Suntory - Hakushu Bourbon Barrel

Suntory – Hakushu Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Hakushu key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Hakushu Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Hakushu malts. The distillery where these malts are crafted lies nested deep within the Hakushu forest, 700 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the southern Japanese Alps’ Mt. Kaikomagatake. The area’s cold climate is an essential ingredient that gives Hakushu malts their mild refreshing taste and crisp citrus aromas with a distinctive vanilla flavour that can be found only in a bourbon barrel-aged whisky. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.
Colour: gold;
Aroma: tropical fruits, citrus and vanilla;

Suntory - Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel

Suntory – Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Yamazaki key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Yamazaki malts. The whisky is cradled in bourbon barrels and stored in aging cellars located in Japan’s Yamazaki and Oumi regions until it reaches the peak of maturity. It is here that nature paints a changing backdrop with a palette of seasonal colours and provides a warm moist climate to slowly nurture the whisky within the barrel. The result is a distinctively Japanese whisky with an uncommon aroma and smooth, lingering sweet flavour that only a bourbon barrel can impart. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.
Colour: dark amber;
Aroma: vanilla, honey and caramel;
Taste: robust, woody;

Mosstowie - 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition

Mosstowie – 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 33 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines.
AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Freshly washed wool and hessian. With hints of polished oak, beeswax and orange peel.
TASTE WITHOUT WATER: A sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour. Pepper and ash notes linger.
AROMA WITH WATER: Creamy hot chocolate aromas with spiced orange and cardamom notes.
TASTE WITH WATER: Cinnamon and Clove influences with hints of Cedar wood.

Oban - 1995 Distillers Edition

Oban – 1995 Distillers Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 15 Year Old.   Strength: 43%
Summary: Oban is the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands; the meeting place between land and sea. A perfect, sheltered harbour makes it the principal seaport for the Isles and the capital of the West Highlands.
It has a mild, temperate climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream and washed (too often, some might say) by the soft rain that often falls hereabouts. This misty, maritime character, with a background of heather and peat, is perfectly echoed in the malt whisky produced at Oban.
Oban is made using only the finest barley, malted to the distillerys own particular specification. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.
1995 Distillers Edition: Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
The founders of Oban distillery were entrepreneurs who imported and exported goods for which they could sense a demand. They would have approved of the Spanish influence brought to bear in this Montilla Fino cask wood finish.
A seriously complex whisky of the highest order – a glorious zesty nose and plenty of sweet fruit complemented by salt and chewy, roasty caramel malt.
DISTILLED: 1995.
BOTTLED: 2010.
APPEARANCE: Amber, rose-hued.
NOSE: Outstanding. Fruity and pungent; sea salt with crushed grapes, orange zest and hints of smoke. Massively complex.
BODY: Full, rich.
PALATE: Most explosive Oban ever. Soft malt then wave upon wave of delicate yet rich fruit notes on a tide of brine.
FINISH: Sweetened Jamaican coffee and oak, with an attractive malt-biscuit effect as it dies down.

Old Pulteney - 12 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 12 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 12 Year Old   Strength: 40%
Summary: Matured wholly in air-dried, hand-selected ex-bourbon casks, the unashamedly excellent Old Pulteney 12-years-old is the definitive expression in the Old Pulteney family. Traditionally crafted using techniques that other distillers have long abandoned, this winner of numerous gold medals at the most prestigious international competitions is a high water-mark of quality spirits.
Nose: Medium to high intensity, dry with a hint of sea air.
Colour: Deep amber with a slight pink hue.
Taste: Dry, medium bodied and smooth with a clean finish: faintly salty with a slight sherry note.

Old Pulteney - 17 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 17 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 17 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: The 17-year-old predominantly features ex-bourbon maturation, with the addition of spirit that has been wholly matured in Spanish wood ex-sherry casks, predominantly Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. This adds a subtle depth and complexity to the whisky, making for an outstanding after-dinner drink.
Nose: Sweet with traces of apples and pears: slightly woody with a hint of butterscotch.
Colour: Red amber with a rich autumnal hue.
Taste: Full bodied, with hints of vanilla and floral notes in the background; a long-lasting memorable finish.

Old Pulteney - 21 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 21 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
Nose: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
Colour: Golden amber with straw highlights.
Taste: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

(l-r): Sandy Gourlay, general manager of Òran Mór; Jim Irvine and Sue Buchanan (formerly of Waverly TBS).

Congratulations to Jim Irvine from Gordon & MacPhail who has been declared Whisky Representative of the Year at the Òran Mór Whisky Awards, held in Glasgow.

Jim joined Gordon & MacPhail, the leading malt whisky specialists based in Elgin, just one year ago and has quickly cemented his place in the company, and among his customers. Jim works across the west of Scotland, from Campbeltown to Dumfries, with Glasgow, Islay, Ayrshire and Arran in between, promoting Gordon & MacPhail’s range of single malt Scotch whiskies, including their own distillery’s brand, Benromach.

Jim has 20 years’ experience in the drinks trade and was nominated by members of the trade, who range from hoteliers, restaurateurs, licensees and wholesalers.

East Kilbride resident Jim said: “I went to the awards hoping that Gordon & MacPhail would win an award, but I had no idea that I was nominated for one. I was absolutely gobsmacked and really chuffed to win Whisky Representative of the Year.

“I’ve been with Gordon & MacPhail for just over a year, which makes the award even more special. It’s a family company with a huge reach across Scotland and globally, too.”

Stephen Rankin, Director of UK Sales at Gordon & MacPhail, said: “Jim has been a passionate ambassador for Gordon & MacPhail since he joined our skilled team a year ago and it’s wonderful that his knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment have been recognised by the trade.”

Benromach 10 Years Old was ‘Highly Commended’in the Experts Choice category and Benromach Peat Smoke was ‘Highly Commended’ in the People’s Choice category at the same awards.

The Òran Mór Whisky Awards have been running since 2008 and attract entries and nominations from across Scotland.

Formerly Kelvinside Parish Church, Òran Mór, Gaelic for ‘great melody of life’ or ‘big song’, is a thriving arts & entertainment venue in the heart of Glasgow’s West End.

It has a dedicated Whisky Bar and is known as a live music venue throughout Scotland. Visit www.oran-mor.co.uk for more information.

World’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky goes on sale!

November 13, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old

Today, the remaining bottles of the world’s joint oldest single malt Scotch whisky goes on sale.

Gordon & MacPhail is releasing the remainder of the 100 bottles of the Glenlivet 70 Years Old giving collectors and consumers (ones with deep pockets anyway!) a final chance to own a piece of Scotland’s liquid history.

Distilled in 1940, the first batch of the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old was released in March 2011 and met with international acclaim. All 100 large decanters sold out quickly.

The decanters now on sale are the last drops left of the Glenlivet 70 Years Old from this cask.

Michael Urquhart, Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the international interest for our Generations range. The Glenlivet 70 Years Old is a sublime whisky and is a treasure for whisky enthusiasts and collectors.

“Our family has passed its knowledge and expertise of Scotch whisky from generation to generation since we were founded over 117 years ago. We’re proud to be able to share this with the rest of the world.”

Cask 339 was filled at Glenlivet Distillery on 3rd February 1940, to the instruction of John Urquhart, grandfather and great-grandfather of Gordon & MacPhail’s current owners.

Seventy years on, the whisky has now been bottled at cask strength (45.9%).

World-renowned whisky expert, Charles Maclean, said: “The Glenlivet 1940 comes from a distillery which has been the benchmark against which other malts have been measured since the 1820s. Such a whisky will never be seen again. It is incredibly rare, and therefore highly collectable. But, more importantly, it is also celestial on the palate.”

Each bottle is presented in a tear-shaped hand-blown crystal decanter with an elegant British Hallmarked silver stopper. The decanter has a Sterling silver base and is framed in a handmade box, crafted in Scotland using Scottish Yew.

And now for the price – expect to pay around £15,000!

TASTING NOTE – Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old by Charles MacLean
(70YO Single cask Speyside @45.9%Vol)

Appearance: Deep amber, with tawny lights. First fill sherry butt.

Aroma: A mild nose-feel. The first aroma is of an old cocktail cabinet, with sherry notes predominating: polished wood, soft leather and a trace of candlewax. Behind this are fruity notes, lightly baked apples (even Tarte Tatin), but also fresh orange juice, and a thread of smoke or ash in the distance Adding a drop of water suppresses the fruity notes and slightly enhances the sweetness (now tablet) and smokiness.

Taste: A waxy, teeth-coating, mouthfeel; smooth and voluptuous. The taste is sweetish to start, then savoury, with a trace of salt – might this be a rare example of ‘umami’ in whisky, the elusive fifth primary taste? The finish is long, with a faint smokiness in the aftertaste. Drinks well at natural strength. With a drop of water the flavours remain intact.

Development: Fades gracefully towards vanilla fudge and sanded wood.

Comment: A stupendous whisky! Although it resonates with aged character – and indeed characteristics from another era – it retains vitality, both on the nose and in the mouth.

Generations Glenlivet nominated for industry Oscars

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old

The Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old is the only whisky to be shortlisted in this year’s Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards, widely regarded as the Scottish food and drink industry’s ‘Oscars’.

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old was released by Gordon & MacPhail in 2011 as an addition to its ‘Generations’ range.

The range features the world’s oldest and rarest Scotch single malt whiskies and this is the second 70 year old single malt to be released by Gordon & MacPhail.

It also has the distinction of being one of the oldest single malt Scotch whisky in existence.

This cask of The Glenlivet was laid down on 3rd February 1940, on the instruction of John Urquhart, grandfather and great-grandfather of the company’s current owners.
Since then, successive generations of the Urquhart family waited for the day when it would be ready to share with fellow whisky lovers. And now, 70 years on, the whisky has been bottled at a cask strength of 45.9%.

David Urquhart, joint managing director of Gordon & MacPhail, said: “This nomination is recognition of the Glenlivet 70 Years Old’s superb quality, luxury and its rarity.

“The cask this whisky came from was laid down by my grandfather in 1940 and it was carefully watched over by successive generations of the Urquhart family until we decided to bottle it ourselves 70 years later.

A limited number of bottles were released by Gordon & MacPhail in 2011, creating excitement among whisky connoisseurs across the world.

Only 100 70cl decanters were released, selling at around £13,000, the smaller, 20cl decanters sold at £3,500.

Each bottle is beautifully presented in a tear-shaped hand-blown crystal decanter with an elegant British Hallmarked silver stopper. The decanter nestles in a sterling silver base and is framed in a handmade box, crafted in Scotland using Scottish elm.

The Scotland Food and Drink Excellence Awards will be held on Thursday 24 May in Dunblane, Stirlingshire.

Gordon & MacPhail named drinks wholesaler of the year

Benromach is Speyside’s smallest working distillery

Elgin based whisky, wine and spirit merchant, Gordon & MacPhail, has been named Drinks Wholesaler of the Year at the Drinks Retailing Awards 2012.

The awards, held at The Dorchester, London on 7 February 2012, brought together the leading lights of the drinks industry to recognise innovation and best practice across the sector.

Established in Elgin in 1895, the family owned and managed business of Gordon & MacPhail is one of the UK’s leading independent specialist wholesalers. Gordon & MacPhail stocks over 4,500 product lines, including of course, their famous malts.

They are the World’s Leading Malt Whisky Specialist and Gordon & MacPhail bottles more than 300 expressions of Single Malt Whisky under various ranges – selling them throughout the UK and exporting to more than 50 countries worldwide.

In 2009 the company won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, following a 94% increase in exports over five years.

In March 2010 Gordon & MacPhail made history as it launched the world’s oldest single malt whisky – Gordon & MacPhail Generations Mortlach 70 Years Old – at an exclusive event at Edinburgh Castle.

This was followed up in March 2011 with the release of another ancient Single Malt – Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old.

Gordon & MacPhail also owns Benromach Distillery. Located on the outskirts of Forres, Benromach is Speyside’s smallest working distillery, employing just two experienced distillers.

Benromach Cask

Established in 1898 the distillery went through many changes of ownership and closures before being ‘rescued’ by Gordon & MacPhail, who purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five year period before it was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.

The award was presented to Gordon & MacPhail in acknowledgement of the company’s extensive portfolio of products, investment in staff training and commitment to delivering excellent customer service.

The judges were also impressed by the company’s investment in technology including a new voice activated picking system. (Could do with one of those at home!)

Receiving the award on behalf of Gordon & MacPhail, Joint Managing Director, David Urquhart said: “Since 1895, we have placed our customers and their requirements at the heart of our business.

We value our working relationships and are eager to listen to our customers, working with them to meet their objectives. Along with the ongoing support from our suppliers and customers, winning this award is testament to the commitment and skills of the Gordon & MacPhail team at and their drive to continually exceed customer expectations.”

The company employs 140 people from its base in Elgin, of which a sales team of 20 covers the length of the UK. Gordon & MacPhail operates wholly owned bonded and duty paid warehouses, along with it’s own transport network.

Master of Malt Stock Diamond Jubilee Whisky

February 6, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glen Grant 60 Diamond Jubilee Whisky

Glen Grant 60 Diamond Jubilee Whisky

Well that’s timing!

Hot on the heels of my blog announcing the release of a very special whisky – matured for 60 years, and bottled in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (see below); Master of Malt have just let me know that they now stock it!

That was quick!

Bottled on 2nd February 2012, and distilled on 2nd February 1952, this whisky has matured in a Sherry cask for a full 60 years, making it one of the oldest whiskies ever released for sale. The whisky has been bottled by legendary Scottish Bottlers Gordon and Macphail.

The whisky is packaged in a beautiful handmade decanter, individually numbered (only 85 decanters are available worldwide), and is sure to become a collector’s item almost immediately.

Master of Malt have compiled tasting notes for the whisky, which read as follows:

Nose: Rich malt, an apple-y freshness which belies its age. A good hit of really decent honey is followed on the tail by cinnamon and allspice.

Palate: Initially slightly mineralic – reminiscent of a well-aged Riesling, as the honey from the nose powers through again. The freshness from the nose is still here – an absolutely magnificently juicy dram. Freshly-picked cherries join the apple, but there’s no hint of them having been stewed, these are fresh as a daisy.

Finish: The official tasting notes for this make mention of the fact that this whisky bitters out towards the end. I don’t get that at all. The freshness powers through, bringing still more of that tangy, sweet goodness with it. The spices make themselves more known towards the death, with the Cinnamon and Allspice being joined by just a touch of the Clove.

Overall: An absolutely magnificent whisky. As with previous ‘very well aged’ G&M bottlings, the surprise is how incredibly fresh and juicy it has remained. Were a dram of this presented to ‘her-for-whom-it-was-bottled’, we’d like to think she’d get on with it very well. Kudos, G&M.

Rare £8,000 whisky marks Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

February 6, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Rare whisky launched to mark Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

The Rare whisky launched to mark Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

Rare whisky launched to mark Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

A 60 year old Single Malt Whisky is being launched today in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee by one of the world’s leading malt whisky specialists Gordon & MacPhail.

The Elgin based and family-run Single Malt Whisky specialist has released only 85 bottles of Glen Grant 60 Years Old.

Distilled on 2nd February 1952, four days before the Queen acceded the throne, the whisky was bottled on 2nd February 2012 at cask strength, making it exactly 60 years old.

Gordon & MacPhail’s Joint Managing Director Michael Urquhart said: “Glen Grant 60 Years Old is a rare single malt whisky and we are delighted to be releasing it to mark the celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.

With whisky of this quality and rarity – each bottle comes with a certificate of authenticity – we expect considerable interest, not just in the UK, but from the international marketplace where recent export figures have shown we have an avid consumer following.

In producing the packaging for this remarkable Single Malt we worked with Scottish craftsmen, allowing us to showcase some of the finest talent in the country.”

Gordon & MacPhail Glen Grant 60 Years Old is described as having poise and great complexity, displaying aromas of Cox’s Pippins and Granny Smith apples, laced with cinnamon and root ginger.

The palate reveals the age and depth of character as rich, burnt fruit notes mingle with a drying, spicy edge and a dusting of white pepper.

G&M's 1952 Cask

G&M's 1952 Cask

The Single Malt is presented in a pyramid shaped crystal decanter adorned with a diamond shaped stopper. Each decanter is expertly engraved – the script in-filled with silver – and uniquely numbered.

The decanter carries an engraved crown with a sparking Swarovski crystal, set at the meeting point of the crowns two arches. A silver collar, placed around the neck of the decanter completes the presentation.

The decanter is packaged in a hand-crafted box made of Scottish Elm, felled a short distance from Holyrood House, the Queen’s official Scottish residence. The decanter nestles in the box lined with luxurious, purple Harris

Tweed and a dust jacket made from the same material protects the box and the precious contents.

The limited edition bottles are expected to sell for around £8,000 per bottle.

TASTING NOTE:

After maturing slowly for sixty years the result is a beautifully balanced Single Malt with poise and great complexity. The introduction to the whisky is one of fresh fruit and spices – aromas of Cox’s Pippins and Granny Smith apples,
laced with cinnamon and root ginger. In the background linger subtle hints of lavender and rose petals, all wrapped in a sweet, toffee parcel.
A sip of the whisky reveals the age and depth of character. Initially there are hints of cedar wood and freshly cut grass. However, these are quickly replaced by rich, burnt fruit notes with a drying, spicy edge and a dusting of white pepper.
A smokiness twists its way through the flavour leaving a slightly bitter, treacle toffee finish.
