Chivas Regal Unveils ‘Made for Gentlemen’ series

September 15, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Chivas Globe-Trotter Made for Gentlemen

Chivas Globe-Trotter Made for Gentlemen

Chivas Regal is celebrating craftsmanship, generosity and a passion for travel with the launch of the latest instalment in the ‘Made for Gentlemen’ series. Chivas has partnered with renowned British brand Globe-Trotter in the fourth year of the series to design exclusive collectibles for connoisseurs of luxury whisky and adventure.

Chivas Bottle Tin

Chivas Bottle Tin

Containing the newly re-designed Chivas 12 bottle, the Chivas 12 ‘Made for Gentlemen’ by Globe-Trotter limited edition gift tin is inspired by the long tradition of proud travellers applying decorative stickers onto their luggage. Featuring some of the most iconic cities around the world, the bespoke stickers adorning the tin have been hand-drawn by illustrator Andrew Davidson and represent the truly global footprint of Chivas.

To commemorate the partnership, Globe-Trotter has for the first time created a 20” trolley case for the modern gentleman. The Chivas 12 ‘Made for Gentlemen’ by Globe-Trotter Carry-On Case features a colour matched burgundy vulcanised fireboard and customised lining detailing the Chivas signifier.

As the ultimate luggage piece, Chivas and Globe-Trotter have also created the Chivas 12 ‘Made for Gentlemen’ by Globe-Trotter Steamer Trunk. The made-to-order creation is the ultimate luggage piece complete with a mini bar for the perfect service of the modern gentleman’s bottle of Chivas Regal.

A bespoke backdrop expressing the modern heritage of both brands lines the trunk interior with additional compartments for suits, watches and other travel essentials. Underlining its authenticity, the design of the trunk nods to the art of whisky making with handles crafted from American white oak in honour of the casks that influence the complexities of Chivas 12 Year Old, and a hand engraved copper plaque made from a retired Scotch whisky still.

All proceeds from the sale of the first Chivas 12 ‘Made for Gentlemen’ by Globe-Trotter Steamer Trunk will be donated to The Prince’s Trust charity.

Celebrating iconic global cities and to honour this exclusive partnership, Chivas Regal Global Brand Ambassador, Max Warner, has created the ‘Chivas Maximilian’, a fresh and modern twist on a classic cocktail, the Whisky Mac, and takes inspiration from all four corners of the world.

Chivas and Globe-Trotter form a natural partnership as two luxury British brands. We are very proud to introduce the fourth Made for Gentlemen partnership and we believe the synergies in our values and expert craftsmanship has resulted in this fine collection of limited editions that we hope will inspire adventurous travellers and spirits connoisseurs around the world.
– Richard Black: Chivas Regal Global Brand Director

The Chivas 12 ‘Made for Gentlemen’ by Globe-Trotter limited edition gift tin is available globally in travel retail. The Chivas ‘Made for Gentlemen’ Carry-On Case is available through Globe-Trotter retail outlets with RRP £950. The Chivas 12 ‘Made for Gentlemen’ by Globe-Trotter Steamer Trunk will be for sale in the Globe-Trotter flagship store in London from October at RRP £12,000 (with all proceeds donated to The Prince’s Trust charity).

Dalmore Distillery Announces Two Limited Edition Bottlings!

September 11, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Dalmore 21 and The Dalmore 30 will be on sale globally

The Dalmore 21 and The Dalmore 30 will be on sale globally

The Dalmore Highland Single Malt is to release two limited edition expressions. “The Dalmore 21” and “The Dalmore 30” are exemplary showpieces of The Dalmore house style created by Master Distiller Richard Paterson.

The Dalmore 30

The Dalmore 30

The Dalmore 21 is initially matured in American white oak and finessed in hand-selected first-fill Matusalem oloroso sherry butts from the Gonzalez Byass bodega in Jerez de la Frontera. With indulgent flavours of orange fondant, brand snaps, fresh coffee, chocolate ganache and marmalade this 21 year old single malt is an outstanding example of The Dalmore house style. Only 8,000 bottles of this limited edition whisky will be available.

The Dalmore 30 is an assemblage of precious liquids that have been nurtured in hand-selected Matusalem oloroso and Amoroso oloroso sherry butts from the world renowned Gonzalez Byass bodega in Spain for 30 years. The result is a decadent nose of cherries, raisins and apples, a palate of sweet mangoes, panna cotta, Columbian coffee and honeyed mulled wine and a robust finish of coconut blancmange, cracked black pepper and rich dates. This stunning whisky is limited to only 888 bottles each of which have been individually numbered.

From watching over the new make spirit as it slumbered in its casks, to selecting the perfect assemblage of fine aged stocks and indulgent woods to finesse our whisky in, both The Dalmore 21 and The Dalmore 30 are whiskies that I have spent many years perfecting.

The results are exceptional; the liquids are rich, complex, and synonymous with The Dalmore – they are truly magnificent.
– Richard Paterson: Master Distiller

Richard’s experience and innate understanding of whisky has taught him respect for the passage of time, his meticulous attention to detail is coupled with a rare ability to select the finest finishes and fills that means each whisky The Dalmore creates is a work of art.

The Dalmore 21 and The Dalmore 30 will be on sale globally, with The Dalmore 21 available from 18th September, and The Dalmore 30 will follow in October.

Ballantine’s Unveils New Bottle For Its 12 Year Old Expression!

Ballantine’s has unveiled an elegant new bottle for its 12 Year Old expression. Rolling out globally from this month, the design evolution demonstrates the quality and super premium cues of Ballantine’s 12 Year Old to appeal to modern whisky enthusiasts.

Ballantine’s 12 Year Old New Packaging

Ballantine’s 12 Year Old
New Packaging

Following the re-packaging of Ballantine’s Finest in 2013, the brand took inspiration from this to develop a confident new look for its 12 Year Old expression. The designs reinforce the close link between the two expressions while highlighting the natural step between them, as discerning drinkers seek to enter and explore the super premium whisky category with Ballantine’s 12 Year Old.

The new packaging adopts the chevron-shaped label of Ballantine’s Finest, creating a more refined, masculine and eye-catching look on-shelf. The navy colour scheme and the greater prominence of the numeral 12 both emphasize the super premium quality of the 12 Year Old, while the re-positioning of the brand’s crest – the Ballantine’s Grant of Arms – and the Ballantine’s ‘B’ help to create a more modern aesthetic.

Thanks to its perfectly balanced taste profile, Ballantine’s 12 Year Old has become an award-winning blend with outstanding quality credentials. We are delighted to present a new elegant, super premium pack for the bottle that stays true to the pioneering values of our founder George Ballantine in his relentless pursuit of quality.

We’re confident that the new design, which is now in line with Ballantine’s Finest, will encourage consumers to trade up to Ballantine’s 12 Year Old for special occasions as they start their journey through the super premium whisky category.
– Peter Moore: Ballantine’s Global Brand director

The new Ballantine’s 12 Year Old bottle has been successfully received through consumer research and will be available globally.

ROYAL SALUTE LAUNCHES THE ETERNAL RESERVE

ROYAL SALUTE LAUNCHES THE ETERNAL RESERVE

ROYAL SALUTE LAUNCHES THE ETERNAL RESERVE

Royal Salute is delighted to announce The Eternal Reserve, which uses an innovative blending technique to create an exceptional whisky that will literally live forever.

Royal Salute has selected rare and precious whiskies with an exceptionally long finish to blend and marry together in 88 casks to form the inaugural batch. Using a unique process called Circular Blending, Royal Salute has committed to including this original blend in each subsequent The Eternal Reserve release for decades to come.

Each time a new batch is unveiled, half of the blend will be re-casked in the Royal Salute Vault to conserve the precious liquid created in 2015. Thus, the original blend is forever preserved by this perpetual re-circulation – creating a smooth, voluptuous whisky that justifies its original name: uisge beatha (the water of life).

From the carefully crafted whisky, to the new porcelain flagon design, Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve is a dedication to the art of true craftsmanship. With distinctive features, the porcelain flagons have all been created with meaning to combine age-old techniques with a contemporary signature icon, which reflects the Circular Blending process.

Time is at the heart of Royal Salute – our youngest blend is 21 years old but the brand was born alongside a thoroughly modern monarch so we constantly blend tradition with the contemporary.

The Eternal Reserve is inspired by artists, writers, and philosophers – all dedicated to understanding the possibility of continuity in the modern world. This superb whisky is our suggestion that eternity doesn’t mean living forever. It means timelessness – and it belongs to those who live in the present.
– Vadim Grigorian: Royal Salute Global Brand Director

The first batch of 88 casks will be released in 2015 and sold exclusively in Global Travel Retail, supported by a digital and experiential promotional and merchandising campaign bringing the Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve story to life.

Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve will be available from September.

Circular Blending Process

Circular Blending Process

Circular Blending Process

The very first creation of Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve began with the preparation of 88 casks of incredibly rare and precious whiskies, all aged in their casks for over 21 years. These whiskies were carefully selected using two criteria: firstly, that each whisky possessed an exceptionally long finish that could be further extended through blending and marrying process and secondly, that the whiskies chosen could be beautifully harmonised in each new batch, while keeping the original signature style forever.

Once selected, the precious whiskies were blended together and then further married in 88 casks in the Royal Salute Vault for a period of six months. This original blend is then blended with other 88 casks worth of precious whisky of exceptionally aged whiskies to complete the first batch.

Before bottling this first batch, our expert blending team holds some of the blend back, returning it to the original 88 casks, so they can form the basis of the next batch. These 88 casks are always safeguarded in the Royal Salute Vault in Strathisla distillery. Each time a new batch is blended, the same process – circulation of 88 casks – is repeated; the whiskies of the 88 casks from the previous batch are added to the new blend of the next batch.

Tasting Notes

A dreamy sensation of ripeness is the first to arrive. Pears in syrup, honeycomb and creamy vanilla. An unmistakable promise of intense sweetness to come.

Like the changing of green to gold and the falling of the leaves, the burst of the rich sensuality of liquid honey, juice-laden oranges and tangy liquorice. Mellow, graceful and serene.
Time passes to reveal a beautiful and incredibly long lingering culmination.
Like the eternal cycle of nature. A finish that lasts and lasts; never-ending.

The new bottle and outer pack will start appearing on shelves from September 2015.

The new Chivas Regal 12 Year Old bottle retains its round generous shape for which it is renowned, while its shoulders have been raised higher to reflect the brand’s pride as one of the world’s leading Scotch whiskies.

The brand signifier, is now included as a more prominent, organic feature of the bottle, and the signatures of founders James and John Chivas have been added to the glass to display the value of brotherhood at the heart of the brand. GLENFIDDICH ANNOUNCES MALT MASTERMIND FINALISTS FOR 2015!

September 4, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ali Reynolds, 2014 Glenfiddich Malt Mastermind Winner

Ali Reynolds, 2014 Glenfiddich Malt Mastermind Winner

The 10 bartenders who will compete in this year’s prestigious Glenfiddich Malt Mastermind have been announced. The competition, which is now in its sixth year, will see some of the countries up and coming bartenders compete at the Glenfiddich Vaults at Voltaire bar in Central London on 14th September 2015.

The finalists will be asked to create their own signature serve using Glenfiddich 12 Year Old, Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera Vat or Glenfiddich 18 Year Old. They will also have to take part in a quick fire buzzer round which will test their knowledge on the complex world of whisky.

Judging the contest is UK brand ambassador, Mark Thomson, Kirsten Grant Meikle, a William Grant family member who is also Director of Prestige, William Grant & Sons UK, and Gary Sharpen, Editor of The Cocktail Lovers. Each contestant will be tested on their creativity, innovation, technique and presentation. Judges will also be looking for a cocktail that demonstrates an excellent balance of flavour.

Selecting our finalists has been extremely difficult. The standard has been higher than ever, which is a credit to the on-trade industry in the UK.

We are looking for a whisky maverick this year – someone who displays passion, knowledge and a modern style with a nod to tradition. It’s going to be a difficult one to judge but we have an esteemed panel on board who are well qualified to select a worthy winner.
– Mark Thomson: UK Brand Ambassador

The finalists are confirmed as:

· Kieron Hall, Bonbar, Newcastle upon Tyne,
· Aiden Page, Carmelite Hotel, Aberdeen
· Alix Nardella, Mission E2, London
· Manachain Monaghan, Monk Cocktail Bar, Buxton
· Dan Berger, Ace Hotel, London
· Bartosz Kowalski, Union Street Café, London
· Michael Cameron, Guy’s Restaurant & Bar, Glasgow
· Mark Barrett, Cringltie House, Edinburgh
· Nicholas Gilmour, The Tippling House, Aberdeen
· Stephen Rutherford, Orchid, Aberdeen

The bartender who is crowned this year’s Glenfiddich Malt Mastermind will win a VIP trip to the Glenfiddich distillery, the prestigious trophy and £1,000.

The Malt Mastermind 2015 winner will be announced on the 15th September.

BALLANTINE’S LAUNCHES GLASS FOR WHISKY DRINKING IN OUTER SPACE!

September 4, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

"To boldly go where no whisky has gone before ..."

“To boldly go where no whisky has gone before …”

Ballantine’s has created the Ballantine’s Space Glass and a Special Batch of Ballantine’s Space Whisky designed for a zero gravity environment as the brand continues to innovate, making a genuine contribution to the space programme.

As part of a bold campaign to appeal to the next generation of whisky drinkers, Ballantine’s has commissioned the Open Space Agency, a collective of astropreneurs, to design the Space Glass and overcome the challenge of drinking whisky in a zero gravity environment. The Space Glass was rigorously tested at the ZARM Zero-G Drop Tower in Bremen, Germany, to prove its functionality in conditions similar to that of space.

Space Glass - Exploded

Space Glass – Exploded

To complete the launch, Master Blender Sandy Hyslop has created a special batch of Ballantine’s Space Whisky, a blend that seeks to ‘Stay True’ to the Ballantine’s whisky style while enhancing the signature flavour profile. Ballantine’s Space Whisky has been crafted by introducing first fill sherry matured malt to a bespoke Ballantine’s blend with the intention of addressing the impact that microgravity has on taste-buds, resulting in a more concentrated whisky with enhanced spice and honey notes.

The Ballantine’s Space Glass is built around the whisky drinking experience. The warming element from hand to glass is important to me because the whisky warms up while you are drinking it, unlocking aromas that ensure a multi-sensory experience. It’s fantastic that this has been achieved, so Ballantine’s inaugural space blend has a fitting vessel specifically built for zero gravity.

In space you are unable to pick up on the same smell and taste intensity as on earth. That was my key consideration when designing Ballantine’s Space Whisky. I had to make the blend more robust, heightened in flavour, and more concentrated so one could emulate the experience of drinking Ballantine’s on earth. Astronauts miss the taste of home and by crafting a fruitier, stronger, more floral blend I think Ballantine’s has designed a home comfort for space.
– Sandy Hyslop: Master Blender

Our brief was to develop a whisky glass that worked under the conditions of microgravity, the scientific term for zero gravity. It was important that we focused on creating a ritual around how you drink from the Ballantine’s Space Glass to give a familiarity of what we are used to here on earth – the end result is one that incorporates several elements of that ritual, from the liquid entering the glass through to sipping from it.
– James Parr: founder of the Open Space Agency

We believe that when individuals stay true to themselves they leave their mark on this planet. As Ballantine’s drinkers have re-invented the world all around us, we’ve been right there with them. We are delighted to be the first whisky brand to support astropreneurship with the development of the Ballantine’s Space Glass and the Special Batch of Ballantine’s Space Whisky. Not only is the glass innovative – solving fundamental scientific questions of how liquid moves in zero gravity – but it is also beautifully designed, with the ritual of the whisky drinking experience at its heart.
– Peter Moore: Ballantine’s Global Brand Director

Ballantine’s will be publishing articles, photography, imagery, audio, illustrations and GIFs throughout the project. Consumers are invited to follow the journey at ballantinesspaceglass.com

Ballantine’s Space Glass Product Information: How it works

In order to get the whisky from bottle to glass there is a loading mechanism which inserts a nozzle into the base of the glass. Held together by a strong magnetic connection the base of the glass releases a quick draw down allowing the slow release of the whisky into the base of the glass through a one-way valve.

There is a cold touch mouth clip, ergonomically shaped to give the user a quality drinking experience on the top of the glass. To capture the ritual of drinking whisky you rest your lips here, while hidden ‘scent slots’ let you smell the blend. The capillary design needs a spiral CNC machined rose gold plated dome base to provide the surface tension angle to feed the whisky into the capillaries. The base encourages the user to hold the glass and contains a magnet for practical Zero-G applications while in space, e.g. sticking the glass to the side of a space ship. The 2mm capillary dimension in the glass supplies a good amount of whisky while retaining good surface tension for ease of suction.

Tasting notes for the Special Batch Ballantine’s Space Whisky

Work begins on expansion of The Glenlivet distillery

Chivas Brothers has forged ahead with its investment into enhancing the production facilities of The Glenlivet distillery to ensure that current and future demand for ‘the single malt that started it all’ continues to be met. Today, work officially began on the site, which will significantly increase capacity.

The news follows a strong set of financial results for the year ending in June 2015 for Chivas Brothers, announced last week, with the Scotch whisky and premium gin business of Pernod Ricard recording overall growth in net sales of +3%.

The Glenlivet recorded the standout achievement for Chivas Brothers with +11% net sales growth, a result of the brand’s commitment to innovation and craftsmanship through launches such as Founder’s Reserve, the extension of the Master Distiller’s Reserve range and The Winchester Collection. The Glenlivet has successfully driven consumer recruitment and attracted Scotch connoisseurs to the brand, which has made it the largest contributor to the growth of the single malt category in the past five years (IWSR 2014).

Today’s announcement reinforces the brand’s recent unrivalled global success selling over 1 million cases to become the world’s No.1 single malt Scotch whisky brand. The Glenlivet is also spearheading growth for the entire Pernod Ricard Single Malt Scotch whisky portfolio, with the group’s range becoming the Global No. 1.

Across other brands in the Chivas Brothers portfolio there were additional strong performances such as Ballantine’s Finest growing in an otherwise declining category.

The brand, No. 2 Scotch whisky worldwide, sold over six million cases in the year ending in June 2015 following an increase of +2% in net sales driven by Ballantine’s Finest. Ballantine’s prestige portfolio has retained its loyal consumer base through the launch of Ballantine’s Golf Club while millennial whisky drinkers have been recruited to Ballantine’s Finest through successful marketing campaigns including the brand’s partnership with Boiler Room.

Chivas Regal, the world’s first luxury whisky, maintained its position despite a slight decline in global sales of Scotch whisky in 2014, demonstrating the continued appeal of this iconic brand. The past twelve months saw the launch of The Venture and the introduction of two new luxury whiskies, Chivas Extra and Chivas Regal The Icon, into the award-winning portfolio.

Chivas Brothers continues to lead in the standard segment with Passport Scotch, which grew +20% in net sales to reach a record 1.7m cases in the year ending in June 2015. Passport has strong appeal among millennial consumers in emerging markets including Brazil, Angola and Mexico, which has helped to earn its position as the fastest growing of all spirits brands that sell more than 200,000 cases per year.
