Fettercairn Looks To The Future Replanting Ancient Forest & With A New Oak bottling To Be Released In 2022!

July 23, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Fettercairn Forest – Our Vision_ image shows how newly planted forest will look 100+ years from now (new trees shown in lighter green)

Fettercairn Distillery has unveiled an exciting new project to replant an ancient forest as it sets its sights on producing its own single estate Scottish oak matured malt whiskies!

L to R Stewart Walker, Fettercairn Distillery Manager_ Rob Mulholland, Artist andGregg Glass, Whisky Maker visit the site of the newly planted forest

With over 13,000 sessile Quercus petraea and Quercus robur oak saplings planted next to the Distillery on the historic 8,500-acre Fasque Estate, the Fettercairn Forest is part of a wider commitment by whisky makers Whyte & Mackay to develop a sustainable future for responsibly sourced Scottish oak for each Distillery. Embracing all that the rich land in the heart of the Garden of Scotland has to offer and whilst nature takes its course, the initiative is to be marked this year by the creation of a major new sculpture from acclaimed environmental artist Rob Mulholland.

The programme was first conceived by Whisky Maker Gregg Glass 10 years ago and found its natural home at the Fettercairn Distillery. Gregg devoted himself to exploring how to incorporate Scottish Oak within the whisky making at Fettercairn, conducting numerous bench trials with wind-felled and responsibly sourced Scottish oak as well as extensive tests and experimentation in collaboration with a variety of experts across different industries.

The Distillery has already laid down whiskies in Scottish Oak, with a variety of cask types, in virgin oak from around its home in the foothills of the Cairngorms and plans to release the first commercially available Fettercairn Scottish Oak bottling next year. It is committed to establishing a series of new whiskies over the coming decades.

Rob Mulholland, environmental artist sampling Fettercairn

At Fettercairn, there’s been a continued history of exploration, innovation and balancing the best of tradition whilst challenging convention. As a whisky maker this project was a fantastic opportunity to explore the flavour potential of Fettercairn, incorporating all that the local area has to offer, utilising our local water, barley and now Scottish Oak.

This wide-ranging project is one with a vision for the future and is supporting multiple objectives across environmental responsibility, social purpose, forest and land management, supporting our local economy and skills, with the creation of unique, compelling whiskies.

We’re laying down the roots for the future for our continued ethos as whisky makers and our passion and responsibility for the local environment. The Fettercairn Forest is another step in the journey of whisky making at this incredible Distillery.
– Gregg Glass: Master Whisky Maker at Whyte and Mackay

Artwork for future generations

Famed for his mirrored statues and futuristic landscape installations, Rob Mulholland, the Glasgow born artist whose work has been exhibited around the world, is devoted to finding creative ways to articulate the relationship between humans and nature. Inspired by the story of this re-imagined forest, Rob has visualised a stunning artwork to be installed in September 2021.

The thought of this forest emerging from the ground in this beautiful setting – one of the most fertile areas of Scotland – over the next century is incredibly exciting, particularly when you consider all the tangible benefits that will come with the creation of a thriving, wildlife rich environment – from sustainable land management to the clear impact such a beautiful place can have on people’s physical and mental wellbeing.

My aim is to deepen the emotional connection between the people and this captivating land and create something that will still have relevance in 200 years when these trees will stand proud and tall – a legacy that can stand for even longer.
– Rob Mulholland: Artist

The aim of the sculpture project is to develop further installations across the forest and estate as the initiative evolves.

About Fettercairn

Located in the picturesque village of Fettercairn at the foothills of Scotland’s Cairngorm Mountains, this hidden gem is found among some of the most fertile farming land in the North-East of Scotland. With the purest of mountain water as an ingredient, it is almost no surprise that when the distillery was established by Sir Alexander Ramsay in 1824, the enterprising pioneer chose this location.

In the mid-1950s, the whisky-makers at Fettercairn experimented, seeking ways to create a purer expression of their spirit. They found that pouring water down the still cooled the copper, increasing condensation inside so only the lightest vapours could rise for collection. With this knowledge they fashioned a unique copper cooling ring around the neck of the stills drenching them with crystal clear mountain water – an ingenious and practical solution to creating their exceptional whisky, a technique which remains unique in Scotch whisky-making to this day.

About Rob Mulholland

Rob Mulholland is a sculptor and environmental artist based in Drymen, Scotland who exhibits throughout the U.K and world-wide. His practise explores the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Utilizing a wide variety of forms and materials his sculpture installations interact with their surroundings. He incorporates mirrored surfaces in his sculptures to reflect the given environment and alter the viewer’s perception of the space. The reflection is purposely distorted, inviting the viewer to question their individual relationship with their surroundings.

This nexus between people and the natural world is further developed in recent works such as One Flock which illuminates this symbiotic relationship. He is interested in elements of deconstruction and has interpreted this with sculptures such as Skytower and Evolve in which kinetic forces appear to have torn through and re-shaped the sculptural forms. These sculptures push the boundaries of physical structural engineering allowing him to explore and develop his practise further. His work is both gallery based and sited in public spaces.

Whyte & Mackay ‘Steps Up & Digs In’ With Their “Scottish Oak Programme”!

July 20, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Whyte & Mackay ‘Steps Up and Digs In’ With Scottish Oak Programme!

Whyte & Mackay is expanding its Scottish Oak Programme across its entire estate of distilleries to help establish the use of native oak as a quality raw material for the wider spirits industry, starting with Scotch.rtc

Spearheaded by Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass, the programme aims to establish the use of Scottish Oak widely among whisky makers while addressing some of the historical challenges around working with Scottish Oak, such as porosity, quality, consistency of the wood, and cost versus true value.

Typically casks used in the production of Scotch whisky are sourced from abroad, most commonly ex-Bourbon barrels from the USA, and European fortified wine casks from Portugal and Spain. Inspired by his time exploring local sawmills with his Grandfather on the Black Isle, Glass wanted to explore how to harness all that the local environment has to offer the whisky maker. He set about exploring the role Scottish Oak could play, and what it would take in terms of forestry management, and every skill required from harvest to cask creation.

When Gregg Glass joined Whyte and Mackay in 2016 he then began to implement the programme in earnest. He has developed partnerships with other organisations – including local landowning estates, sawmills and coopers – to create an initiative with the vision to one day be adopted by the Scotch Whisky industry.

Gregg Glass

The Scottish Oak Programme seeks to inspire change within the Scotch whisky industry. We want to champion the potential home-grown oak offers the spirits industry, and the incredible diversity of flavour it offers the whisky maker.

Our close relationships with industry partners mean we know the provenance of Scottish Oak and are even able to trace it right back to the individual tree. Through experimental whisky maturation and analytical trials, we can assess how the different variables – including growing conditions, drying and wood seasoning, oak type, coopering skills and heat treatment – can impact the flavour of the resulting whisky and there is a myriad of exciting flavour profiles to explore.
– Gregg Glass: Master Whisky Maker

As the programme develops, the adoption of Scottish Oak will grow to support local businesses and craftspeople and stimulate demand for traditional skills from forestry management to coopering, alongside apprenticeships and shared learning. A key aspect is the use of local sawmills and adapting historical sawmill practice and kit, some dating back to the 1930s, to equip local businesses with the tools required to process Scottish Oak, ensuring our local skilled craftspeople have what they need to apply their skill to locally sourced Oak.

Glass’ vision looks not only to sourcing oak for cask production, but to encouraging a circular economy and future-proofing Scottish Oak for the next generation of whisky makers. To that end, the programme has developed a planting scheme which has already seen over 15,000 trees replanted across Scotland. In addition, Glass and his partners are establishing dedicated oak forests that are carefully looked after to ensure longevity.

In 2019, Whyte & Mackay’s experimental arm, Whisky Works, launched its first Scottish Oak part-finished expression suitably named ‘King of Trees’. The 10-year-old blended Highland malt was created using wood from two 200-year-old wind-felled Scottish Oak tree to make one cask. The whisky maker is set to announce a second Scottish Oak release under its Fettercairn brand later this year.

Owned by Tonnellerie Francois Freres Group, Speyside Cooperage Ltd was established in 1947 in the heart of malt whisky trail. We now have cooperages in Tullibody in Clackmannanshire and Shepherdsville in Kentucky as we continue to preserve the time-honoured craft of coopering by continually training apprentices at all our sites.

Whilst we supply and cooper casks mainly built from American and European oak to the drinks industry worldwide in many sizes and for many liquids, the building of Scottish oak casks is something very different for us.

From the selecting of trees, to the sawmilling, air drying and coopering of the oak grown in Scotland for over 100 years, it is a project we are very proud to have been part of with Gregg and Whyte & Mackay. We look forward to producing casks from local forests in Scotland for generations to come.
– Andrew Russell: General Manager at Speyside Cooperage Ltd

The Scottish Oak Programme is one part of Whyte & Mackay’s commitment to a sustainable future for whisky making. The responsible sourcing of Scottish Oak allows full traceability, will create tree planting initiatives in rural and urban communities, and help support forest stewardship across Scotland.

The whisky maker’s sustainability agenda is to be published in an upcoming Green Print report, which lays out their approach towards carbon neutrality by 2030 and the Scottish Whisky Association’s target to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, ahead of the Scottish Government’s target of 2045.

Sampling The Gladstone Axe Malt Whiskies – Drams With An ‘Edge’!

July 16, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Sampling The Gladstone Axe Malt Whiskies – Drams With An ‘Edge’!

Fine wine and spirits company, Biggar and Leith recently launched an exciting new brand: The Gladstone Axe Malt Whisky. Named after four-times Prime Minister, William Gladstone, the whisky is a modern twist on classic Scotch. There are two expressions in the range – The Gladstone Axe American Oak and The Gladstone Axe The Black Axe, both bottled in an iconic bottle which tells the story of William Gladstone in a contemporary way.

The whiskies have been carefully selected from the Highlands and Islay to create two easy-drinking smooth blends made up of 14 single malts. The whiskies were created in honour of William Gladstone by his great-great-great Grandson, Elwyn Gladstone, Founder of Biggar and Leith and Malfy Gin.

The Gladstone Axe American Oak is aged and finished in American Oak Bourbon barrels and blended from whiskies from 14 different Highland and Islay single malt distilleries. The Black Axe has a higher proportion of Islay malts to add just a touch of smoky character.

Gladstone Axe Whisky – American Oak and The Black Axe

With growing interest in blended malt whiskies amongst younger consumers globally, The Gladstone Axe presents an exciting opportunity as an approachable, mixable malt blend for a new generation of whisky drinkers.

‘Gladstoneaxe’ has kindly sent me a couple of samples to try. Thanks gladstoneaxe.com / @gladstoneaxe!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – American Oak Blended Malt Whisky (41%)

Nose: Creamy toffee and vanilla, woody oak coupled with buttery popcorn.

Palate: Sweet popcorn and toffee.

Finish: Smooth, light finish with some growing peppery spice.

Overall: Quite untamed with an attractive rough n’ ready palate!

Tasting Notes – The Black Axe Blended Malt Whisky (41%)

Nose: Buttery popcorn with a little smoke.

Palate: Sweet popcorn and faint wisps of smoke.

Finish: Black treacle blended with some spicy punch ending in tobacco dryness.

Overall: Of the two The Black Axe is nicest taken neat – I think because of the subtle smokiness.

These two drams make an excellent choice as a mixer whisky. Either one makes for a nicely satisfying ol’ fashioned – I know ‘cos I tried ’em!

RRP: £32 for a 70cl bottle ABV: 41%

Bourbon Alliance Calls On Prime Minister Boris Johnson & Trade Secretary Liz Truss To ‘Free The Spirit’

July 7, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

‘Free The Spirit’!

The The Bourbon Alliance has submitted official comments to the UK Department of International Trade, outlining the negative impacts its retaliatory 25% tariff on Bourbon and other American Whiskeys are having on the UK’s hospitality sector, and urging for their immediate removal.

The The Bourbon Alliance is a coalition of industry stakeholders whose livelihoods depend on being able to import US Whiskey into the UK. Supporters of the campaign to #FreeTheSpirit include some of the best known, household names, as well as an army of independent distillers, hospitality venues across the UK, retailers, distributors, festival organisers, and Bourbon fans.

The campaign – that includes Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Brown-Forman and an army of craft distillers, restaurants and pubs, retailers, wholesalers, and US Whiskey fans – called on the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP and Trade Secretary, Rt Hon Liz Truss MP to make good on their promises and cut the tariffs immediately.

The The Bourbon Alliance encouraged the UK Government to do “the right thing and deliver on Prime Minster Boris Johnson’s statement regarding the tariff.” During a campaign visit to a Scotch Whisky distillery in the 2019 general election campaign, the Prime Minister said ‘once we come out of the EU, those tariffs will not apply’ – the Alliance is now calling on the PM to deliver this promise. The Alliance also urged the Government’s Trade Secretary, Liz Truss to deliver on her own promise to ‘see an urgent settlement of the dispute so we can remove these retaliatory tariffs on things like bourbon’. The Alliance said they hoped that “recent momentum in trans-Atlantic trade, and the successful resolution of the Boeing-Airbus dispute would pave the way for a zero-to-zero trade agreement between the US and the UK”.

Since the UK first imposed its tariffs on American Whiskeys in June 2018, American Whiskey exports to the UK declined by 53%. Following the recent five-year suspension of tariffs on UK and US distilled spirits, including Scotch Whisky, in the WTO Boeing-Airbus disputes, the UK’s imposition of a 25% tariff on American Whiskeys makes it the only spirits category subject to tariffs in connection to ongoing transatlantic trade disputes.

The UK has chosen to maintain these tariffs since leaving the EU – and before 31 December 2020 British consumers were footing the bill, fronting 22.8% of the total EU whiskey tariffs (on €203m of US exports) and continue to be collateral damage in the ongoing UK-US dispute over steel.

The hospitality industry has been hit harder by the pandemic than almost any other sector in the UK; venues have been closed for the majority of the year with 10,000 licensed premises shutting their doors for good. It’s time for the UK Government to act in the national interest and remove these tariffs. These retaliatory tariffs don’t help the UK – in fact, investment has gone elsewhere in the world, UK consumers have paid over £55m in tariffs on imported American Whiskies and businesses like mine have not been able to launch in the UK.

Let’s build on the momentum in trans-Atlantic trade discussions, and to remove the tariffs to help reboot the UK economy.
– Martha Dalton: Founder of the Bourbon Alliance and Director of Never Say Die Bourbon

We have been engulfed in a trade war that has nothing to do with us and our consumers. These tariffs have meant our members are not only footing the bill for Europe but are unable to enjoy the Bourbon they love.

On top of this, it has had a massive impact on consumer choice and a detrimental effect to those UK businesses who depend on it, as well as the wider UK economy.
– Andrew Watson: Co-Founder of the British Bourbon Society

As the owner of a UK based distributor of American Whiskey, I know from first-hand experience that US distillers and drinks conglomerates have been channelling more or all of their marketing dollars to projects at home and in Asia. This is lost stimulus that the UK drinks industry, associated sectors and our workers are not benefitting from. Whilst the tariff has undoubtably made trading conditions for my business more challenging and increased the risk for our trade customers to back our category.

The ultimate victims are the loyal consumers of American whiskey who for the last 3 years and counting have been punished with these tariffs. The 25% ‘tax’ is levied on not just the whiskey but the freight from the US and shipping insurance, the consumer also pays 20% vat on top. This was an EU tariff, it’s now a UK tariff and their continuation looks like very bad value for UK consumers and businesses alike.
– Nathan Dawes: Co-Founder of American Whiskey distributor, N10 Bourbons

In the UK we have always had a love affair with American Whiskey and never more so than now. The distilling scene in the USA has never been more exciting and we in the UK are not able to tap into this because we are held back by these tariffs. We are not just penalising the American government with these taxes but we are penalising our own consumers to whom the costs of these ridiculous tariffs are being passed on.

We already have some of the highest duty rates on alcohol in the UK and this is just one more tax. Now we have left the EU, should we not be creating better alliances with other countries rather than putting up more walls?
– Dawn Davies MW: Head Buyer, Speciality Drinks
