The Whisky Barrel has 9 New additions to it’s range this week with whiskies from the Highland, Island, Islay and Speyside regions.

The brands include Benriach, Bunnahabhain, Glendronach, Highland Park, Kilchoman & Royal Lochnagar.

The ages of the new whiskies range from 17 to 25 Year Old malts.

Summary: Single refill bourbon hogshead yielding 311 bottles. "Pinball Machine high ball cascade" Highland Park Highland Park Distillery is the most northerly malt whisky distillery in Scotland  and the closest Scottish distillery to the Arctic Circle. Highland Park was established in 1798 and is one of the few Scottish distilleries which continues to malt barley on its own traditional malting floors and to use locally cut peat from Hobbister Moor in its malt kiln. The distillery visitor centre welcomes visitors and offers distillery tours. No tasting notes at present.

Summary: 100% oloroso sherry wood matured Kilchoman available for the first time as a core release with smart new packaging. 2012 bottling of the 5 year old Islay single malt Scotch limited to 6,000 bottles. Pre-Order, Shipping mid-April 2012. Kilchoman Kilchoman Distillery was established by Anthony Wills in 2005 at Rockside Farm near the centuries old Kilchoman Cross and the old Kilchoman Church on the Isle of Islay. Kilchoman Distillery is a malt whisky distillery which malts barley grown in Rockside fields and bottles Kilchoman single malt whisky at the distillery using local Islay water. Field to bottle. Kilchoman is the newest and most westerly of Islay’s distilleries and with just two small stills it is one of the smallest working distilleries in Scotland. Nose: Soft peaty aromas and a blend of soft fruits and spice. Palate: An initial sweetness is followed by soft peaty aromas, mixed fruits and spice. Finish: Long and clean with a character and richness that belies its tender age.

Summary: Heavily peated single malt Scotch from Benriach distillery in Speyside. Matured for 25 years and bottled at natural colour and non chill filtered. Benriach John Duff commissioned the Elgin based architect Charles C. Doig to design Benriach Distillery which was duly established in 1898 just south of Elgin and complete with a siding connecting Benriach Distillery directly to the great North of Scotland Railway and the scotch blenders down south. But Benriach Distillery opened just as the whisky bubble burst and was forced to closed in 1900 and remained closed until 1965. Benriach’s maltings did continued to operate but finally closed in 1999. An iconic Scottish malt whisky distillery complete with a Doig pagoda roof over the malt kiln. The Benriach Distillery range includes limited releases of triple distilled, peated and un-peated single malt whiskies. Benriach Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Nose: Elegant aromas of ripe pineapple, fresh mountain herbs and a profusion of sweet peat. A huge pungent blast of peat smoke emerges, partnering the peated element perfectly. Full bodied and audacious. Palate: A fantastic fusion of rich peat and smouldering embers bound together by fresh herbs – oregano, aniseed and chicory in particular. Palate: Initially dry roasted nutty flavours flow over the palate. This advances to become a heavy peaty affair. Subtle notes of dried raisins and candied fruit. Clean and very enticing with the dominant peat flavours lingering on the palate. Smooth and very long.

To commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee (1952-2012) TheWhiskyBarrel.com present our second release of Jubilee Malt, this time Extra Regal. Islay single malt Scotch distilled at the Bunnhabhain distillery on 17th December 1990 and bottled 29th March 2012. Just 200 bottles at full strength have been released featuring a rather splendid Crown Jewel. Bunnahabhain Bunnahabhain Distillery was established in 1881 on the north eastern tip of the Isle of Islay by the shore of Bunnahabhain Bay and overlooking the Sound of Islay. All the building materials were transported by puffer and unloaded at the distillery pier. Now tucked away at the end of the single track ‘main’ road with spectacular scenery all the way. Bunnahabhain Distillery is equipped with four huge pear shaped stills and produces Scottish malt whisky which is released in blends and single malts. Visitors are welcomed at the distillery visitor centre and distillery cottages are available for holiday lets. A participant in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music.    Nose: Huge sherry! Very sweet dried fruits, grapefruit and pineapple, butterscotch, green apple orchard pollen leading to closing seaside brine. Palate: Incredibly clean, huge sherry overload explodes on the mouth, great proof in this one. Oily mouth feel, ash, menthol, with long warming spices and butter – excellent balance leading to a soft finish of runny honey and more sherry!

Summary: 9 year old single cask #644. To celebrate 60 years reign of Queen Elizabeth, the label features the official Diamond Jubilee 2012 logo. Royal Lochnagar Highland whisky Distillery is located just a mile from Balmoral Castle, the Royal families official Scottish residence. Royal Lochnagar James Robertson established the original Royal Lochnagar Distillery on the north bank of the River Dee in 1823. Following a fire in 1826 he opened a new Royal Lochnagar Distillery close by the southern banks of the River Dee and in the shadow of Lochnagar Mountain which also supplied the distillery with water from wells on its lower slopes. Royal Lochnagar can claim the royal prefix, a royal warrant and royal neighbours in the summer time. Royal Lochnagar Distillery is a traditional stone built farm-yard style malt whisky distillery complete with a malt kiln and pagoda roof, two stills, square red brick chimney and steamy worm tubs.  The Royal Lochnagar Distillery visitor centre welcomes visitors and offers distillery tours. Glen Grant Glen Grant Distillery is a Speyside malt whisky distillery situated in Rothes.  Established in 1840 by brothers James and John Grant, the business prospered and in 1897 Glen Grant No. 2 distillery was established across the road in order to meet the high demand for Glen Grant whisky. During the late nineteenth century a Victorian garden was laid out in the valley behind the distillery and is now open to distillery visitors. Glen Grant Distillery has a visitor centre and offers distillery tours. Glen Grant Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. No tasting notes present.

Summary: Glendronach single casks Batch 4. Single Pedro Ximénez sherry puncheon #1032. 20 year old single malt Scotch from the Glendronach Distillery in Speyside. Distilled August 1990. Limited to 728 numbered bottles. Glendronach Glendronach malt whisky distillery was established north east of Huntley in Scotland’s Highland whisky region by James Allardice in 1826. The malting floors at Glendronach Distillery closed in 1996 and it was the last distillery in Scotland to heat its stills directly with flames from a coal-fired furnace, until it had to comply with new regulations in 2005. Glendronach Distillery is resplendent with a traditional cask iron mash tun, wooden washbacks, four stills matures its malt whisky in top quality sherry casks. Glendronach Distillery has a distillery visitor centre offering a range of distillery tours and the distillery participates is the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Nose: Hints of leather and polished mahogany intermingle with a lively sweet sherry influence partnered with stewed prunes. Palate: Smooth, and well rounded. Sweet and oily. Chocolate sauce with pronounced confectionary elements.
