The Benromach Tweet Tasting – History In The drinking!

December 16, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Treats before Christmas!

It was the 100th. Tweet Tasting last Wednesday night and the last one before Chrimbo and to celebrate both events Steve from The Whisky Wire gave us a cracking selection of drams to savour from the folks at the Benromach Distillery.

We were lucky enough to get a chance to try their Heritage 1973 Cask 4606 of which only 52 bottles have been produced. So, a rare chance indeed!

Benromach is a Speyside distillery founded by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman in 1898 and currently owned and run by Gordon and Macphail who took over the distillery in 1993. Following a painstaking restoration, it was re-opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.

Since then sales of the classic Speyside malt have grown dramatically and Benromach is now exported to 42 countries around the world.

In 2013 a third distiller was recruited and additional warehouses were added to allow production to be expanded.

April 2014 saw a new look for the flagship Benromach 10 Years Old, reflecting its pre-1960s character and the fact that each cask is hand-filled, hand-weighed and hand-stamped.

In all the four drams sampled were:-

  • Benromach 10 Years Old
  • Benromach 100° Proof
  • Benromach 15 Years Old
  • Benromach 1973

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #BenromachXmas on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Benromach 10 Years Old (43%)

For this 10 year old the recipe is – 80% Bourbon barrels, 20% Sherry hogshead. Final year in first fill Oloroso casks.

Nose: Peaty and smokey – whiffs of sweetness and lovely caramel, maple syrup and honey aromas. There’s also stewed fruits and vanilla with the smoke fadeing away after a while …

Palate: Sweet Christmas cake mixture, grapefruit and a whiff of smoke pushing thru the sherriness.

Finish: Long, fiery, peppery, smoke-infused finish with hints of tobacco. Dry tanin aftertaste.

Overall: Quite a raw beast this one but a very drinkable dram all the same.

Tasting Notes – Benromach 100° Proof (57%)

Named after the old Imperial measure which followed a tradition established when skeptical sailors, who wanted to ensure their rum rations had not been watered down mixed spirit with gunpowder. If the mixture ignited, its strength was “proved”!

Nose: Sweet sherry frutiness. Apples and sweet sugars, honey, chocolate and demerara makes an appearance.

Palate: Sweet, rich fruit cake, sherry and spiciness – all delivered in an “Oomph!” of pure spirit!

Finish: Very smooth finish, lovely muted pepperyness peat and smokiness blending together well. Some tobacco also.

Overall: Class in a Glass – all you need is a roaring open fire to sip it by – and don’t get up from your seat too quickly!

Tasting Notes – Benromach 15 Years Old (43%)

As with the 10 year old the 15 year is matured in both bourbon barrels & sherry casks, with the sherry being the more dominant part.

Benromach insist on only using the highest quality first fill casks, from a variety of different sources. They take casks from the bodegas of one of the world’s leading sherry houses in Spain: Williams & Humbert.

Benromach also have new oak casks made to exact specifications of thickness of stave & charring by Antonio Paez Lobato. These casks are used to mature sherry for 3 years before they’re emptied & shipped to the distillery.

Benromach also use ex-bourbon barrels, which are shipped from America & coopered in Speyside.

Nose: Honeyed and waxy with green apples. No smoke etc. for me on this one at all and I have to admit to a little mint! (This caused quite a discussion on the night!)

Palate: Smooth, rounded, bit of smoke, some lovely frutiness and is my mouth deceiving me – do I taste a little mint as well?!

Finish: Sweet, dry finish, hint of tobacco – quite short … I thought.

Tasting Notes – Benromach 1973 (48.9%)

Limited to just 52 bottles, Benromach Heritage 1973 Cask 4606, is a UK exclusive.

Benromach Heritage 1973, is a 42 Year Old single malt, which was distilled before the Urquhart family took the reins and brought Benromach Distillery back to life in 1998. It currently retails for around £1400

Nose: Cherrys, crisp green apples, sumptous honey! Pineapple and sweet candy with zingy refreshers!

Palate: WoW! Intense! Sweet, tropical fruits, mint & zesty lemon.

Finish: Coffee and sweet pepper finish but the tropical hit just goes on and on! Familiar hints of tobacco at the very end.

Overall: Lots of flavours coming and going within this exceptional dram. I could have gone on discovering new flavours all night and I probably would have but my sample ran dry!

It was a big deal for me to get to taste this cracker – so many different flavours in a glass – remarkable!

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the four, I think it’s got to be the Benromach 1973. Well it has to be doesn’t it? History in the drinking!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and of course, the team at Benromach (@Benromach), for sending the samples and without whom!

Benromach Tweet Tasting: 4 Drams That Will Suit Everyone!

December 11, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromachs 4 Expressions!

Benromachs 4 Expressions!

Wednesday nights Tweet Tasting, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, gave us the opportunity to sample an incredibly diverese range of drams from the Benromach distillery.

On the night the malts sampled were:-

  • Benromach 10 Year Old
  • Benromach 100° Proof
  • Benromach Organic
  • Benromach Peat Smoke

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say (and there was quite a few of them!) you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #BenromachTT on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Benromach 10 Year Old ( 43% )

A pale amber colour for this 10YO – 80% Bourbon barrels, 20% Sherry hogshead. Final year in first fill Oloroso casks.

Nose: Heathery, slightly smokey, peaty with whiffs of sweetness and a lovely caramel. Giving way to stewed fruits, sultanas and vanilla and finally getting basil. A joy to nose!

Palate: Sweet xmas cake mixture, grapefruit and a whiff of smoke pushing thru the sherriness. Quite a raw beast this one …

Finish: Very fiery and peppery with a dry tanin aftertaste – long!

Overall: “Fiesty one you are!” comes to mind with the 10YO. A very drinkable dram.

Tasting Notes – Benromach 100° Proof ( 57% )

This whisky is rich sherry colour and has been bottled without chillfiltering.

Named after the old Imperial measure which followed a tradition established when skeptical sailors, who wanted to ensure their rum rations had not been watered down mixed spirit with gunpowder. If the mixture ignited, its strength was “proved”!

Nose: Sweet sherry frutiness. Apples and a sweet sugary something … rum! Dark chocolate and demerara for sure in there. Is this a wolf in sheeps clothing?

Palate: WoW! That tongue texture of pure spirit! Rich, sweet rich fruit cake, sherry and spiciness.

Finish: Very smooth finish, lovely muted pepperyness peat and smokiness blends together well.

Overall: In spite of it’s 57% ABV, this is a lovely dram to nose, sip and savour. Excellent dramming to be had here. Most people on the night panged for a roaring open fire to sip this by!

Tasting Notes – Benromach Organic ( 43% )

Matured in virgin oak casks giving this dram a pale amber colour.

Certified Organic from start to finish and meeting rigorous UK Soil Association standards for growing the ingredients, distillation, maturation and bottling. Unique on launch in 2006, it is still very rare today.

Nose: Strongly coconut with apples and oranges. Very fresh and ‘new’. There’s hints of chinese tea in there as well.

Palate: Sugary pears, pineapple and coconut, sherbert sweetness with fruity pleasures – so different from the 100!

Finish: A short finish – sweet to the end – maybe a slight hint of grapefruit. It gets quite zingy on the tongue though – almost citric acidy.

Overall: The freshness of the virgin oak casks gives this dram a vitality and youthfullness that’s unique. Soft, fruity flavours abound giving this malt a lightness that few other drams can achieve.

Tasting Notes – Benromach Peat Smoke ( 46% )

Matured in first fill oak Bourbon barrels and a pale straw like colour. The finest Scottish barley is malted with high levels of peat smoke at 67ppm (the phenol level.)

Nose: Smell that peat – heaven! Rich peat topped with smokiness and sea spray – take me to the smokery! Interstingly theres a hint of olives in there as well.

Palate: Lovely smooth, earthy peat, BBQ & smoke with a little smooth citrus.

Finish: Peppery, smokey finish coupled with smooth fruit.

Overall: Not as overpowering as you’d think in the peat department. Just very nicely done! A lovely dram.

My Favourite On The Night

My Favourite On The Night: Benromach 100 Proof – just an awesome dram – amazingly low price point as well!

It was Very closely followed by the Peat Smoke. I love a peat dram so it was a slightly painful decision to put the 100 before it but it just goes to show how good the 100 is!

Four different drams, four completely different tastes. An amazing feat and one which should ensure that there’s a Benromach to suit everyones palate!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening.

And of course, the team at Benromach, for sending the samples and without whom!

Summary: Lurking within is an Ardbeg of hidden depths. Extremely fierce charring of the cask gives Ardbeg Alligator a unique spicy bite that’ll catch you unawares. Charge your glass with a splash of water and roll it around and around in your jaws!
Nose: Warning signs of cumin and barbecue sauce.
Taste: Hot and spicy flavours grip you, ginger and chocolate thrash.
Finish: Slow and long mocha espresso while cigar smoke ebbs.

Ardbeg - Rollercoaster/committee Bottling

Ardbeg – Rollercoaster/committee Bottling
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 57.3%
Summary: Nose: youthful malts dominate; a patchwork of smoke on many different levels from ashy to ethereal: almost dizzying;
Taste: again, its the young Ardbeg which dominates; the delivery is almost painful as you shake your head at the shock of the spices and unfettered peat. A genuine greenness to the malts though some natural caramels do make a smoky surge;
Finish: long, buttery in part, limited sweetness; almost a touch of smoked bacon about it;
Balance: to be honest, it was the end of another long day – and book – when I tasted this and I momentarily forgot the story behind the malt. My reaction one of my researchers who happened to be in the tasting room was: "Bloody hell! They are sending me kids. If this was any younger id just be getting a bag of grist!" This malt may be a fabulous concept. And Rollercoaster is a pretty apt description, as this is a dram which appears to have the whisky equivalent of Aspergers. So dont expect the kind of balance that sweeps you into a world only Ardbeg knows. This, frankly, is not for the Ardbeg purist or snob. But for those determinded to bisect the malt in all its forms and guises, it is the stuff of the most rampant hard-ons.

White Horse / Bot 1954 Blended Scotch Whisky

White Horse / Bot 1954 Blended Scotch Whisky
Country: Scotland   Region:
Age:    Strength: 40%
Vintage: 1954   Bottler:
Summary: 75cl / 40% – A lovely old bottle of White Horse bottled over fifty years ago. We've tried a bottle of this from 1958 and believe you me, it is STUNNING. Very delicate, elegant structure (as you often get from a bottle this old); very powerful flavour (and quite peaty, given the links with Lagavulin).
