Glendullan / 14 Year Old / Old Malt Cask Edition Special Offer: Save £15.25 Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 14 Years Old Strength: 50% Summary: Old Malt Cask is unashamedly for connoisseurs of the finest expressions of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. As one of the most established brands in the single cask market, Old Malt Cask is trusted by thousands of Malt Whisky consumers all around the world as the selection which bottles some of the most noteworthy Scotches in the market. Each month, the Hunter Laing tasting panel reviews the company stocks and, after careful consideration, selects only the casks which are of the highest quality. Whether the whisky was distilled in Speyside or Islay, the Lowlands or the Islands, they all have one thing in common – they have been bottled at exactly the right time to capture the unique characteristics of the cask. Invariably bottled at 50% strength to maintain drinkability, each new expression is non-chillfiltered to ensure that the personality of each cask remains. Our expert blender also writes notes to guide the consumer through the tasting experience. We don't have to do much with the whisky – we let it speak for itself. Old Malt Cask has spent fifteen years as one of the market leaders in the single cask category. As the reputation of Hunter Laing rests on the quality of each release, they aim to ensure that each new bottling delights the consumer as much as the last one. Nose: what a beautiful mix between clean, alluring barley and citrus, mainly clementine’s; a little lavender freshens it up even further; Taste: just about a perfect impact on delivery; the malts are salivating, the sugars are crisp and clean, the vanilla un-embittered…wow!!! Finish: here’s the dull bit Glendullan…the oak injects a little natural caramel but a few spices compensate; Balance: at last! A Glendullan how I normally see it in the blending lab, rather than when tasting bottling’s for the bible. Of late they have been pretty ordinary and hardly representative. This one is much truer to its known quality among pros, mainly due to this crisp malt being presented in decent oak for a change. 93 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. Nose: clean with a proud butterscotch tart theme. The barley is still fresh and at times concentrated; Taste: I defy you to count how many different style of natural toffee you can find on this…; a thin layering of ulmo honey sits well with the maple syrup and persistent malt; Finish: a little spiced cocoa on the fading barley sugar; Balance: given the right cask, shows what a lovely malt this distillery is capable of producing. Engaging and irresistible. 92.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. Tasting Notes / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible ©. |

Which means that the ever-growing oak is comfortably contained and the complexity increases….; the barley is juicy despite the years and the spices early on; Finish: some very clever oils ensure a dessert feel to the finale which includes some sugary diced coconut; Balance: creamy, complex and luxurious. Edencrofts – Special Offer & Cheshire Whisky Event Update
Two pieces of news from Edencrofts this week…
Number 1 is a great offer on the Royal Lochnagar – The Distillers Edition
Though the origins of the Lochnagar distillery go back to 1826, it was some 22 years later that its received its royal approval. In 1848, Queen Victoria selected Balmoral Castle as her holiday residence.
Only three days after she had arrived, the distillery manager John Begg made an invitation to Prince Albert to visit his distillery, knowing he was interested in all things mechanical.
To his surprise, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their three eldest children visited the next day. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. So impressed were they with the whisky, John Begg immediately received a Royal Warrant of Appointment as supplier to the Queen.
Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine. Carefully matched for a second maturation in Muscat casks, this is a beautifully soft and rounded whisky that’s a pleasure to drink.
STRENGTH: 40% ABV
APPEARANCE: Rich amber, with polished copper tones.
NOSE: Immediate strawberry jam, bags of jelly babies, then a richly malty heart with malt loaf and Dundee cake. With water, sweeter (rich fresh fruit aromas, as in a village fruit shop) and a hint of almond oil.
BODY: Medium.
PALATE: Oily. Fruity, with a silky cereal smoothness.
FINISH: Soft and biscuity, as with old fashioned fig rolls. Lovely late warmth.
PRICE: £32.50 per bottle – saving 32% on the standard retail price of £47.50.
(Promotion available whilst stocks last.)

The Old Malt Casks
A favourite amongst whisky drinkers since it’s humble beginnings back in 1998 (when 50 single cask bottles were produced by Douglas Laing to commemorate their 50th anniversary).
Today, The Old Malt Cask regularly offers over a hundred superb Malts to the connoisseur or anyone else who likes a good malt!
The new additions to Edencroft’s range are below and they all scored brilliantly in Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible – an average of nearly 94!
The Old Malt Cask, 20 Year Old AULTMORE – scored 93 Points – Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible.
The Old Malt Cask, 18 Year Old ABERFELDY – scored 94 Points – Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible. The Old Malt Cask, 15 Year Old BENRIACH – scored 93 Points – Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible. The Old Malt Cask, 28 Year Old LINKWOOD – scored 95 Points – Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible. |

Edencroft Malt Whisky – Limited New Arrivals
Edencroft Fine Wine & Spirit Specialists have some very nice Limited New Releases this week with a couple of offerings from ‘THE OLD MALT CASK’.
They are the 27 YEAR OLD GLEN MHOR – DISTILLED AUGUST 1982 and the 27 YEAR OLD DAILUAINE – DISTILLED FEBRUARY 1983.
Fair warning though, there are only six bottles (of the Glen Mohr) and five bottles (of the Dailuaine) available for each malt whisky so I wouldn’t dither if you don’t want to risk being disappointed.
So, let’s check out the goodies …
27 YEAR OLD GLEN MHOR – DISTILLED AUGUST 1982
This is one of the ‘lost’ malts being that The Glen Mhor distillery closed it’s operations in 1983. The distillery has now been demolished (and a shopping centre was been built upon the site. Oh! The shame of it!)
It received 95 Points from the Whisky Bible with these tasting notes:-
Nose: peat-smoked oak; vanilla cream Swiss roll…simply gor-geous.
Taste: smoked-spiced delivery with several layers of lime and caramelised ginger; juicy and improbably sensuous with the peat returning to fill the middle rather nimbly.
Finish: tires but there is enough Demerara to see off the worst of the oak; the smoke-laden spice is a constant – rather delicious – noise to the very end and helped by a very light oil.
Balance: more time on its dial than Big Ben. But plenty of the smoky spice of life… this is astonishingly good.

It is priced at £105.00 per bottle – only six bottles available.
And the second malt …
27 YEAR OLD DAILUAINE – DISTILLED FEBRUARY 1983
Dailuaine (pronounced “Dal-oo-ayn”) means ‘green vale’ and it’s name perfectly describes the distilleries location and rich surroundings. The Dailuaine distillery is located between the mountain Ben Rinnes (The Ben) and the river Spey at the village of Carron. It was founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie.
The whiskies produced at Dailuaine are the major components of the Johnnie Walker blends. Only 2% of the product is marketed as single malt so this release of the 27 year old single malt makes it a very rare beast indeed.
It received 93.5 Points from the Whisky Bible with these tasting notes:-
Nose: bloody hell… smoke!!! And we’re not talking a couple of ppms, either. Sweet, almost a touch of cloves, to dance with the phenols.
Taste: probably the best delivery from this distillery I’ve come across in 20 years. Not only is the peat chewy, but there are sumptuous waves of Demerara blending in perfectly; the mid-dle is entirely consumed with vanilla and barley, with the smoke drifting around the back of the palate: what a treat…
Finish: the usual distillery leaden-footed lushness works to good effect here as the smoked honey goes full length…
Balance: don’t get me wrong. I am not just making this up be-cause it is a peaty malt. There are any number in this book which have underwhelmed me, as you can see. No, this is all about the sublime marriage between the smoke and varying sugary notes. A real journey of a dram… what a discovery!! .
