The Arran Whisky Tweet Tasting!

April 23, 2015 by Gary 2 Comments

Island Wonders From Arran!

Island Wonders From Arran!

Island Wonders From Arran!

Wednesday nights Tweet Tasting ably demonstrated the rise and rise of Arran Whisky and their range of whiskies which included the release of their first 18 year old and the release of White Stag – their members only dram.

The event was once again hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire and over two hours we got the opportunity to sample four malts from this Island powerhouse.

The malts sampled were:-

  • Arran Whisky Sauternes Finish
  • Arran Whisky 18 Year Old
  • Arran Whisky Bourbon Cask
  • Arran Whisky White Stag

You can catch up on what all the tasters had to say by searching for the hash tag #ArranWhisky on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Arran Whisky Sauternes Finish ( 50% )

Matured in traditional oak casks for approximately 8 years, The Arran Single Malt was finished in a selection of Sauternes wine casks sourced from an artisan producer of this iconic Bordeaux sweet white wine.

Master Distiller, James MacTaggart, has carefully monitored this period of secondary maturation to ensure the perfect balance is struck between the Sauternes casks and the intrinsic sweet-fruity character of The Arran Malt.

Nose: Sweet n’ fruity! Honey & caramel with hint of melon and pineapple. Rich orange and spice comes thru later – nice!

Palate: Creamy mouthfeel, lovely rich orange and honey hits you straight away coupled with Xmas fruit cake like sweetness.

Finish: A dry, tanin finish laden with spice. Hints of tobacco & grapefruit.

Overall: At 50% it sure packs a punch – strong and powerful – but in a sweet way!

Tasting Notes – Arran Whisky 18 Year Old ( 46% )

The first ever official 18 year-old in the Arran Malt range!

Produced from un-peated malted barley and matured in a selection of the finest ex-Sherry casks this whisky has not been artificially coloured and has not been chill-filtered at bottling thus retaining the full range of aromas and flavours which typify this unique Island Single Malt.

This is the final bottling in a trilogy of 16, 17 & 18 year-old Arran Malts which celebrated the countdown to this first official release of The Arran Malt as an 18 year-old.

Only 9,000 bottles of The Arran Malt 18 Years Old have been released worldwide.

Nose: Not as sweet on the nose initially but then creamy vanilla comes thru. Waxy with a background of woodiness. It gets sweeter and sweeter in the glass – heady aromas of stewed apples with a slight hint of spice.

Palate: Less oily, thinner than the Sauternes. Heavy with pineapple, mango, kiwi & other tropical goodies! Richly balanced cakey sweetness with a little licourice.

Finish: Short, smooth finish. There’s a lovely sweetness to this dram that ends with a spicy, pepper combo – Exquisite!

Overall: This is going to be / should be a popular dram – congrats to the team at Arran – an excellent conclusion to the trilogy!

Tasting Notes – Arran Whisky Bourbon Cask ( 55.3% )

Part of Arran Whiskies Premium Cask Selection this particular batch has now, unfortunately, sold out. But there are other batches available to help satisfy us!

Nose: The Arran signature caramel, fudge sweetness is still there joined by yummy wood! Waxy, woody & charred – heaven! There’s also fruity, lilt-like aromas comin’ thru with continued nosing.

Palate: Fizzy, mango and pineapple with a kick-ass hit to it! Thick, rich and sweet – Amazing!

Finish: Long, smooth finish with strength aplenty – sweet and spicy to the last!

Overall: Even though it’s a 55%+ the alcohol burn is very slight and I had my nose well and truly stuck into my nosing glass! Full of character with a morish zest to it.

Tasting Notes – Arran Whisky White Stag ( 54.2% )

At nearly 18yrs this non-chill filtered single sherry cask was the first bottling chosen by the Arranwhisky White Stag tasting panel and will be launching in June.

Only 214 bottles will be released worldwide and they are available from Arran Whiskies web site.

To become a White Stag member you can sign up for free!

Nose: Quite subtle after the bourbon barnstormer – sweetness and a bit of the bourbon woodiness I think … There’s dark chocolate and coffee as well. Slightly waxy but a perfect balance of subtle sweetness & spice saves the day.

Palate: Intensely sweet and spicy with fizzy tropical fruit explosions! Mango, pineapple – liquid sunshine in a glass!

Finish: Sweet, smooth, peppery finish: sublime …

Overall: A truly gorgeous dram – strong but well balanced – a giver not a taker! Excellent stuff indeed.

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the 4, I think it’s got to be the White Stag closely followed by the Bourbon Cask.

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening!

And of course, Arran Whisky (@ArranWhisky), for sending the samples and without whom! They also have an excellent online shop!

Nose: what a beautiful mix between clean, alluring barley and citrus, mainly clementine’s; a little lavender freshens it up even further;
Taste: just about a perfect impact on delivery; the malts are salivating, the sugars are crisp and clean, the vanilla un-embittered…wow!!!
Finish: here’s the dull bit Glendullan…the oak injects a little natural caramel but a few spices compensate;
Balance: at last! A Glendullan how I normally see it in the blending lab, rather than when tasting bottling’s for the bible. Of late they have been pretty ordinary and hardly representative. This one is much truer to its known quality among pros, mainly due to this crisp malt being presented in decent oak for a change.

Nose: clean with a proud butterscotch tart theme. The barley is still fresh and at times concentrated;
Taste: I defy you to count how many different style of natural toffee you can find on this…; a thin layering of ulmo honey sits well with the maple syrup and persistent malt;
Finish: a little spiced cocoa on the fading barley sugar;
Balance: given the right cask, shows what a lovely malt this distillery is capable of producing. Engaging and irresistible.

Nose: plenty of Kentucky at work here with the liquorice and hickory giving depth to the vanilla. The barley is not outdone, though…;
Taste: the oak yoke is discarded on delivery and the vbarley is at full blast;
Finish: just adore those gristy sugars which have somehow survived all these years; some lemon to the late vanilla;
Balance: simple, but so elegant with it!

Nose: apple and pears….with the accent on the pears;
Taste: gets the sugars in early and, better still, makes them of a gristy type. Which means that the ever-growing oak is comfortably contained and the complexity increases….; the barley is juicy despite the years and the spices early on;
Finish: some very clever oils ensure a dessert feel to the finale which includes some sugary diced coconut;
Balance: creamy, complex and luxurious. Both well-made and matured.

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Launches New Limited Edition Gift Packs For Christmas!

December 10, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet 12YO Limited Edition Range

The Glenlivet 12YO Limited Edition Range

The Glenlivet has today unveiled a new limited edition gift pack series, aimed to increase on-shelf appeal for its 12 Year Old expression during the pre-Christmas gifting season.
Created in partnership with Master Typographer Alan Kitching, the bold new packaging highlights The Glenlivet’s dedication to crafted quality and brings to life the heritage of the definitive Speyside malt.

The gifting series, which features specially-commissioned letter press artwork by Kitching, an appointed royal designer, includes The Glenlivet 12 Year Old (70cl), as well as two value added packs: one with two branded glasses and a second with 5cl miniature bottles of the 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve and 18 Year Old expressions.

Each of the value added packs contains a booklet detailing The Glenlivet’s brand story and the partnership with Kitching, which was inspired by the shared tradition, craftsmanship and skill found in both the art of letter press printing and the creation of quality, single malt whisky.

The story of The Glenlivet, which started in 1824 when George Smith founded the first licensed distillery in the parish of Glenlivet, is explored on the packaging alongside references to its rich heritage. These include King George IV’s request for “Glenlivet” by name in 1822, together with other examples of how this renowned single malt set the standard of quality and craftsmanship that went on to define the Speyside style of whisky.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director of The Glenlivet, comments: “The Glenlivet has worked with Alan Kitching to create a design for our flagship expression that is both bold and eye-catching; something that will stand out this Christmas while also highlighting some of the key moments in the brand’s inspiring history.

“Letterpress printing is a traditional technique which mirrors the time-honoured craftsmanship of The Glenlivet. We have then presented the prints in an eye-catching way on pack, resulting in a contemporary gift that we anticipate will appeal to whisky fans.”

Ancnoc / 18 Year Old Single Malt

Ancnoc / 18 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 18 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: The anCnoc 18 Year Old has matured in Spanish oak ex-sherry casks and American oak ex-bourbon barrels and has been bottled in its most natural form, neither chill-filtered nor coloured.  As a result this dram may develop a light haze with the addition of water or if kept at a cold temperature. This haze is a natural characteristic of whisky that is non chill-filtered.
Colour: Bronzed amber.
Nose: Gentle spices and intense sweetness of dried fruits are topped with chocolate, ripe oranges and oiled leather.
Taste: Full-bodied and bold, aromatic spices, fruit loaf and candied lemon are followed by a surge of vanilla, honey and caramel. The finish transforms from peppery and hot to deliciously sweet and smooth.

Elijah Craig / 12-year-old / Small Batch Bourbon

Elijah Craig / 12-year-old / Small Batch Bourbon
Country: American   Region: American
Age: 12 Years Old   Strength: 47%
Summary: Elijah Craig 12-Year-Old is a true Small Batch premium Bourbon, and had that distinction before the term even existed.
Bottled exclusively from a dumping of 70 barrels or less, the brand carries the name of the Rev. Elijah Craig, the man who discovered the method of making true Kentucky Bourbon when he stored his wares in barrels that had been charred in a fire.
Elijah Craig is critically acclaimed. It was awarded a “Double Gold Medal” at both the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and WSWA Tasting Competition, and whiskey expert and author Jim Murray calls it “unquestionably one of the great Bourbons.” It has twice been awarded “Best of the Best” from Whisky Magazine.

Glenfarclas / 10 Year Old Single Malt

Glenfarclas / 10 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 10 Year Old   Strength: 40%
Summary: Colour: Vibrant straw-gold.
Nose: Tempting sherry-sweet malty tones combine with delicate smokiness, releasing subtle spices. Warming the glass reveals honey, vanilla and pear drops.
Flavour: Delicately light, with a mouth-watering combination of maltiness, smokiness and sherry sweetness. Hints of dried fruit, vanilla, cinnamon and cloves tempt the taste buds further.
Finish: Long, smooth and spicy, with a delicious, yet delicate, lingering smokiness.
Glenfarclas / One Family / Six Generations: Since 1865 Glenfarclas has been owned and managed by just one family, the Grants of Glenfarclas. On the 8th of June 1865 John Grant acquired the tenancy for the Rechlerich Farm and as part of the transaction purchased the Glenfarclas Distillery for £511.19S.0d.
To this day Glenfarclas is one of only a few distilleries in Scotland to remain family owned and managed. Now in the hands of the fifth and sixth generation of the family, the Grants remain committed to the vision of creating the best quality Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky, in the traditional Speyside style.

Glenfarclas / 105 Cask Strength

Glenfarclas / 105 Cask Strength
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength: 60%
Summary: Colour: Deep peaty-gold.
Nose: Complex, oaky, apples and pears, and a tempting dark toffee sweetness.
Flavour: Dry and assertive, develops quickly to reveal a rich spiciness, combined with a hint of oak and sherried fruit.
Finish: Amazingly smooth for the strength; wonderfully warming and with a lingering smokiness, yet very rounded.
Comment: A great whisky holding all the flavours of all the Glenfarclas in one glass. Being so warming, this is the perfect Hogmanay dram. Don’t be afraid of the strength and order a 210, if you dare!
The smoothness makes the 105 drinkable at cask strength, but I suggest adding a little water to fully explore its great depth.

Age: 18 Year Old   Strength: 57.9%
Summary: Colour: Rich Amber.
Nose: Rich sweet, malty almost like a chocoalte covered digestive. Some dried fruit present, sultanas and raisins.
Flavour: 1994 is a fantastic vintage for Glenfarclas. This dram although not as sweet on the palate as on the nose, has dry coffee bitterness, rich dark chocolate also very much present.
Finish: One of the longest finishies I have ever experienced in a whisky. A truly moreish whisky (you will have more!).

Dalmore / 18 Year Old Single Malt

Dalmore / 18 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 18 Year Old   Strength: 43%
Summary: The Dalmore Distillery has been producing exceptional single malt whisky since 1839 and, for almost a century, was owned by the Clan Mackenzie. The clan’s defining influence on the distillery is still evident to this day, with the iconic royal stag’s antlers – taken from the Mackenzie family crest – adorning each and every bottle of The Dalmore. Located on the northern shores of the Firth of Cromarty, deep in the spectacular Scottish Highlands, the distillery is perfectly placed to take advantage of a feast of natural resources: from the waters of Loch Morie, found high in the hills overlooking the distillery, to the golden barley of the rich coastal soils of the Black Isle. Being sited at sea level is critically important. Enveloped by the salt air, the sea-facing traditional dunnage warehouses provide the ideal conditions for maturation. Time, different cask types, varying sizes, and warehouse conditions can all influence the maturity of a single malt. For this Dalmore, 15 years in bespoke Matusalem, Apostoles and Amoroso sherry butts from Jerez de la Frontera have been elemental. The redolence of these vessels delivers the perfect balance between spirit, wood and maturity. Tasting Notes: potent and robust, this expression delivers a rich and aromatic taste experience. A rich and aromatic heart full of dried spices, cloves, cinnamon and ginger with a concentrated citrus mouth-feel to tantalise your tongue and an abundant aftertaste of spice to reward the palate.
