Bunnahabhain Launches & Sells Out Of New ‘Fèis Ìle Festival’ Editions!

May 29, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Bunnahabhain Feis Ile editions: Moine Amontillado Finish and 2002 Madeira Finish

Award-winning Bunnahabhain single malt whisky is proud to introduce two new limited-edition expressions to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the world-famous Feis Ile festival on Islay – the Moine Amontillado Finish and 2002 Madeira Finish.

2002 Madeira Finish

While physical celebrations are on hold due to social distancing guidelines, Bunnahabhain will debut the exceptional new expressions to whisky fans across the globe, with a special ‘Feis-at-Home’ virtual tasting to recreate the warm Islay festival atmosphere.

The first of the festival editions is the Bunnahabhain Moine Amontillado Finish, a 2010 peated single malt (56.9% ABV), matured in the iconic coastal warehouses on Bunnahabhain Bay, and finished in the finest Amontillado sherry hogshead casks. Limited to 1658 bottles, and inspired by the welcoming nature of Feis Ile, this warming dram dances with sweet, peppery flavour – recreating that inviting atmosphere of the Islay festival.

The amber gold whisky has unique notes of peppery peat, spicy oak and vanilla custard on the nose, with fresh espresso, dried apple and dusty cocoa on the palate, and a long peppery finish, packed with rick oak and roasted nuts.

The Bunnahabhain 2002 Madeira Finish is a non-peated single malt (53% ABV), matured for 18 years in Bunnahabhain’s shore-front warehouse and slumbering for its final three years in Madeira sherry hogshead casks. With only 1164 bottles available, this unique flavour was crafted for celebrating a unique occasion, which feels particularly appropriate now – and delivers a symphony of sweet, creamy flavour to taste.

The burnished copper single malt with its standout Madeira Finish has notes of sweet ripe figs and creamy berries on the nose, vanilla and caramelised fruit on the palate, and with a dry but warm finish, fading into a sweet lingering marmalade.

Our festival editions always bring the team’s talent and craft to the fore with something a bit different, and this year’s expressions are truly special.

We couldn’t have imagined that they would be released without a festival taking place this year. Though these limited-edition single malts pay homage to the magic of Feis Ile, so even if you can’t be there in person, now everyone can take a little slice of that home. Until we raise a dram with you again in person next year!
– Andrew Brown: Distillery Manager at Bunnahabhain

Moine Amontillado Finish

Bunnahabhain is Islay’s most remote distillery, overlooking a notorious passage of ocean known by seafarers as the sound of Islay. Bunnahabhain, which is Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’, goes against the grain – quite literally – from the other distilleries on the island – with a portfolio made up of broadly non-peated expressions.

These superior whiskies sold out in under 24 hours, marking the first ever ‘virtual’ Feis Ile. Bunnahabhain donated 10% of all product sales to The BEN – in aid of Scottish hospitality industry workers affected by Covid-19.

Bunnahabhain’s virtual ‘Feis at Home’ events will also take place on Friday the 29th of May:-
A virtual tasting and panel discussion of two new festival editions will take place at at 8pm (BST)
Live streams from the distillery on Islay will take place at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6.30pm (BST)

About Bunnahabhain:

Established in 1881 and situated on Islay’s most northerly point, Bunnahabhain is the island’s most remote distillery, overlooking a notorious passage of ocean known by seafarers as the sound of Islay. It has long established links to the sea, previously only accessible by boat – with ships loaded up daily before transporting their important whisky cargo back to the mainland for sale.

The word ‘Bunnahabhain’ is actually Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’ referring to the Margadale River, its source of pure spring water which is distilled in the island’s tallest stills to create the renowned malts. It’s the use of pure spring water that is piped to the distillery which gives it its unique light colouring which sets it apart from other darker liquids on the Islay landscape.

The distillery goes against the grain – quite literally – with a portfolio made up of broadly non-peated expressions, however, its peated Toiteach A Dhà expression recently won in the Scotch Islay: No Age Statement category at this year’s World Whiskies Awards. Bunnahabhain took home a further four titles in the 2020 awards ranging from silver to gold certificates – showcasing the calibre of its range.

Irish Distillers Named ‘Importer Of The Year’ 2020!

May 27, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Redbreast Whiskey was presented with coveted Gold medals!

Irish Distillers, makers of some of the world’s most enjoyed whiskeys, has been named Importer of the Year at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020.

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaleach

The accolade follows a stellar year for the world’s leading distiller of Irish whiskey, with brands across its portfolio achieving an outstanding 25 medals.

The Importer of the Year honour recognises the achievement of the distiller who attains the greatest number and level of medals. This year the award highlights Irish Distillers’ consistent commitment to producing whiskeys of outstanding quality to deliver exceptional experiences for discerning whiskey drinkers around the globe.

In addition to honouring Irish Distillers with one of its top awards, the judges of the annual tasting competition awarded its portfolio of Irish whiskeys with six Double Gold medals – including an exceptional performance from its celebrated and historic Spot range as Red Spot, Green Spot and Yellow Spot all collected a Double Gold medal.

Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength also received Double Gold, testament to the unrivalled quality and craftsmanship of the whiskeys produced at Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery in County Cork. Newcomer Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaleach Knockrath Forest was also highly commended, achieving a Double Gold medal on its first outing at the competition, reinforcing Midleton Very Rare’s standing as the pinnacle expression of Irish whiskey.

Midleton – Dair Ghaelach

The Redbreast portfolio continued its legacy as the world’s most decorated single pot still Irish whiskey as Redbreast 12, Redbreast 15, Redbreast 21 and Redbreast Lustau Edition were presented with coveted Gold medals. The bold and distinctive taste of the Powers range was also recognised, with the judges awarding Powers John’s Lane, Powers Three Swallow and Powers Gold Label with Gold Medals.

The accolades follow a dynamic new bottle design for Powers, announced earlier this year, as part of a bid to attract a new generation of drinkers to one of Ireland’s most loved whiskey brands.

Irish Distillers’ intrepid step into the modern premium gin market was also rewarded, with its METHOD AND MADNESS Irish Micro Distilled Gin taking home a Gold medal after being unveiled last year as the first release from Irish Distillers’ new Micro Distillery in Midleton.

The award acknowledges the commitment to experimentation and innovation within the METHOD AND MADNESS range, which continues to push the boundaries and re-write the future of modern Irish spirits.

We are delighted to have received such a fantastic range of honours from one of the world’s leading tasting competitions, and one of the ultimate accolades for any distiller to win – Importer of the Year.

We are incredibly proud that our whiskeys continue to impress both whiskey experts and connoisseurs around the world. These awards are a true testament of the passion, creativity and commitment of the world-class production team who make Midleton Distillery a special place to work.
– Tommy Keane: Production Director at Irish Distillers

The Whisky Show’s New ‘Normal’ Introduces A Virtual Segment!

May 20, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

A virtual “Cheers!”

The 12th year of the renowned The Whisky Show, taking place in London October 2nd. – 4th., will see an exciting development with the introduction of a virtual segment!

Following the success of April’s Virtual Cognac Weekend, The Whisky Exchange are pleased to announce Whisky Show 2020 will be open for virtual attendance around the globe.

While the team still plan to go ahead with the physical The Whisky Show at Old Billingsgate in central London, the Virtual Whisky Show will allow whisky lovers from all over the world to be there in spirit with a line-up of incredible experiences for all fans, old and new of the water of life. The live stream will include stage demos, VIP talks with industry heavyweights and even exclusive tastings, with attendees being sent their own bespoke tasting packs, ensuring whisky fans everywhere can still taste along with the experts.

I am really excited to be going digital this year and adding another dimension to our show. Over the past few months we have seen how successful virtual tastings are, especially after the success of taking Cognac show online with over 70,000 views across the weekend.

We recognise that many of our customers may not be able to attend show this year due to the current situation. However we wanted them to still be a part of the show and the obvious way was to hit the internet. Not only will doing this allow us to reach our current audience but it will also allow us to take The Whisky Show to a whole other level
– Dawn Davies MW: Show Organiser

With Whisky Show set to take place later in the year, The Whisky Exchange will be taking all government guidelines surrounding COVID-19 with the utmost seriousness, ensuring preventative measures will be in force throughout the weekend.

The 12th year of The Whisky Show sees some changes, but we are certainly sure this will become one of the most memorable years yet!

Glasgow Distillery Launches “Glasgow 1770 Single Malt- Triple Distilled Release No.1”!

May 20, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Triple Distilled – Release No.1

Glasgow Distillery has today unveiled the third and final expression to complete its Signature Range with Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Triple Distilled – Release No.1.

Triple Distilled Release No.1 is a limited-edition whisky bottled at 46% ABV

Triple Distilled Release No.1 follows the launch of the Glasgow 1770 Peated expression in 2019, and the distillery’s inaugrual launch of Glasgow 1770 Original in 2018 which was an instant sell out success. Since then, the range has picked up an ever growing number of international whisky awards, including Gold Medals at The San Franciso World Spirits Competition; International Spirits Challenge, and Scotch Whisky Masters.

This eagerly anticipated release is the third and final iteration in the core range from the Distillery, before embarking on an exciting selection of single cask and limited edition releases which are currently in the pipeline.

Harnessing the incredibly pure water of Loch Katrine, the distillery’s natural water source, with a third distillation and maturation exclusively in virgin oak casks, the resulting spirit is a smooth single malt whisky with deep complexity, character and warmth.
On the nose aromas of rich sweet butterscotch toffee and dark cherries leads to hints of ripe pear and baked vanilla cheesecake on the palate, followed by spicy chocolate. The finish is long and clean, with lingering notes of rich honey and vanilla.

We are thrilled to celebrate the launch of our first Triple Distilled whisky. It has been a project of passion for everyone at the distillery and is truly a celebration of two of the essential elements in the whisky making process: the water and the wood.

We’re incredibly fortunate that our natural water supply is from Loch Katrine, it gives such softness and purity to our whisky. We also have access to virgin oak casks of outstanding quality and have used these for the entire duration of this whisky’s maturation.

The additional complexity and depth that this adds is exceptional and the marriage of these two elements, the water and the wood, is really apparent in this exciting new release which we are proud to add to the Glasgow 1770 Signature Range.

It has always been our vision to create a core range of single malts that reflect differing production styles. Our vision was influenced by the original Glasgow Distillery, which was founded in 1770 and inspired the name for our range of single malts. After discovering that they produced unpeated, peated and triple distilled whisky some 150 years ago we set out to do the same for the modern whisky era.
– Liam Hughes: Co-Founder of The Glasgow Distillery Company

Non-chill filtered and natural in colour, Glasgow 1770 – Triple Distilled Release No.1 is a limited-edition whisky bottled at 46% ABV and is now available to purchase from the Glasgow Distillery website for £49.

BOTTLING SERIE: Fugaku Sanjurokkei – 10th Release.

DISTILLED: 1999-2000

BOTTLED: 2017

ABV: 60.9% Vol.

"Fugaku Sanjurokkei" is a series of landscape prints by the prominent Japanese ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) artist Hokusai. The term literally means "36 Views of Mount Fuji", for which Hokusai depicts Mount Fuji from different locations in various weather conditions. Karuizawa has adopted the theme and introduced Fugaku Sanjurokkei Series, exhibiting one of the 36 striking prints in each release. These releases are drawn from casks of 1999 and 2000 vintages and bottled at cask strength.

Karuizawa distillery sat in the foothills of Mount Asama, where the chilly climate provided an excellent condition for the production of whisky. Though small, this distillery was known for producing whisky of the finest quality. The distillery was closed in 2011 and hence has made the Karuizawa whiskies extremely rare and valuable.

The 1999-2000 cask strength series comes from the final years of the distilleries production. This one is one of the latest releases in 2016 and marks the 8th edition of this series. This edition presents the "Yoshida on the Tokaido Highway". Living in the age of Edo, every day can be Sunday. The life is so free that they can have an up-and-go travel whenever they want to. The painting shows a tea room located on the Tōkaidō, where travelers can take a rest and enjoy the beautiful view of Mt. Fuji.

Redbreast Dream Cask – Ruby Port Limited Edition – Released To Celebrate World Whisky Day 2020!

May 16, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Redbreast Dream Cask Ruby Port Edition

Today, Redbreast Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Cork, announced the release of its third limited edition Dream Cask to mark World Whisky Day!

Redbreast Dream Cask Ruby Port Edition will be available exclusively through an online ballot

Inspired by the flavours of the Iberian Peninsula, Redbreast Dream Cask Ruby Port Edition is the first Redbreast expression to be fully finished in a single port cask, taking whiskey drinkers on a journey from the home of Irish whiskey to Portugal’s wine region.

The inspiration for the 28-year-old Dream Cask began during trials for Redbreast 27 Year Old – the oldest permanent expression in the Redbreast family.

During this time, the Midleton Masters discovered a liquid worthy of the Dream Cask name which uniquely comprises both a ruby port cask component and finish.

Created by Master Blender Billy Leighton, in collaboration with Blender Dave McCabe, Redbreast Dream Cask Ruby Port Edition is the culmination of four extraordinary whiskey journeys dating back more than 30 years, which were set aside during the crafting of Redbreast 27 Year Old.

Aged for a minimum of 28 years in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels, an oloroso sherry butt and a ruby port seasoned cask, these exceptional liquids were then married in the ruby port cask to mature further as a single Dream Cask.

The result is a smooth and silky Irish whiskey with notes of assertive spices, dark chocolate and cinnamon which slowly reveal a luxurious layer of sweet ripe plums and exotic fruits reminiscent of the signature Redbreast style.

Bottled at 51.5%, the ruby port cask finish further contributes notes of raisins, sultanas and berries, adding an extra layer of depth and complexity. It is this final marrying phase which also gives the expression an intense mahogany colour.

It’s more than three decades since my predecessors went to the Douro Valley and hand selected the cask which would become Redbreast Dream Cask 2020. I’m delighted to be able to share its creation with whiskey lovers around the world.

Our third Dream Cask was created with a very significant fortified wine component. This imparts a unique balance of flavours, with less vanilla sweetness and more fleshy fruits that are associated with port.
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender

Because a Dream Cask is not constrained by volume, we have great licence to select a unique expression with a bold flavour which couldn’t be replicated in a permanent offering.

Thankfully, Billy and I were in absolute agreement that this was the right time to release this year’s Dream Cask.
– Dave McCabe: Blender

Redbreast Dream Cask Ruby Port Edition will be available exclusively through an online ballot hosted on Redbreast’s private members’ club, The Birdhouse.

The ballot will be live from 15:00 (GMT+1) on Monday, May 25th until 14:59 (GMT +1) on June 2nd when successful participants will be given an opportunity to purchase a 500ml bottle for €490.

Tasting notes

Nose: Initially abundant with herbs and spices, some lighter notes of rosemary and garden mint combining with cedar and red peppers. Some zesty citrus notes develop into a rich compote of ripe fleshy fruit, melon, kiwi and black cherry on top of marcona almonds. The spicy sweetness of vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg acknowledge the contribution of the oak cask.

Taste: A very rich silky mouthful of assertive spices combined with sweet ripe plums. Dark chocolate and cinnamon notes slowly reveal a luxurious layer of ripe dark fruits which combine with raisins, sultanas and exotic fruits and berries which are typical of the Redbreast style.

Finish: The signature Redbreast mix of fruit and spice is slow to fade.

Additional production information:

Redbreast Dream Cask Ruby Port Edition represents four unique whiskeys which were aged for a minimum of 28 years and then vatted together and left to marry in the ruby port pipe cask. These include:

Cask 1- a single pot still Irish whiskey distilled in 1989, matured in an ex-bourbon barrel and re-casked into a ruby port cask in 1995.
Cask 2- a single pot still Irish whiskey distilled in 1991, matured in a second-fill ex-bourbon barrel.
Cask 3- a single pot still Irish whiskey distilled in 1991, matured in a second-fill ex-bourbon barrel.
Cask 4- a single pot still Irish whiskey distilled in 1991, matured in an ex-bourbon barrel and re-casked into a sherry butt in 2011.

Cotswolds Distillery Launches Cotswolds Amaro No.1 Whisky Liqueur!

May 15, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Cotswolds Amaro Whisky Liqueurs

Cotswolds Distillery is launching the first expression from the Amaro Whisky Liqueur Collection – Cotswolds Amaro No 1!

Available to purchase exclusively from The Cotswolds Distillery from the 16th May 2020

In celebration of World Whisky Day this Saturday 16th. May 2020, The Cotswolds Distillery is delighted to announce the release of the first expression from the new range of Cotswolds Amaro Whisky Liqueurs.

Inspired by Amaro, the Italian herbal liqueur which is typically enjoyed as an after-dinner ‘digestif’, Cotswolds Distillery has created a collection of whisky liqueurs which recreate this drinking moment, The Cotswolds Amaro Whisky Liqueurs.

The first expression, Cotswolds Amaro No 1, has the flagship Cotswolds Single Malt as the base to which a blend of select botanicals including vanilla, citrus and spice have been added. The resulting liqueur is lighter with pronounced herbal and floral notes. The second expression will be launched this Autumn.

I have always loved Amaro and wanted to create Cotswolds Distillery’s own Amaro liqueur.

Launching Cotswolds Amaro No 1 on World Whisky Day seemed the perfect way to celebrate this wonderful day. The vanilla, spice and citrus complement our Single Malt Whisky and we hope our delicious digestif will become a favourite after-dinner drink.
– Daniel Szor: Cotswolds Distillery Founder

Amaro (Italian for ‘bitter’) is traditionally produced by macerating herbs, roots, flowers, bark and citrus elements in either spirit or wine (or sometimes both), before being sweetened with caramel or sugar and has a typical alcohol content of 16%-40%. It is usually bitter-sweet and is sometimes syrupy with a thick mouthfeel.

The Cotswolds Amaro Liqueur has been bottled at 40% which ensures the spices and sweetness complement the flavour coming through from the fruity whiskies.

The Cotswolds Amaro should be served well-chilled or on the rocks as an after-dinner moment, perfect for the end of a summer’s evening.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Fresh peach with bitter black tea and subtle orange citrus fruit.

Palate: Thick and creamy with vanilla and bitter marmalade, floral with a hint of spiced honey.

Finish: Slightly bitter finish, with dried fruit and a touch of maple syrup.

Cotswolds Amaro No1
