Tastival 2016 Bottling Brings Festival Flavours to Life!

May 26, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

“We always aim to push boundaries with our Tastival bottlings ..."

“We always aim to push boundaries with our Tastival bottlings …”

Jura Single Malt Whisky has revealed its Tastival 2016 bottling, a new limited edition expression to mark the distillery’s annual island whisky festival. The flavours within this remarkable single malt have inspired Jura’s first ever ‘crowd sourced’ packaging, chosen by the whisky’s social media followers.

Jura Tastival, which takes place on 25 & 26 May this year, celebrates new and exciting ways to enjoy whisky – and the creation of this year’s festival edition is no exception, with a triple sherry finish, using hand-selected casks.

To complement its sweet and intense flavour, Jura asked four artists from across the world to create a unique illustrated packaging design based upon their interpretations of the Tastival 2016 bottling, which is 51% ABV, non-chill filtered.

Following heated competition, where fans voted for their favourite design online, Jura can now reveal that its first ever crowd sourced packaging is based on the artwork created by German artist Florian Schommer.

The intricate design incorporates Florian’s personal tasting notes for the whisky, including apple, represented by branches, notes of vanilla, captured in delicate white flowers and a colour scheme based on an aromatic blend of maple syrup and roasted hazelnut.

Other artists who competed to win the Tastival packaging contract included French illustrator Yo Az, UK based Claire Scully and Karin Ohlsson from Sweden. Their colourful array of designs can still be viewed on Jura’s Facebook page.

The limited edition bottling is the last Tastival expression to be overseen by much-loved Jura Distillery Manager, Willie Cochrane, who announced his retirement last week. He hands over the reins to Graham Logan, a former Jura Mash / Stillman who has worked at his side for over two decades.

Every limited edition is special, but this one’s particularly close to my heart as it commemorates my last Jura Tastival, which has been a highlight on my calendar for the past ten years.

It wouldn’t be Tastival without something a bit different to inspire new perspectives on whisky, and I’m sure Florian Schommer’s wonderful illustrations will do just that!
– Willie Cochrane

We always aim to push boundaries with our Tastival bottlings and the triple sherry finish on this new expression is a perfect example of the creativity and craftsmanship I want to continue to encourage in my role as distillery manager.
– Graham Logan

Tastival guests will have first opportunity to try and purchase this year’s limited edition bottling at the festival on 25 & 26 May, where they will be invited to share their own whisky tasting notes. Jura Tastival 2016 will be available online and in shops globally (excluding US) RRP £85 from 30 May 2016.

Midleton Dair Ghaelach. It means, quite simply, Irish Oak. This whiskey has been matured in barrels made from sustainable virgin Irish Oak grown on the Ballaghtobin Estate in Co. Kilkenny and what the oak brings to this special whiskey is the true and unique flavour of Ireland. Its provenance as individual as its fragrance, its journey from grain to glass as distinguished as its finish, this is a whiskey like no other.
The Irish Oak casks are filled with a select range of 15 to 22 year old Single Pot Still distillates. Nosed and tasted every month by our Master Blender, Billy Leighton, and Master of Maturation, Kevin O’Gorman, after almost a year, Midleton Dair Ghaelach was judged to be beautifully balanced; subtly yet unmistakably flavoured to perfection by the Irish Oak that gives it its name. Midleton Dair Ghaelach is one of a kind as it is our first Irish whiskey to be matured in home-grown Irish Oak.
NOSE: The crisp Pot Still spices are seamlessly enriched by the woodland fragrances of the Irish Oak. Sweet vanilla notes are given depth by some chocolate honeycomb and coffee beans, whilst the balancing rich fruit aromas of red berries, pineapple and ripe banana compliment the subtle aromatic oils.
TASTE: The typical Pot Still spices are fortified by the Irish Oak character. Robust yet mellow, clove and cinnamon give way to dairy fudge and milk chocolate sweetness combining with a touch of stewed apple.
FINISH: An exceptionally long finish, with some sweet spices slowly fading, leaving the final bow to the Irish Oak.

Eva Longoria Announced as Judge of The Venture Competition!

May 20, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Venture Judges

The Venture Judges

A Global Search for the World’s Best Social Enterprise Startups

World-renowned actress, businesswoman and philanthropist, Eva Longoria, has been announced as a judge for The Venture – Chivas Regal’s search to find and support the most innovative startups from across the world.

Eva Longoria will join a panel of expert judges tasked with dividing a portion of Chivas’ $1million fund amongst The Venture finalists; inspirational social entrepreneurs who aim to succeed in business while having a positive impact on the lives of others. Following the continued success of The Eva Longoria Foundation, which helps Latinas build better futures for themselves and their families through education and entrepreneurship, Longoria has a wealth of invaluable expertise and advice to offer Chivas’ The Venture finalists.

Now in its second year, Chivas’ The Venture has received over 2,500 applications from scalable and sustainable startups across six continents tackling a range of social and environmental issues. One finalist will represent each of the 27 participating countries in New York in July. Following a series of quarter and semi-final pitches, the grand finalists will have just five minutes to impress Longoria and the other judges with their pitch in front of a live audience at the Chivas’ The Venture Final on July 14th (www.TheVenture.com).

I’m delighted to be part of the judging panel for Chivas’ The Venture and can’t wait to hear the unique stories behind the 27 startups from across the world. Social enterprise has such a huge part to play in the future of business and it is something that is very close to my heart.

Best of luck to all the finalists!
– Eva Longoria

Longoria will bring her long-standing passion for entrepreneurship, mentorship and equal opportunities to the panel of judges, which includes Joe Huff (Founder of LSTN Sound Co.), Sonal Shah (founding Executive Director of the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation) and Alexandre Ricard (Pernod Ricard Chairman and CEO).

Joe Huff has been invited to join this year’s judging panel due to his knowledge and experience in founding successful social enterprise LSTN Sound Co. LSTN Sound Co. is an impact-focused company whose core belief is ‘what’s good for the business should be good for the world’. Its goal is to produce premium audio products and uses proceeds from sales to change lives through the power of music. Every purchase helps provide hearing aids to a person in need through charity partner, Starkey Hearing Foundation. In less than three years since LSTN Sound Co’s inception in 2012, the company has been able to help give the gift of sound to over 20,000 people.

Social enterprise is something I have been involved with for many years, I’m hugely passionate about using business as a force for good and believe it is becoming increasingly important in today’s world.

The range of social entrepreneurs at this year’s Chivas The Venture Final is really exciting to see – I can’t wait to meet them in New York and find out more about the businesses.
– Joe Huff

From today, Chivas has put the power in the world’s hands; inviting the public to vote for their favourite social entrepreneur to determine how the first $250,000 in funding is split. From May 9th to June 13th people can vote for finalists at www.TheVenture.com. The range of social entrepreneurs is extraordinary, from Julia Römer, the founder of Coolar (Germany), who has developed innovative refrigerators powered by warm water that enable doctors to preserve lifesaving vaccines in off-grid regions; to Jaco Gerrits, the founder of CrashDetech (South Africa) who has created a smartphone app that automatically detects serious car crashes, pinpoints the location, and dispatches the nearest ambulance, supplying paramedics with real-time lifesaving information.

We’re really excited to be announcing Eva Longoria as a judge for Chivas’ The Venture. She has a clear passion for entrepreneurialism and the importance of business having a positive impact on our society. Along with Joe Huff, Sonal Shah and Alexandre Ricard, we feel we have the perfect balance of expert judges to evaluate the finalists of this year’s competition.

We look forward to seeing how people vote online over the next few weeks and which enterprises capture the imagination of the public.
– Richard Black – Chivas Regal Global Brand Director

Sampling Langatun Swiss Malt Whisky: Flavours That Widened My Smile To Maximum!

May 19, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Two Strengths of Langatun 'Old Deer'

Two Strengths of Langatun ‘Old Deer’

Following last week’s UK launch of Langatun Swiss Single Malt Whisky I’ve been sent a couple of samples of their Old Deer drams.

With a history dating back to the 1860s, Hans Baumberger, grandson of the original founder Jakob Baumberger, reopened the Langatun Distillery in 2007. Imported by Angels’ Nectar proprietor Highfern Ltd, initially four triple distilled single malt bottlings from Langatun are being offered.

Old Deer is the distillery’s classic single malt, distilled from un-peated barley, fermented with an English stout yeast, and matured in sherry and chardonnay casks.

Bottled after six years maturation, Old Deer is offered at sipping strength of 40% and cask proof of 62.1% Vol.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Langatun ‘Old Deer’ Swiss Single Malt (40%)

Nose: Sweet, fruity tropical mix, pineapples, green apples and honeyed caramel – very thick and lush!

Palate: Again, sweet, fruity tropical mix on the tongue, just like it says on the nose!

Finish: Quite a dry finish that pulls at the tastebuds. With a nice mix of spice, grapefruit and ongoing sweetness.

Overall: A lovely dram, flavoursome and full of character. But … I’ve been spoilt as outlined below …

Tasting Notes – Langatun ‘Old Deer’ Swiss Single Malt (62.1%)

Nose: That’s some alcohol! Caramel but less sweet with alcohol soaked apples.

Palate: Mmm … very sweet and thick mouthfeel, fruity tropical mix on the tongue but much more acute Syrupy caramel and Xmas cake mix – all soaked in alcohol!

Finish: Hot! Spicy finish with that tanin dryness as before but not so pronounced. The sweetness tempers the hot alcohol fire as it attempts to numb the lips!

Overall: That’s one nice dram! The 40% is good but at this strength the brakes are released and the flavours are released to invade your senses!

If you can, go for this one – Yummy flavours and a delivery to the tastebuds that widened my smile to maximum!

Many thanks to Robert from Highfern Ltd for sending the samples!

A splash of water opens up the whisky, bringing into play a burst of aged balsamic vinegar, dried fruits, tangy-orange, and a gentle reminder of Christmas incense and spice.
Taste: The texture is oily and viscous, with a delicious primary flavour of caramelised orange and lemon, plump sultanas, a hint of brown sugar, but then a wave of salty, briny notes – olives, salted cashew nuts and some nice, toasty oak flavours, like walnut and leather.

One Last Tastival: Jura Distillery Manager Willie Cochrane Announces Retirement!

May 16, 2016 by Gary 2 Comments

Tastival Attendees Invited to Toast Willie’s Retirement with the Man Himself

Tastival Attendees Invited to Toast Willie’s Retirement with the Man Himself

Whisky lovers from across the globe are invited to join Willie Cochrane – Jura Distillery Manager and one of the industry’s best-loved characters – at his last ever Tastival from 25-26 May, as he announces his retirement after an incredible 39 year career.

Willie’s friendliness, expertise and passion for the job has made him a celebrated figure in whisky circles and to this day, he loves welcoming visitors from far and wide, guiding them through the craft and expertise that goes into producing each cask of Jura.

He hands over the reins to Graham Logan, a former Jura Mash / Stillman who has worked at Willie’s side for over two decades, helping Jura become the award-winning success it is today.

But before Willie departs, the pair will take attendees at Tastival – Jura’s annual two-day whisky festival – on a journey through the senses, as they help the island’s honorary Diurachs (the Gaelic term for the community of Jura) discover different ways to enjoy whisky.

Willie and Graham will be leading The Master’s Tour; a rare chance to experience the Jura still house, as seen through the eyes of the people who make it, including a whisky tasting and Q&A session.
The pair will be also be signing bottles of this year’s limited edition Tastival bottling at the event – where guests will be amongst the first in the world to try this special expression, the last ever festival bottling to be overseen by Willie.

Jura is just as important to me now, as it has been for the last 39 years. I’ll find it hard to walk away completely, so I’ll still be involved in promoting the whisky from time to time. Definitely not a quiet retirement but one I’m very excited about, especially as I’ll have more time for the grandchildren, and to take holidays abroad with my wife!

Graham and I have worked together for years and I know he’s the right man for the job. I’ll sleep well at night knowing the distillery is in capable hands, with someone who loves Jura just as much as I do.
– Willie Cochrane

Willie Cochrane will be a hard act to follow – he is something of a legend and rightly so. Willie played a huge part in making the distillery the success it is today and has been an asset to the quality of the whisky that we produce.

I hope to be able to put my own stamp on the distillery, while maintaining the same level of craftsmanship and, overseeing some fantastic new bottlings.
– Graham Logan

The English Whisky Co Release Another Limited Edition First For England!

May 13, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

This whisky is from the exclusive Founders Private Cellar

This whisky is
from the exclusive Founders Private Cellar

The English Whisky Co. will release a very rare Single Malt Whisky on Thursday 19th May. This whisky is from the exclusive Founders Private Cellar, which only sees casks released on a very occasional basis.

Described by the head distillery as “sublime!”

Described by the head distiller as “sublime!”

This particular Cask, no. 365, is a complete one off. The single malt whisky spent the 1st half of its life maturing in a bourbon cask, which is not unusual but in a very bold move, it was then transferred to a virgin oak cask for the remainder of its big sleep.

The resulting whisky is not only different but was described but David Fitt, the head distiller as “sublime!”

These rare and unusual casks are highly sought after by collectors and drinkers alike as the number of bottles that can be filled from a cask is extremely limited. In this case we will only fill 285 bottles in total.

It is a privilege to have these casks in our private collection and whilst it is my job to ensure the collection is in good order for the next generation, I am always proud when a cask is deemed ideal for bottling and can therefore be shared with the wider whisky community.
– Andrew Nelstrop – distillery owner

Likely Retail Price approx. £175

Tasting notes:

Nose: Freshly baked treacle tart and milk chocolate digestive biscuits. Vanilla, stewed pears and bananas. Woody with hints of honeysuckle, soft leather and liquorice.

Taste: Milk chocolate and vanilla. A hint of golden syrup. Very fruity with an almost herbal note of fresh sage. A lovely long, dry and spicy finish.

Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle. The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp.
Nose: takes me back to my early teens, spending schooldays working on a farm: pure farmyard with an earthy yet fruity punch. The sort of complex nose that almost makes you forget to drink the stuff…almost…;
Taste: a gentle coating of vaguely sweet peat that multiplies in intensity; salivating yet chewy. Some liquorice and hickory notes make their drying mark;
Finish: distinctly gristy and unusually dry for a smoky malt. Long, luscious and not a little oaky late on;
Balance: a bit more than a tang, believe me! Faultlessly clean distillate that revels in its unaccustomed peaty role. The age is confusing and appears mixed, with both young and older traits being evident.
Ratings: 94 Points – Jim Murray's 2016 Whisky Bible.

Founded by George Taylor and Alexander Milton, it was originally known as Milton – named after the nearby Milton Castle. Strathisla was the name of the actual whisky produced and eventually became the name of the distillery.
Much of Strathisla's production is used for blending and the distillery is the home of the one of the most famous blends – Chivas Regal. The distillery is the oldest in Northern Scotland and is certainly a delightful distillery to visit as it has an almost fairytale quality.

Yes, this is it – an exact replica of the whisky left in Antarctica by Sir Ernest Shackleton during his Antarctic expedition between 1907 and 1909. The whisky was recreated down to the very last detail by Whyte and Mackay’s blender extraordinaire, Richard Paterson. The final replica bottle of Mackinlay’s blend contains whiskies from Speyside, the Island, and the Highlands, and the recipe even includes some very rare 1983 Glen Mhor!
THE SENSORY EXPERIENCE
COLOUR: Light honey, straw gold with shimmering highlights.
NOSE: Soft, elegant and refined. Delicate crushed apple, pear and fresh pineapple. Notes of oak shavings and smoke. Hints of vanilla, creamy caramel and nutmeg.
TASTE: Plenty of impact on the palate; a tantalising array of flavours, harmonious and exhilarating.
THE PRESENTATION
BOX: A unique, stand-out hexagonal "shipping case" with an open "see me" window on the front panel. The raffia-encasing of the product is reminiscent of the original straw-bound bottles discovered in the Antartic. A holographic badge issues authenticity.
BOTTLE: A painstaking process was followed to ensure all bubbles and imperfections in the original were replicated. In effect, the glass manufacturer turned off all the modern-day quality controls.
LABEL SET: All lettering was meticulously drawn by hand to ensure a perfect match to the original. Paperstocks were selected to perform as the original stocks of over a century ago.
