Irish Distillers Named Distiller of the Year at the First Icons of Whisky Ireland awards!

November 28, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jameson Distillery Bow St

Irish Distillers has been named Distiller of the Year at the first Icons of Whisky Ireland awards. The Icons of Whisky Ireland aim to recognise the diversity and passion within the Irish whiskey industry today, they are presented by Rob Allanson, Editor of Whisky Magazine and include the Hall of Fame Ireland ceremony. Irish Distillers was also honoured with a number of top accolades including Visitor Attraction of the Year, Master Blender and the Irish Whiskey Brand Ambassador categories.

We are delighted to have been acknowledged with such a prestigious range of awards in this year’s Icons of Whisky Ireland. To receive recognition in a number of areas from whiskey tourism to innovation from our industry peers is extremely special.

It is also a tribute to the growth and success of Irish whiskey and Jameson that the organisers of the Icons of Whisky, Whisky Magazine, decided Ireland warranted its own category from this year.
– Jean-Christophe Coutures: Chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers

(L-R) Ray Dempsey, General Manager at Jameson Distillery Bow St., Ger Garland, Irish Distillers whiskey ambassador and Paul Wickham, General Manager of Midleton Distillery.

Jameson Distillery Bow St was recognised as the top visitor attraction, which is particularly significant following the €11m redevelopment of Jameson Distillery Bow St in 2017. Despite being closed for six months to accommodate construction, Jameson Distillery Bow St saw a surge in visitors as whiskey enthusiasts, local and international, have flocked to enjoy the new look distillery and the new experiences it offers.

This is a fantastic endorsement of the hard work our team has carried out in the redevelopment and opening of the brand-new Jameson Distillery Bow St. We’ve been bowled over by the goodwill and feedback from everyone who has come to our home on Bow St to touch, smell and most importantly, taste Jameson in the original Bow St Distillery building.

– Ray Dempsey: General Manager at Jameson Distillery Bow St

Although I have the privilege of accepting this award, this win is down to the dedication, commitment and the passion of everyone at Midleton Distillery. This award is a testament to the hard work we have put in through our commitment to innovation.

This quest to innovate and build the category has helped us to create a portfolio of whiskeys that can be enjoyed worldwide and offers something for every occasion, every palate and price.
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender at Irish Distillers

Advocating on behalf of Irish whiskey is central to the Irish Distillers mission and this was celebrated at the awards when Gerard Garland, Advocacy Team Manager and Irish Whiskey Ambassador, received the coveted Irish Whiskey Brand Ambassador 2017 Award.

I am truly honoured to accept this award. My job involves championing Irish whiskey and its production process, but it never feels like work. Since I joined the industry almost 20 years ago, I have been proud to help tell the story of Irish whiskey to people from all around the world. It’s always great to help increase the interest in and passion for Irish whiskey.

I am delighted for the whole team tonight as we see that the industry is just as excited about quality Irish whiskey as we are.
– Gerard Garland: Advocacy Team Manager and Irish Whiskey Ambassador

Irish Distillers was also highly commended in the Brand Innovator category and Paul Wickham was highly commended in the Distillery Manager category. The night celebrated a wide range of established and new whiskey brands and distilleries, highlighting the continued renaissance that Irish whiskey is experiencing in recent years.

Irish Whiskey Association and Irish Distillers host industry mentoring event in Midleton Distillery

November 24, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ger Buckley, Head Cooper

Staff from 15 Irish whiskey distilleries took part in a landmark mentoring event in Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery as part of the Irish Whiskey Association’s (IWA) mentoring programme last week. The IWA mentoring programme involves established global Irish whiskey players such as Irish Distillers and Bushmills offering support to newer market entrants.

Peter Cooney, Boann Distillery, Ger Buckley, Head Cooper at Irish Distillers, Kevin O’Gorman, Head of Maturation, and Sally Anne Cooney, Boann Distillery.

Participants in the programme were provided with information and guidance on creating the finest quality Irish whiskey. Through practical demonstrations with established global Irish whiskey companies, participants learn the distillation, maturation and blending secrets that have driven the phenomenal success of this category on the global stage and that has seen Irish whiskey become the fastest growing spirits category in the world.

The workshop on cooperage and maturation aimed to provide new and recent entrants to the Irish whiskey industry with the opportunity to learn first-hand from some of the most experienced craftsmen in the Irish whiskey industry. Elements of the programme included sessions on wood purchasing, the skills of cooperage, cask handling, and the principles of maturation and blending.

Ireland’s whiskey renaissance has seen the number of operational distilleries increase from 4 to 18 in just four years. Increased competition is very welcome and is helping drive growth and it’s great to see that the competition in our industry is being matched by an amazing sense of solidarity.

Our ongoing mentoring programme and last week’s workshop is testament to this solidarity which has at its core a commitment to maintaining the high standards which form part of the rich and long history of Irish whiskey distilling.
– William Lavelle: Head of the Irish Whiskey Association

Here at Irish Distillers, we’re always eager to work with people who share our passion for Irish whiskey. Over the years, we’ve always gone out of our way to work with anyone who wanted advice or mentoring on whiskey projects and it’s great to be able to collaborate with even more people thanks to the IWA mentoring programme. Days like this when we get to share insights into our cooperage and maturation approach allow us all to build the positive culture of collaboration that is so prevalent within the industry.

Seeing the passion of those working in the emerging Irish whiskey distilleries first-hand is invigorating and knowing that the future of Irish whiskey is in safe hands is truly inspiring.
– Kevin O’Gorman: Head of Maturation at the Midleton Distillery

NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 7200

The Vintage expression has become a tradition at anCnoc and the recently released Vintage 2002 is a fitting testimony to the time-honoured methods employed in the production of this traditional yet distinctly modern single malt.
anCnoc Vintage 2002 has matured in Spanish and American oak casks and has been bottled in its most natural form neither chill-filtered nor coloured and as a result this dram may develop a light haze with the addition of water or if kept at a cold temperature. This haze is a natural characteristic of whisky that is non chill-filtered.
COLOUR: Bright Amber.
NOSE: Packed with notes of spicy Christmas cake, liquorice and toffee. Creamy vanilla and ground spices then follow, all wrapped up in the classic honey and citrus flavours so typical of anCnoc.
TASTE: Chocolate adds another level of sweetness contrasted by orange zest and a hint of leather. The finish is long and warming with a spicy kick.

As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
NOSE: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
COLOUR: Golden amber with straw highlights.
TASTE: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

SIZE: 700 ml.
THE SPIRIT OF OCTOMORE HAS BEEN DEFYING LOGIC FOR OVER FIFTEEN YEARS. THE “WHAT IF” MOMENT THAT ONCE SEEMED ALMOST ABSURD HAS PROGRESSIVELY MORPHED INTO SOMETHING ENDLESSLY ALLURING. NOW, SUDDENLY, THERE ARE EIGHT.
Led by the structural brilliance of 08.1, we can pause at this symbolic moment to enjoy a single malt masterclass. The experimental ethos, the muscular quality, is still very much to the fore, but there is enlightenment now, a sure-footed confidence. 08.1 is the necessary benchmark, the launch pad from which others can only follow. 08.1 reveals the astonishing subtlety of our phenolic universe, leading us along a pathway into a world like no other.
CHARACTER: Refined, confident, a little extra age has tempered some of the vitality but this dram has gained a classic, timeless feel.
COLOUR: Winter sun, crisp and bright.
NOSE: Initially smoke, tar, peat ash hint of muddiness/wet peat moss. Candied orange, pepper, chocolate, macaroon, vanilla fudge and lemon meringue pie.
PALATE: Liquid gold, soft and delicate texture from slow distillation. Superb fruit/smoke combination. On the lips there is soft kiss of salt spray, ozone fresh. Sweet oak gives vanilla, fudge, marzipan and walnut. Melon and citrus come through on a floral breeze. Many layered there is a lot find in this Octomore.
FINISH: Wow! Smoothness, sweetness and then smoke. A texture like no other, satin soft and devilishly warming. The American oak influence is in perfect tune with the smoke and soft fruits delicately, skilfully coaxed from the still during exceptionally slow distillation. Vanilla, honey, citrus rise up to be met with sea spray and leather, smoked mussels mix with autumn bracken and creme brulee.

IWSC Spirits Distributor Trophy – Maverick Drinks

Maverick Drinks has been named Spirits Distributor of the Year 2017 by the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) judges, announced at the recent Annual Awards Banquet hosted at Guildhall, London. This is the second year in a row that Maverick Drinks has claimed this title, and the third time in the four years since the distributor was established in 2013.

Maverick Drinks won its first Spirits Distributor of the Year trophy at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2014 as a newcomer to the industry – founded only one year before in 2013. In 2016, Maverick Drinks was again rewarded for its unwavering support and education of craft spirits with its second Spirits Distributor of the Year title.

It’s an incredible honour to be recognised by the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition. Awards like this push us to continue innovating and driving change in the drinks industry and it once again affirms that craft spirits with provenance and authenticity are increasingly what people are looking for. We’re very fortunate to work with some of the best brands and people in the business.
– Michael Vachon: Maverick Drinks’ head of brand development

This news comes following a huge year for Maverick Drinks, which has seen the recruitment of a new national partner management team, the launch of its industry-wide #forwarddrinking campaign and several additions to its distribution portfolio, including Wolfburn single malt Scotch whisky, Brenne French single malt whisky, Bluecoat American Dry Gin and That Boutique-y Gin Company – which also celebrated success at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, picking up the London Dry Gin Trophy for its Swedish Rose Gin from Hernö at the Annual Awards Banquet.

Maverick Drinks products are available to buy from:-

  • Master of Malt – That Boutique-y Gin
  • Master of Malt – Wolfburn single malt Scotch whisky

Atom Brands Named UK Gin Producer of the Year!

November 17, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

IWSC UK Gin Producer Trophy – Atom Brands

Atom Brands has been crowned the 2017 UK Gin Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). The accolade reflects excellence across the Atom Brands gin portfolio, with the title awarded as gin entries into the competition climbed 50% year-on-year.

Up against some of the biggest names in UK gin, including Diageo and Warner Edwards, the award recognises the wide range and quality of gin within the Atom Brands portfolio and signifies a huge triumph in a category that is experiencing tremendous growth. Gins within the Atom Brands portfolio include Bathtub Gin, That Boutique-y Gin Company’s selection of independently bottled and bespoke expressions, 1897 Quinine Gin (supporting Malaria No More UK) and the terroir-exploring Origin Single Estate Gin range.

Atom Brands also collected both of the available IWSC gin trophies at the Annual Awards Banquet last night – The London Dry Gin Trophy for That Boutique-y Gin Company’s Swedish Rose Gin from Hernö, and The Contemporary Gin Trophy for Bathtub Gin Navy-Strength. Atom Brands also performed strongly in the whisky category, listed as a finalist in the Scotch Whisky Producer of the Year shortlist.

We are incredibly proud to have been named UK Gin Producer of the Year by the International Wine & Spirit Competition judges. Our approach has always been simple – the pursuit of excellence without compromise, and this blind-judged result stands testament to the quality of our gin portfolio.

– Ben Ellefsen: Atom Brands’ Managing Director
