Invergordon Single Grain Whisky 25 Year Old / Hunter Laing Sovereign Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: 25 Year Old Strength: 58.1% Vintage: 1988 Bottler: Summary: The Hunter Laing Sovereign Single Grain bottlings are increasingly becoming firm favourites with Whisky enthusiasts around the globe. Hunter Laing select only the finest casks which have been lying untouched in cold, dark and damp Scottish warehouses for many decades. Typically their aged Single Grain whiskies have a deliciously sweet and distinctly fruity character as a result of many years in the finest oak casks during maturation. Nose: rich with spiced sultana and butterscotch concentrate; Taste: fabulous delivery: arrives silky and soft and immediately explodes into an unbelievable couldron on spices and fruit; Finish: more mooerish magnificence on a vague fruit and rape seed honey theme; Balance: ignore the fact this is grain and not malt, just grab yourself a bottle of something rather beautiful. © Tasting Notes from Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. |

Strathclyde Single Grain Whisky 36 Year Old / Hunter Laing Sovereign Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: 36 Year Old Strength: 58.1% Vintage: 1977 Bottler: Summary: The Hunter Laing Sovereign Single Grain bottlings are increasingly becoming firm favourites with Whisky enthusiasts around the globe. Hunter Laing select only the finest casks which have been lying untouched in cold, dark and damp Scottish warehouses for many decades. Typically their aged Single Grain whiskies have a deliciously sweet and distinctly fruity character as a result of many years in the finest oak casks during maturation. Nose: just about enough thickening grain – and alcohol to make this into a whisky. Otherwise the nose is pure cream oloroso, of the fruitiest variety possible; Taste: the delivery is one mouth coating homage to the gods of sherry, slightly sticky, gently sweetened and dripping in sharp grape and emboldened by a vague but busy spiciness. And so it continues…; Finish: the finish is all about offering balance as the grape at last punches itself out. The oak come into its own now, a kind of spiced Cadbury’s fruit and nut candy bar; Balance: those who fell in love with Marcallan all those years back because of its faultlessly silky sherry influence are about to have their hears won again. It’ll be love at first flight… © Tasting Notes from Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. |

Bruichladdich / Port-charlotte Islay Barley 2008 Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 50% Summary: PORT CHARLOTTE ISLAY BARLEY REPRESENTS A MILESTONE. FOR THE FIRST TIME, PERHAPS IN THE ISLAND’S HISTORY, A HEAVILY-PEATED SINGLE MALT HAS BEEN DISTILLED USING ISLAY-GROWN BARLEY. The wind-driven rain that lashes Islay's fields, and the Atlantic air breathed by the casks as they mature by the shores of Loch Indaal, gives the whisky its signature salty, citrus tang. Harvested in Sepetember 2008 from the farms at Coull, Kynagarry, Island, Rockside, Starchmill & Sunderland, peated to 40 PPM, then distilled in December of the same year, this is a whisky of flawless provenance. A true Ileach. Character: Absolutely flawless construction and balance. Young, confident, zesty and absolutely delightful, the texture is smooth, succulent and stimulating. Colour: Gilded lily. Nose: Totally disarming considering the age of the spirit. It opens with bracken and bluebells, then the warm crisp peat-dried barley with the smokiness drifting sensuously from the glass shadowed by a salt sea breeze. The brilliant aroma of toasted oak sugars combines with the succulent soft fruits from slow distillation. You will find guava, papaya and kiwi with a squeeze of lemon. It’s feisty, it’s fresh, it’s smoky, sweet, minty and marine. Palate: The warmth of the spirit is impressive, not aggressive. It’s incredible. You have the dryness of the peat smoke together with soft fruits splashed with sea spray, all held in a crunchy basket of caramelised wood sugars sprinkled with lemon and pepper. It is a rare and special experience to taste a spirit that is 100% Islay, but also shining through is the artisanal skill of our distillers who, using the original Victorian equipment, are creating the most exciting single malts in the world today. Finish: Parting from a special one is never easy, especially when you have enjoyed their company, lingering with every drop in the glass. Kick back and relax – the aromatics and flavours will stay with you for some time. Mood: Enjoy your spiritual visit to Islay, this magical rock in the Atlantic Ocean where our single malts sleep to the sound of the sea. |

Bruichladdich / Octomore 063/ 258 Ppm Islay Barley 2009 Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 64% Summary: FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME WE ARE PROUD TO RELEASE OCTOMORE WHISKY DISTILLED FROM 100% ISLAY BARLEY AND HARVESTED IN 2008 BY FARMER JAMES BROWN AT LORGBA, A SINGLE FIELD ON HIS OCTOMORE FARM. Peated to a stratospheric 258ppm, the highest ever released in the industry, this extraordinary dram embodies its island origins and carries its phenol count with an effortless grace. High on the hill above Loch Indaal, Octomore faces the rage of Atlantic weather systems and once housed its own farm distillery, most likely producing a very heavily peated spirit from home-grown barley. In homage to its origins, this is Octomore of Octomore. Character: Mesmerising in its potency – with perfect balance. The texture is like warm honey, the taste rich with a depth of character that can only be found on Islay. Colour: Autumn sunshine – citrine. Nose: It opens with the call of the sea, the thundering west coast waves driving a gentle mist onto the moorland and tempting the wild plants to release their unique aromas. Notes of myrtle, meadowsweet, mint and heather flowers drift across the nose. Wild thyme and red clover dance in perfect harmony with the strong uplifting peatiness of the Islay grown barley. It’s exhilarating, and seriously dramatic. Palate: When the heat of the peat fires cool there is a spontaneous detonation of soft red grapes, cherries, Russian toffee, bitter chocolate, maple syrup and mellow oak. It is a taste like no other, a whisky cut loose, unhindered, unchanged. This is sorcery. Finish: Long and strong, it warms the soul and lifts the heart. It evokes memories of those early years when the sweat of men instilled the spirit with a unique character. Join us as we look to the past, celebrating our Islay DNA while journeying into the future in a never-ending quest for the rainbow’s end. Mood: The flavours just keep evolving to the point where it is driving you crazy with joy and you just want to tell the world what is happening. Relax and keep it to yourself – it’s not for sharing and when the glass is empty you will feel like the ultimate warrior. |

Mosstowie – 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 33 Year Old Strength: 46% Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines. AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Freshly washed wool and hessian. With hints of polished oak, beeswax and orange peel. TASTE WITHOUT WATER: A sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour. Pepper and ash notes linger. AROMA WITH WATER: Creamy hot chocolate aromas with spiced orange and cardamom notes. TASTE WITH WATER: Cinnamon and Clove influences with hints of Cedar wood. |

Laphroaig – Cairdeas Origin 2012 Bottling Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 51.2% Summary: First released at the Feis Ile 2012, Laphroaig Cairdeas Origin was bottled to celebrate 18 years of the Friends of Laphroaig program. Combining the original liquid used to first create Cairdeas along with newer Laphroaig spirit that has been fully matured in quarter casks. Although there is no age statement on the bottle, weve been told by those-in-the-know that Laphroaig Cairdeas is new spirit that was placed into small quarter casks, enjoying a very intense maturation for seven years, that was then blended (50:50) with another special whisky the chaps at Laphroaig had been quietly maturing for between 13 and 21 years old. Both whiskies were fine expressions of Laphroaig in their own right, but when blended together something exceptional emerged as befits this 18th anniversary of the FOL club. Colour: Golden Barley. Nose: Distinctly Laphroaig – iodine, peat, smoke etc. but with quite a bit of citrus (Orange & Apples) and a hint of creamy fudge. Taste: A good mixture of Laphroaig medicinal, peat, slight ginger, apples and hints of vanilla sweetness. Finish: Quite long with peat, iodine and chocolatey coffee. |

Macallan – Diamond Jubilee Bottling Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: Strength: 52% Summary: This specially designed bottle bears a unique image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by the sculptor Arnold Machin. With only 2012 bottles available, and like their previous commemorative royal bottling’s, this edition is expected to be highly sought after by collectors from the worlds of whisky and art. Nose: Vanilla is the first to show, sweet to a point, yet shows maturity. Citrus fruits hang on to the coattails, (orange, apple, hints of lemon), almost appear when they are required. The cask influences then appear, resinous, never overbearing, changing to show polished oak, aged, reminiscent of a once exquisite dining room. Palate: Rich dried fruits open up to show their hand. Raisin drives the character in a non-nonsense manner. It is evident it is not alone, figs and dates, are the lesser players of the group. As they converse, treacle toffee takes a bow followed by the courtiers, ginger and clove. Like a finale the grand lady enters, Oak – refined, polished, elegant, overlooking all. Finish: Long, meanders, in no hurry to leave. |

The first whisky, matured in American oak sherry seasoned casks, is a vibrant gold spirit offering a lemon and orange citrus nose. Ginger and summer berries flit in the background showing the exuberance of youth while hinting at a founding level of maturity. Matured in Spanish sherry seasoned oak casks, the second whisky is a splendid mahogany spirit and presents a richly mature, elegant and refined nose. Glenlossie – 9 Year Old Managers Choice Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 9 Year Old Strength: 59.10% Summary: Nose: a delicate trace of lime to the barley: what an understated, fragile, uber sexy nose…; Taste: unusual in that the first wave on delivery appears to be a thin, oily note. This is promptly followed by the young barley water, threatening a sharpness but dampened by the lightest scattering of icing sugar; mouth watering, and youthful; Finish: even with the custard powder arrival, never a hint of anything that is remotely non kindergarten; Balance: one of the most impressive examples of Speyside malt, apparently not even out of nappies but treating you to a spectacular display of barley in all its beauty. Confirmation, barley needed, that with Clynelish, this has to be Diageo’s most under-rated distillery. © Jim Murrays – 2012 Whisky Bible. |

Glenrothes – 21 Year Old – Old & Rare Edition Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 21 Year Old Strength: 56.10% Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angel’s share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see it’s pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. By so doing, they leave in the entire Distillers’ preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish – self evident when you remove the cork. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated. Nose: full of dark fruits and lively spices on the nose initially – it mellows as it warms to tobacco smells and a damp whisky warehouse character. Palate: on the palate the sherry cask influences it early with more (now macerated) fruit – then sweet barley, more tobacco, vanilla and mocha flavours alternatively appear. Finish: the finish is more vanill’d now plus late cough drop style warming (now menthol!) spices. |

Macallan – Old Malt Cask 25 Year Old/15th Anniversary Edition Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 25 Year Old Strength: 51.4% Summary: To conclude a very rewarding year for me, professionally and personally, Hunter Laing & Co Ltd. is releasing two special new lines. The first of these is an Anniversary series of six casks, bottled to celebrate fifteen years of our flagship Old Malt Cask brand. Together with my sons Scott and Andrew, as well as our Master Blender Tom Aitken, I have selected casks from our maturing stocks which each do justice to the labels fifteen year milestone. These cask-strength Anniversary bottlings are presented in green glass with wooden gift boxes, and are finished in the original-style labels to pay homage to the earliest Old Malt Cask releases. Choosing these casks allowed me to reflect with pride on my last fifteen years as a single cask bottler and, in reviewing our stocks, to look forward with relish to the next fifteen years of the Old Malt Cask. Stuart Laing. |

Old Pulteney – 1990 Vintage Country: Scotland Region: Highlands Age: 23 Year Old Strength: 46% Summary: Old Pulteney 1990 has been matured in hand selected American oak ex-Bourbon barrels and Spanish oak ex-Sherry butts. The casks previously held heavily peated malt which gives this Vintage a slight smoky character. Appearance: Polished amber. Aroma: Subtle, warm wood smoke envelopes the sweetness of peardrops & crunchy green apples. Fragrant floral notes, fresh lemon zest & honey are followed by a spicy & fruity touch of ex-sherry casks. Taste: Full bodied & rich. The initial sweet honey note is quickly followed by a wave of thick peat smoke, joined a moment later by a spicy vanilla, toffee & rum smoked raisins. OLD PULTENEY DISTILLERY Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wicks celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly on the British mainland. At a time when road links to the town were yet to be established, the distillery was dependent on the sea for its supply of barley and for the shipping out of its malt whisky. Wick became known for the barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) which left the port in vast numbers. The distillery itself has an absorbing history, with its unique stills defying convention to this day. The wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a swan neck. Legend has it that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply decided to cut the top off! The Old Pulteney bottle now incorporates a bulbous neck to reflect the shape of the stills. Over time, the distillery has passed through the hands of various owners, and even closed during times of trouble for the industry in 1930. Luckily, the repeal of an often forgotten period of prohibition in 1947 saw the welcome resumption of whisky production, with the distillery changing ownership a number of times, before its purchase by Inver House Distillers in 1995. Throughout this history what has endured is the quality of the whisky. Traditional craftsmanship and the distillerys windswept location continue to contribute to the award-winning whisky that is Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky. |

Port Ellen – 34 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: 34 Year Old Strength: 46% Summary: Port Ellen is one of the three main villages on Islay and one of the two ferry terminals on the island. The distillery was expanded in the 1960s and temporarily closed in 1983. Its white painted buildings form a street close to the seashore. Only peat which was dug in the district was used in the drying and the water was taken from two lochs in the nearby hills, the principal one used for distilling purposes being noted locally for its purity. Next to the distillery is a modern Maltings which exudes pungent peat smoke. AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Smoky and liquorice influences with fruity undertones and hints of pear. A fresh sea breeze aroma. TASTE WITHOUT WATER: Sweet, with peat smoke elements emerging followed by hints of aniseed. Some hints of kippers linger. AROMA WITH WATER: Butterscotch and pear, with slight medicinal notes. Reminiscent of a wooden fish box. TASTE WITH WATER: Dry ash flavours balanced with salty brine notes. |
