest cocktails.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of clove, vanilla, anise and pepper. Subtle notes of candies spices and citrus. The big finish is smooth with hints of liquorice.

Ratings: Double Gold Medal – 2015 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
