Glenlochy / Cadenheads Edition 17 Year Old / 1977 Vintage Country: Scotland Region: Highlands Age: Strength: 61.8% Summary: Founded in 1898 by David McAndies, The Glenlochy Distillery commenced production in 1901, and it had been part of Diageo from 1953 until its transfer to Scotish Malt Distilleries Co. Production ceased in 1983, when the distillery was definitely mothballed, just like so many others in that decade. The premises have been acquired by a local hotel group, West Coast Inns Ltd, that developed the site commercially, only retaining the kiln and the pagoda roof, which are declared historic buildings. The house style is fruity, verging towards sweet, exotic fruitiness and coconut, vanilla and honey characters. The peat is delicate, and soft. Barring a few independent bottlings (such as Gordon & MacPhail's) and an edition in Diageo's Rare Malts series, distillery bottlings are extremely rare and hard to find. Nose: Coffee; leafy. Palate: Green, floral, fresh. Another good cask with plenty of the grassy freshness the distillery was famed for. |

Paul John / Brilliance Country: Indian Region: Indian Age: Strength: 46%. Summary: A non-peated Indian Single Malt Whisky. Nose: a complex amalgam of nougat, spotted dog pudding (sans sultanas!) and orange blossom honey with the vanilla spinning tangled webs just beneath. Honey is captured as the bourbon element expands; a delicate gristiness ushers in a freshness to the custard tart; Taste: the mouth feel exudes star quality with the barley generating all kinds of juicy riches with the light Demerara sugars forming an elegant accompaniment. A coppery spine is soon carrying the barley in varied forms while a gorgeous cocoa sub strata heralds in the spices which buzz the taste buds at will; Finish: beautifully relaxed: a light tingle from the spices pulses contentedly, the vanillas gather in deeper intensity yet the barley and copper stretches to the end; Balance: yet another astonishing malt from India. 94.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. |

Paul John / Classic Select Cask Country: Indian Region: Indian Age: Strength: 55.2%. Summary: The Paul John Classic Select Malt is the taster's expression with a high nod in bright finish. Every sniff and sip wind-sweeps the mystique of the meandering waterways and tales of yore, wafting from the oceanfront coast of Goa. This Classic Select Cask is distantly handcrafted and non-chilled filtered, in chaste tradition, aged undisturbed in American White-Oak ex Bourbon barrels. Nose: Like Brilliance, but turned up a notch. More vanilla, more cake batter, more fruity sweets and more spice. Stacks of cereal, with rolled oats, freshly milled barley and lots of fruit – apples, pears and hints of the more tropical: pineapples and Refresher chews (without the fizzy sherbert middle). With that there is sweet lemon drizzle cake, window putty and a light gluey note, as well as sweet pastry cream. Palate: Sharp cinnamon up front: fireball gobstoppers and Hot Tamales. It calms down to show off apple sauce and sweet vanilla, as well as spiced, heavily buttered pastry with a grind of black pepper. Behind that, squirty cream from a can on top of a bag of Haribo. Water kills the heat and ups the sweetness, revealing caraway and spirity notes, along with even more vanilla. Finish: Haribo fruitiness fades to spicy oak. |

Tomintoul / 16 Year Old Single Malt Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 16 Year Old Strength: 40% Summary: Pure ingredients and the natural environment add to smooth and mellow character of our award-winning Tomintoul Speyside Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky, “the gentle dram”. Multi-award winning Tomintoul Speyside Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aged 16 Years has been lovingly crafted, from a selection of the finest bourbon casks, each aged for at least sixteen years. Nose: a fruity concoction of apples and pears topped with vanilla ice cream; even the vaguest hint of something smoky…one of the noses of the year…; Taste: soft, indeed every bit as gentle as the label promises, as the light oils coat the palate with a fabulously intense and delicately sweetened barley skin. The skeleton is playful oak; Finish: a wonderful, multi-layered interplay between malt and oak-vanillas. Long, curiously spice-free, increasingly dry but hugely sophisticated…; Balance: confirms Tomtintoul’s ability to dice with greatness. |

Douglas Laing / The Christmas Big Peat 2011 Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 57.8% Summary: HISTORICALLY WE CALL THIS – WHISPER IT – A VATTED MALT, BLONDE IN THE BOTTLE – BUT WITH A BIG PEAT KICK A SMALL BATCH BOTTLING TRADITIONALLY UNCHILL FILTERED CONTAINING ONLY ISLAY MALT WHISKIES! But what exactly is a Vatted Malt? It is what the Scotch Whisky industry has traditionally called “a marriage of Malts”. Big Peat contains Malt Whisky ONLY from the island of Islay – some say it’s the ultimate taste of Islay! Big Peat is a feisty Islay character has a sweet side too – ‘he’ carries a big peaty (“phenolic”), beachy, oceanic, rather ashy selection of malts only from the island of Islay. We do not chill filter – we prefer a more old fashioned traditional approach – so you will detect a massive amplification of sea-faring qualities on the nose, palate, and finish Nose: just one of those noses where it takes a tremendous act of will to put the glass down…the interplay between the salts and sugars, the counterweights between the different varieties of phenols themselves; Taste: when the delivery strikes home with the oils, phenols and sugars in immediate harmony, you know you are in for an experience. The question is: can it keep this quality to the end? Finish: …indeed it can! In fact, it improves and so complex and tantalising are those astonishing Demerara and peaty riches, it is hard to quite know where the end begins. A number of teasing bourbon tones, on the liquorice and hickory side – perhaps with a hint of honey – stokes the fireside complexity further…; Balance: I haven’t got a television these days as my life is simply too busy. And with entertainment like this in the glass to keep you occupied, who needs one…? I doubt if any Christmas special on the box came remotely close to matching this…! |

Hunter Laing Sovereign / 36 Year Old Strathclyde Single Grain Whisky Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: 36 Year Old Strength: 58.1% Vintage: 1977 Bottler: Summary: The Hunter Laing Sovereign Single Grain bottlings are increasingly becoming firm favourites with Whisky enthusiasts around the globe. Hunter Laing select only the finest casks which have been lying untouched in cold, dark and damp Scottish warehouses for many decades. Typically their aged Single Grain whiskies have a deliciously sweet and distinctly fruity character as a result of many years in the finest oak casks during maturation. Nose: just about enough thickening grain – and alcohol to make this into a whisky. Otherwise the nose is pure cream oloroso, of the fruitiest variety possible; Taste: the delivery is one mouth coating homage to the gods of sherry, slightly sticky, gently sweetened and dripping in sharp grape and emboldened by a vague but busy spiciness. And so it continues…; Finish: the finish is all about offering balance as the grape at last punches itself out. The oak come into its own now, a kind of spiced Cadbury’s fruit and nut candy bar; Balance: those who fell in love with Marcallan all those years back because of its faultlessly silky sherry influence are about to have their hears won again. It’ll be love at first flight… © Tasting Notes from Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. |

Compass Box – Last Vatted Malt Country: Scotland Region: IslaySpeyside Age: Strength: 53.7% Summary: This special limited edition bottling is a valedictory farewell to the Vatted Malt, one delivered with honour and pride. This whisky is made from a marriage of fine, old single malt whiskies from Islay and Speyside distilleries. It combines intense aromas and flavours of dried fruits and maltiness underscored by a subtle, sweet smokiness, all robed in the revealing signs of whiskies of antiquity. Only 1,323 bottles have been released for sale. Nose: the work of both oak and the peat kiln appear to be well matched here. Though perhaps it is the orange blossom and pear fruitiness that really makes the heart skip a beat; Taste: a sublime delivery. The Compass Boz marque of oakiness is stamped prominently, but couched this time by a stunning mix of creamcocoa, lightly sweetened by Demerara. Improbably, half way in there is a steady stream of juicy barley…about the same time you notice how well balanced the smoke is: like a great football referee, you dont actually notice him being there, but makes all else run beautifully; Finish: doesnt try to develop. Just allows the elements that make up this complex whisky the space to run their own course…; Balance: being an American, Compass Box founder and blender, John Glaser, knows a thing or two about pouring two fingers of whisky. So I join John in raising two fingers to the SWA and toast them in the spirit they deserve to thank them for their single-minded and successful quest to outlaw this ancient whisky term. Each bottle personally signed by John Glaser. |

Compass Box – Oak Cross Vatted Malt Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 43% Summary: They call this malt whisky Oak Cross because it offers the best characteristics of both American and French oak aging. A rich, medium-bodied malt whisky, Oak Cross combines vanilla characters from American oak and spicy, clove-like characters from French oak. Flavour Descriptors: on the palate, notes of clove and vanilla accent a sweet maltiness and subtle fruit character. Recommendations: Suitable as an aperitif served with a chilled water in the winter months. Full enough to serve as a summertime digestif. Excellent match for many cheeses. Distillery Sourcing: made entirely of Highland single malt whiskies led by Teaninich and balanced with malts from the villages of Brora (for fruitiness) and Carron (for weight). All 10 to 12 years-old. Wood: all the whiskies are aged for their primary maturation in a mix of American oak cask types. The marrying casks are a mix of first-fill Bourbon barrels and our proprietary “Oak Cross” casks made of American and new French oaks. Bottling Details: bottled at 43%. Not chill filtered. Natural colour. |

Compass Box – Spice Tree Vatted Malt Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 46% Summary: As in the past, The Spice Tree is 100% malt whisky sourced from northern Highland distilleries, (notably and primarily malt whisky distilled at the Clynelish distillery). The primary maturation is in a mix of first-fill and refill American oak. Nose: quite paradoxical,. First sniff and you think: "whoa! Thats a big-un." Then you nose again, slowly and carefully you realise that whilst the nose does seem superficially big, it is actually made up of dozens of tiny aromas ganging together. The main theme is delicate tangerine and vanilla – almost like tangerine yogurt – but there are weightier spices to note, all of them fragments, especially the watery allspice and ginger…sublime. Taste: and now the palate continues with exactly the same theme: a million little flavour explosions, all timed to go off one after the other, but all on a sweet muscovado sugar bed created by the superb base malt of Clynelish. Finish: thins rapidly into a more basic vanilla, though there is still a spice pulse and glow; just a little bitter at the death. Balance: having initially been chopped down by the SWA, who were indignant that extra staves had been inserted into the casks, The Spice Tree is not only back but in full bloom. Indeed, the blossom on this, created by the use of fresh oak barrel heads, is more intoxicating than its predecessor – mainly because there is a more even and less dramatic personality to this. Not just a great malt, but a serious contender for Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2011 World Whisky of the Year. |

Compass Box – The Peat Monster Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: 46% Strength: Compass Box Summary: Rich and loaded with flavour: a bacon-fat smokiness, full-blown peat, a maltiness, hints of fruit and spice. The finish is very long, echoing peat and smoke for several minutes. Flavour Descriptors: rich and loaded with flavour: a bacon-fat smokiness, full-blown peat, a maltiness, hints of fruit and spice. The finish is very long, echoing peat and smoke for several minutes. Recommendations: a fantastic late-night digestif malt whisky. Also suitable for taking the chill off a cold day. Excellent with blue vein cheeses. Distillery Sourcing: Islay single malts from the village of Port Askaig as well as some south shore whisky (as of late 2007); and Ardmore. All aged from 10-16 years. Douglas Laing – The Christmas 2011 Big Peat Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 57.8% Summary: HISTORICALLY WE CALL THIS – WHISPER IT – A VATTED MALT, BLONDE IN THE BOTTLE – BUT WITH A BIG PEAT KICK A SMALL BATCH BOTTLING TRADITIONALLY UNCHILL FILTERED CONTAINING ONLY ISLAY MALT WHISKIES! |

Dalmore – 1995 Castle Leod/bordeaux Finish Country: Scotland Region: Highlands Age: 16 Year Old. Strength: 46% Summary: A HEROIC PAST. In 1263, an ancestor of Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III from being gored by a stag whilst out hunting. The grateful King granted him the right to bear a stag’s head in his coat of arms. The Dalmore Distillery was long owned by The Mackenzie family and every bottle of single malt whisky from our Highland distillery was, and is, adorned with this proud emblem, symbolising the supremacy of The Dalmore. SUPPORTING CASTLE LEOD TODAY. This limited edition bottling celebrates the ancient and historic seat of Clan Mackenzie and is the second in a series crafted by Master Distiller Richard Paterson in homage to Clan Mackenzie. After all, it was the vision of the Mackenzie brothers in 1839 that laid the foundation for the distillerys monumental success. Located just 14 miles from The Dalmore Distillery. Castle Leod has been home to the Cabarfeidh, Chief of the Clan Mackenzie, since 1606 and is one of the few castles in Scotland still lived in and owned by direct descendents. It is in honour of one of Scotlandss great landmarks that The Dalmore commissioned the painting that graces this exceptional single malt. Fittingly, a proportion of the proceeds from its sale will go towards the upkeep of Castle Leod. A MESSAGE FROM CABARFEIDH. “I’m honoured that Richard Paterson has created this extraordinary single malt in tribute to Castle Leod, the Mackenzie Clan’s spiritual home. Our Castle has stood the test of time, and I have no doubt that, in years to come, The Dalmore Castle Leod will equally be recognised as a tomeless classic.” Cabarfeidh, The Earl of Cromartie, Chief of the Clan Mackenzie. A TASTE TO REMEMBER. “The joyful effervescence of fleshy plums, raisins and citrus fruits are followed by the silky tones of kiwi fruit, honey, caramelised almonds, spicy ginger, chewy toffee and soft liquorice brings this cornucopia of delights to a perfect conclusion. Matured initially in American white oak and Spanish sherry wood, and then transferred for a final 18 months to barriques from a legendary 1st cru Classé Bordeaux chateau. An Exceptional single malt of inimitable finesse.” Richard Paterson, Master Distiller. |

Old Pulteney – The Navigator Country: Scotland Region: Highlands Age: Strength: 46% Summary: Old Pulteney launches Navigator as a limited edition exclusive. This is the launch bottle from Old Pulteney, the Maritime Malt, in conjunction with the sponsorship of the Clipper Round the World yacht race. The competing Old Pulteney yacht has been designed specifically to replicate the Navigator packaging. Matured in ex American bourbon and ex Spanish Sherry casks. Colour: Honeycomb. Nose: Sweet and crisp. Layers of tangy apples and dried fruit harmonise with hints of chocolate and fresh vanilla. Taste: Full-bodied and rich in flavour. A burst of honey, cocoa and oranges eases into a long-lasting, spicy finish with a maritime surprise at the end. OLD PULTENEY DISTILLERY Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wicks celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly on the British mainland. At a time when road links to the town were yet to be established, the distillery was dependent on the sea for its supply of barley and for the shipping out of its malt whisky. Wick became known for the barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) which left the port in vast numbers. The distillery itself has an absorbing history, with its unique stills defying convention to this day. The wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a swan neck. Legend has it that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply decided to cut the top off! The Old Pulteney bottle now incorporates a bulbous neck to reflect the shape of the stills. Over time, the distillery has passed through the hands of various owners, and even closed during times of trouble for the industry in 1930. Luckily, the repeal of an often forgotten period of prohibition in 1947 saw the welcome resumption of whisky production, with the distillery changing ownership a number of times, before its purchase by Inver House Distillers in 1995. Throughout this history what has endured is the quality of the whisky. Traditional craftsmanship and the distillerys windswept location continue to contribute to the award-winning whisky that is Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky. |
