The Royal Salute Tweet Tasting – Celebrate History In The Dramming!
Last Monday saw me attend another Tweet Tasting, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, and one which gave me the opportunity to sample one of the worlds premium whisky blends.
I’m talking, of course, about Royal Salute and I have to say, I feel very lucky to have been involved, these kind of tastings are rare indeed!
Royal Salute is produced by Chivas Brothers (and owned by Pernod Ricard). Founded in 1801 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The Royal Salute brand’s home is Strathisla Distillery at Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland. The full-bodied Strathisla is at the heart of every Royal Salute expression.
The range was launched on 2 June 1953 by Chivas Brothers in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation. Named after the traditional 21-gun salute, Royal Salute whisky is aged for a minimum of 21 years.
On the night we were lucky enough to have Master Blender Colin Scott tweet along with us, sharing his insights and knowledge of this amazing blend.
The whiskies sampled were:-
- Royal Salute 21 Year Old
- Royal Salute Diamond Tribute
- Royal Salute 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny
- Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute
If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say, you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #RoyalSaluteTT on Twitter.
So, what did I think?
Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!
Tasting Notes – Royal Salute 21 Year Old ( 40% )
![]() |
Nose: Sweet fruits, pears, apples and fresh oak. Lovely apple aromas! Toffee, caramel and vanilla. Palate: Intensely sweet mixed with grapefruit. There’s a little bit of toffee in there as well as pineapple and pears. Finish: Short, dry, spicy finish with hints of tobacco. Overall: Undeniably smooth blend with some excellent fruit flavours. Quality abounds in this dram. |
Tasting Notes – Royal Salute Diamond Tribute ( 40% )
Bottled in honour of Queen Elizabeth II 60th. Anniversary of her coronation.
![]() |
Nose: Creamy and buttery. There’s a slight hint of fresh wood again as well as vanilla & caramel mixed with soft fruits. Palate: Sweet cake mixture, raisins, vanilla – almost a little rum like in it’s flavour! Finish: Smooth, short, dry finish. A little spice with the fruit makes it very enjoyable indeed. Overall: I think this is softer than the original 21 year old. Morish? I’d say! |
Tasting Notes – Royal Salute 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny ( 40% )
Crafted from whiskies aged for no less than 38 years, this unique blend shares its name with the Stone of Destiny, the Coronation stone of the ancient Scottish Kings.
For every bottle of the 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny that goes on sale, the ‘angels’ have already had four!
![]() |
Nose: Stewed spicy fruits – earthy deep flavours of aged malts. Mint, chocolate, spice and all things nice! Palate: Rich, plump, sweet Christmas cake with a hint of mint chocolate. Finish: Gloriously spicy with rich sherry – tongue lingering! Overall: This is a fine dram. You can taste the rich pedigree of whiskies that have gone into this blend. The balance of flavours is stunning! |
Tasting Notes – Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute ( 43% )
Named after the firing of 62 cannons, an exclusive privilege of the Tower of London, and reserved only for the most special Royal anniversaries.
The whiskies contained within this blend are aged for at least 40 years.
![]() |
Nose: This smells divine! Toffee and vanilla in old antique wood casks. Coffee, dark chocolate (the good stuff) abound. Even the colour looks classy! Palate: Pear, pineapple and apple create a sweet fusion of flavours. Fresh sevile oranges and rich, deep sherryness topped off with a little bit of smoke complete this taste celebration. Finish: Super smooth finish with a hint of spicy mint and orange. Overall: This dram is truly an experience, deserving due respect and patience to savour it properly. You can literally taste the fine history of the drams that go into it’s creation. Outstanding! |

anCnoc 35 Year Old Single Malt Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: Year Old Strength: 44.3% Summary: anCnoc single malt is refreshingly light and modern, even though it's made using traditional methods. Their 12 and 16 Year Old bottlings have a clean, fresh character. However, this is the more mature 35 Years Old, their oldest offering yet. As you'd expect, it shows a richer, more complex personality. However the resemblance to the younger expressions is unmistakable. anCnoc 35 Years Old is bottled in its most natural state; cask strength, non-chill filtered and natural colour & is limited to only 1,495 bottles worldwide. Nose: Initial aromas of sweet wood, sticky toffee pudding and baked apples are followed quickly by ripe sultanas and honey. Fragrant orange oil and cinnamon gum come to the fore next with a hint of peppermint lingering in the background. A drop of water brings out honeysuckle, gooseberry and chocolate-covered papaya. Great complexity. Colour: A rich, inviting amber. Taste: It sure has some body to it! Spicy entry with cinnamon and white pepper. Rich Christmas cake and walnuts are followed by bitter orange chocolate, that really rich 70% cocoa stuff. Look for vanilla ice-cream and a zing of lime at the back. A palate and a half. The finish is intense and fizzy with flavours of spicy dried fruit, cocoa, citrus and nuts. Really long and very elegant. |

anCnoc Flaughter Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: Strength: 46% Summary: Peaty overview Under the watchful eye of the Distillery Manager – and after a few anxious moments – anCnoc Peaty emerged once more from the stills at Knockdhu. Once laid down in bourbon casks, it developed beautifully, creating the most remarkable malt. Dark peaty smokiness and light subtle flavours, as one. The spirit has found form in a new range of individual expressions named after traditional peat-cutting tools, some of which are still used to this day. For we have those simple implements to thank for the wonder that is the Limited Edition anCnoc Peaty Collection. All that remains is to try them – and shine a light on your dark side. creating anCnoc Peaty When Knockdhu Distillery opened its doors back in October 1894, peat was most commonly used as a source of fuel throughout the Highlands. There’s no doubt whisky made at Knockdhu was initially peaty but as time and technology moved on so did the production methods and with the dawn of specialist maltings the Knockdhu Distillery gradually moved to the unpeated style we associate with anCnoc Single Malt Scotch Whisky today. In homage to our malt’s peaty origins we have crafted a truly remarkable Limited Edition Peaty range. a craft? a science? both anCnoc Peaty brings together dark peaty smokiness and light subtle flavours, as one. Each bottle carries a note of the PPM (parts per million) phenol in the distilled spirit. In short, the higher the PPM levels, the peatier the whisky will be to taste and in turn helping you discover the perfect anCnoc Peaty expression to shine a light on your dark side. Colour: anCnoc Flaughter is pale gold. Nose: Initially smoky and ashy. Underneath that, fresh vanilla notes ooze softness and creaminess while a sharper hint of sticky toffee offers a balancing sweetness. Taste: A warming and smooth experience; peaty and intense but remarkably rounded, it flickers with hints of fragrant pipe tobacco, orchard fruits, brown sugar sweetness and a slight medicinal overtone. An intensely flavoursome, smoky and smooth finish. |

Taste: Full-bodied and bursting with peaty richness. Soft undertones of honey, creamy vanilla, toffee and leather are punctuated by the freshness of green apples. |

Balblair 1983 Vintage / 1st Release Country: Scotland Region: Highland Age: Strength: 46% Summary: 96.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. Appearance: the weight has been touched by a wand: Demerara enriched Dundee cake without a trace of dissention in the ranks. The gentle grapey, sultana notes are almost ghostlike and are happy to enjoy top billing with the candy store barley sugar and chocolate coconut. Almost impossible to describe the full story, as the changes with temperature can be as startling as they are beautiful. Touches greatness…; Aroma: an almost exact carbon copy of the nose on the palate, except here the mouth fell tallies exactly with the weight. The sugars dissolve disarmingly and the fruitiness is little more than the odd breeze. A little more spice, though, than can be detected nasally though this reveals a nimleness of Ali in his pomp. Taste: like lengthening shadows on a summer's evening, the oak begins to make itself slightly better known. The barley recedes, though leaving behind a gristiness enhanced by syrup-dank coconut flakes; Finish: very few malts are this comfortable, or vibrant, by the time they reach their third decade in the cask. A highland gathering of sensational casks resulting in a celebration of what great Scotch whisky is really all about. Magnificent. © Tasting Notes from Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. |

Benromach Tweet Tasting: 4 Drams That Will Suit Everyone!
Wednesday nights Tweet Tasting, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, gave us the opportunity to sample an incredibly diverese range of drams from the Benromach distillery.
Benromach is a Speyside distillery founded by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman in 1898 and currently owned and run by Gordon and Macphail who took over the distillery in 1993. Following a painstaking restoration, it was re-opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.
Since then sales of the classic Speyside malt have grown dramatically and Benromach is now exported to 42 countries around the world.
In 2013 a third distiller was recruited and additional warehouses were added to allow production to be expanded.
April 2014 saw a new look for the flagship Benromach 10 Years Old, reflecting its pre-1960s character and the fact that each cask is hand-filled, hand-weighed and hand-stamped.
On the night the malts sampled were:-
- Benromach 10 Year Old
- Benromach 100° Proof
- Benromach Organic
- Benromach Peat Smoke
If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say (and there was quite a few of them!) you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #BenromachTT on Twitter.
So, what did I think?
Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!
Tasting Notes – Benromach 10 Year Old ( 43% )
A pale amber colour for this 10YO – 80% Bourbon barrels, 20% Sherry hogshead. Final year in first fill Oloroso casks.
![]() |
Nose: Heathery, slightly smokey, peaty with whiffs of sweetness and a lovely caramel. Giving way to stewed fruits, sultanas and vanilla and finally getting basil. A joy to nose! Palate: Sweet xmas cake mixture, grapefruit and a whiff of smoke pushing thru the sherriness. Quite a raw beast this one … Finish: Very fiery and peppery with a dry tanin aftertaste – long! Overall: “Fiesty one you are!” comes to mind with the 10YO. A very drinkable dram. |
Tasting Notes – Benromach 100° Proof ( 57% )
This whisky is rich sherry colour and has been bottled without chillfiltering.
Named after the old Imperial measure which followed a tradition established when skeptical sailors, who wanted to ensure their rum rations had not been watered down mixed spirit with gunpowder. If the mixture ignited, its strength was “proved”!
![]() |
Nose: Sweet sherry frutiness. Apples and a sweet sugary something … rum! Dark chocolate and demerara for sure in there. Is this a wolf in sheeps clothing? Palate: WoW! That tongue texture of pure spirit! Rich, sweet rich fruit cake, sherry and spiciness. Finish: Very smooth finish, lovely muted pepperyness peat and smokiness blends together well. Overall: In spite of it’s 57% ABV, this is a lovely dram to nose, sip and savour. Excellent dramming to be had here. Most people on the night panged for a roaring open fire to sip this by! |
Tasting Notes – Benromach Organic ( 43% )
Matured in virgin oak casks giving this dram a pale amber colour.
Certified Organic from start to finish and meeting rigorous UK Soil Association standards for growing the ingredients, distillation, maturation and bottling. Unique on launch in 2006, it is still very rare today.
![]() |
Nose: Strongly coconut with apples and oranges. Very fresh and ‘new’. There’s hints of chinese tea in there as well. Palate: Sugary pears, pineapple and coconut, sherbert sweetness with fruity pleasures – so different from the 100! Finish: A short finish – sweet to the end – maybe a slight hint of grapefruit. It gets quite zingy on the tongue though – almost citric acidy. Overall: The freshness of the virgin oak casks gives this dram a vitality and youthfullness that’s unique. Soft, fruity flavours abound giving this malt a lightness that few other drams can achieve. |
Tasting Notes – Benromach Peat Smoke ( 46% )
Matured in first fill oak Bourbon barrels and a pale straw like colour. The finest Scottish barley is malted with high levels of peat smoke at 67ppm (the phenol level.)
![]() |
Nose: Smell that peat – heaven! Rich peat topped with smokiness and sea spray – take me to the smokery! Interstingly theres a hint of olives in there as well. Palate: Lovely smooth, earthy peat, BBQ & smoke with a little smooth citrus. Finish: Peppery, smokey finish coupled with smooth fruit. Overall: Not as overpowering as you’d think in the peat department. Just very nicely done! A lovely dram. |
My Favourite On The Night
My Favourite On The Night: Benromach 100 Proof – just an awesome dram – amazingly low price point as well!
It was Very closely followed by the Peat Smoke. I love a peat dram so it was a slightly painful decision to put the 100 before it but it just goes to show how good the 100 is!
Four different drams, four completely different tastes. An amazing feat and one which should ensure that there’s a Benromach to suit everyones palate!
Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening.
And of course, the team at Benromach, for sending the samples and without whom!

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Launches New Limited Edition Gift Packs For Christmas!
The Glenlivet has today unveiled a new limited edition gift pack series, aimed to increase on-shelf appeal for its 12 Year Old expression during the pre-Christmas gifting season.
Created in partnership with Master Typographer Alan Kitching, the bold new packaging highlights The Glenlivet’s dedication to crafted quality and brings to life the heritage of the definitive Speyside malt.
The gifting series, which features specially-commissioned letter press artwork by Kitching, an appointed royal designer, includes The Glenlivet 12 Year Old (70cl), as well as two value added packs: one with two branded glasses and a second with 5cl miniature bottles of the 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve and 18 Year Old expressions.
Each of the value added packs contains a booklet detailing The Glenlivet’s brand story and the partnership with Kitching, which was inspired by the shared tradition, craftsmanship and skill found in both the art of letter press printing and the creation of quality, single malt whisky.
The story of The Glenlivet, which started in 1824 when George Smith founded the first licensed distillery in the parish of Glenlivet, is explored on the packaging alongside references to its rich heritage. These include King George IV’s request for “Glenlivet” by name in 1822, together with other examples of how this renowned single malt set the standard of quality and craftsmanship that went on to define the Speyside style of whisky.
Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director of The Glenlivet, comments: “The Glenlivet has worked with Alan Kitching to create a design for our flagship expression that is both bold and eye-catching; something that will stand out this Christmas while also highlighting some of the key moments in the brand’s inspiring history.
“Letterpress printing is a traditional technique which mirrors the time-honoured craftsmanship of The Glenlivet. We have then presented the prints in an eye-catching way on pack, resulting in a contemporary gift that we anticipate will appeal to whisky fans.”

Glenmorangie / Taghta Country: Scotland Region: Highlands Age: Strength: 46%. Summary: Colour: Burnt Ochre. Nose: Curiously nutty and salty at full strength, reminding you of brazil nuts embedded in toffee, hints of linseed oil, and some savoury cured ham. A splash of water opens up the whisky, bringing into play a burst of aged balsamic vinegar, dried fruits, tangy-orange, and a gentle reminder of Christmas incense and spice. Taste: The texture is oily and viscous, with a delicious primary flavour of caramelised orange and lemon, plump sultanas, a hint of brown sugar, but then a wave of salty, briny notes – olives, salted cashew nuts and some nice, toasty oak flavours, like walnut and leather. The long aftertaste is rich, mellow and soothing, with flavours of toffee, caramel, chocolate and dates. |

Ballantine’s Brings History To Life With New Limited Edition Packs For Christmas 2014!
Ballantine’s has unveiled a unique selection of limited edition gift packs for its Finest and 12 Year Old expressions, each of which brings to life a story which delves into the history, heritage and craftsmanship of the Ballantine’s brand.
Having recently commissioned a historian to trace the history of Ballantine’s from the early times of its founder, George Ballantine, the design of the two new Ballantine’s Finest gift packs is inspired by one particularly engaging story, which captures the theory behind the square-shaped design of the bottle itself.
‘The Briefcase Story Edition’ explores the unusual shape of the iconic Finest bottle, which some say was created so that American socialites could hide the whisky easily in their briefcases during the years of prohibition, should the cops come calling. Others suggest that it’s the perfect shape for a salesman to hold two bottles in his briefcase, one to show to a client and another for perhaps celebrating the achievement of a personal sales target?
These interesting packs are available in two styles; the 2014 Briefcase Tin is shaped in the style of a classic briefcase and includes eye-catching effects such as authentic metallic corner protections, to draw attention amongst more mature whisky enthusiasts.
For those who prefer a more contemporary style, the 2014 Briefcase Zip is equally striking, boldly featuring materials such as satin lycra, and modern zip grips that imitate a padlock and key.
The third seasonal gift pack began with the specialness of the Ballantine’s 12 Year Old – its preciousness and the need for it to be kept in a safe place, where one would keep his valuables. The Safe Limited Edition represents a vintage safe which features a combination dial and embossed silver elements; a visual manifestation of the rich, smooth and complex 12 Year Old blend, formed of many flavours that seduce the senses and invite the customer to unlock the unique flavour combination.
One can also imagine George Ballantine having a large, solid safe in his office, guarding his valuable recipes and notes, relating to a lifetime’s commitment to his passion around whisky and what has become the highly cherished Ballantine’s.
Peter Moore, Global Brand Director for Ballantine’s, comments: “We are excited to launch these intriguing limited editions, which will appeal to both Ballantine’s fans and whisky collectors. We wanted to share the richness of the Ballantine’s story on these innovative packs, and hope that this unique approach helps retailers to capture sales during the competitive festive season.”
