This is a Lazarus whisky, the first single malt from one of Islay’s legendary distilleries, Bruichladdich, back from the dead on 29th May 2001 under new and collective ownership, reborn on that day with the first cask of its whisky produced by its signature traditional methods.
Bruichladdich 1On 29th May 2001, the honour of ‘filling’ that first cask was given to ‘Wee Ruari’, the five month old son of the distillery’s other legend, inspirational manager, Mark Reynier. It was his idea to buy the distillery into independent production. He then managed and stage managed the reborn distillery to a rolling success story, with a thrilling and ever inventive series of firsts.
We saw at first hand just how Reynier revolutionised the marketing of single malt Scotch. Always the master of the image and the master of ceremonies, he sent out stunning visual images no one could resist using; and he came up with fun ideas, events and sponsorships. All of these propelled the name of Bruichladdich into the spotlight and all of them underlined it cool sassiness with a hint of butch.
On 29th May 2001, while young Ruari was there in spirit, so to speak, his fond papa may have given him a little hand in filling Cask I.
That cask eventually yielded 376 bottles.
In the meantime, Bruichladdich’s success as a true independent was such that it became a target for the big spirits multinationals. On 25th July 2012, less than a year ago, the distillery was sold by its 60 shareholders to Remy Cointreau.
The only shareholder to oppose the deal was Mark Reynier, whose skills and imagination had driven its success.
With characteristic philosophical grace, Me Reynier understood the position of the other 59 shareholders who preferred to secure their personal finances and take the profit on the sale. He declined an offer to stay with the distillery, wished it well and walked away.
Now he and the not-so-wee now 13 year old Ruari, have asked Inveraray’s celebrated Scotch whisky specialist outlet, Loch Fyne Whiskies, under Master of Whisky, Richard Joynson, to sell 250 of the 376 bottles Cask I produced.
The family will retain the others and the 250 offered for sale to collectors are predictably vanishing at speed.
Loch Fyne Whiskies has made the decision to offer access to this historic malt to its own customers before they are all gone.
This whisky is not only unique and historic, it marks success and loss in a single dram. It measures the span of Mark Reynier’s life-saving connection with the distillery.
No Bruichladdich collection – and no single malt collection – will be complete without a ‘Wee Ruari’ – a 70cl single cask bottling, 11 years old, 46% Abv – an absolute one-off.

The Glenlivet Cipher Twitter Tasting!

June 23, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet Cipher Line-Up!

The Glenlivet Cipher Line-Up!

Monday evenings Tweet Tasting was all puzzles and enigma this week with three Glenlivets to sample plus their mysterious Glenlivet Cipher.

The Cipher was outlined here just recently, so everyone attending the tasting, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, was very eager to have the opportunity to sample something a little bit special.

The malts sampled were:-

  • The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve
  • The Glenlivet 12 Year Old
  • The Glenlivet 15 Year Old
  • The Glenlivet Cipher

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #TheGlenlivetCipher on Twitter.

You may also want to try out the tasting wheel specially created for the release of the Cipher and see how close you can get to cracking the secret flavours used in the dram.

I got a Very Low 38% but “Hey Ho!” – that’s what my tastebuds said on the night and you can’t argue with a tastebud!

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve (40%)

A NAS (No Age Statement) single malt whisky. Created to honour the original vision of their pioneering founder George Smith, The Glenlivet Founders Reserve pays tribute to the uniquely smooth and fruity taste he first envisioned way back in 1824.

Distilled using the same time-honoured techniques introduced by George Smith himself, The Glenlivet Founders Reserve is drawn predominantly from a range of traditional aged oak casks.

Nose: Sweet and citrusy with a hint of mintness. Signature vanilla, pears and red apples! Also detect a Slight woodiness in there as well.

Palate: Light mouthfeel, delicate – fruits and a little vanilla.

Finish: Pepper and spice with a creamy finish – zingy on those tastebuds – moderately long.

Overall: An impeccably smooth, light dram that’s not too heavy on the palate.

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet 12 Year Old (40%)

The Glenlivet’s signature style. Matured primarily in ex-American oak casks and using mineral-rich water from Josie’s Well, which helps to form its flavours during mashing & fermentation.

Nose: Sweet, creamy vanilla underlying fresh fruits – there’s that woodiness again which I like coupled with crisp apple aromas – Crunch!

Palate: Very light, intensely sweet, fruity flavours. Quite oaky.

Finish: Pleasantly spicy, peppery finish – not as hot as the Founder’s Reserve.

Overall: Not as sweet at the nose makes you believe but a very nicely balanced malt. Perfect to start the evening off with!

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet 15 Year Old (40%)

A proportion of the spirit is matured in a selection of French Oak casks for a limited period and was one of the first distilleries to use French oak for maturing whisky. The casks, from the Dordogne region, are usually used to mature cognacs.

Nose: Syrupy fruit with added vanilla & some rich woody notes thrown in. Rich apple & tropical fruits – I love this!

Palate: A bit ‘meatier’ than the 12 Year Old. Spice hits you early on but the vanilla caramel is divine!

Finish: The spice stays through to the finish but it’s not overpowering. Quite a short finish.

Overall: Smooth as silk and perfectly balanced. One of my favourite malts!

Tasting Notes – The Glenlivet Cipher (48%)

Presented in an opaque, black bottle without any cask information, The Glenlivet Cipher is a Scotch whisky shrouded in mystery that helps whisky lovers to push the boundaries of flavour exploration. Crafted from a unique cask combination that has never before been used by The Glenlivet.

Nose: There’s punchy vanilla and red apples. Got a hint of Strawberry jam with honey and apricots.

Palate: Thick, sweet honey with hints of tropical fruit. Spicy, ginger chocolate goodiness!

Finish: Hot, spicy finish that’s long and quite fiery.

Overall: A game of two halves for me – sweet and caramel followed by a hot, chilli bite – Interesting!

My Favourite On The Night?

The Glenlivet Cipher – although I do love the 15 I had to pick this for the uniqueness of the experience – it’s not everyday you get to sample an enigma!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and the team at Richmond Towers (@DrinksPRAgency) for sending the samples!

And of course, The Glenlivet (@TheGlenlivet), without whom. Studying has never been so much fun!!

Mexico Bartender Claims The Chivas Masters Title!

June 23, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

2016 Chivas Master Alejandro Millan Ponce de Leon from Mexico

2016 Chivas Master Alejandro Millan Ponce de Leon from Mexico

Chivas Regal has crowned Alejandro Millan Ponce de Leon from Instituto Culinario de Mexico and Bootlegger in Puebla, Mexico as the 2016 Chivas Master. The first major bartending competition to be held in Shanghai saw Alejandro overcome fierce competition from 14 of the world’s most innovative bartenders over a five-day final.

Alejandro also led a group of fellow finalists to victory who, as a team, were awarded the title of ‘Chivas Masters Collective’ for their pop-up bar, The Beach Brothers @ Logan’s Punch. The team, comprising of Santiago Ortiz Jacome from Spain, Ben Rojo from the United States, Stanisław Domin from Poland, and Tomáš Melzer from Czech Republic will all embark on a once in a lifetime trip to the Tales of the Cocktail 2016 festival in New Orleans to learn from some of the industry’s most renowned bartenders.

Due to his team spirit, hospitality and outstanding drink creations Alejandro was awarded the overall Chivas Masters title. The expert panel of judges were impressed by Alejandro’s winning local cocktail, ‘El Jornalero’, which displayed a culinary connection with his region’s indigenous ingredients and showed a great authenticity tying it to the roots of his Mexican culture.

The accolade of Chivas Master will take Alejandro on a bespoke trip to one of the world’s most iconic bars in a city of his choice to create a signature Chivas cocktail as a lasting contribution to the global competition.

2016 Chivas Masters winning cocktail – ‘El Jornalero’

2016 Chivas Masters winning cocktail – ‘El Jornalero’

The 2016 Chivas Masters judging panel boasted some of the world’s top industry leaders: Chris Lowder, head bartender at the Four Seasons in Seoul; Naren Young, head bartender at Dante in New York City; industry legend Dre Masso; and Leo Robitschek, bar director of New York’s Eleven Madison Park, who each coached the finalists in a series of workshops and judged competitors on their bartending talent and ability to lead, mentor and inspire a team.

The global Chivas Masters final in Shanghai has opened my eyes and I hope that I have shown just what Mexico can do. It is a huge honour to hold the title of Chivas Master.

The support of my team in Mexico and the amazing bartenders around me here at the global final has showed me that true brotherhood exists, and being able to work with these people is a great privilege.
– Alejandro: 2016 Chivas Master

The third year of the Chivas Masters global bartending competition has shown the world that a great cocktail is more than just an exceptional spirit base, which is of course essential: teamwork and collaboration are also key components in delivering a memorable drinking experience.

Our winner Alejandro epitomised these values, underpinned by truly outstanding bartending skills – a worthy winner, supported by his team.
– Max Warner: Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal

The 15 competing bartenders earned their place at the global final by impressing at national heats, where they were challenged to recreate Chivas Regal’s journey across the globe. Creating serves that were inspired by the classic cocktails of New York to the booming bars of Shanghai via their home country, all cocktails were designed to enhance Chivas Regal’s smooth and generous house style – a feat that the bartenders were asked to replicate in the Chivas Masters global final this week.

On behalf of the wider judging panel it was fantastic to see such a resourceful, innovative and skilful group of bartenders competing – all of the finalists in Shanghai proved themselves to be at the top of their game.

However, Alejandro is a fantastic winner, both due to his exceptional talent behind the bar and his camaraderie throughout the finals. I can’t wait to see how his career progresses – I expect great things.
– Dre Massor

Sampling Glen Moray’s New Sherry Cask Finish Whisky!

June 16, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

The new Sherry Cask Finish expression joins the Glen Moray Classic Collection

The new Sherry Cask Finish expression joins the Glen Moray Classic Collection

Glen Moray is a quality Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Elgin, the capital of Speyside, Scotland’s most famous whisky region. The distillery has been producing fine malt whisky, distilled in traditional copper stills, on the banks of the River Lossie since 1897.

The craft of producing Glen Moray Single Malt has been passed from generation to generation ensuring the legacy of the Glen Moray Distillery continues. In its lifetime, the distillery has known only five distillery managers; the most current being Graham Coull.

Whilst much has changed since distilling began, the ingredients have remained the same; ensuring Glen Moray has kept its authenticity and quality.

The Classic range of whiskies introduces consumers to an approachable and well-priced range, the latest of which is Glen Moray Classic Sherry Cask Finish. This dram offers a new twist on the traditional Glen Moray taste-profile by adding layers of rich and spicy sweetness to the spirit’s typically light and floral flavours of butterscotch and lemongrass.

Sherry Cask Finish is a celebration of the age old tradition of maturing whisky in the finest Oloroso sherry casks.

I select Glen Moray which has been maturing in American oak casks and transfer it to the highest quality sherry casks for a minimum of 8 months.

The resulting whisky is incredibly rich and satisfying.
– Graham Coull: Glen Moray Master Distiller

The new Sherry Cask Finish expression joins the Glen Moray Classic Collection including:-

  • Glen Moray Classic Single Malt
  • Glen Moray Classic Single Malt Port Finish
  • Glen Moray Classic Peated Single Malt

The Glen Moray Classic Collection is a wonderful introduction to the Glen Moray single malt range. The different expressions offer a variety of flavours and taste to suit the palate of every malt whisky drinker.

– Graham Coull: Glen Moray Master Distiller

I last sampled Glen Moray’s Drams just over a year ago so I was well pleased when they kindly sent me a sample of their new offering to try out.

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish (40%)

Nose: Lovely sweet, fruity-ness. There’s crunchy, juicy, red apple and toffee caramel with a dash of spice. Quite delightful!

Palate: Sweet fruits and powerful alcohol. Woody shot through with vanilla. Some red apples with a caramel topping.

Finish: Spicy, peppery, dry finish with just enough sweetness to prevent harshness – quite long.

Overall: Tastes stronger than the 40% quoted which gives it some fiery Ooomph!

Tasty, satisfying and with an exceptionally good price of around £22.00 that is a combination that takes some beating!

Many thanks to Glen Moray, for sending the samples and if you want to visit Glen Moray, the distillery has a visitor centre which offers tours all year round!

Glen Moray is available to buy from these Whisky Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt
  • Edencroft Fine Wine & Spirit Specialists
  • Abbey Whisky
  • Whisky Online
  • The Whisky Barrel
  • The Green Welly Stop

Unit: 70cl

The Double Cask is matured in their finest oak barrels then finished in a combination of first fill bourbon barrels followed by time in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks to produce this outstanding malt whisky that provides the perfect balance of rich spicy fruits, overlaid with the characteristic sea spray and vanilla oak finish for which the house of Glen Scotia is famous.
NOSE: Amber. Very sweet. Initially it is all creme caramel, caramelised fruit sugars, wood sugar, toffee and fudge before some apple and peach come through. In time a charred note of bourbon with a pleasing dusty dryness. Has some power.
PALATE: Sweet start and quite fat and though the alcohol gives a little tongue-tingling buzz the result is a good mid-palate weight. The dry distillery character is there still, but there is now depth to counter. Water slightly dismantles the different elements, but adds some dried mint.
FINISH: Deep and dark.

Peaty overview
Under the watchful eye of the Distillery Manager – and after a few anxious moments – anCnoc Peaty emerged once more from the stills at Knockdhu. Once laid down in bourbon casks, it developed beautifully, creating the most remarkable malt.
Dark peaty smokiness and light subtle flavours, as one.
The spirit has found form in a new range of individual expressions named after traditional peat-cutting tools, some of which are still used to this day. For we have those simple implements to thank for the wonder that is the Limited Edition anCnoc Peaty Collection. All that remains is to try them – and shine a light on your dark side.
creating anCnoc Peaty
When Knockdhu Distillery opened its doors back in October 1894, peat was most commonly used as a source of fuel throughout the Highlands.
There’s no doubt whisky made at Knockdhu was initially peaty but as time and technology moved on so did the production methods and with the dawn of specialist maltings the Knockdhu Distillery gradually moved to the unpeated style we associate with anCnoc Single Malt Scotch Whisky today.
In homage to our malt’s peaty origins we have crafted a truly remarkable Limited Edition Peaty range.
a craft? a science? both
anCnoc Peaty brings together dark peaty smokiness and light subtle flavours, as one. Each bottle carries a note of the PPM (parts per million) phenol in the distilled spirit.
In short, the higher the PPM levels, the peatier the whisky will be to taste and in turn helping you discover the perfect anCnoc Peaty expression to shine a light on your dark side.
The Cutter is a hand tool used to cut peat from less wet, shallower bogs.  This means the peat it reveals is drier and therefore more easily burnt producing a whisky that has a medium-heavy smokiness, in this case, with a phenol content of 20.5 ppm.
Colour: Cutter is pale yellow in appearance.
Nose: An initially thick and oily smoke structure reveals a sharper, more medicinal phenolic layer and a piercing burst of fruitiness. Ripe peaches and just a touch of oak. The nose is intense and unforgettable.
Taste: More ashy, with a slight apple-core bitterness. Leather and spicy vanilla is there too, lingering at the back, accompanied by sharper notes of pink grapefruit and ripe orchard fruits. Elegant and long. A kaleidoscope of spicy and peaty notes that die out with a juicy burst and a loud call for another sip.
Ratings: 96.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible and World Whisky Awards 2015 Best Highland Single Malt with no age statement.

The Chivas Masters Global Finalists

Chivas Regal has announced the 15 international bartenders that will compete in the Chivas Masters Global Final in Shanghai on 19th-22nd June – the first time a major bartending competition has held its finals in the city. The Asian cocktail capital will play host to this year’s finalists who each impressed in regional heats with their bartending skills and demonstration of their knowledge of Chivas.

The national heats of the Chivas Masters – now in its third year – challenged bartenders to recreate Chivas Regal’s journey across the globe. The 15 global finalists created serves inspired by the classic cocktails of New York to the booming bars of Shanghai, via their local cocktail scene, all designed to enhance Chivas Regal’s smooth and generous house style – a feat they will have to replicate in the Chivas Masters Global Final.

Finalists are preparing to jet off to Shanghai for a four-day experience that will incorporate key challenges and workshops with the industry’s best, including Naren Young, Head Bartender at Dante in New York City and Chris Lowder, Head Bartender at the Four Seasons in Seoul. Naren and Chris will be joined on the judging panel by industry legend Dre Masso, Founder of Akademi in Bali, and Leo Robitschek, Bar Director of New York’s Eleven Madison Park and the NoMad Hotel Bar, where they will judge competitors on their bartending talent and ability to lead, mentor and inspire a team.

The announcement of the global finalists always marks a build of anticipation for the Chivas Masters Global Final – a time at which excitement for the competition hits fever pitch. Our national champions have impressed us so far but now have the opportunity to represent their countries alongside one of the world’s most prestigious Scotch brands and, by doing so, ensure their future as a top-class bartender.

We can’t wait to witness the start of this incredible journey in Shanghai.
– Max Warner: Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal

Collaboration at the Global Final will be rewarded this year by granting a winning team, formed at the competition – the Chivas Masters Collective – a once in a lifetime trip to the Tales of the Cocktail 2016 in New Orleans. A further prize will be awarded to the 2016 Global Chivas Master, who will earn a bespoke trip to one of the world’s most iconic bars in a city of their choice to create a signature Chivas cocktail as their lasting contribution to the global competition.

Since launching the Compass Box Whisky Co., I have always been a firm believer in the spirit of enlightenment – that the more information we can share with our customers about the Scotch whisky we produce, the better. Alas, it transpires such beliefs fall foul of current EU and UK regulations, which prevent us from sharing information about the age of every component whisky used in the creation of our blends.
This whisky, Enlightenment, is our response to these regulations.
Inspired by the writers, philosophers and scientists of the Age of Enlightenment it sets out to encourage the industry to consider the absurdity of a system that prevents producers from telling consumers exactly what has gone into the whiskies they are drinking. And of course the whisky itself is something rather special. A blend of fruity, fragrant Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, it is bursting with aromas of fresh orchard fruit, flavours of vanilla, soft spice and pear and an alluring apple peel waxiness on the finish. An uplifting, enlightening whisky with which to ponder the world of Scotch not only as it is but also as it could be.
John Glaser, Whiskymaker.
Flavour Descriptors: Fresh, vibrant and uplifting with a mouthfeel that is moreish and mouth-watering. On the nose you will find bright apple and pear, vanilla cream and light violet; on the palate soft spice, gentle citric notes and more of that uplifting orchard fruit character.
Recommendations: True to its name, this is an enlightening whisky enjoyed equally well in moments of quiet contemplation or at the heart of a lively discussion with friends. Perfect served as an aperitif with ice and a splash of water or soda water.

Over our first ten years there have been many people who have helped Compass Box achieve our success. This special 10th Anniversary bottling of our signature whisky Hedonism, bringing back our iconic "Hedonism head” (created by graphic artist Chris Edmunds for our first release), is a tribute to everyone who has helped Compass Box in our first decade.
The original bottling of Hedonism was the culmination of a painstaking search for great casks and it set a course for what Hedonism has become. I spent many months collecting cask samples from different distilling companies and brokers, tasting and re-tasting, blending the very best casks in innumerable combinations, until I felt I had something unassailably good. Good enough to launch the Compass Box Whisky Company.
The single cask, distilled in 1971 at the Invergordon Distillery, while much older than what we typically use for Hedonism, represents to me perfection in maturation, the basis for all the casks we select for Hedonism going back to that first batch in 2000.
This special edition is meant to be a suitable toast to all of you who have helped make Compass Box what it is today.
Thank you. Above all, share and enjoy.

Hedonism is Compass Boxes unique and award-winning blended grain Scotch whisky. They produce it once or twice per year, depending on their ability to source the quality of casks they require. Rare and old, it’s something special for both the collector and the new whisky enthusiast.
Rare, Old Scotch Grain Whisky: Hedonism is unusual in the Scotch whisky world: a blended grain Scotch whisky. It is very rare to see 100% grain whisky bottlings, in Scotland. Going back 100 years, grain whisky brands were more common, but they were overtaken in popularity by the big brands of blended Scotch, which comprised both grain whisky and malt whisky. Today, most Scotch grain whisky gets blended into the big brand names, typically at young ages. For Hedonism, they search for old casks of Scotch grain whisky. And they only produce Hedonism once a year, when they find casks with the right flavour profile.
Rich, Sweet, Alluring: When good Scotch grain whisky is aged in good quality American oak casks, the results can be stunning: a rich, sweet, alluring whisky, redolent of vanilla, pastry cream and coconut. You’ll find all these things in the Hedonism bottlings. We believe that great Scotch grain whisky is the little-known treasure of the Scotch whisky industry.
Flavour Descriptors: Elegant flavours of vanilla cream, toffee, coconut.
Recommendations: As an aperitif, serve with a small amount of chilled water. Late in the evening, serve neat. Also makes a great whisky sour.
Distillery Sourcing: Will vary according to batch but typically whiskies from the following distilleries: Cameron Bridge, Carsebridge, Cambus, Port Dundas or Dumbarton.
Wood: 100% first-fill American oak barrels or rejuvenated American oak Hogsheads.

The Dalmore Launches A New Collection Exclusively For Travel Retail!

June 7, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Dalmore Fortuna Meritas Collection will be available in European travel retail stores from Spring 2016

The Dalmore Fortuna Meritas Collection will be available in European travel retail stores from Spring 2016

The Dalmore are launching a new collection exclusively for travel retail. Premiering today, 7th June, in Lagardère Travel retail, Buy Paris Duty Free, Paris Charles de Gaulle, the collection will be available in all European Travel Retail stores, from Summer 2016.

Three new expressions; Regalis, Luceo and Dominium, will join Valour to become The Dalmore Fortuna Meritas Collection. Inspired by the distillery’s belief that ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’, each expression is a tribute to the brand’s history; celebrating the brave act of the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie who saved the life of King Alexander III, and the rewards which he received in return.

The cask selection also pays homage to the Mackenzie family, who took custodianship of The Dalmore distillery in 1867. Andrew and Charles Mackenzie travelled in search of only the finest casks to mature their whisky, unprecedented at the time, and forged a relationship with the renowned Gonzalez Byass bodgea in Jerez, a partnership which still flourishes today.

Over 100 years later, these hand-selected casks are influential in shaping the spirit of The Dalmore and the three new travel retail expressions have each been maturing in different sherry woods to give them a bold, distinctive and unique flavour – The Dalmore Regalis is finished in Amoroso, The Dalmore Luceo in Apostoles, whilst The Dalmore Dominium matures in Matusalem 30 years old sherry casks which are exclusively sourced by The Dalmore.

I start the whisky making process with a vision of what style I would like each whisky to have. The American White Oak in which we initially mature our whisky gives me a wonderful canvas from which to start each whisky’s creation. The Dalmore is an exceptional spirit whose character shines through and develops to unrivalled levels when matured in the right casks – it is my job to ensure that I find the perfect cask for the whisky to excel.

For this collection I looked to our long standing and unique partnership with Gonzalez Byass as this allowed me to draw from rare, rich and valuable sherry casks. I was able to create a different and unique finish for each whisky, giving each of them a rich and complex flavour, but with their own nuances and individual flair.

The Dalmore Valour

Valour means courage, and it is at the very heart of The Dalmore story. In 1263, the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie bravely saved King Alexander III of Scotland from the fury of a charging stag. The grateful King granted the Clan three rewards – the right to use the a 12-pointed Royal Stag in their coat of arms, the motto ‘Luceo Non Uro’ and the lands of Kintail.

Wood Finish: American White Oak, 30 years old Matusalem oloroso sherry and Port Pipes
Aroma: Ripe plums, citrus fruits and creamy caramel
Palate: Candied orange, pineapple and chocolate fudge
Finish: Black forest fruits, coconut, figs and marzipan
ABV: 40%
RSP: £60 / €75

The Dalmore Regalis

The name Regalis means royal, or regal, which is befitting to The Dalmore as the 12-pointed Royal Stag adorns every bottle.
In 1263 the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie bravely saved King Alexander III of Scotland from the fury of a charging stag and in recognition of this noble act the grateful King granted the Clan Mackenzie the right to use the emblem in their coat of arms. When ancestors of the Clan took control of The Dalmore distillery in 1867, they took with them this striking icon which has since adorned each bottle of The Dalmore, symbolising its regal legacy.

Wood Finish: American White Oak and Amoroso sherry
Aroma: Mulled wine, exotic fruits, marzipan, sweet syrups and toffee
Palate: Treacle toffee, roasted walnuts, pecan cake and Manuka honey
Finish: Maraschino cherries, espresso coffee, liquorice and vanilla

The Dalmore Luceo

Luceo literally means “I Shine” and is taken from the motto ‘Luceo Non Uro – I Shine, Not Burn’ of the Clan Mackenzie who were owners of The Dalmore Distillery.

Wood Finish: American White Oak and Apostoles
Aroma: Cognac soaked Madeira cake, tangy fruits, treacle tart, crushed almonds and praline chocolate

The Dalmore Dominium

Dominium means domain, or ownership. In 1263, the King not only granted his saviour the use of the Royal Stag emblem but also as further reward for this brave and noble act, the grateful King granted the Clan dominion over the land of Kintail in the West Highlands.

Wood Finish: American White Oak and 30 years old Matusalem sherry
Aroma: Sweet fruits, sandalwood, lemon tart, honey, caramel coffee and a hint of liquorice spice
Palate: Sherry soaked raisins, black toffee and banana cake
