The New Rebel Yell French Barrel Special Finish – On Sale In The UK First!

July 31, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The new Rebel Yell French Barrel Special Finish – toasted in French Oak wine barrels

www.luxrowdistillers.com is launching its first ‘international release’ bourbon as it continues to meet growing demand from whiskey drinkers in the UK.

6,000 bottles will be released in the first year, with the bourbon on-sale from October at £30

The new Rebel Yell French Barrel Special Finish will be the first bourbon it hasn’t released for sale in the U.S. and bears the secondary-finishing hallmarks of Lux Row’s head distiller and master blender, John Rempe.

The bourbon was finished in toasted French Oak wine barrels for 6 months, creating a robust mouth feel with plenty of oak, spice and a hint of chocolate and ginger on the rear palate.

6,000 bottles will be released in the first year, with the bourbon on-sale from October at £30.

The new Rebel Yell French Barrel Special Finish comes closely after the release of John Rempe’s Blood Oath Pact No. 5.

This rare whiskey sold-out before bottling and is created by carefully blending three bourbons; a 13 year old mahogany bourbon which is peppery with shavings of dark chocolate, an 11 year old silky wheated bourbon rich with vanilla and honey, and an eight year old bourbon finished in Caribbean rum barrels to impart orange, brown sugar and warm island spice.

The fifth release of the Blood Oath has proved as popular as its predecessors, quickly selling-out. This provided the inspiration for the Rebel Yell French Barrel Special Finish. We wanted to create something unique for the growing number of bourbon connoisseurs in the UK, which is why we decided to launch this whiskey outside the U.S.

Finishing in the toasted oak wine barrel creates a real point of difference, giving the bourbon more depth and complexity in terms of its layers of flavour. Secondary-finishing is bourbon’s equivalent to year of vintage in single malt Scotches. It’s a great way to create something truly one-off.

There’s a growing appreciation of bourbon here in the UK, with real interest in stories about how the whiskeys are made and a keenness among consumers to seek out new and unique flavours. Small batch and limited editions will always prove popular amongst connoisseurs, but we’re seeing secondary-finishing satisfy both demand amongst bourbon purists as well as attracting new drinkers to the category.
– John Rempe: Lux Row’s head distiller and master blender

The Rebel Yell French Barrel Special Finish will be available in the UK, France and Italy, and will be distributed by Cellar Trends in the UK.

Redbreast Takes Off With New Packaging!

July 23, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

New Redbreast packaging set to broaden brand’s appeal and recruit a new audience

Irish Distillers has unveiled a new look for its iconic Redbreast range, more than a century after the brand was first introduced.

Redbreast is The world’s largest selling single pot still Irish whiskey

The world’s largest selling single pot still Irish whiskey has been given a refreshed look to highlight Redbreast’s strong heritage and endearing brand personality, while broadening its appeal to a new audience of consumers driven by curiosity, discovery and authenticity.

Bottles will now feature the Robin Redbreast, hand drawn by illustrator Denise Nestor, and dynamically brought to life in different flight positions across the range. Tasting notes on the front label have been added to showcase the unique characteristics of each expression, accentuated by a brighter cream colour and craft textured background on the revamped bottle.

The iconic bottle shape is retained but now features raised new tactile embossing while the capsules have been updated with a vibrant colour palette to differentiate each variant and help whiskey lovers on their journey of discovery through the range. The range of gift cartons have also been upgraded while Redbreast 21 Year Old is presented in a wooden box to reflect the premium nature of the product.

Information from Irish Distillers’ archives indicates that the iconic Redbreast bottle dates back to at least 1912, when Jameson Irish Whiskey entered into an agreement with the Gilbey’s Wines & Spirits Import Company to supply them with a new spirit from their Bow St. Distillery for maturation.

The new Redbreast design will be released throughout the year

The new Redbreast design will be released throughout the year, with Redbreast 12 Year Old, Redbreast 15 Year Old and Redbreast Lustau available from July. The new packaging will be introduced to Redbreast 21 Year Old and Redbreast 12 Cask Strength from autumn 2019.

Redbreast has gone from strength to strength to become the largest selling and most decorated single pot still Irish whiskey in the world. We are committed to investing in the success of Redbreast and are confident that the premium new design will do justice to the exceptional expression in each bottle to attract a new generation of whiskey drinkers.

We look forward to Redbreast flying off the shelves around the world as the Irish whiskey renaissance continues.

Sampling 37.119 “Plum Sauce Rancio-Fest” – The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies Latest Outturn!

July 18, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

SMWS 37.119 “Plum Sauce Rancio-Fest”

It’s always going to be a good day when the SMWS release a new dram so I reckon today is officially a good day!

Because today marks the release of their latest, members only, offering: SMWS 37.119 “Plum Sauce Rancio-Fest”.

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a pre-release sample to try – thanks guys!

The 37.119 is a Speyside dram, packed with flavour and very morish to boot as my tasting notes testify! As usual though, stocks are limited and demand will be predictably high.

Currently, there are only 39 Left In Stock!

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – SMWS 37.119 “Plum Sauce Rancio-Fest” (56.6%)

A Speyside (Cragganmore Distillery) 16 year old, distilled on 11th. June 2002. Matured initially for 14 years in a Bourbon hogshead before being transferred to a 1st. fill ex-px hogshead.

222 bottles released.

Nose: Glorious sherry with a little port. Vanilla fudge, apples and old furniture with wisps of dark chocolate.

Palate: Plums, stewed fruits, chocolate, mint and vanilla. There’s fine cognac flavours as well!

Finish: Very smooth finish with some light pepper and a little salty dryness. But the flavoursome, fruity, sweetness dominates overall.

Overall: A muscular dram but tempered with an amazing array of fine flavours. I tried it with a little water and to be honest, it didn’t do anything for me – BUT it is a powerful dram and a few drops might suit some.

Buy SMWS 37.119 “Plum Sauce Rancio-Fest”
£75.00 to Members

Irish Distillers Regain ‘World Whisky Producer Of The Year’ Trophy!

July 12, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Irish Distillers team collect the World Whisky Producer of the Year Trophy at the 2019 ISC ceremony

Irish Distillers has regained its ‘World Whisky Producer of the Year’ crown at the International Spirits Challenge – winning the Trophy for the first time since 2016 at the prestigious awards ceremony in London last night.

Irish Distillers scooped the highest recognition for World Whisky at the competition after scoring the highest medals across its family of Irish whiskeys – beating out whiskey portfolios from Ireland, Japan and the USA. The result follows a stellar year at the competition for Midleton Distillery in which it scooped an outstanding 24 medals, including four new Double Gold medals.

Introduced to celebrate the very best in show, whiskeys across the Jameson, Powers and Midleton
ranges were the only Irish whiskeys tasted at the competition to receive the Double Gold honour in 2019. Midleton Very Rare Barry Crockett Legacy, introduced in 2011 as part of Irish Distillers’ commitment to rejeavenating the single pot still Irish whiskey category, scooped a Double Gold medal and also went on to win the Tasting Tropy for the best Irish whiskey.

The International Spirits Challenge also honoured Midleton Very Rare 2018, Powers Three Swallows Release and the newly-released Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength with Double Gold medals, in addition to 5 Gold medals for Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition, Jameson 18 Year Old, Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength, Redbreast 21 Year Old and Powers Gold Label.

On the continued success of the 2019 awards season, Master Distiller Brian Nation commented: “We are delighted to reclaim our place as World Whisky Producer of the Year at the ISC and to see such excellent results continue across the portfolio as we move further into the 2019 awards season. It’s fantastic to see the Midleton Very Rare family perform so well – an appropriate accolade for the pinnacle of Irish whiskey. These awards are a tribute to the craftsmen and women at Midleton Distillery Co. Cork, past and present, who work tirelessly to produce whiskeys of unrivalled quality. We look forward to seeing what the remainder of the 2019 will bring!”

Jameson’s New ‘Triple Triple’ – Ideal For The Adventurous Whiskey Drinker!

July 11, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

JAMESON ‘TRIPLE TRIPLE’

Jameson Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has announced an exciting addition to its family of Irish whiskeys; Jameson Triple Triple (#JamesonTripleTriple).

Available exclusively in global travel retail!

Available exclusively in global travel retail, the new offering is a fresh take on the signature smoothness of Jameson that has been elevated through triple cask maturation – ideal for the adventurous whiskey drinker.

Made in Midleton Distillery, County Cork, Jameson Triple Triple has been triple distilled and blended from a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks with the addition of hand-selected casks that have been seasoned with fortified wine from Malaga.

The Malaga cask contribution adds notes of citrus, orchard fruits and spice resulting in a whiskey that has a subtle sweetness and an extra drop of smoothness. Jameson Triple Triple is bottled at 40% ABV and available in 1L format globally at the RRP of €32.

At Jameson, we’ve known that good things come in threes ever since John Jameson set up his distillery on Bow Street in Dublin and introduced the world to triple-distilled Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Jameson Triple Triple is no exception to this rule. Our single pot still and single grain Irish whiskeys have been further enhanced through triple cask maturation to create an exciting new taste experience.
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender at Midleton Distillery

Jameson’s approachability has been key to its success around the world, and with its extra smooth yet subtly sweet character, we expect Jameson Triple Triple to further propel the brand forward in the global travel retail sphere.
– Brendan Buckley: International Marketing Director at Irish Distillers

Tasting notes by Billy Leighton, Master Blender at the Midleton Distillery:

Nose: Initial fruit notes of sweet pear that develop into zesty citrus peel with some dark fruits in the background. The American oak adds a rich wood spice contribution along with sweet notes of vanilla, chocolate and toasted oak. Hints of cinnamon and clove delicately work in balance with the sweet Malaga wine cask influence.

Taste: Luscious, with sweet orchard fruits and light hints of blackcurrants, plums and raisins. The spices slowly build adding depth with hints of clove and black pepper, layered over the oak tannins adding dark chocolate and liquorice.

Finish: Lingering, with the spices slowly fading to reveal the fruits and oak.

The King is back! Following its success in 2015, the Rìgh Seumas I (pronounced ray shay-muss) returns for a second batch. ‘Rìgh Seumas’ translates as ‘King James’, named in honour of the master blender, Jim McEwan. Building on Jim’s blend, the Whisky Creations Team has introduced a young, boisterous, peaty Islay malt.

At the heart of this powerful blend is the spirit of Bruichladdich, along with mature malts from Arran, Tobermory, Auchentoshan and Rhosdhu, all matured in a French red wine barrique. Into this luxurious blend, they added a youthful Caol Ila, continuing the Murray McDavid legacy of balancing spirit and oak.

The much-loved Peatside is back with a rich, luscious twist. The previous batch of peated malts started its journey to maturity in bourbon and finished in Madeira casks. However, this vatting of malts has spent the first half of its life in bourbon casks and impressively matured in two first fill Pedro Ximènez Sherry hogsheads for its final years. By further maturing Scotch whisky in fresh casks, their Whisky Creations Team can showcase a brilliant balance between oak and spirit. This Peatside is a perfect example of the Art of Maturation that they are dedicated to at Murray McDavid.

NOSE: sweet char, fruits, smoked kippers.

PALATE: lush fruits, oak spice, peat.

FINNISH: long, sweet hickory.

The original Hedonism – Their first ever bottling – explored a brave new world of flavour previously uncharted in the world of Scotch. The world’s first Blended Grain Scotch Whisky, it was a whisky so unique that it created its own category.

Hedonism will always mean something extra to us and in the years following the original release in 2000, Compass Box have returned to the Hedonism concept on three further occasions – Hedonism Maximus, Hedonism 10th Anniversary and Hedonism Quindecimus.

They recently stumbled upon a single cask of exceptional aged grain whisky in the style of Hedonism and they knew it was time to revisit the concept for a 5th time.

Sometimes, the character of a single cask of whisky will stir our minds and inspire us to complement it to create something even more compelling. That is the case with this limited edition Hedonism whisky. We call it The Muse.

The name refers to the exceptional cask we discovered — a vatting of very old grain whiskies from different distilleries, combined many years ago and left to age together in American oak. The sellers of this cask did not know the provenance of the distilleries, but that didn’t matter to us. Its taste was remarkable, with great depth, and very much in the spectrum of flavours — honey, vanilla, pastry cream — of a Hedonism whisky.

The Muse is also a nod to the woman portrayed at the centre of our Hedonism labels – the first woman, as far as we know, ever to feature on a Scotch whisky label and the image we featured on our first-ever bottling.

Women make up the majority of our team here at Compass Box, which is unusual in our industry. This diversity of perspective makes us, I believe, a better business.

John Glaser, Whiskymaker.

TASTING NOTES: Aromas and flavours reminiscent of vanilla, marzipan and honey.  Full on the palate, round and with a very sweet impression.  Very long finish that echoes the vanilla and marzipan.

Love love love the funny label (my cats love it too). This baby’s said to be a vatting of Blair Athol, Dalmore, and Glen Garioch. Which rather makes sense, doesn’t it.

COLOUR: straw.

NOSE: malty, I’d say. That was the easy part, then I’m finding orchard fruits, apples and plums, then breads, then oatcakes, then crème brulée. We remain close to the barley and even to the ground, which is just fine.

MOUTH: really good, as good as a middle-aged ‘natural’ vatting of shy-ish malts can be. Bread, brioche, malt, more oats, sour apples, and touches of oranges. That may be Dalmore. The body’s good.

FINISH: medium, very malty, barleyish, and natural. Beer in the aftertaste. Comments: totally natural malt whisky, integrally malt-forward, with nothing in the way (peat, sherry, oak, wine, whatever). The 21 yo had more asperities, but that’s normal, this one’s only 18. Vive la nature!

TASTING NOTES: Serge Whisky Fun.
