After sampling this vast range of casks Billy was keen to showcase GlenAllachie bottled at natural strength. The GlenAllachie 10 year old Cask Strength Batch 1 is a limited edition product bottled with only 2,000 cases available worldwide.

STRENGTH: 55.4 % Vol.

No vintage or age that I can spot this time, jazz is timeless. Matured in both American and European ‘bodega’ oak casks. Bodega doesn’t obligatorily mean ‘Spanish’, in case you’re wondering. They have bagpipes in Spain, why couldn’t they have bodegas in Scotland?

COLOUR: white wine, which comes as a surprise.

NOSE: it is a very bright, clean, punchy young Lagavulin, rather in the style of the popular 12yo CS. Seawater, lime, lemon, hessian, cigar smoke, seaweed, oysters, whelks, razor clams, cockles, mussels, langoustines… I’m joking! With water: damp raw wool and Islay mud.

MOUTH (neat): exceptionally clean, crisp, lemony and smoky malt, one hundred percent spirit-driven as far as I can tell, pristine, salty, kippery… So, a blade. As often, it’s just a notch sweeter and fatter than its colleagues from the south shore, and we aren’t against that. With water: salt up, tar up, fish down. A little more austere now.

FINISH: long, with a perfect tarriness, and no sweetness whatsoever this time. Comments: there was more sherry in earlier ‘Jazz’ Lagavulins. Now, I’m a sucker for both styles.

TASTING NOTES:  Serge at whiskyfun.com.

Sampling “Steel Bonnets” From Lakes Distillery – Much More Than Just A Blend!

September 11, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Steel Bonnets retails for around £64.95

Steel Bonnets, The Lakes Distillery’s blend of English and Scotch malt whisky, has recently been awarded a Gold Medal in the World Whisky Ultra-Premium category (whiskies priced over £51) by the prestigious Spirits Business Awards. More info. here.

The Lakes Distillery kindly sent me a sample to try (thanks very much!) so I thought I’d put my taste-buds to the grindstone and get down to the task of sampling whisky!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

“I’m sure the tastes would have developed even more with time but it didn’t last that long in the glass!”

Steel Bonnets (46.6%)

Nose: Crunchy red apples, vanilla and smooth caramel fudge abound. There’s also some oak wood and a little citrusy lemon.

Palate: Vanilla, caramel and crisp apples.

Finish: Quite long finish with some nice peppery spice countered with sweet vanilla. End notes of tobacco dryness and also (surprisingly!) a little salt.

Overall: Much more than just a simple, one-dimensional blend. Steel Bonnets is a smooth, sweet sensation with some added spice kick at the end.
I’m sure the tastes would have developed even more with time but it didn’t last that long in the glass!

Steel Bonnets retails for around £64.95

Irish Distillers Launches Jameson Cold Brew – A Classic Combination Of Irish Whiskey & Coffee!

September 7, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jameson Cold Brew – the classic combination of Irish whiskey and coffee

Jameson Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, is set to pilot a new and innovative take on the classic combination of Irish whiskey and coffee; Jameson Cold Brew.

Jameson Cold Brew will be trialled in limited quantities from September 2018

Jameson Cold Brew will be trialled in limited quantities from September 2018 in response to the growing global appetite for Irish whiskey, quality coffee and coffee-driven cocktails such as the espresso martini.

#JamesonColdBrew is a combination of triple-distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey and refreshing cold brew coffee extract, crafted from the finest, 100% Fairtrade arabica beans from Columbia and Brazil.

The result is a smooth, new Irish whiskey experience, with a bold coffee taste balanced with charred wood on the palate and a warming mouthfeel on the finish.

Underpinning the long-standing association between Jameson and coffee, Jameson Cold Brew is best served over ice or in a coffee cocktail such as the Jameson Cold Brew martini or the Jameson Cold-Fashioned. The pilot innovation is set to inspire bartenders and appeal to lovers of whiskey, coffee and food with a new Jameson experience that can be enjoyed from day to night.

Jameson Cold Brew is set to tap into the rise in popularity of both Irish whiskey and coffee culture in key cities around the world, typified by all-day coffee shops that cater for both a daytime caffeine fix and evening cocktail experience.

Bottled at 35% ABV, the new release will debut in the Jameson Distillery Bow St, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Dublin Airport from September 2018 at an RRP €28.50.

Over the past ten years, we have seen the continued rise in popularity of both Irish whiskey and craft coffee culture, and while the two are no strangers in the glass we wanted to modernise this iconic duo.

Jameson Cold Brew combines the best of both worlds in a new and refreshing way and we are confident that Irish whiskey and coffee fans alike will enjoy the taste experience it offers.

Dailuaine Flora & Fauna 16 Year old Returns – Available From Edencroft!

September 7, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Dailuaine / Flora & Fauna 16 Year old

Dailuaine Flora & Fauna 16 Year old Returns!

After a both unexpected and unwelcome absence, (and amidst unpleasant rumours of it’s never returning), we are delighted that the beautifully sherried, complex and delicious Dailuaine 16 Year Old Flora & Fauna is back in stock!.

Dailuaine distillery lies tucked between the foot of Ben Rinnes and the river Spey. The name is taken from the gaelic ‘dail uaine’ meaning green valley, and it’s a title that sits well with the verdant, dew-fresh origins of this naturally fragrant Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

This is a complicated malt, full and sweet, yet also citric-fresh, that can impress mightily.

The Dailuaine 16 Year Old Flora & Fauna is now available to order from the Edencroft Website (subject to availability.)

“Steel Bonnets” Wins GOLD In Luxury Masters Award For The Lakes Distillery!

September 5, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Luxury Masters competition aims to reward the finest luxury spirits on the global stage

Steel Bonnets, The Lakes Distillery’s blend of English and Scotch malt whisky, has been awarded a Gold Medal in the World Whisky Ultra-Premium category (whiskies priced over £51) by the prestigious Spirits Business Awards.

The Luxury Masters competition aims to reward the finest luxury spirits on the global stage. Chaired by The Spirits Business and assessed by a panel of leading spirits specialists, Steel Bonnets was the only World Whisky in its category to secure a Gold Medal award.

Speaking following a blind-tasting, the panel of whisky experts from across the globe commented that Steel Bonnets was ‘full and warm’ with ‘green apple, slight wood smoke’ and a palate of ‘cinnamon and plum.’

Created with the highest quality malt whiskies from both sides of the border, Steel Bonnets is a combination of The Lakes Single Malt from England and some of the most respected malts from Scotland. It is the world’s first blend of English malt and Scotch malt whisky.

The name pays homage to the memory of the English and Scottish people who lived in the Border Marches from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the East to Carlisle in the West during the 13th – 17th centuries.

I’m incredibly proud that Steel Bonnets has been recognised by some of the world’s leading whisky experts for its excellence. Our Master Whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi has created something very special.

This is the third year of the competition and the excellence demonstrated in our category confirms the emphasis leading whisky makers are putting on taste and quality. With the growing trend for customers to spend more and drink less this is an increasingly important award for premium spirits.

Our ambition is to establish The Lakes Distillery as a luxury global whisky brand and this recognition is another significant step towards this. Steel Bonnets now sits alongside world brands including Sullivan’s Cove of Tasmania and Chivas Regal Ultis, both Gold award winners and I’m absolutely thrilled.
– Paul Currie: Founder and Chief Operating Officer of The Lakes Distillery

I’m honoured that Steel Bonnets has received a Gold Medal. It is very rewarding that the knowledgeable tasting panel appreciated this unique whisky.

– Dhavall Gandhi: The Lakes Distillery Master Whiskymaker
