The Dubliner Smoked Stout Irish Whiskey Released!

May 18, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Dubliner Smoked Stout Whiskey!

The Dubliner Irish Whiskey has launched The Dubliner Smoked Stout Whiskey, the first release from the brand’s latest limited-edition collection, The Dubliner Whiskey Beer Cask Edition Series, following a collaboration with one of Ireland’s leading craft brewers, Rascal’s Brewing Company.

The Dubliner Smoked Stout Edition is a whiskey packed with personality and flavour, bottled at 40% ABV. If freshly baked oat cookies, honeyed sweetness and fresh cinnamon spice, followed by big creamy maltiness and subtle toasty smokiness floats your boat, this is one whiskey you’re going to need in your life.

A limited edition with fewer than 2,000 bottles …

You’ll need to be quick though -The Dubliner Irish Whiskey Smoked Stout is a limited edition with fewer than 2,000 bottles on sale, available from thedld.com for €35

This latest collaboration saw the award-winning Dubliner Irish Whiskey share their ex-bourbon whiskey casks with fellow Dublin neighbour and independent Irish craft brewer, Rascal’s, with the brewers filling the casks with their high quality, unfiltered and unpasteurised beer.

Following bottling, the casks were returned to the Dubliner team, with each cask refilled with The Dubliner Irish Whiskey, allowing the flavours of the beer, having soaked into the casks, to seep into the three-year-old whiskey, creating a delicious blend that’s set to excite whiskey and beer fans alike.

We are excited to launch the Dubliner Smoked Stout Irish Whiskey in Ireland. This is the latest in our flavour work on the brand. Dubliner Irish Whiskey is committed to making whiskey accessible for anyone to try.

Big on flavour, it is sure to appeal to whiskey and beer drinkers alike.
– Bronagh Hunt: Global Brand Director, Irish Whiskeys at Quintessential Brands

There will be more releases from The Dubliner and Rascal’s in the coming months so keep your eyes peeled for more news soon – you’ll hear of the latest releases first by following The Dubliner Irish Whiskey on Instagram (@dublinerwhiskey)

Jura Whisky Unveils Distillery Cask “Fèis Ìle” Limited Edition 2021!

May 18, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Whisky Unveils Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021!

Jura Single Malt whisky has announced the launch of its Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021, which is set for release on the distillery’s official day of Fèis Ìle on 6th June. This special single cask release will, for the first time, support the vital annual Jura Music Festival!

Fully matured for 18 years in a single refill sherry butt from Jerez in Southern Spain, hand selected by Jura distillery manager Graham Logan, this unpeated Jura single malt delivers sweet aromas of candied almonds, toasted marshmallows and Scottish tablet. Intense flavours of rich chocolate orange, treacle and Demerara sugar come through on the palate with a sticky sweet-salted caramel to finish.

The single cask release is offered at a cask strength of 57.1% ABV and is non-chill filtered with no added colour. Distilled on 30th October 2002, only 300 bottles will be available for sale, each one filled and wax sealed by the distillery team – a testament to the passion and commitment of the tiny island community.

A donation of £25 from each bottle sold will help to honour Jura’s favourite island event of the year, the Jura Music Festival. Now in its 28th year, this year’s festival will take place online during the last weekend in September and will host traditional Scottish musicians and bands from around the country for a weekend packed full of music. The £25 donation is equivalent to the cost of a ticket to the main Saturday night event which is the highlight of the Festival for many.

Only 300 bottles will be available for sale …

Despite the challenges of the past year, we are delighted to be back for Fèis Ìle 2021 with a very special limited-edition release which gives back to our community and this vital annual event which we’ve proudly supported over the years.

When hand selecting this specific cask, I was looking for a whisky that was smooth, bright and lively, like the atmosphere on the island during the festival. This 18-Year-Old single cask bottling is a real treat for Jura fans. Our gulf stream-protected warehouses allow a longer maturation cycle and the sea spray and cask have given this whisky a long-lasting, salted caramel taste on the tongue.
– Graham Logan: Jura distillery Manager

At the designated Fèis Ìle day on 6th June celebrating Jura, Jura Whisky will be hosting a range of interactive virtual events which fans can join online. Two Instagram Lives hosted by Global Single Malt Specialist, Stephen Martin, will showcase the best of Jura, from Brunch Time cocktails with Kyle Jamieson of Edinburgh’s Nauticus Bar to the Jura pub lock-in with Andy Gemmell of The Gate in Glasgow.

Each bottle of Jura Whisky is said to be a celebration of the island home and embodies the passion of those who make it. This remote Scottish island provides the canvas from which these dedicated islanders take their inspiration, and the distillery provides the means to bring this to life through whisky making.

The Jura Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021 will be available to buy from jurawhisky.com on 6th June, 2021 – priced at £145.

May 17, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Redbreast Golden Cork!

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork, is offering whiskey lovers the chance to win a bottle of its eagerly anticipated fourth annual Dream Cask release – simply by finding one of six golden corks hidden among the latest release of its award-winning Redbreast 12 Year Old!

The fourth Redbreast Dream Cask release will be available exclusively through an online ballet

Available exclusively to UK consumers via the Master of Malt online shop, the competition represents a rare opportunity to secure one of the most sought-after limited edition expressions in the annual Irish whiskey calendar.

Now in its fourth year, the annual Redbreast Dream Cask release represents the fulfilment of a dream held by Master Blender, Billy Leighton, to share an annual release like no other, and features a small selection of the very finest whiskeys in Midleton’s exceptional inventory which are finished in one ‘dream’ cask to create an expression that is truly unique.

The 2021 edition was unveiled on Friday 14th May. Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition is a 29 year old single pot still Irish whiskey that celebrates the signature Redbreast style. Combining innovation, tradition and time-honoured craftsmanship by vatting together four special whiskeys, aged for a minimum of 29 years in ex-bourbon, sherry and ruby port seasoned casks, these whiskeys were married in a single outstanding oloroso sherry butt from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain’s Andalusia region.

They were then left to mature for a further 15 months to bring an evolution of its characteristic flavours to the Redbreast experience.

With an ABV of 51.2%, this rare bottling is luscious in flavour with notes of dark brown sugar, succulent berries and vanilla perfectly off-setting Redbreast’s trademark spices. Just 924 bottles are available at an RRP of €520.

Find one of six golden corks hidden among the latest release of Redbreast 12 Year Old!

Our annual Dream Cask release is an opportunity for whiskey lovers to savour something truly exceptional from our warehouse. All 816 bottles of our first Dream Cask release in 2018 – a hand-selected 32 Year Old single pot still Irish whiskey finished in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry-seasoned butt – sold out on the first day of release, at a rate of more than two bottles per minute.

Our 2019 release, which was created from a vatting of bourbon, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks which were re-casked and finished in a specially selected Pedro Ximénez cask, a first for Redbreast and Midleton Distillery, sold out even more quickly, at a rate of 65 bottles per minute. Due to this phenomenal demand, we have since sought to make this highly sought-after annual release as equitable as possible, introducing a new balloting system in 2020.
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender

Our new ‘golden cork’ campaign offers six lucky winners the chance to secure a bottle of the latest Redbreast Dream Cask. We’re delighted to partner with Master of Malt on this exclusive opportunity, and at the same time, the consolation for anyone who purchases a bottle of our Redbreast 12 Year Old, but isn’t lucky enough to find a golden cork, is that they still get to enjoy an outstanding and multi award-winning single pot still Irish whiskey.
– Ian Peart: Commercial Director at Pernod Ricard UK

The fourth Redbreast Dream Cask release will be available exclusively through an online ballet hosted through Redbreast’s online members’ club, The Birdhouse. The ballot will be live from 2pm on Monday 17th May until 2pm on Tuesday 25th May when successful participants will be able to purchase one €520, 500ml bottle.

Redbreast Releases New Dream Cask: Oloroso Sherry Edition!

May 14, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Redbreast Dream Cask 2021!

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers at its world-renowned Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork, has announced the fourth release in its exceptional Dream Cask collection to mark World Whisky Day 2021. Hand-selected by Master Blender Billy Leighton, Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition will be available in limited quantities exclusively via Redbreast’s private members’ club, The Birdhouse!

Launching for World Whisky Day, 924 bottles of Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition will be available exclusively through an online ballot hosted on The Birdhouse. The ballot will be live from 17th to 25th May when successful participants will be given an opportunity to purchase a 500ml bottle for €520.

Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition is a 29-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey

Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition is a 29-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey that celebrates the signature Redbreast style and represents the fulfilment of a dream held by Master Blender Billy Leighton to share an annual release like no other.

When selecting their whiskey of choice for this fourth release, Leighton and Blender Dave McCabe combined innovation, tradition and time-honoured craftsmanship by vatting together four special whiskeys, aged for a minimum of 29 years in ex-bourbon, sherry and ruby port seasoned casks. The whiskeys were married in a single outstanding Oloroso sherry butt from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain’s Andalusia region, and left to mature for a further 15 months to bring an evolution of its characteristic flavours to the Redbreast experience.

The extended finishing time of this magnificent Dream Cask enables the individual wood contributions to come together and take on a wide spectrum of mellow fruit flavours and pot still spices. The result is a luxuriously rich Irish whiskey with notes of dried fruits, herbs and toasted oak and a complex aroma of liquorice, leather and nutmeg reminiscent of Andalusian bodegas. With an ABV of 51.2%, this rare bottling is luscious in flavour with notes of dark brown sugar, succulent berries and vanilla perfectly off-setting Redbreast’s trademark spices.

There is no greater joy in my job than to come across an excellent cask while conducting a sensory assessment of our whiskeys. It is from four such outstanding casks that this year’s Redbreast Dream Cask was born. To craft the 2021 expression, we experimented with new ways of vatting, marrying and finishing to create something greater than the sum of its parts and we are delighted with the result.

Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition is undeniably special and yet unmistakably Redbreast and we are honoured to pass it on to our Birdhouse members.
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender

924 bottles of Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition will be available exclusively through an online ballot

The liquorice aromas from the Redbreast Dream Cask Oloroso Sherry Edition instantly transport us to the bodegas of Jerez, celebrating Redbreast’s relationship with the region for over three decades.

Sherry seasoned casks have been at the heart of Redbreast Irish Whiskey since its resurrection in 1991 and we are thrilled that this year’s Dream Cask could pay homage to that iconic relationship.
– Dave McCabe: Blender

Tasting notes

Aroma: A rich and complex array of aromas with liquorice, dried fruits and a freshly crushed garden mint character to the fore, while dark berries and delicate touches of orange marmalade build over time, working in tandem with the pronounced aromas of worn leather tobacco leaf and nutmeg. Cinnamon spice and sweet vanilla highlight the intricate nature of the oak, complimenting and enhancing the pot still spices.

Taste: Luscious and full, with succulent berry fruits, soft anise spice and mild tannins. The taste effortlessly evolves with notes of dark brown sugar, vanilla, and raisins adding a sweet element to create balance with the pot still spice, while cinnamon and nutmeg remain constant in the background.

Finish: Lingering finish with the spices slowly fading allowing the oak and fruit to have the final say.

Additional production information:

Funkin Reveals The World’s Favourite Cocktail – Margarita Takes the Crown!

May 13, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

What’s Your Favourite Cocktail?

Today is World Cocktail Day and Funkin Cocktails has researched each country’s favourite cocktail across the globe!

UK specific results

Using Google search data, they were able to determine which cocktails were the most searched for from 115 different countries – showing us which cocktail is any country’s refreshment of choice.

Favourite Cocktails per Worldwide Search Volume

We can also see the total worldwide search volume for each cocktail, giving us the ultimate cocktail league table, featuring over 80 cocktails.

Total Favourite Cocktails per Country

Using this data, we can see that:

The Margarita is the undisputed cocktail champion of the world: with 30 countries claiming it as their favourite and around 546,280 searches for them worldwide per month – the Marg’s are in charge.

The classics are classic for a reason: The Margarita, Mojito, Pornstar Martini and White Russian made up 80% of the total favourite cocktails for each country.

Popularity isn’t everything: While the Old Fashioned, Bloody Mary, Sex On The Beach & Manhattan cocktails all made the top 10 of the world’s most popular cocktails – no country had them as their outright favourite!

See the favourite cocktails for each country as an interactive map

Funkin Cocktails are The award-winning cocktail experts with more than 21 years in the making. Established in 1999 as a cocktail expert for high-end bars, Funkin soon became the #1 cocktail brand in the UK.

The favourite cocktails for each country

Funkin believes that to shake the best cocktail, you have to use the best ingredients. That’s why they use real fruit to create their products, famous amongst the best bartenders all around the world.

Popularity isn’t everything!

It’s fascinating to see the differences across the globe for which cocktails are the favourite around each country.

There definitely seems to be a theme in the most popular cocktails: refreshing with a hint of something tropical, to feel like you’re being whisked away to warmer climates with every sip.

While it had stiff competition, Margarita grabbing the top spot as the world’s favourite cocktail is no surprise to me, after all, it’s even got its own glass!

Biggar & Leith Launch The Gladstone Axe Whisky!

May 12, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Gladstone Axe Malt Whisky

Fine wine and spirits company, Biggar and Leith have launched an exciting new brand The Gladstone Axe Malt Whisky. Named after four-times Prime Minister, William Gladstone, the whisky is a modern twist on classic Scotch. There are two expressions in the range – The Gladstone Axe American Oak and The Gladstone Axe The Black Axe, both bottled in an iconic bottle which tells the story of William Gladstone in a contemporary way.

The whiskies have been carefully selected from the Highlands and Islay to create two easy-drinking smooth blends made up of 14 single malts. The whiskies were created in honour of William Gladstone by his great-great-great Grandson, Elwyn Gladstone, Founder of Biggar and Leith and Malfy Gin.

‘The Woodsman’

William Gladstone was Prime Minister during the reign of Queen Victoria and had a legendary collection of axes. His passion was for felling trees as a way of relaxing and exercising and people would come from around the country to watch him chopping trees.

The Gladstone Axe American Oak is aged and finished in American Oak Bourbon barrels and blended from whiskies from 14 different Highland and Islay single malt distilleries. The Black Axe has a higher proportion of Islay malts to add just a touch of smoky character.

We are really excited to be launching a new blended malt whisky bearing the name of my ancestor who was a great figurehead. In 1860, he signed the Spirts Act which allowed the blending of Scotch Whisky for the first time, essentially creating the Scotch Whisky industry as we know it today.

Our family origins are in Scotland and Gladstone had a love for the country. He said, “There is not a drop of blood in me that is not Scottish.” I am proud to be able to honour him with this exciting new modern classic whisky.
– Elwyn Gladstone: Founder of Biggar and Leith and Malfy Gin

Gladstone Axe Whisky – American Oak and The Black Axe

With growing interest in blended malt whiskies amongst younger consumers globally, The Gladstone Axe presents an exciting opportunity as an approachable, mixable malt blend for a new generation of whisky drinkers.

The bespoke bottles are designed in bright, contemporary colours and made of tinted glass – light blue for the American Oak and smoky grey for The Black Axe – with embossing on all sides. The embossing shows Gladstone felling a tree on the back of the bottle, the name of the whisky and the years of his premiership on the shoulder, thumb prints on each side of the bottle and his monogram on the base. The back label is axe-shaped and relates the whisky’s history. The hand-dipped wax caps cover real cork stoppers.

Sampling Seven Seals Whisky New ‘Zodiac’ Releases – Drams That Are Out Of This World!

May 11, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Seven Seals – challenging preconceptions about the maturation and categorisation of Single Malt Whisky!

Highfern.com now have available two new releases from Swiss distillery Seven Seals Whisky as part of their the new Zodiac line!

In the same way as the zodiac in astrology describes different traits of the human character with different virtues, likewise the new Zodiac line from Seven Seals features single malt whiskies which demonstrate particular qualities.

The first two releases are The Age of Scorpio and The Age of Aquarius. As per previous releases from Seven Seals, these whiskies have been produced by finishing Swiss Single Malt Whisky using Seven Seals innovative accelerated maturation process.

Developed by Dr Dolf Stockhausen this new patented technique for maturing whisky is efficient, quick, and environmentally friendly, without sacrificing quality, aroma or character and aims to challenge preconceptions about the maturation and categorisation of Single Malt Whisky.

For more on the Seven Seals method, please see this intro from Dr Dolf Stockhausen on youtube

Robert from Highfern has very kindly sent me some samples to try (Cheers Robert!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – ‘The Age Of Aquarius’ Single Malt Whisky (49.7%)

Limited edition in different batches of 365 bottles.

£69.00 per 500ml at 49.7%, presented in wooden gift boxes.

Palate: Sherried fruits, toffee, dark chocolate, hints of mint – a flavoursome combo!

Finish: Warming spice which grows more intense. This is coupled with faint traces of woodsmoke, charcoal and tobacco.

Overall: A dark beast that initially hides it’s light under a bushel – it builds into some fine flavours and leaves a lingering woodsmoke, charcoal and tobacco on the palate.

Very tasty indeed!

Nose: Rich, red wine, fruity blackcurrant accompanied by summer fruits and creamy vanilla. Wood aromas top it all off!

Palate: Very smooth and creamy with liquid toffee, blackcurrant and red wine.

Finish: The palate continues with some spice but it’s not too heavy. A little astringent at the end.

Overall: A very fine, fruity, dram that explodes on the tongue and doesn’t let up at all!

Two very different, fine drams that demonstrate a wide range of flavours – out of this World in fact – Oh, and very morish to boot!

Many thanks to highfern.com (@HighfernLtd) for sending me the samples!

World Whisky Day – Why Not Celebrate With A Cocktail On The 15th. May?!

May 6, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

WORLD WHISKY DAY: celebrate with a cocktail!

Celebrate World Whisky Day on the 15th May with one of Europe’s favourite blended whiskies J&B Rare. This approachable and accessible Scotch appeals to whisky connoisseurs and ‘new world’ drinkers alike!

The consistent high quality of the blend, which is light in colour with a smooth and elegant taste, makes it the perfect whisky to be enjoyed as a dram or for an at home cocktail this World Whisky Day.

J&B Rare Whisky is distilled, blended and bottled in Scotland. A blend of 42 malt and grain whiskies, the heart of J&B Rare is formed from the finest Speyside single malts: Knockando, Auchroisk, Strathmill and Glen Spey and is expertly blended to create an approachable, rich and complex flavour.

The round, fruity, unique and distinctive taste of the fine malt whiskies is delicately balanced by carefully chosen grain whiskies which gives J&B Rare its distinctive character.

A great cocktail to create is the J&B Rare Whisky Sour:

35ml J&B Rare,
10ml lemon juice,
10ml sugar syrup
3 dashes of Angostura Bitters

Add to an ice-filled cocktail shaker.
Shake and fine strain into a chilled coupe glass.
Garnish with maraschino cherries.

RRP: £22.50, ABV: 40%
