Sampling The Kilchoman 100% Islay 9th. Edition – What Could Be Better?

September 27, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Kilchoman 100% Islay 9th Edition

Kilchoman has released their latest edition in their 100% Islay range, Scotland’s only Single Farm Single Malt.

The Kilchoman 100% Islay 9th Edition has been distilled from their 2007 and 2009 barley crops and is a vatting of 43 ex-bourbon barrels matured for over 9 years in their on-site dunnage warehouses.

Available Now!

Bottled at 50% abv with a total bottle release of just 12,000 bottles this Edition is bound to be popular AND disappear off the shelves quickly!

The 100% Islay range has been released annually since 2011 and their whiskies are distilled solely from barley grown in the distillery’s surrounding fields.

This barley is then malted, distilled, matured and eventually bottled – ALL on site – an unmatched, unbroken chain of creation from barley to bottle!

With barley origins, varieties and farm distillers one of the industry’s hot topics, their 100% Islay range remains Scotland’s only Single Farm Single Malt.

The 9th Edition marks a return to the bourbon barrel maturation of previous 100% Islay releases. (Last year’s 8th edition contained roughly 50% sherry maturation.)

Our 100% Islay spirit pairs seamlessly with ex-bourbon barrels. The lower peating level (20ppm) allows the natural floral sweetness of the spirit to shine through whilst a higher age profile adds layers of overripe tropical fruit and stewed plums whilst the high ABV makes it no lightweight.

I’m delighted with how the 9th Edition has come together and as ever, I look forward to hearing people’s opinions.
– Anthony Wills: Kilchoman Founder and Master Distiller

The Kilchoman 100% Islay 9th Edition will retail for approximately £71.94 and is available now.

Kilchoman (@Kilchomanwhisky) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks Kilchoman!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes: The Kilchoman 100% Islay – 9th Edition (50%)

No chill filtration or colouring – peating level of 20ppm.

Colour: Pale straw.

Nose: Sweet smoke aromas with soflty burning wood, peat and tempered by crisp green apples.

Palate: A light, thin dram with some dry smoke, sweet vanilla and subtle smokey peat. There’s citrus fruits and apple in there as well.

Finish: Plenty of peppery spice comes through very quickly and powerfully! A pleasant finish with a little salt at the end.

Overall: This dram gets better and better!
The soft, smokey flavours combine perfectly with a light sweetness which is just divine.
The longer in the glass and exposed to the air, the tastier it gets.
The peat balance is perfect. A dram to savour as the nights draw in and winter comes ever closer.
My advice: turn off the television, unplug the phone, dim the lights and sit back and enjoy this dram.
What could be better?

Jack Daniel’s Recreates Their Two Original Saloons For London Cocktail Week!

September 18, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Tennessee Calling for Jack Daniels

In the early 1900s, when Tennessee was a wet state, Jack Daniel was inspired by the bars he saw in Nashville – ranging from questionable joints to fine establishments – and, ever the entrepreneur, decided to open two saloons in his native Lynchburg – the White Rabbit and Red Dog.

The event celebrates London Cocktail Week’s 10th anniversary

This year to celebrate London Cocktail Week’s 10th anniversary and to host the final of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Calling IV cocktail competition, these two saloons will be resurrected for two nights only on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th October from 6pm to late.

Situated opposite each other, clean graffiti will guide guests to experience both pop-up bars that will be taking over Stoke Newington’s Original Sin as Red Dog and one of the World’s 50 Best Bars Mint Gun Club as White Rabbit.

WHITE RABBIT vs. RED DOG

Proud to sit as comfortably in the best hotel bars as it does in rock ‘n’ roll dive bars, Jack Daniel’s is offering something for everyone this London Cocktail Week with its pop-up bars White Rabbit, which was once home to Tennessee’s finest cocktails and most elegant and well-heeled clientele, and Red Dog – a Tennessee dive bar personified.

Manned by two teams of six of the UK’s best bartenders, each bar will be offering a series of bespoke, crafted cocktails to reflect the original saloons.

Journey down to the basement of Original Sin’s Red Dog, kick the jukebox into action and pull up a stool at Jack Daniel’s quintessential honky-tonk dive bar.

With its wooden bar and open brickwork adorned with vintage neon signs, US flags and scrap metal license plates, guests will be transported to the dusty roads of Nashville whilst they sip on their drink of choice in the most dubious of joints.

For a more refined experience follow the sound of piano keys over the road to Mint Gun Club’s White Rabbit saloon. Enter through a hidden bookcase into a 1920s style bar where an old-style cinema projector will play out vintage footage, with fringed lampshades hanging elegantly over its impeccable bar serving exquisitely sophisticated cocktails.

THE WINNER TAKES ALL

With each bar vying for the title, hop across the road and back again to decide which is your favourite bar as the two teams go head-to-head to be crowned the winner.

Inspired by the mentorship of Jasper ‘Jack’ Daniel by Dan Call and Master Distiller Nearest Green, Tennessee Calling IV sees industry visionaries Tom Loosli of Original Sin and Rich Hunt of Mint Gun Club sharing their knowledge, expertise and secrets of the trade with their teams to create the winning saloon.

Sampling The SMWS 28.42: “Zesty, Sherbety, Sweet & Sour” – Plus A Dash Of Oomph!

September 16, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

SMWS 28.42 “Zesty, sherbety, sweet and sour”

I’m now onto Number 3 of The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies’ cracking selection of recently released drams.

I’m trying one each month which is, as some might say, a tough job but someone has got to do it!

Well it’s not at all tough, it’s a dramming pleasure!

September’s dram-a-month, this month, is their members only SMWS 28.42 “Zesty, sherbety, sweet and sour”.

The 28.42 is a Highland dram and with a 60.5% alcohol level it has some punch to it!

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think?

Tasting Notes – SMWS 28.42 “Zesty, sherbety, sweet and sour” (60.5%)

A Highland Dram (Tullibardine Distillery) 21 years old, distilled on 7th. June 2007. Matured in a 1st. fill Ex-Bourbon barrel.

204 bottles released.
71 Left In Stock – BUT how many tomorrow?

Nose: Crisp, green apples with a sour zest. Fudge and caramel, balanced by hints of lemon peel. After a while there’s stewed fruits with a little wood.

Palate: Oily mouthfeel with syrupy fruits, vanilla, fudge and apples and oranges. “The alcohol is strong in this one!” and you might want to try a few drops of water!

Finish: Dry finish with some peppery spice but the sherbety sweetness is there till the end, together with a little salt. Adding water takes some of the Whoomph! out of it and releases more fruits and to be honest, more pepper so it’s quite a fiery finish at the end!

Overall: It’s a strong dram this one – anaesthetic for the mouth!
But it’s very tasty and, as usual, bags plenty of flavours.

Buy SMWS 28.42 “”Zesty, sherbety, sweet and sour”

About The SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other.

As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: “to provide our members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world’s widest collection of single cask whiskies.”

Conceptualised in the late 70’s and established in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, now 35 years old, has branches and partners bars in 19 countries globally. The Society has a selection of over 500 casks every year, each cask yielding a few hundred or less whisky bottles which are unique to that cask.

Rather than name their Whiskies after the distillery, the Society has a coding system. The Society also creates fantastic tasting notes summaries for their Whiskies and other bottles. The whiskies are straight from the cask single malt, undiluted, without chill-filtration or colouring at cask strength.

More recently the Society has been named Independent Bottler of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Independent Bottlers’ Challenge (IBC) competition.

Brora 40-Year-Old is a limited-edition Single Malt whisky bottled to commemorate two centuries in the lifetime of a distilling icon. Drawn from one dozen casks of vintage stocks from 1978, each of the 1,819 bottles, reflecting the year the distillery opened, offers a rare glimpse into a golden era of Brora’s past.

Encased in a deep burgundy velvet display case, the bottle is adorned with the Brora emblem of the Scottish Wild Cat – crest of the distillery’s founder, the Duke of Sutherland.

From 2020, Brora’s gates will open after some 36 years of quiet, following meticulous, brick-by-brick restoration currently underway to bring the legendary whisky house back to life. To welcome this new era and celebrate the past craftsmen that made Brora over its 200-year history, comes this new release 40-year-old expression. Diageo Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson has selected just twelve American oak hogshead casks from Brora’s vintage stocks to celebrate a moment of the distillery’s history: The Age of Peat.

In searching for the casks for this release, Dr Wilson worked alongside the Diageo Archive Team that had unearthed original Brora production records as part of their ongoing work to assist in the distillery restoration. This allowed the master blender to identify the years at which this now revered smoky style of Brora was at its peak, and following careful nosing of the individual casks, Dr Wilson made his selection: a 1978 40-year-old Single Malt of immense complexity that perfectly reflected this moment of Brora’s past.

“Of all the stories of Brora, there is one that seemed particularly fitting to tell on its 200th Anniversary. From 1969-83, there was a new experimentation phase in production and the Brora distillers created a smoky malt used heavily-peated Northern Highland barley. Used primarily in blends at the time, the few casks that are left from this Age of Peat, matured remarkably well and what remains is a multi-layered and complex Single Malt of astonishing quality. Little did the craftsmen at the time know, they had created a masterpiece. It is emblematic of the varied past of the distillery that makes it so special to all that know it: a humble story of experimentation, craft and happy coincidence.”

Jameson is on Tour!

Irish Distillers has announced that its award-winning Bow St. Experience is going on tour. From September 2019, the experience will activate in Lisbon, Portugal.

Hands-on experiences abound!

Jameson has created a replica of its flagship experience and shipped it to the Portuguese capital, bringing the home of the brand to new audiences.

Running throughout September at Lisbon’s creative urban district – LX Factory – visitors to the pop-up will experience the history, heritage, production process and taste of Jameson on the definitive tour, guided by Jameson’s world-renowned brand ambassadors.

In addition, the surrounding Jameson Village will offer a range of interactive, fun and engaging experiences and live entertainment; including bartender masterclasses, a tattoo studio and a barber shop for tourists and visitors to enjoy.

Your very own personalised Jameson Distillery Edition bottle is also available to buy

For years, we have welcomed Irish whiskey fans from around the world to our brand homes in Dublin and Cork to engage with our whiskeys through unique shared experiences. Now, we are incredibly excited to show Bow St, the spiritual home of Jameson, to the world. Innovation is central to everything we do at Irish Distillers, so we are thrilled to bring our home on tour using shipping containers to transport and house our Bow St. Experience around the globe.

Our aim is to bring our guests on a journey, engaging all five senses through audio visual story telling from a Jameson Brand Ambassador, aromas, hands-on experiences and, of course, product sampling.

This exciting project is part of Irish Distillers’ long-term brand experience plan. As a member of the Irish Whiskey Association, we’re working to make Ireland the world leader in whiskey tourism by 2030. Following on from the launch of Jameson Distillery On Tour this month, we hope to continue to bring the experience to life in other cities, reaching more audiences around the world.
– Simon Fay: Business Acceleration Director at Irish Distillers

Visitors to the pop-up will experience the history, heritage, production process and taste of Jameson

Each tour lasts 30 minutes with visitors given the opportunity to try a range of Jameson cocktails and beer pairings before or after the tour at The Jameson Bar.

Visitors will also be able to visit the Jameson store where they can find exclusive products and merchandise, including their own personalised Jameson Distillery Edition bottle, which until now, was only available at Jameson Distillery Bow St. in Dublin and Jameson Distillery Midleton in Cork.

In December 2018, Jameson Distillery Bow St. was named the World’s Leading Distillery Tour at the World Travel Awards. Jameson Distillery Bow St. was awarded Europe’s Leading Distillery Tour for the second year in a row at The World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony 2019, held in Madeira in June.

ABV: 46% Vol.

Introducing Highland Park Viking Tribe, an exceptional and unique single malt bottling at marrying strength of 46% ABV. Bottling at 46% ABV (compared to 40% or 43% as is normal) allows the whisky to be filtered at a higher ambient temperature. The result is intensified flavours of citrus fruits, sweet vanilla and peppery spices, balanced with Highland Park's characteristic aromatic smokiness.

The term 'marrying strength' refers to the marrying process, which gives this whisky valuable time to harmonise in the cask before being bottled. A deliberately slow and unhurried stage, long since abandoned by many distilleries, cask harmonisation remains one of the five keystones of Highland Park production. The selected casks are combined together with natural spring water to reduce the strength of this whisky to 46% ABV, before leaving the newly married spirit to rest in casks for at least a month. During that resting period, flavours from the different casks harmonise, gathering depth and consistency.

Deanston take pride in the innovation and inspiration that goes into every drop off their delicious whisky. This organic single malt is the perfect example of this.

Duly inspired by the Industrious Spirit of their founders, their senior blender finished this unique single malt for 2 years in organic Oloroso Sherry casks. But first they watched patiently, letting it mature peacefully at the heart of the historic distillery for 14 years.

The result is a golden dram that offers heady notes of honeyed oak & chocolate-covered toffee. Deliciously distinctive & rich with tradition, this organic-certified limited edition offers a sweetly lingering finish in every drop.

In that time, they have opened a Visitor’s Centre, added two warehouses, grown from seven to 21 employees and their GlenAllachie and MacNair’s whiskies are now recognised as outstanding malts, receiving numerous medals and awards across both ranges.

It’s now time for them to expand the GlenAllachie core range and showcase more of what their whisky has to offer. The Master Distiller, Billy Walker, has been working tirelessly on this new expression since day one; evaluating casks and refining recipes to create something special. We’re proud to present the jewel in their crown; the GlenAllachie 15 years old.

Scotch whisky has a rich array of stories, myths and legends.

However, what start as myths can become received wisdom, influencing our understanding and restricting our enjoyment. We have deployed blending to challenge assumptions, biases and prejudices concerning Scotch in this limited edition series we call Myths & Legends.

It may surprise some, but blending is as crucial to the creation of single malts as it is to blended whisky. Myths & Legends I highlights the extent to which individual casks are often unreliable authorities for the style of whisky made at a distillery; it is by blending casks together that a fuller picture of distillery character can emerge.

Two parcels of malt whisky from the same Northern Highland distillery tasted markedly different: the younger parcel was malty and citrusy, the older one much creamier with a ripe fruit character. Two distinct personalities but from the one distillery.

By combining these two parcels Compass Box have created a whisky full of fragrance with a more rounded complexity, one that provides a richer understanding of what this distillery can produce.

Scotch whisky has a rich array of stories, myths and legends.

Myths & Legends II blends together malt whiskies of different ages from a single Speyside distillery. They wish to show how process matters more than provenance when it comes to the flavours of single malts. In addition to the aromas of tropical fruits and butterscotch you will also discover subtle savoury notes and spiciness.

The distinctive profile has nothing to do with “Speyside”; process decisions made at the distillery, the effects of maturation, and our own choices regarding the balance of the final blend determine the whisky’s quality and character. Clues to a whisky’s flavour lie in the glass and not the distillery’s region.

Scotch whisky has a rich array of stories, myths and legends.

For Myths & Legends III we have taken some of the same parcels of malt whisky used in Myths & Legends II and added peated malt whiskies from a pair of celebrated island distilleries. Some would object to our actions on principle.

Famous single malts are always too precious for blending, they say; the sanctity of the category seems to take precedence over quality.

However, thanks to our parcels of well regarded malt whiskies, the tropical fruit and butterscotch notes of Myths & Legends II are now further enriched by a deep and enchantingly aromatic smoke profile.

Never blend the famous names? The breadth of generous and complex flavours found in Myths & Legends III dismantles such superstitious thinking.
