The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter: The Whisky Tasting Results!

The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter: The Whisky Tasting Results!

The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter: The Whisky Tasting Results!

Thousands of votes across 37 countries have been cast by whisky lovers to select a new limited edition from The Glenlivet, with its Exotic expression revealed today as the winner, with 39% of the vote.

The announcement follows a global campaign by The Glenlivet, during which the brand reached out to whisky fans around the world giving them the chance to select the next The Glenlivet expression for the first time ever.

The winning expression will be named “The Guardians’ Chapter” in recognition of the significant part the distillery’s fan club The Guardians of The Glenlivet has made to the voting.

The new whisky which is non-chill filtered, 48.7% proof and described as a rich, indulgent single malt will be bottled in limited quantities and distributed around the world from March 2014.

The three expressions which were selected to spark debate over single malt style preferences were named according to their taste profile, with the options being Classic, Exotic and Revival.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for The Glenlivet, adds: “Deciding on a new Scotch whisky expression is normally a privilege reserved for a very select handful of experts, revered for their knowledge and experience.

With The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter, we wanted to recognise the passion and expertise of our Guardians in an original and inspiring way by inviting them to write the next chapter in The Glenlivet’s history.”

Whisky Tasting: The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter

November 28, 2013 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet Guardians' Chapter

The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter

On 24th October in London, Glenlivet organised a tasting of their new Guardian’s Chapter. Guardians of The Glenlivet were invited to vote for their favourite expression (out of three selected by Master Distiller Alan Winchester).

It was a great opportunity to taste the three new expressions and to cast my vote on which one I thought was the best.

The Guardians’ votes will be counted and the winning whisky will be proclaimed “The Guardians’ Chapter”. A limited run of 2000 9 litre cases will then be released globally from February 2014.

And I missed it!

But … the good people of Glenlivet took pity on me and sent me my very own tasting pack.

The three new single malt whiskies have been created from the distillery’s exceptional cask collection and classified by their taste –

  • CLASSIC – fruity with soft sweet caramel and toffee notes.
  • EXOTIC – rich with warm spicy notes.
  • REVIVAL – fruity with a creamy sweetness.

Nikki Burgess, Brand Director for The Glenlivet, said: “Choosing a Scotch whisky is normally a privilege reserved for a very select handful of experts revered for their knowledge, passion and experience.

With The Glenlivet Guardians’ Chapter, we wanted to recognise and reward the knowledge, passion and experience of our Guardians and invite them to write the next chapter in The Glenlivet’s history.

We’re excited to see which whisky our Guardians choose and hope it brings members – new and old – closer together.”

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and my final verdict!

Tasting Notes – CLASSIC

Classic – 48.7% ABV – non chill filtered.

Nose: Quite woody with a heady scent of spice.

Palate: Sweet, fruity, slight caramel. A rich, fruit cake mixture before it goes in the oven!

Finish: Spicy, peppery and warm – a short finish.

Overall: I can see why they’ve called it the classic! It contains all the flavours you’d expect from a Glenlivet.

Tasting Notes – EXOTIC

Exotic – 48.7% ABV – non chill filtered.

Nose: A golden syrupy coloured malt with aromas of caramel and toffee.

Palate: Very thin feel on the tongue. Sweet, almost chocolatey flavours. Hints of spiciness to come.

Finish: Mmm … spicy and fiery with a medium to long finish.

Overall: Incredibly light malt that packs a spicy punch.

Tasting Notes – REVIVAL

Revival – 48.7% ABV – non chill filtered.

Nose: A pale straw colored malt, easily the lightest of the bunch that gives aromas of vanilla and fruit.

Palate: Syrupy sweetness that tickles on the tongue with flavours of vanilla and fruits.

Finish: The fruit and sweetness lingers and a moderate spice comes through. The sweetness goes on forever!

Overall: Almost like a dessert whisky. Such an usual taste!

The Verdict

The CLASSIC is simply that, a classic. Welcoming at anytime and a great companion sitting by the fire on a cold, wintery night.

The EXOTIC is very much like a breath of fresh air. With it’s spicy finish it’s a definite pick-me-up and would make a great party malt.

But, the one I’m going to go for is REVIVAL.

It may not be everyones choice but I loved it for daring to be so very different!

With a tingling sweetness and fruity flavours I think it would be a great malt for the connoisseur and novice alike.

It would be very welcome as a pre-dinner aperitif, a dessert style malt and as an after dinner malt to savour with friends.

In fact, welcome at any time!

The Whisky Exchange – Glen Garioch Tasting with Malt Master Iain McCallum!

May 16, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

A date for your Diary: Monday 28th May at 7:30pm

A date for your Diary: Monday 28th May at 7:30pm

Some very special whisky tasting news here: There’s to be a Glen Garioch Malt Whisky Tasting with Morrison Bowmore Malt Master Iain McCallum at TWE Vinopolis. The tasting will take place on Monday 28th May at 7:30pm.

Glen Garioch has been part of the Morrison Bowmore group since 1970 and is often seen as one their quieter distilleries. However, this is not quite the full picture.
Their whisky range was relaunched in 2009, breathing new life into the brand and their recent whiskies have revealed that they are anything but ‘quiet’.

Glen Garioch is now seen as a connoisseur’s dram, with the standard expressions now bottled un-chillfiltered at 48%. They’ve also complimented their range by yearly releases of cask strength vintage bottlings.

So it’s a rare honour to be joined by the company’s Malt Master Iain McCallum to lead us through a selection of their whiskies.

Iain will take us through the Glen Garioch range, showing the evolution of the whisky over the last 40 years and its emergence as a formidable single malt.

The Masterclass will start with the Founder’s Reserve and the World Whisky Award-winning 12 year old, before moving through the 1994, 1991, 1986 and 1978 vintage whiskies, ending on the excellent 1971 single cask, bottled in conjunction with The Whisky Exchange and launched at their Whisky Show in 2011.

Tickets are priced at £25 and will go on sale on Wednesday 16th May at 3pm.

As ever, tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis and are limited to two per customer. You can book your place at the tasting by phoning the shop on 020 7403 8688 or by calling in.

Edencrofts – Special Offer & Cheshire Whisky Event Update

April 17, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Royal Lochnagar - The Distillers Edition

Royal Lochnagar - The Distillers Edition

Two pieces of news from Edencrofts this week…

Number 1 is a great offer on the Royal Lochnagar – The Distillers Edition

Though the origins of the Lochnagar distillery go back to 1826, it was some 22 years later that its received its royal approval. In 1848, Queen Victoria selected Balmoral Castle as her holiday residence.
Only three days after she had arrived, the distillery manager John Begg made an invitation to Prince Albert to visit his distillery, knowing he was interested in all things mechanical.
To his surprise, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their three eldest children visited the next day. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. So impressed were they with the whisky, John Begg immediately received a Royal Warrant of Appointment as supplier to the Queen.

Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine. Carefully matched for a second maturation in Muscat casks, this is a beautifully soft and rounded whisky that’s a pleasure to drink.

STRENGTH: 40% ABV
APPEARANCE: Rich amber, with polished copper tones.
NOSE: Immediate strawberry jam, bags of jelly babies, then a richly malty heart with malt loaf and Dundee cake. With water, sweeter (rich fresh fruit aromas, as in a village fruit shop) and a hint of almond oil.
BODY: Medium.
PALATE: Oily. Fruity, with a silky cereal smoothness.
FINISH: Soft and biscuity, as with old fashioned fig rolls. Lovely late warmth.
PRICE: £32.50 per bottle – saving 32% on the standard retail price of £47.50.

(Promotion available whilst stocks last.)

Edencroft Malt Whisky Tasting Event

September 20, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Mark from Edencroft Fine Wine & Spirit Specialists has let us know about a great event this weekend.

It is the annual Nantwich Food & Drink Festival and Edencrofts will be holding an instore tasting of some great whiskies, namely Dalmore and Jura (a full list of whiskies being tasted is listed below).

The tasting will take place at the following times:

Friday September 23rd – 10am until 4.30PM
Saturday September 24th – 10am until 4.30pm
Sunday September 25th – 11am until 3pm

The Whiskies to be tasted:-

Dalmore 12 Year Old.
The Dalmore spirit benefits from longer than typical maturation – 12 years, instead of the more regular 10. Judicious selection and the precise balance of American white oak and Oloroso sherry wood, delivers their most vibrant expression – robust yet elegant, with an aftertaste of brilliant complexity.
Dalmore 15 Year Old.
Time, different cask types, varying sizes, and warehouse conditions can all influence the maturity of a single malt. For this Dalmore, 15 years in bespoke Matusalem, Apostoles and Amoroso sherry butts from Jerez de la Frontera have been elemental. The redolence of these vessels delivers the perfect balance between spirit, wood and maturity.
Dalmore Castle Leod 1995/Bordeaux Finish.
This limited edition bottling celebrates the ancient and historic seat of Clan Mackenzie and is the second in a series crafted by Master Distiller Richard Paterson in homage to Clan Mackenzie.
Dalmore King Alexander III.
Over the course of their history The Dalmore’s remarkable spirit has been filled to French wine barriques, Madeira drums, sherry butts from Jerez, Sicilian Marsala barrels, port pipes from the Douro and bourbon barrels from Kentucky.
Isle of Jura 10 Year Old.
Off the west coast of Scotland lies a magical island of soft sea breezes, freshly caught lobster and a bank that comes once a week. As good as life used to be. One shop, one pub, one community. One fine malt whisky distillery. A gift from nature.
Isle of Jura 16 Year Old.
For sixteen years in beachside warehouses, the gentle sea breezes have combined to make a whisky that truly expresses the magic of the island. A great age to drink Jura according to the locals. The rich colour of golden sun rays combine with a taste of strong butter notes, tinged with oranges and spices, leaving a sweet toffee and honey finish.
Isle of Jura Prophecy.
Prophecy is a single malt whisky that Jura have created to honour this tale of the third eye. Meticulously crafted from a selection of the finest and rarest aged Jura single malt whiskies, Prophecy is a profoundly peated spirit.
Jura Superstition.
The people of Jura are superstitious. From the prophecy of the one-eyed Campbell to an aversion to cutting peat before May, age-old island beliefs resonate to this day. Drawing on our finest older malts and spring-peated younger whiskies, Jura Superstition is a tribute to the people, the traditions and the mystical heritage that make Jura island life unique. Visit the island, meet the people, explore the past.

I think it promises to be a great event and includes some great malt whiskies.
