Suntory - Hakushu Bourbon Barrel

Suntory – Hakushu Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Hakushu key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Hakushu Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Hakushu malts. The distillery where these malts are crafted lies nested deep within the Hakushu forest, 700 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the southern Japanese Alps’ Mt. Kaikomagatake. The area’s cold climate is an essential ingredient that gives Hakushu malts their mild refreshing taste and crisp citrus aromas with a distinctive vanilla flavour that can be found only in a bourbon barrel-aged whisky. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.

Suntory - Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel

Suntory – Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Yamazaki key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Yamazaki malts. The whisky is cradled in bourbon barrels and stored in aging cellars located in Japan’s Yamazaki and Oumi regions until it reaches the peak of maturity. It is here that nature paints a changing backdrop with a palette of seasonal colours and provides a warm moist climate to slowly nurture the whisky within the barrel. The result is a distinctively Japanese whisky with an uncommon aroma and smooth, lingering sweet flavour that only a bourbon barrel can impart. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.
Colour: dark amber;
Aroma: vanilla, honey and caramel;
Taste: robust, woody;

Mosstowie - 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition

Mosstowie – 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 33 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines.
AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Freshly washed wool and hessian. With hints of polished oak, beeswax and orange peel.
TASTE WITHOUT WATER: A sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour. Pepper and ash notes linger.
AROMA WITH WATER: Creamy hot chocolate aromas with spiced orange and cardamom notes.
TASTE WITH WATER: Cinnamon and Clove influences with hints of Cedar wood.

Oban - 1995 Distillers Edition

Oban – 1995 Distillers Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 15 Year Old.   Strength: 43%
Summary: Oban is the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands; the meeting place between land and sea. A perfect, sheltered harbour makes it the principal seaport for the Isles and the capital of the West Highlands.
It has a mild, temperate climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream and washed (too often, some might say) by the soft rain that often falls hereabouts. This misty, maritime character, with a background of heather and peat, is perfectly echoed in the malt whisky produced at Oban.
Oban is made using only the finest barley, malted to the distillerys own particular specification. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.
1995 Distillers Edition: Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
The founders of Oban distillery were entrepreneurs who imported and exported goods for which they could sense a demand. They would have approved of the Spanish influence brought to bear in this Montilla Fino cask wood finish.
A seriously complex whisky of the highest order – a glorious zesty nose and plenty of sweet fruit complemented by salt and chewy, roasty caramel malt.
DISTILLED: 1995.
BOTTLED: 2010.
APPEARANCE: Amber, rose-hued.
NOSE: Outstanding. Fruity and pungent; sea salt with crushed grapes, orange zest and hints of smoke. Massively complex.
BODY: Full, rich.
PALATE: Most explosive Oban ever. Soft malt then wave upon wave of delicate yet rich fruit notes on a tide of brine.
FINISH: Sweetened Jamaican coffee and oak, with an attractive malt-biscuit effect as it dies down.

Old Pulteney - 12 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 12 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 12 Year Old   Strength: 40%
Summary: Matured wholly in air-dried, hand-selected ex-bourbon casks, the unashamedly excellent Old Pulteney 12-years-old is the definitive expression in the Old Pulteney family. Traditionally crafted using techniques that other distillers have long abandoned, this winner of numerous gold medals at the most prestigious international competitions is a high water-mark of quality spirits.
Nose: Medium to high intensity, dry with a hint of sea air.
Colour: Deep amber with a slight pink hue.
Taste: Dry, medium bodied and smooth with a clean finish: faintly salty with a slight sherry note.

Old Pulteney - 17 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 17 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 17 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: The 17-year-old predominantly features ex-bourbon maturation, with the addition of spirit that has been wholly matured in Spanish wood ex-sherry casks, predominantly Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. This adds a subtle depth and complexity to the whisky, making for an outstanding after-dinner drink.
Nose: Sweet with traces of apples and pears: slightly woody with a hint of butterscotch.
Colour: Red amber with a rich autumnal hue.
Taste: Full bodied, with hints of vanilla and floral notes in the background; a long-lasting memorable finish.

Old Pulteney - 21 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 21 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
Nose: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
Colour: Golden amber with straw highlights.
Taste: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

Edencroft – Parkers Heritage Collection Bourbon

April 29, 2013 by Gary Leave a Comment

Parkers Heritage Collection - Master Distillers Blend Of Mashbills

Parkers Heritage Collection – Master Distillers Blend Of Mashbills
Country: American   Region: USAKentucky
Age: 11 year Old   Strength: 65.8%
Summary: Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc., the countrys largest independent family-owned and operated spirits producer and marketer, announces the September release of the sixth edition of Parkers Heritage Collection, a limited annual series of rare, aged American Whiskeys that pays tribute to 6th Generation Master Distiller Parker Beam. The 2012 release will feature select barrels of 11 year old Heaven Hill rye-based Bourbons, used for such renown brands as Elijah Craig and Evan Williams, mingled with select barrels of the wheated mashbill Heaven Hill uses for the Old Fitzgerald line, also aged for 11 years. Bottled at cask strength, this bottling, much like the highly acclaimed "Golden Anniversary" bottling of 2009, showcases not only the individual whiskeys, but also the skill of the Master Distiller in selecting and marrying them together in the right proportions.
The rye-based Bourbon was pulled from the 4th floor of Rickhouse "R" in Bardstown, while the wheated Bourbon aged on the topmost 7th floor of nearby Rickhouse "T". Like previous Parkers Heritage Collection releases, the "Master Distillers Blend of Mashbills" will not be chill-filtered as is the custom for many Bourbon brands, thereby helping to maintain the natural esters and compounds which provide a rich texture and mouthfeel. The release will comprise of 3 "dumps", with each having a slightly different barrel proof. The first dump will carry a proof of 131.6, or 65.8% alcohol by volume.
This years release of Parkers Heritage Collection promises to be a worthy successor to the previous five releases, which, having won multiple awards from Whisky Advocate Magazine (formerly Malt Advocate Magazine), Whisky Magazine and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, stand as some of the most critically lauded American Whiskeys in recent memory. Past bottlings have won awards ranging from "Best North American Whiskey" to "American Whiskey of the Year" to "Best of Show, Brown Spirits."
Packaged in the same upscale 750ml bottle as the previous five editions, the Parkers Heritage Collection Master Distillers Blend of Mashbills Bourbon is available in a three bottle case that should start hitting retail shelves and back bars in September, in time for the cooler weather that traditionally signals "whiskey season".
"It is always an enjoyable challenge to plan out the annual releases of the Parkers Heritage Collection, and this years was no different" noted Heaven Hills Parker Beam. "Weve always traditionally used a rye-based Bourbon mashbill, but weve been making wheated Bourbon for over a decade now, and the way they blend with each other has always intrigued me. Were very pleased with the taste and finish of this years edition, and releasing it at barrel proof allows consumers to have some say in how it presents itself."
The 2012 Parkers Heritage Collection Master Distillers Blend of Mashbills is a very limited release, as all of the previous five have been. Only about 7,500 bottles are available for national and international sales, and as always, once these are shipped from Bardstown, no more will be made available.
