When they began a maturation trial in 2016, they hadn’t expected the whiskies to develop such deliciousness in so short a period of time. One-year-old malt spirit, made at a Speyside distillery famous for the robust character of its whiskies, was re-racked into first fill Oloroso-seasoned butts. Sampling them three years later, one particular cask – #2 – proved so compelling that they began to experiment.

A parcel of first fill Bourbon barrels containing whisky from the now closed Imperial Distillery had sat in their sample library for some years. Though delicious in its own right, as whisky-makers they couldn’t hit on the ideal match. The much younger malt whisky from the Oloroso-seasoned cask proved the ideal means to deepen the fruity and creamy profile of this rare parcel.

FLAVOUR PROFILE: Aromas of marmalade and chai tea spices, with hints of plum. Ripe golden dessert apples dominate the luscious palate, supported by an oaky richness. Flavours of toffee and cocoa powder are also conjured up.

Sampling The Luxco Xmas Whiskey Tweet Tasting – Designed To Get Chrimbo Off To A Tasty Start!

December 3, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Sampling The Luxco Xmas Whiskey Tweet Tasting

I was Ho! Ho! Honoured to be invited to a #LuxcoXmasWhiskey TweetTastings earlier this week which was hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire – all designed to get Chrimbo off to a tasty start!

The samples came from the Lux Row Distillers stable of drinks whose drive to innovate has quickly allowed them to become one of the top USA-based independent producers of alcohol beverage products across all categories.

The three whiskies sampled were:-

  • Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • Ezra Brooks Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • Ezra Brooks Straight Rye Whiskey

If you want to catch up on what all the tweet tasters had to say you can view their comments by searching for the hash tag #LuxcoXmasWhiskey on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight Bourbon (46.5%)

Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a delicate fusion of flavours from seventh-generation distillers, this straight bourbon features a handpicked blend of 4- and 7-year-old bourbons, for an exclusive small-batch whiskey that honours its deep family origins.

Yellowstone Bourbon is crafted at Limestone Branch distillery, Kentucky which has been around since the start of the Kentucky bourbon business.

Nose: Gorgeous, sweet, stewed fruits with toffee. Then a real blast of tropical fruitiness shows itself plus a little chocolate.

Palate: Lovely sweetness and satisfying mouthfeel. Superb tropical fruits with mango coming out on top!

Finish: Some orange and chocolate, warming and spicy and slightly medicinal with a dry tannin finish. Interestingly, adding some water adds some Ginger flavours …

Overall: A great Bourbon with a little bit of everything. Fruity, sweet and with a powerful spice and dry finish!

Yellowstone Select:

Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Distillery: Limestone Branch
ABV: 46.5%
Available from Ocado for £45 – Save £7, was £52.00

Tasting Notes – Ezra Brooks Kentucky Straight Bourbon (40%)

Ezra Brooks is distilled using only the finest ingredients (corn, rye, barley) and charcoal filtered for an unmistakable, mellow flavor.

Aged in charred white oak barrels it delivers a beautifully smooth flavor and finish and is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV)

Nose: Citrusy with lemons ‘afore! Reminds me of boiled sweets (spangles) plus some healthy apples thrown in. After a while I’m getting some sweet tropicalness and creamy vanilla.

Palate: Cane sweetness, buttery, with lots of juicy tropical fruits – Very Yummy!

Finish: A thinner mouthfeel, but very light with sweet vanilla and fruity flavours dancing on the tongue! Oaky and light honeyed at the end with a mild spiciness.

Overall: A cracking Bourbon and at a very tasty price!

Ezra Brooks Bourbon 80 Proof:

Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Distillery: Lux Row Distillers
ABV: 40%
Available from Ocado for £26 – Save £3, was £29.00

Tasting Notes – Ezra Brooks Straight Rye Whiskey (45%)

A genuine straight rye whiskey made from the finest ingredients available and bottled at an honest 90 proof.

INGREDIENTS
Rye and barley

AWARDS
Gold Medal – 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition
Gold Medal – 2017 Global Masters Spirits Competition

Nose: Slow burner this one – maybe hiding it’s light under a Kentucky bushel! Eventually there is mint, treacle and licorice – who would have thought?! A little toffee, a little oak, a little spice …

Palate: Some creamy chocolate and licorice, treacle and shades of mint!

Finish: Toffee on rye coupled with some great spice that’s not too heavy.

Overall: Some interesting flavours here for sure – but all in a good way!

Ezra Brooks Rye 90 Proof:

Kentucky Straight Rye
Distillery: Lux Row Distillers
ABV: 45%

Available from MasterOfMalt for £30.70

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the 3, I think it’s got to be the Ezra Brooks Bourbon with Yellowstone Select & Ezra Brooks Rye tying for second as I can’t decide between them! I chose ‘Ezra Brooks Bourbon’ as it’s seriously good for the price – buy two …….. and keep them both for yourself!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire / @TweetTastings) for a great evening and (@ChapmanPoolePR) for sending the samples.

And, of course, many thanks to luxrowdistillers.com, without whom!

This Year’s Winner Of The Whisky Exchange’s “Whisky Of The Year 2022” Is …..

December 1, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

This year’s winner of The Whisky Exchange’s annual tasting, Whisky of the Year 2022 is …..

Deanston 18 Year Old!

Deanston 18 Year Old (£11 OFF! Now £63.95) has triumphed in The Whisky Exchange’s annual tasting, taking the top spot in the only official blind whisky judging undertaken by members of the public!

Deanston, a Highland distillery housed in an old cotton mill on the banks of the River Teith, claimed the crown in the 8th annual Whisky of the Year blind tasting hosted by specialist spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange. Their 18-year-old expression is a delicious fruity, sweet single malt that has been matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, cranking the distillery’s distinctive honeyed, fruity character up to eleven.

Deanston 18 Year Old

This year’s shortlist included whiskies from the highlands and the islands, bold sherry bombs, creamy bourbon barrel single malts and a chocolatey Welsh whisky. After much deliberation whisky-loving consumers were encouraged to critique each whisky for nose, palate and finish, and select a first and second choice via a voting form.

All whiskies in the tasting were under £75 retail price, and all ongoing, commercially available releases. In addition to Deanston 18 Year Old, the shortlist featured:

Glen Moray 18 (runner up)

Oban 2006 Distillers Edition
Penderyn
Mortlach 16 Year Old
Old Pulteney 15 Year Old

Deanston is not your typical distillery and Deanston 18 is not your average dram. Matured for 18 years in American white oak, ex-bourbon barrels, the end result is a dram that is smooth and aromatic, typical of our Deanston distillery style: soft, sweet, honeyed and uniquely waxy in flavour & mouthfeel. This is Deanston in a bottle.

We are truly honoured to have impressed the blind taste panel, and titles don’t get much bigger than whisky of the year.
– Brendan McCarron: Master Distiller at Distell

I am super excited to see Deanston win this year. It is a really underrated distillery that is producing some great tasting whisky at the moment.
– Dawn Davies: Head buyer at The Whisky Exchange

Deanston distillery is housed in an old cotton mill on the banks of the River Teith

LET’S NOT FORGET RUM AND GIN!

The Whisky Exchange has also recognised other exceptional bottles, a rum and a gin, nominated by industry experts and staff.

Gin of the Year 2022 : Height of Arrows Gin: juniper takes centre stage in this minimalist gin from Holyrood Distillery in Edinburgh. The sole botanical is distilled with salt and beeswax for a full-bodied spirit with great depth and complexity. An exciting direction for gin.

Rum of the Year 2022 : Doorly’s 14 Year Old Rum : a vividly fruity Barbadian rum from Richard Seale’s Foursquare Distillery, Doorly’s 14 Year Old is made using molasses from sugar cane grown on the island and is distilled in a combination of pot and column stills. It has rich notes of golden sultanas, dried figs, mango, rich oak spice and the fruity, high-ester funkiness that is characteristic of Foursquare.

Irish Distillers Announce Major Redevelopment Of Their Distillery Experience & Visitor Attraction!

November 30, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Midleton Distillery will be transformed into a world-class, multi-sensory whiskey experience!

The ambitious redevelopment plan will deliver new whiskey tours and experiences as well as new shopping, bar, café and restaurant facilities.

Once completed, Midleton Distillery will be transformed into a world-class, multi-sensory whiskey experience destination with the potential to attract over 200,000 visitors annually.

Construction on the new experience will begin immediately and is expected to be completed by 2025 which is the 200-year anniversary of Midleton Distillery.

The redevelopment will feature a heat recovery system, meaning that excess energy from the production of world-renowned Irish whiskeys onsite at Midleton Distillery will be used to heat the buildings.

Guided tours and experiences will continue during the redevelopment.

Irish Distillers has announced details of a €13 million investment plan which will see the redevelopment of its distillery experience at Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, transforming the attraction into a world-class whiskey destination!

Midleton Distillery is the beating heart of Irish whiskey and home to some of the world’s most well-known and successful Irish whiskeys, including Jameson, Powers, Redbreast, Midleton Very Rare, the Spot family and Method and Madness, as well as the Irish Whiskey Academy, Irish Distillers’ Archive and the Micro Distillery.

Guided tours and experiences will continue during the redevelopment

As part of the plan, the existing attraction will be completely transformed to accommodate new and interactive whiskey tours and various tasting experiences, offering visitors the opportunity to explore more about the past, present and future of Irish whiskey production at Midleton Distillery. The redevelopment will also deliver state-of-the-art new shopping, bar, café and restaurant facilities.

In order to ensure that visitors receive the same great experience while construction is ongoing, an alternative purpose-built Irish whiskey attraction will continue to welcome visitors during the redevelopment. Construction will commence immediately and is expected be completed by 2025, in time to mark the 200-year anniversary of Midleton Distillery.

Over the past 30 years, Midleton Distillery has become synonymous with Irish whiskey tourism, welcoming more than three million visitors from countries all over the world to our home in East Cork. At Irish Distillers, we are always looking towards the future of Irish whiskey, which is why we are delighted to announce our plans for the redevelopment of the distillery experience at Midleton. Our ambition is to deliver an exceptional, world-class experiential offering which will bring whiskey lovers closer to the production process than ever before.

These exciting plans will ensure that the distillery experience offers visitors a unique insight into the whiskeys produced at Midleton Distillery in exceptionally beautiful and engaging surroundings. We are confident that we can further build upon the appeal of Midleton Distillery for both domestic and international visitors, cementing its position as one of the top tourism attractions in Ireland while supporting jobs and economic growth in the East Cork region.

As we are committed to preserving and maintaining the beauty of the original distillery buildings, many of which date back to 1794, our redevelopment plan is centred around the conservation and restoration of existing structures, while transforming our visitor attraction to accommodate new and interactive whiskey tours and exciting tasting experiences.

The redevelopment will therefore marry the old and the new, making improvements and upgrades to preserve the fabric of these buildings, all of which will ultimately contribute to an immersive and unique visitor experience.
– Conor McQuaid: Chairman and CEO

The ambitious redevelopment plan will deliver new whiskey tours and experiences as well as new shopping, bar, café and restaurant facilities

Every element of the redevelopment has been planned with sustainability and efficiency in mind. The new visitor experience will feature a specially designed heat recovery system, meaning that excess energy from the production of world-renowned Irish whiskeys onsite in Midleton will be used to heat the buildings.

The introduction of the heat recovery system is predicted to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 200,000 KGs of CO2 per year, in line with Irish Distillers’ sustainability goals. Additionally, the switch to LED lighting throughout– close to 1,000 bulbs – will ensure a reduction in electricity consumption of +90 percent compared to existing usage.

New York headquartered Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA), who have specialist experience in the planning and design of cultural attractions around the world, will lead the design of the redevelopment project.

PJ Hegarty & Sons are delighted to be appointed as contractor to undertake this prestigious project on behalf of Irish Distillers and we look forward to working closely with the team in Midleton to deliver their vision.

Fettercairn Distillery Unveils New Sculpture To Watch Over Their Sustainable Forest!

November 19, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

‘FOREST FLOW’

NEW LAND SCULPTURE MARKS REPLANTING OF ANCIENT SCOTTISH FOREST

‘FOREST FLOW’ expresses a bold and responsible future for enlightened whisky making

A flowing and shimmering new sculpture representing life, growth and transformation has emerged in the rolling foothills of the Cairngorms as Scottish land artist Rob Mulholland unveiled his latest creation at Fettercairn Distillery.

Created from 800 metres of 12mm round recycled stainless steel bars – 3,200 individual pieces in total, the inspiration behind the piece – FOREST FLOW – is a ground-breaking project 10 years in the making that has seen tens of thousands of oak saplings planted on the land next to the Fettercairn Distillery on the 8,500-acre Fasque Estate. This future focused project will establish a new land management vision for the next 200 years and challenge whisky making convention by providing responsibly sourced and managed local wood to mature whisky in – ultimately enabling Fettercairn distillery to craft single estate whiskies.

“We love the idea that Rob’s stunning work will keep watch over the mighty oaks in our sustainable forest 150 -200 years from now”

Set on a clear pool of pure spring water from a natural source only a few hundred yards away, ‘FOREST FLOW’ draws its inspiration from the endless cycle of growth as saplings draw water and nutrients from the ground and circulate them to create vibrant life. Looking out to the new Forest – highlighting the deep and inextricable relationship we all have with nature – this bespoke piece of art has been created to fully harmonise with its environment through the depiction of essential whisky making ingredients – water, locally grown barley and the wood for maturation. The sculpture also celebrates the unique water-cooling ring on the stills at Fettercairn, allowing only the finest vapours to rise creating the purest spirit.

Fettercairn Distillery is embedded in the landscape. It draws its raw materials from its natural surroundings – the water, barley and the future oak forest – which are all within sight of the distillery. I wanted to capture all these elements in my sculpture. I was inspired after seeing the water flowing into the distillery from the nearby well, filling the mash tuns and pouring over the outside of the stills – a constant sense of movement and life as the water is circulated over the stills and then naturally cooled and re-circulated.

This is the same water that sustains the newly planted Fettercairn forest and nourishes the surrounding landscape, a visceral connection between the land and the distillery. I wanted to capture this life-giving flow in my sculpture and convey the close relationship that the whole whisky process has with the natural environment. I imagined the water flowing over the still, instantly solidifying into metal to create an organic sculptural form as it emerges from a pool of crystal clear water, as if some unseen alchemical process had transformed the flowing water into solid steel. On the outer edges a scattering of oak leaves form in a circle symbolising the newly planted Fettercairn forest.

The reflective clear pool captures the mirror image of the sculpture and simultaneously captures the reflection of the sky and changing light as time passes by. Time is a key element in creating whisky and in creating sculpture, a synergy of craft that permeates both practices. I hope that my work conveys both crafts and harnesses our respect for the setting and natural environment at Fettercairn
– Rob Mulholland: Glaswegian sculptor

The sculpture is due to be incorporated into the Distillery visitor experience from 2022

We love the idea that Rob’s stunning work will keep watch over the mighty oaks in our sustainable forest 150 -200 years from now. We are extremely proud when we look at Rob’s artistic endeavours – the sculpture has movement, texture and its shadows and reflections are constantly changing. It feels totally in keeping with its environment and for our whisky making philosophy.

We are confident it will become iconic on our regional landscape – loved by visitors and the local community alike.
– Stewart Walker: Distillery Manager at Fettercairn

The Fettercairn Forest project is led by whisky maker Gregg Glass, who has conducted numerous trials with wind-felled and responsibly sourced Scottish oak as well as extensive tests and experimentation in collaboration with experts across different industries.

The Distillery has already laid down whiskies in different types of Scottish Oak cask and plans to release the first commercially available Fettercairn Scottish Oak bottling next year. The sculpture is due to be incorporated into the Distillery visitor experience from 2022.

About Fettercairn

Our founder, Sir Alexander Ramsay, was one of the Scottish landowners who campaigned for the licensing of Scotch Whisky distilling. In 1824 Fettercairn he established the Fettercairn Distillery, in the Northeast of Scotland; it was to become one of the first licensed single malt distilleries. Despite his campaigns for regulation, Ramsay recruited illicit whisky makers as his first stillmen, knowing only they had the knowledge and experience required to make great whisky. From our very beginnings, we’ve been doing things a little differently in the pursuit of great whisky.

In the mid-1950s, the whisky makers at Fettercairn experimented, seeking ways to create a purer expression of their spirit. They found that pouring water down the still cooled the copper, increasing condensation inside so only the lightest vapours could rise for collection. They fashioned a copper tube around the top of the still to continually douse it with crystal clear mountain water. This simple yet ingenious engineering feat not only creates a purer expression of our whisky, but beautiful oxidized patina of the copper with shades of teal, brushed cooper and white proudly marking our stills. To this day our copper cooling ring remains unique in Scotch whisky making.

Today the Fettercairn Distillery continues this trend of ingenious thinking and is the home of enlightened whisky making, where experimental and considered, open minded innovation provides inspiration in the creation of the most exceptional and rare single malt whiskies. Driven by the idea of entire craft, there is an inherent commitment to the land and the idea of nurturing and embracing every single part of the process, from forest to field to Fettercairn.

As part of this philosophy, we are always discovering and learning and we use this to feed our imagination and passion to create distinct whiskies with a surprising tropical character.

About Rob Mulholland

Rob Mulholland is a sculptor and environmental artist based in Drymen, Scotland who exhibits throughout the U.K and world-wide. His practise explores the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Utilizing a wide variety of forms and materials his sculpture installations interact with their surroundings. He incorporates mirrored surfaces in his sculptures to reflect the given environment and alter the viewer’s perception of the space. The reflection is purposely distorted, inviting the viewer to question their individual relationship with their surroundings.

This nexus between people and the natural world is further developed in recent works such as One Flock which illuminates this symbiotic relationship. He is interested in elements of deconstruction and has interpreted this with sculptures such as Skytower and Evolve in which kinetic forces appear to have torn through and re-shaped the sculptural forms. These sculptures push the boundaries of physical structural engineering allowing him to explore and develop his practise further. His work is both gallery based and sited in public spaces.

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach “Kylebeg Wood” Released Today!

November 19, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach collection – “Kylebeg Wood”

Irish Distillers has introduced the fourth release in the Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach collection – “Kylebeg Wood”, a remarkable addition that can arguably boast the series’ most significant support of the conservation of oak woodlands yet, as well as adding another important chapter for the pinnacle of Irish whiskey!

For the fourth instalment of the Dair Ghaelach series, which translates simply as ‘Irish oak’, Midleton’s Masters worked with the guardians of Kylebeg Wood on the Ballykilcavan Estate near Stradbally, Co. Laois, to carefully select the seven trees that would be used to create the finest virgin Irish oak hogsheads in which to mature some of their most exquisite whiskeys.

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach Kylebeg Wood is available globally now!

Further reinforcing Midleton’s provenance and standing as a true taste of Ireland, the result is a liquid imbued with the unique fingerprint of Kylebeg Wood and a spellbinding new take on the Dair Ghaelach series.

With each bottling traceable to a single tree, Midleton Very Rare Kylebeg Wood offers a range of seven whiskeys bottled at cask strengths ranging from 55.4%-56.1% ABV, all with the hallmark inspiration of fragrant woodland spices and a heightened intensity of rich wood tannins that allow the influence of the Irish oak to linger on the palate until the very end.

Irish Distillers’ partnership with Kylebeg Wood is the ultimate example of how we are collaborating with Ireland’s forestry custodians to marry sustainable Irish oak with the highest standards in forestry practice and conservation, with some of the finest craftsmanship to be found anywhere in the world of whiskey.

Once harvested from Kylebeg Wood, the resulting oak logs were separately packed and shipped to the Spanish region of Galicia and the Maderbar Sawmills in Barralla where, for more than fifty years, the same family has been working with wood. Here the oak was cut, using the time-honoured craft of quarter sawing before the resulting stave wood made the ten-hour journey from the sawmills to the Antonio Paez Lobato cooperage in Jerez, where they were laid out to dry naturally in the warmth of the Spanish sun.

It took fifteen more months before these oak staves were ready to create 42 of the most special casks to be found anywhere in the world, each was then given a light toast to my own specifications before returning from Spain to be filled with a specially selected range of our finest Single Pot Still whiskeys, previously matured in American oak barrels for between thirteen to twenty-five years.
– Kevin O’Gorman: Master Distiller

Nosed and tasted every month for a further fifteen months, Kevin O’Gorman, Master Blender Billy Leighton, and Blender David McCabe kept a vigilant watch on the barrels before the resulting liquid was deemed to have struck a perfect balance with Midleton’s hallmark Single Pot Still character.

Seven whiskeys bottled at cask strengths ranging from 55.4%-56.1% ABV, all boasting fragrant woodland spices and rich woody notes!

The first Single Pot Still Irish whiskey to be matured in Irish oak from County Laois, Midleton Very Rare Kylebeg Wood is as individual as it is irresistible, and a whiskey that is as satisfyingly Irish as it is undeniably elegant.
– Kevin

Part of a carefully curated felling programme, the space created through the felling of the trees used to create Midleton Very Rare Kylebeg Wood hogsheads has allowed light to once again meet the forest floor. Now a new generation of saplings, planted following the felling, rise to take their place in the canopy above.

This method of forest management, that is practiced in Kylebeg Wood has contributed to the reappearance of the pine marten to the Laois countryside. This in turn has impacted the alien grey squirrel and helped the native red squirrel, which had practically vanished from the local area.

Situated amidst rolling fields of barley, the native Irish woodland on the Ballykilcavan Estate has been managed carefully and in tune with nature by the Walsh-Kemmis family for thirteen generations since 1639,

Kylebeg Wood – or ‘An Choill Bheag’ in the Irish language – translates as ‘the little wood’, and it was in this little wood that native Irish oak was planted in 1820 to replace trees that were felled for shipbuilding during the Napoleonic Wars.

Today, through an Irish Distillers sponsored monitoring system we use a ‘close to nature’ forest management system in line with international best practice (as assessed using the AFI Protocol*) ensuring sustainable management of our majestic Irish oak.
– Paddy Purser: forest manager and consultant, who worked closely with the Midleton team on the project

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach Kylebeg Wood is available globally now, RRP: €310 per 70cl

Midleton Very Rare Dair Ghaelach Kylebeg Wood Tasting Notes

Nose: Fragrant woodland spices with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg to the fore accompanied by aromatic oils and dried, earthy undertones. The classic pot still spices build over time working in tandem with delicate hints of nectarine to create a zesty fruit note with light dustings of white pepper. Additional aromas of dairy fudge and vanilla with a rich nutty character further accentuate the sweet and savoury nature of this wonderfully complex whiskey.

Taste: Fortified by the Irish Oak, the pot still spices lead with a heightened intensity thanks to the rich wood tannins before subsiding to reveal velvety tones of caramel with sweet stewed apple and touches of orange peel. Dark chocolate with subtle notes of honeycomb and vanilla weave amongst the spices, fruits and oak adding further complexity and intrigue.

Finish: Delightfully long finish with the fruits and spices slowly fading, allowing the Irish Oak to linger until the very end.

About Irish Distillers and AFI*

Committed to giving back to nature and nurturing a sustainable environment for Kylebeg Wood, Irish Distillers has supported an internationally recognised protocol for monitoring forest growth and management called the AFI* protocol.

Kylebeg Wood is one of over 100 forests across western Europe that are similarly monitored.  Under this protocol, the forest is assessed every five years in terms of its sustainability, productivity and ecology.  The objective is to learn about how the forest develops over time and responds to different management interventions.

It is intended that this will be used as a demonstration and measurement of best oak forest management practice in Ireland and is also an investment in the long-term development and production of coopering grade oak in Ireland.

*AFI stands for Association Futaie Irrégulière which means Association of Irregular Forestry
