Laphroaig Live 2015!

September 25, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Laphroaig is this year celebrating 200 years!

Laphroaig is this year celebrating 200 years!

Laphroaig Live has a lot to celebrate this year. Apart from the anticipated showcase of new expressions they are also celebrating their 200th. birthday.

Apart from that, the event also featured an appearance by ‘Highlander’ actor Sam Heughan who, if Twitter is to be believed, proved to be very popular indeed!

The drams sampled for this years event were:-

  • Laphroaig 15 Year Old
  • Laphroaig Cairdeas 2015
  • Laphroaig 21 Year Old
  • Laphroaig 32 Year Old

Sampling the whiskies was amongst others, John Campbell – Laphroaig’s distillery manager, Emma Andersson – Editor of one of the world’s most respected whisky magazines Allt Om Whisky and Bernhard Schafer – whisky journalist and Master Of The Quiach.

The one hour online show had a little bit for everyone. There was music, Sam Heughan, a flaky live link to New York (they could have left that out really), Sam Heughan, whisky sampling and some nice views of the distillery and some smoking peat. Oh and did I mention Sam Heughan was there?

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #laphroaiglive on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Laphroaig 15 Year Old (43%)

The 15 year old was last commercially produced in 2008 after being superseded by the 18 year old. Since then it’s gathered an iconic status.

Nose: Rich fruit and the unmistakable aromas of peat and smoke abound.

Palate: Smokey sweetness with a hint of toffee and vanilla.

Finish: Peppery spice and a long smokey finish top this dram off perfectly.

Overall: A fine dram. Rounded and well finished with that morish quality that keeps you sipping!

Tasting Notes – Laphroaig Cairdeas 2015 (51%)

This whisky is John’s interpretation of how Laphroaig would have been produced at the distillery 200 years ago. Distilled using only smaller stills and using cold smoked peat it is non-chill filtered and bottled without colouring.

Nose: Some real fruitiness hits you with this dram. The smokiness is very faint and there’s even a trace of mint!

Palate: Strong and full bodied with a fruity sweetness. The peat is well to the fore with this dram and there’s also a little liquorice.

Finish: Smooth, short finish with a dry smokiness to it.

Overall: A tougher dram than the 15yo – very traditional and a whisky that must have kept the islanders toasty and warm 200 years ago!

Tasting Notes – Laphroaig 21 Year Old (48.4%)

A limited edition distilled in 1993 and matured in a mix of barrels to intensify it’s flavours. It is non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Nose: Sweet vanilla and sugary fruits. Interesting that the signature peatiness is absent.

Palate: Lovely and sweet with a hint of fruit. A smooth dram.

Finish: Long smooth finish with a welcome spiciness to balance the sweet flavours. There’s some dry tobacco in there as well.

Overall: A cultured Laphroaig that loses a lot of it’s traditional strong flavours. Not that this is a negative, more of an alternative!

Tasting Notes – Laphroaig 32 Year Old (46.7%)

Only 6000 bottles of this expression have been produced – a very rare Laphroaig indeed! John also mentioned that there are some 34 yr old whiskies in there as well. Not surprisingly, this dram was the nights most anticipated!

Nose: Rich, sweet sherry, creamy vanilla, toasted almonds.

Palate: Tropical fruits abound with vanilla toffee

Finish: Dry, slightly spicy, rich and full bodied.

Overall: Once again, very muted in the smoke n’ peat department – this seems to be the destiny of older Laphroaigs.

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the four, I think it’s got to be the Laphroaig 15 Year Old.
Yeah, I could go for the 32 year old but most people will never get the chance to sample it (and I probably never will again!)
For me, the 15 has everything you expct from a Laphroaig and the reason everyone heads for the dram in the first place. Peat, smoke, vanilla and a warm fireside feeling!

Many thanks to Laphroaig for sending the samples and without whom!

Laphroaig is available to buy from these Whisky Merchants:-

Ballantine’s All Set For An ‘Artistic’ Christmas!

September 25, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ballantine's 12 Tin - Artist Series

Ballantine’s 12 Tin – Artist Series

Ballantine’s has unveiled a unique range of three limited edition gift packs exclusively designed for the brand by renowned artist Leif Podhajsky ahead of Christmas 2015. The striking new packs are the first launch in the ‘Artist Series’, an initiative that will see Ballantine’s collaborate with a different creative talent every year.

Leif Podhajsky has created some of the most distinctive and beautiful album artwork of the last decade and music fans will instantly recognise his sonically-inspired landscapes inspired by the natural world. Staying true to his creative origins, the collaboration with Ballantine’s as part of the Artist Series has allowed Podhajsky to take inspiration from the award-winning Scotch whisky as well as the stunning, natural landscapes of Scotland, resulting in three beautiful limited edition designs.

Ballantine's Finest Tin - Artist Series

Ballantine’s Finest Tin – Artist Series

Ballantine's Finest Sleeve - Artist Series

Ballantine’s Finest Sleeve – Artist Series

Each distinctive gift pack design references the Ballantine’s story in separate ways. The Ballantine’s Finest Tin captures the movement of the liquid, inspired by the complexity, depth and gold colour of this renowned whisky blend. The Ballantine’s Neoprene Finest Sleeve takes inspiration from two of the most vital and natural elements involved in the whisky production process: fire and water. The Ballantine’s 12 Year Old Tin is an abstract interpretation of Scotland’s unique scenery, capturing the light of the sky, the rugged nature of Scotland’s Highlands region and the country’s flowing streams.

Before starting on the designs for Ballantine’s I spent time in Scotland exploring the wild, natural landscapes and understanding the whisky-making process. Immersing myself in the subject’s culture is how I begin when designing album cover artwork. From this point, images start to form organically. The Ballantine’s ‘Artist Series’ partnership was an extremely rewarding project to work on, giving me complete creative freedom and allowing me to stay true to my own artistic style.
– Leif Podhajsky: Artist

At Ballantine’s we are passionate about supporting artists that share the ethos of staying true to themselves. It has been a great pleasure to work with an artist as creative, distinctive and as innovative as Leif on our inaugural partnership for the Artist Series.

Providing excellent on-shelf standout thanks to his eye-catching designs, the limited editions present a modern take on our celebrated Ballantine’s whisky, so we are certain they will be a must have for whisky and art connoisseurs alike.
– Peter Moore: Global Brand Director for Ballantine’s

The Ballantine’s Artist Series Limited Edition Gift Packs will be available globally from the end of October at the same price as Ballantine’s Finest and Ballantine’s 12 Year Old.

Richard Paterson Celebrates 45 year Milestone!

September 24, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Richard became a Master Distiller at the age of just 26

Richard became a Master Distiller at the age of just 26

Richard Paterson, one of the world’s most loved whisky experts, has achieved yet another milestone in his illustrious career, as he celebrates 45 years in the whisky industry.

Richard’s unwavering dedication to whisky began when he followed his Grandfather and Father into the industry. Richard honed his craft at A. Gillies & Company Whisky Blenders & Brokers where he worked as a production assistant, learning the art of whisky distilling and blending. He then joined Whyte & Mackay, becoming their Master Distiller at the age of just 26.

Over the last 45 years his innate ability to assess and taste whisky has earned him the nickname of ‘The Nose’. He has a reputation as both an exceptional whisky creator and an illustrious showman. He is loved by whisky fans the world over and has been responsible for creating some of the world’s most iconic whiskies such as The Dalmore Trinitas, the Mackinlay’s Shackleton blend and of course Whyte & Mackay Blended Scotch.

Richard’s contribution to Whyte & Mackay and indeed the whisky industry as a whole over the last 45 years has been phenomenal. His commitment and passion never ceases to amaze me and I can confidently say, on behalf of the team at Whyte & Mackay, the industry and of course all of the whisky aficionados out there , that we all look forward to working with him for many years to come.
– Bryan Donaghey: CEO of Whyte & Mackay

Disaronno Reserva: Disaronno with a bespoke blend of Scottish malt whisky

September 24, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Only 10,000 bottles will be produced worldwide ...

Only 10,000 bottles will be produced worldwide …

Disaronno has added a very exclusive addition to its portfolio, Disaronno Riserva; a unique blend of Scottish whisky and Disaronno – aged in Marsala barrels from the Cantine Florio in Marsala, Sicily.

Produced by Augusto Reina, CEO of Illva Saronno, Disaronno Riserva is the result of an innovative and exciting idea created from a very unique combination; blended scotch whisky made from a select mix of different malts, and the aromatic notes of Disaronno; almond, toasted hazelnut and burnt honey.

The journey began in Speyside in the Scottish Highlands, known for producing Scotland’s lightest, sweetest single malts, where Mr Reina hand selected the perfect blend of whiskys to complement the exquisite flavours of Disaronno. On route back to Italy, the liqueur passes through Saronno, where the historical headquarters of Illva Saronno lie and Disaronno is produced. The final destination is the Cantine Florio winery; Sicily’s oldest and most beautiful winery, where the Riserva is then aged in old wooden Marsala casks dating back to 1938.

The result is an initially sweet touch of spice softened by light hints of vanilla-almond, with luscious fruity overtones and a finish that is peppery, recalling dried fruit with a touch of intriguing Madeira. It is perfect served neat, or on the rocks.

The Disaronno Riserva packaging takes inspiration from the iconic Disaronno bottle, but with a cleaner and more refined outline, and comes packaged in a beautiful sleek black wooden case. Only 10,000 bottles will be produced worldwide, and will be available from a selection of handpicked luxury retailers across the globe at an RRP of £250; definitely one for the connoisseurs.

I am honoured to present Disaronno Riserva It’s a product that is deeply rooted in the company’s ethos; research and innovation have always been the guiding principles in managing the family business, and it is these exact values that have made this new product truly unique.

To make the product distinctive I decided to focus on how, and where it was created; being aged in the oak barrels Cantine Florio, brings it all back to the long standing history of the company. It has all come full circle.
– Augusto Reina: CEO of Illva

JAMESON CASKMATES

JAMESON CASKMATES

Jameson has announced the global release of Jameson Caskmates, following a successful limited run in Ireland last year. Created by the Midleton Distillery in collaboration with micro-brewer, Franciscan Well Brewery in Cork, Jameson Caskmates offers a new taste experience that will satisfy the appetite of whiskey enthusiasts, Jameson drinkers and craft beer fans.

Jameson Caskmates is available from September 2015

Jameson Caskmates is available from September 2015

The Jameson Caskmates story began back in 2013, when Jameson Master Distiller, Brian Nation and Master of Whiskey Science, Dave Quinn, first met Franciscan Well Founder and Head Brewer, Shane Long, in a Cork bar. The Jameson Masters agreed to loan some Jameson casks to the brewery to discover their influence on Irish stout and when the stout-seasoned barrels were returned to the Midleton Distillery, Dave Quinn re-filled them with Jameson Irish whiskey. Over time, the maturation resulted in a new taste sensation: Jameson Caskmates.

The product of curiosity, collaboration and innovation, Jameson Caskmates retains the triple-distilled smoothness of Jameson Original, while adopting additional notes of coffee, cocoa, butterscotch and gentle hints of hops.

The release is set to tap into the existing consumer appetite for craft beer and whiskey, as it fuses the two categories and showcases exceptional versatility; the result can be served neat, on the rocks, as a beer pairing and in beer cocktails. The tag line behind the creative, ‘Triple distilled, once stouted’, reinforces the union of whiskey and beer while injecting the wit and personality of the Jameson brand to further enhance its appeal to millennial consumers.

When the stout-seasoned Jameson barrels arrived back at Midleton from Franciscan Well, curiosity got the better of us and we experimented by maturing our Jameson Irish whiskey in the casks.

We found that after around six months, the perfect balance of flavor was achieved and we couldn’t be happier with the results; Jameson Caskmates retains all the smoothness of triple-distilled Jameson with added cocoa, coffee and butterscotch notes from the stout barrels. We are thrilled that the rest of the world is getting the chance to enjoy this Irish gem!
– Dave Quinn: Master of Whiskey Science at the Midleton Distillery

Jameson and stout are no strangers behind the bar, but for the first time ever they have come together to create our latest innovation, Jameson Caskmates. The story goes right to our heart in Cork, where our Midleton Distillery and the Franciscan Well Brewery are located, and represents what we are most passionate about: Irish craftsmanship, collaboration and innovation.

With Jameson Caskmates, we hope to surprise and delight existing Jameson drinkers by providing them with an authentic, new whiskey experience, as well as to recruit craft beer fans globally to the Irish whiskey category.
– Brendan Buckley: Global Innovation Director at Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard

Bottled at 40% ABV, Jameson Caskmates is available from September 2015.

Jameson Caskmates Tasting Notes, by Master Distiller Brian Nation

Nose: The initial aroma of freshly mown hay is complemented by a crisp orchard fruit character, green apples and pears along with a twist of lime zest. Mild pot still spices appear, deepening from green tea to hazelnut and milk chocolate. The lingering hop influence combines effortlessly with toasted oak and barley grains to form a solid base.

Taste: As expected, there is the initial sweet mouth coating typical of the Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey inclusion. Then the effect of the beer cask finish becomes apparent with the subtle touch of hops and cocoa beans. Some marzipan and charred oak add to the complexity.

Finish: Long and sweet with milk chocolate and butterscotch.

Age:

70cl

Summary: At Glenglassaugh, in addition to the traditional production, they also produce a very limited quantity of whisky using richly peated malted barley as the cereal varietal. The malted barley has been dried in the traditional way, over peat infused kilns, giving the whisky its unique smoky flavour. Glenglassaugh ‘Torfa’, with its peaty, phenolic nature, is a unique expression, and is quite different to the usual style of whisky produced in the Highlands. Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside. Unit: 70cl ABV: 50%. Cask Formula: Fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Peat level is 20 ppm. Appearance: Gleaming yellow gold. Nose: Vivid, sweet, sooty campfire smoke and sea air infuses zest of lime, apricot jam and ripe soft fruits; all gently warmed by hints of stem ginger and cracked black pepper. Palate: An eloquent, sweet coastal peat smoke engulfs candied peel over melon, pineapple and roasted red apples. Oat biscuits, hints of heather honey and a gentle cigar box spice all combine to give a terrific balance to the expressive smoky character. 70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Highlands.
Unit: 70cl.
ABV: 46%.
The 6th release from Glenmorangie's award-winning Private Edition, Tùsail is the product of a carefully-selected parcel of Maris Otter barley, floor-malted by hand using traditional techniques, and non chill-filtered.
A rich winter variety of barley first introduced in 1965, Maris Otter was bred specifically to meet the demand for a high quality brewing malt and recognized for its ability to impart rich, rustic malty flavours. Now used only by a select few who continue, like Glenmorangie, to uphold an ethos of sacrificing yield for quality by using only the finest ingredients, the result is a whisky celebrating the variety’s renowned taste profile.
Aroma: Deep earthy, robust aromas of malty, biscuity tones, with a backbone of nut toffee.
Taste: A rich, rustic profile of nut toffee, sweet barley malt, ginger, cinnamon, and dates in molasses complements more familiar Glenmorangie notes of peaches, oranges and smoked pears.
Finish: Tùsail lingers on with a mouth-coating finish.

It has been aged in a Spanish oak sherry cask from Pedro Domecq, the oldest Bodega in Jerez. Specially selected by Distillery Manager Bobby Anderson, this limited edition bottling of just one cask is now available exclusively to members of Clan Speyburn.

Ardbeg / Galileo
Ardbeg / Galileo

£ 225.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age:
Strength: 49.%

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Islay.
ABV: 49%
Bottle Size: 70cl.
So why call it Galileo you ask? Story goes that Ardbeg sent some whisky into space (to test how whisky matures in zero gravity), and this bottle is all we got… Or something like that. It’s not really important what was sent into space, and why (PR, I guess), but this special release is vintage 1999, and is quite yummy. This is a 12 year old whisky (which is a nice change from the 10 or NAS we’re used to getting from Ardbeg), and this time the it has been matured both in the conventional ex-Bourbon casks and both in ex-Marsala wine casks (Essentially a sweet wine made in Sicily, Italy), which should make it quite sweet and fruity. Peat and sweet wine tend to go well together (We’ve seen that in many other Islay whiskies, from Ardbeg, and other distilleries) , and this is a good example IMHO.
Nose: nice and smooth with sweet sugared and salted nuts, some fruit too: tangerine and a touch of pineapple. Sweet peat with leather tar and strawberry flavored Bamba (Israelis, you duped know what I’m talking about here). Some plums and date paste. Seaweed. Very nice sweet salty interplay here.
Palate: starts peaty and fruity with orchard fruit , peat and pepper as well as sweet marinated pork belly. Pepper, sweet cinnamon rolls! Quite creamy. There are quite some tannins and burnt sugar / caramel and salty sugared peanuts.
Finish: salty sweet bacon. Tar. Caramel and creamy achy smoky notes.
Conclusion: This is a tasty dram! Really liked it, especially for the sweet / salty / bamba like flavours, fruitiness, and balance. The peat and wine really work well, it’s not very peaty, and more balanced, with the nose a tad better than the palate, but still a worthy 12 yo Ardbeg which is different than the mainstream Ardbegs. Easy drinking, while preserving the Islay touch. Worthwhile if you can get a bottle for a decent price.
Tasting Notes: Whisky Israel.

Ardbeg / Ardbog
Ardbeg / Ardbog

£ 150.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age:
Strength: 42.1%
70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Islay.
ABV: 42.1%.
Unit: 70cl.
Aroma: Deep, enticing waves of pecan nuts, salty toffee & caramels combine with fudge, leather and with a distinct whiff of herbs, lavender and violets. The smoke is soft and aromatic, and is interwoven with salty, savoury notes, such as Iberico ham and olives.
The addition of water brings forth herbal, perfumed notes, smoked rhubarb, aged balsamic vinegar and some salty, ‘graphite’ notes reminding you of the Manzanilla cask element.
Taste: A full, oily/tingly mouth feel leads into a powerful, salty, savoury burst of flavours including salted cashews and peanuts, clove, aniseed flavoured toffee, green olives and a curious hint of anchovy.
Finish: A long, lingering aftertaste, in which the classic Ardbeg sweetness (like a hint of maple syrup) is kept in check by oak tannins, clove and coffee grounds.

Ardbeg / Supernova Committee Edition 2014
Ardbeg / Supernova Committee Edition 2014

£ 395.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age:
Strength: 55.%
70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Islay.
ABV: 55%
Unit: 70cl
The whisky world has been watching, waiting, anticipating. And salivating. Finally, Supernova is back and it has evolved. The presence of sherry-matured stock has imparted an extra dimension, creating a deeper richness… firing up the spiciness…. and boosting the sweetness. But it’s still one of the peatiest Ardbegs on earth.
Aroma: The first sniff instantly transports you into orbit, with the intense zestiness of smoked lemons and pears, lemongrass and pine needles, embedded in a deep, resinous, sticky waxy base.
This initial, tangy vapour trails off, bringing in the tranquil whiff of salty, briny, seaweed-covered shores. More solid scents are then discovered, with the mineral-like tone of flint and granite, sooty smoke and a fresh, mentholic stab of peppermint.
Water droplets trigger a metaphorical smoke bomb, with dense layers of billowing, aromatic smoke, peaty earth and the vegetal sharpness of heater root. Finally, a curious, sharp-sweet burst of delicious applewood smoked cheese is encountered
Taste: With the first sip, a gentle warmth ignites and builds until the sensation becomes distinctively peppery, spicy and electric. The onslaught of flavour comes in at warp speet as powerful peppermint, antiseptic lozenges and other familiar, medicinal tones orbit around Supernova's immense, peaty core.
Dark, dark birch tar intermingles with spicy-sweet chilli flavoured chocolates, while the entire mouth and palate are coated in luscious linseed oil
Finish: The velocity increases, until it is almost off the scale, with rich flavours of tar, creosote, briar wood, spicy tobacco and liquorice root. The aftertaste simply disappears into infinity, such is its length.

Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age:
Strength: 46.%

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Islay.
ABV: 46%
Age: 21 Years Old.

This American-oak-aged Bruichladdich has been further matured in casks that previously contained the lush sweet white wines of two of the greatest chateaux of Barsac and Sauternes.
Character: A sensuous, decadent and flirtatious whisky with more than a hint of forbidden fruit.
Colour: Brilliant copper/ hazelnut/ wild honeycomb/ antique gold.
Nose: The first aromatics to rise are of soft ripe green fruits – papaya, plump green grapes, melon and pear with a drift on anise and cinnamon together with that distinctive note of mint imperials. This is followed by honeysuckle and orange blossom bringing that floral connection which is a Bruichladdich vintage keynote. Sweet and nutty flavours evolve; notes of candied almonds and nougat.
Palate: On the palate it is splendidly decadent and it’s here that the sweet biscuit flavours of barley shine in total harmony with creamy toffee, allowing the toasted oaks to work their magic. The mid-palate is opulent, caressing & enthralling the taste buds. The viscosity of the world’s greatest Sauternes is an enchantress that drives you to distraction. This is class in a glass, elegant, sophisticated, full bodied and succulently sweet. The texture is silky smooth, warm and mellow with the sauternes casks highlighting the natural beauty of an unpeated Islay single malt whisky.
Finish: It’s long and never falters; the flavours don’t fade at all due to its incredible texture. What a unique experience it’s been.
Mood: Decadent and flirtatious.

THIS BOTTLING COMES FROM AN INCREASINGLY RARE PARCEL OF SUPREME OLOROSO SHERRY CASKS MATURED IN OUR WAREHOUSES. IT IS THE GLORIOUS END OF AN ERA AND IS UNLIKELY TO BE REPEATED FOR SOME TIME.
It was 18th and 19th century wars with France that spawned the demand for Sherry. Once bottled in the UK, Sherry casks were readily used by the Scotch whisky industry in the absence of any others. Fresh Oloroso casks will continue to be sourced, but on a very small scale compared to the heady Sherry days of the sixties and before.
This combination of rich Oloroso Sherry influences and a full-term maturation in Islay’s Atlantic marine climate has created Bruichladdich’s richest, most shamelessly decadent and full-bodied whisky to date – an ideal dram for those important reflective, night-cap moments.
Character: Full and mellow, rounded and rich with a unique character that comes only from malts matured full term in Oloroso sherry butts.
Colour: Late afternoon Jerez sunshine.
Nose: Dark butterscotch, cocoa–sprinkled hazelnuts, soft banana, prune syrup, plump dark raisins and Amaretti biscuits all jostle to take centre stage. The nose will also detect a zephyr of salty sea breezes. After the initial fiesta experience has calmed, beautiful soft green fruits emerge bringing lychee, passion fruit, melon and mango along with the sweetness of maltose and barley sugar.
Palate: The full power and passion is best experienced without the addition of water. However, we leave that to you. It is a Grande Reserva or in Gaelic bival arfad – “Absolutely beautiful!”.
Finish: A cultural melody, the wildness of Islay and the warmth of Spain combined in a unification of flavours that is heart-warming and haunting.
Mood: Decadently mellow. Rejoice and give yourself over to the 21 years of life you hold in your hand!.
Slight dent on tin.

Character: A single educational cask, from a rare parcel of Bruichladdich stock.
Colour: Dandelion yellow/ golden honey.
Nose: The scents of ripe green fruits shimmer from the glass like little heat waves on a summer’s day, the cantaloupe melon, peach, apricot and poached pear are just irresistible with just a delicious note of banana dipped in vanilla syrup. This is aromatic fulfilment, you just have to taste it – wait! The aromas just keep coming and with an overture of sweet barley sugar, mature mellow old style honest to goodness whisky, it takes your senses to an olfactory rainbow's end where this pot of golden liquid is awaiting you.

Every taste you experience transcends superbly onto the palate creating some kind of Hebridean hedonistic taste climax. Spiritual serendipity.
Finish: The natural beauty of time & place are evident as you sip this rare whisky, its conclusion, the swansong, the termination of a spirit that is the embodiment of all that we hold dear. Caol Ila / 27 Year Old Hunter Laing Rare Edition

£ 275.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age: 27 Years Old
Strength: 52.2%.

Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angel’s share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see it’s pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. By so doing, they leave in the entire Distillers’ preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish – self evident when you remove the cork. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated.
On the nose, detect a harbourlike quality with an Islay ferry, oily engine room style plus late soft summer tar. The palate opens softly and sweetly spiced, developing to a richly smoked, softly peated character. On the finish, waves of smoke and spices intermingle and run to a hot chilli amd dark chocolate trait plus a late mentholated style.

What is Tun 1401? basically it’s a special vatting of hand picked casks by the Balvenie malt master David Stewart. David selected 10 casks from the entire aging stock at the Balvenie warehouses to be vatted in a very big liquid vessel named a “Tun”. This Tun, is made of wood, and inside the liquid from all casks is allowed to “marry” as we call it. The whiskies were allowed to marry for about 3 months, after which they were bottled.
The cask selection is indeed interesting: the oldest is a 1967 cask, where the rest are 1970’s and 1980’s casks. Cask type is also mixed with 70% ex-Bourbon and 30% ex-Sherry. What a lovely combination of casks, it really is thrilling to be able to try this one. And boy, it did not let me down.

To create the first batch of Tun 1509, David* carefully hand selected 42 of the finest casks – 35 traditional American oak barrels and seven European oak sherry butts – from the distillery’s precious aged stocks.
All were transferred to Tun 1509, which sits in Warehouse 24, for several months before bottling. This is a rare interpretation of the marrying process and allows all 42 casks to come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie that’s greater than the sum of its constituent parts.
TASTING NOTES: Deep and rich on the nose, with floral notes, sweet vanilla and orange peel. Velvety smooth to taste with tangy citrus, mellow cinnamon spice and blossom honey.

Irish Distillers Unveils New Microdistillery!

September 21, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Irish Distillers CEO Anna Malmhake and Graduate Disitller Karen Cotter

Irish Distillers CEO Anna Malmhake and Graduate Disitller Karen Cotter

Irish Distillers, the largest whiskey producer in Ireland and home to the iconic brands of Irish whiskey – Jameson, Powers, PADDY, Redbreast, Green Spot and Midleton Very Rare, has unveiled a new Microdistillery in Midleton, Co. Cork. The Microdistillery is a key innovation hub that will support the resurgence of Irish Whiskey through experimentation with distillations of new and old styles of Irish whiskey.

The opening of the new facility marks the return to distilling in the Old Midleton buildings for the first time since 1975. An innovative array of whiskeys, featuring a mix of cereals, will be distilled using a manual operation during the first year, while in phase two a microbrewery will be introduced that will enable the Microdistillery to craft whiskeys using a wider range of cereals and yeast strains.

The first Distiller of the Microdistillery at Midleton has been announced as Karen Cotter – one of eight alumni of the Jameson Graduate Distiller Programme and the only female distiller in Ireland. Karen joined Irish Distillers in 2012 and has been mentored by Midleton Master Distiller, Brian Nation – an ongoing relationship that will ensure that Karen has the support she needs to carry on the proud tradition of distilling in Midleton.

As Jameson continues to underpin the success of the Irish whiskey category, we are looking at new ways of building on our tradition while also forging the future of Irish whiskey. We are delighted with the opening of the Midleton Microdistillery which, when fully operational, will produce 400 casks of Irish whiskey per annum, from brewing through to maturation. These will be innovative, small batch expressions that will play a key role in the development of the category.

Our Archivist recently uncovered a notebook personally used by John Jameson II in 1826 which he used to take note of special recipes and ingredient mixes used by the original Jameson distillers. The Microdistillery will enable us to bring these old Irish whiskeys back to life in the modern era, as well as experiment and innovate with new ingredients mixes.

In addition, it will be a key feature of the Jameson Experience Midleton. We currently welcome over 410,000 tourists per year to the Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin and the Jameson Experience Midleton. As Irish whiskey tourism continues its rapid expansion, it is essential that we develop our tourist offering so they get an authentic, Irish experience.
– Anna Malmhake: Chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers

I am honoured to take up my new role as Distiller at the Midleton Microdistillery – my own distillery! I had my first taste of Midleton during a six-month work placement and found the story of what we do in Midleton and why we do it fascinating. I wanted to be a part of an industry that respects the traditions of old while using environmentally sustainable ways to ensure quality whiskey production for the future.”

Craft and innovation are at the core of everything we do and Irish Distillers have had the foresight to invest in an experimentation hub that will enable us to study cereal mixes, resurrect old Irish whiskey recipes and be a centre of excellence for training up-and-coming Midleton distillers. For me, the Microdistillery presents a fantastic opportunity to be at the cutting edge of innovation in Irish Whiskey and, with a steady hand guiding me, the future really is bright for us. Who knows – maybe we will find the next Jameson here!
