The Dalmore has released a limited edition bottling “The Dalmore Distillery Exclusive 2015” which will be sold exclusively at the brands iconic home in the Scottish Highlands.

The latest bottling embodies the art of The Dalmore for which the brand’s esteemed Master Distiller, Richard Paterson, has hand selected a collection of port, Moscatel and Madeira casks to mature this exquisite whisky in, before finally being finessed in first fill bourbon barrels.

The Dalmore Distillery Exclusive 2015 is a stunning whisky.

Our artisanal approach to whisky making bestows this bottling with a bold, rich, sweet amber gold colour with aromas of caramelised orange, forest fruits and marzipan, and on the palate macerated plums, almonds and pecans.

Each expression of The Dalmore is meticulously crafted by Richard with the help of a small and highly skilled team of distillery craftsmen who manage the production process by hand. This approach is essential to The Dalmore as its collection of eight stills of varying shapes and sizes require great attention in order to create the unique, complex character that is distinctive of The Dalmore.

Located on the shores of the Cromarty Firth, the picturesque home of The Dalmore houses a visitor centre where guests are invited to experience the brand and become immersed in the history, bravery and workmanship that go into producing The Dalmore’s award winning whisky.

Tasting Notes – The Dalmore Distillery Exclusive 2015 (48%)

Matured in hand selected port, Moscatel and Madeira casks before being finessed in first fill bourbon barrels.

Nose: A rich sherry colour that clings to the glass. Sweet, fruity port, ripe red apples, orange and marzipan.

Palate: Luscious mouthfeel. Sweet cake mixture, fruits soaked in port.

Finish: A long, spicy finish with bags of sugary, fruit sweetness. Gets drier at the end.

Overall: A rich, powerful dram that seems to punch way above the weight of it’s 48% ABV. Decidely morish and very palatable.

I know they’ll sell out of this very quickly regardless but I hope that some of the buyers will actually taste this great whisky rather than just keeping it for investment purposes.
That would be a shame – and a waste!

The Dalmore Affinity Bottle

Home to some of Scotland’s most precious and rare whisky stocks, The Dalmore distillery has created a one of a kind exclusive bottle in celebration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, which will be showcased at RWS Hotel Michael, Singapore.

The whisky, named The Dalmore Affinity, has been meticulously crafted and nurtured by Master Distiller Richard Paterson and the small but highly skilled team at The Dalmore distillery in Scotland for the last 50 years.

Always striving for perfection, Paterson works with some of the world’s finest wineries and bodegas to hand-select each cask which matures The Dalmore. The Dalmore Affinity has been matured in American white oak bourbon casks for 48 years before being finessed in exclusive Apostoles 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry butts from the Gonzalez Byass bodega in Spain for a further 2 years and 6 months.

Respecting this passage of time takes patience and artistry but the wait yields exceptional results. It is only after 50 long years of maturation has Richard finally declared that the casks have gifted the spirit with the perfect depth of flavours which include caramel, cherries and chocolate ganache.

Priced at S$105,645 (Approx. £49,611), this exceptional release will be showcased at Hotel Michael in Singapore from the 26th July 2015.

When creating The Dalmore Affinity, we wanted to celebrate the pioneering spirit and bravery of the Singaporean people who came together to develop an independent nation based on five noble values of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

We wanted to mark this Golden Jubilee with a whisky that is truly befitting of this occasion, which is why we have released this very rare, one of a kind whisky, sourced from the deepest darkest corners of our warehouses in Scotland. As beautiful as it is rare, this expression is an exceptional whisky that we believe richly honours this extremely prestigious occasion.

The Dalmore Affinity is bottled in an elegant hand-crafted crystal decanter, complete with a solid silver stag created by leading Scottish silversmiths Hamilton & Inches, holders of the Royal Warrant.

This ‘12-point Royal Stag’ emblem dates back to 1263 when the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie bravely saved King Alexander III of Scotland from the fury of a charging stag. In recognition of this noble act the grateful King granted the Clan Mackenzie the right to use the emblem in their coat of arms.

When ancestors of the Clan took control of the distillery, they brought with them their cherished emblem and the iconic stag has proudly adorned every bottle since 1867.

The beautiful crystal decanter is enclosed in a wooden presentation case which has been hand-crafted by the expert craftsmen at LINLEY, who meticulously designed and constructed it with the fastidious care and attention only someone of their calibre can provide.

The Dalmore Affinity will be showcased at RWS Hotel Michael, Singapore for three weeks starting from Sunday 26th July 2015.

The Dalmore Affinity has been matured in American white oak bourbon casks for 48 years and was finished in an Apostoles 30 year old Matusalem oloroso sherry butt for two years and six months.

Aroma: Black Forest fruits, caramel orange segments, dark chocolate and liquorice.

Palate: Black Maraschino cherries, treacle toffee and tangy Columbian coffee.

Finish: Chocolate ganache, Muscovado and crushed almonds.

Scapa Skiren Launched – A New Single Malt Whisky Forged By The Elements Of Orkney!

September 2015 marks the launch of Scapa Skiren, an artisanal single malt forged by the elements of Orkney; a remote island of natural contrasts.

Crafted by five dedicated artisans at the manually operated Scapa distillery, Scapa Skiren’s smooth taste embodies the unexpected contrasts of the Orkney Islands, setting it apart from traditional Island Malts.

A unique barrel-shaped Lomond wash still – the only remaining working Lomond in the Scotch whisky industry – is used for distillation, resulting in a richer and fruiter honeyed spirit. Exclusive maturation in First Fill American Oak casks gives Scapa Skiren a smooth creamy sweetness with a hint of tropical, citrus fruit and coastal heather, uncommon for an Island Single Malt but distinctly Scapa at its core.

Scapa Skiren gets its name from the Old Norse for glittering bright skies and lights up the senses with its delicate scented floral flavours as well as fresh pear, sweet and fruity pineapple notes on the nose.
The smooth and sweet taste of ripe honeydew melon slices as well as bursts of fruity pear contrast with the tantalising taste of sweet sherbet on the palate. The end result is a long refreshing sweetness, reminiscent of the summer Orcadian skies after which it is named.

Scapa recently opened its distillery to the public, for the first time since its launch in 1885, on the beautiful, wild and untameable Orkney mainland. It is situated on the shore of the Scapa Flow, a natural harbour and one of Britain’s most historic stretches of water.

It has been a real pleasure to bring the dynamic and unexpected contrasts of Orkney to life in Scapa Skiren.

Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
This extraordinarily stylish and complex expression of Caol Ila has been double-matured in carefully selected Moscatel casks. The wood is not over-evident and instead balances perfectly with this richly flavoured single malt.
Appearance: Clear gold.
Nose: Wonderfully concentrated pure, clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. With water, the fragrant smokiness comes singing through.
Body: Medium.
Palate: Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. Caol Ila’s signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size. Overall, drying, in a beautifully balanced, complex, elegant development, complemented with cinnamon spice.
Finish: Long, rounded, robust and multi-layered.

Tomatin are excited to announce an addition to their range – a 36 year old small batch release – which is available to all markets now.
Batch 1 of this new 36 Year Old expression has been vatted from a combination of ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks, producing just 800 bottles. Smooth and creamy, it has been bottled at natural cask strength (46%abv), non chill filtered and natural colour. Packaged in an attractive wooden box, each bottle is individually numbered and comes with its own certificate.
Tomatin are in a unique position to be able to offer a product of this age on an ongoing basis. Following the withdrawal of their famed 30 year old expression, we expect this new 36 year old to be a welcome addition for drinkers, of Tomatin single malt.
AROMA: Pear drops, ginger snaps, butterscotch, vanilla ice cream, sherry notes, milk chocolate.
PALATE: Woody and malty, less sweet than the nose, cloves and cardamom.

This Lowland Distillery took its name from St Magdalene's Cross, once a site of a medieval fair and leper colony. The Union Canal ran behind the distillery and not only supplied the cooling water, but in the distillery's heyday it was also the main method of supply, with barley and other materials brought in by barge to its jetty. The distillery was closed down in 1983, and sold for property development. Now a very rare single malt.
AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Sherry notes with strong fruit aromas – melons, red apples. Dry hessian note with a herbal aroma.
TASTE WITHOUT WATER: Sweet, with wine, oak and hop flavours. Some heather blossom (honey) elements are also present.
AROMA WITH WATER: Floral with polished oak influences initially. Subtle malt, dark chocolate and nuts aromas follow.
TASTE WITH WATER: A little smokiness initially followed by sweet, Sherry elements with floral flavours also present.

Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines.

Founded in 1898 by David McAndies, The Glenlochy Distillery commenced production in 1901, and it had been part of Diageo from 1953 until its transfer to Scotish Malt Distilleries Co.
Production ceased in 1983, when the distillery was definitely mothballed, just like so many others in that decade. The premises have been acquired by a local hotel group, West Coast Inns Ltd, that developed the site commercially, only retaining the kiln and the pagoda roof, which are declared historic buildings.
The house style is fruity, verging towards sweet, exotic fruitiness and coconut, vanilla and honey characters. The peat is delicate, and soft.
Barring a few independent bottlings (such as Gordon & MacPhail's) and an edition in Diageo's Rare Malts series, distillery bottlings are extremely rare and hard to find.
Nose: Coffee; leafy.
Palate: Green, floral, fresh. Another good cask with plenty of the grassy freshness the distillery was famed for.

A Dram For A Difficult Job: There was a time when the Men of Tain would queue up for a daily dram of whisky with their lunch. Huddled together they would pass around a metal cup – blackened through constant use – and share a joke at the expense of one of the lads. This tradition, as well as the practice of handing out an extra dram for unpopular jobs like cleaning out the washback, is still fondly remembered by some of our more long serving men. Perhaps a little too fondly you might say.

A much sought-after single malt with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay – but also offering a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting dram.
Lagavulin is an intensely flavoured, smoky-sweet single malt with seaweed flavours and a huge finish, aged in oak casks for at least sixteen years.
Appearance: Deep amber gold.
Nose: Intensely flavoured, peat smoke with iodine and seaweed and a rich, deep sweetness.
Body: Full
Palate: A rich, dried fruit sweetness with clouds of smoke and strong, barley-malt flavours, warming with an intense flavour. At the back of the mouth is an explosion of peppery smoke.
Finish: Huge, long, warming and peppery with a distinct appetising sweetness.

Following on from our landmark Organic 2003 vintage, this release is a multi-vintage vatting in which Jim McEwan has brought together the finest organic barley from our farmers and partners, Sir William Roberts of Mains of Tullibardine, William Rose at Mid Coul and Neil Scobie at Coulmore.

This whisky was in 2011 awarded “Exceptional” status and three stars by the tasters of the prestigious Gault Millau and Michelin Superior Taste Awards – the only spirit to be so recognised. And these guys know their stuff!
Character: An elegant, composed and stylishly vibrant spirit that showcases the absolute finesse, purity, definition and elegance of organically grown barley.
Colour: Late summer barley.
Nose: Opens on a light almond note with a twist of candied lemon. Followed by the magical aromatics of toasted barley, floral and fruit notes with a hint of lemon honey intermingling beautifully. Toffee sweetness comes from American oak cask and as the spirit opens little drifts of succulent papaya, melon and kiwi can be found.
Palate: The texture is sensational, the spirit gliding over the palate like warm syrup. The taste buds love the purity and the sensational clarity of flavours being presented. A real sweetness on the front palate, barley sugar, honey almonds, green jelly beans, pear drops all splashed with fresh lemons and balanced by the crispness of malted barley.
Finish: An intensity and definition of flavour that is unparalleled. Incredibly fresh giving an unforgettable palate experience that leaves the taste buds tingling and overwhelmed.
Mood: Mischievous. Coy, flirtatious, Lolita. A breast-surging, bodice ripper: breathlessly virtuous.

This is the second release in the Uber-Provenance Islay Barley Series – whisky that is very dear to our hearts.
This spirit has been distilled from barley grown by our partner farmers (and good friends) here on Islay specifically for Bruichladdich – a link with the land and terroir of this great island that had been lost, broken for many years. Now once again the salt sea spray lashed fields of Islay are producing the raw material for our distinctive island single malt – this release made from barley grown on the eastern side of the island on jubilee field at the place known as the “headland of the gallows”, on Dunlossit farm.
Character: The texture of the spirit is remarkably smooth for such a youngster. The mouth feel is quite irresistible; it’s fresh and zesty with the quality of the Islay-grown barley unrestrained by the presence of a long relationship with the oak. Now we can experience just how beautiful a spirit can be when distilled ultra-slowly by people who understand that their skills and patience are critical to the final outcome. This is “Walking on Sunshine”, summer in a glass. It has Islay charm with the most seductive texture I have ever experienced. Is this down to the Islay barley? I truly believe it is.
Colour: Brilliant, luminous lemon with a harvest gold hue.
Nose: When you first inhale the bouquet it’s like the “The Hills are Alive”, with aromas of yellow flowers in bloom on forest river-banks and heather-covered moorlands, barley fields shimmering yellow and gold, orchards filled with ripe fruits, all embraced by the warm, westerly ocean breeze. This is the beauty of young Bruichladdich spirit; you can reach into its soul and transport yourself to this amazing Island simply by closing your eyes and inhaling. It’s a remarkable harmonious bouquet.
Palate: The olfactory concentration continues onto the palate. On tasting, you will discover that squeeze of lemon, honey, pear and green apple, little hints of tangerine, chocolate, light notes of marzipan, cinnamon and sweet, oaky, vanilla. The harmonious freshness of barley and wild flowers rising on that irresistible marine presence unique to the Islands of Scotland. The taste buds rejoice in the warmth of the spirit and sweetness of the malt; it’s a taste they seldom experience in such generous measures. A miracle on the palate for sure. Islay malt whisky made from Islay grown barley is something that very few people have ever experienced. Now you can understand what’s been missing in your life and never have to wonder again, for you have touched the void!
Finish: The finish is outstanding. How can you say goodbye to a kid that’s stolen your heart with his beauty and honesty. It’s difficult, but it’s not goodbye, because as you enjoy the final drops, John Logan, the farmer at Dunlossit, is about to start ploughing for this year’s harvest – Dream Fulfilled!

Together with my sons Scott and Andrew, as well as our Master Blender Tom Aitken, I have selected casks from our maturing stocks which each do justice to the label's fifteen year milestone. These cask-strength Anniversary bottlings are presented in green glass with wooden gift boxes, and are finished in the original-style labels to pay homage to the earliest Old Malt Cask releases. Choosing these casks allowed me to reflect with pride on my last fifteen years as a single cask bottler and, in reviewing our stocks, to look forward with relish to the next fifteen years of the Old Malt Cask.

An elegant, dark gold whisky with a powerfully robust nose.
Initially sweet, with vanilla. Soft fruits and a peat smoke aroma coming through late.
Smooth and mellow on the palate with sweet, fruity notes at the beginning, but a nutty fruity character eventually takes over.
The finish is long, lingering and slightly dry with peat smoke and oak.

Bruichladdich / Cuvee 640: Eroica

This American-oak-aged Bruichladdich has been further matured in Limousin oak casks from Acquitaine that for many years contained one of the great Eaux de Vie. These casks' tannins have added new layers of rich complexity to our own elegant, floral Bruichladdich whisky. This is a spirit to give pause, to reflect on. A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate.
Character: Curvaceous, buxom, captivating yet elegant with a silky texture that is divine.
Colour: Mahogany/ bronze.
Nose: The opening notes are of marinated pears, apricot, mango, spicy apple; then drifts of dark chocolate orange and espresso coffee can be detected together with vanilla-rich toffee. The seductive notes of old style malt whisky rise serenely; warm, reassuring and deceptively potent. The aromatics flirt shamelessly with the senses and then you realise that this is no ordinary spirit – it’s just so wonderfully fragrant. Gentle spices, citrus, dried fruit & herbs pop up like champagne bubbles keeping the mood one of celebration and joy.
Palate: Fantastique! The taste is rich and mellow. Many flavours continue to evolve – rich ripe apple, Turkish delight, soft strawberries, candied almonds and above all others that beguiling maltiness that is the mark of all Bruichladdich spirits. This, plus the coastal marine freshness adds life and vitality arousing the senses to an even higher level. You just know that this is authentic Islay heaven, simultaneously delicate and potent. The amorous embrace of France has not turned the islander's head. He remains mature and mellow while thoroughly enjoying the smouldering warmth of the femme fatale.
Finish: Ultra sexy, a rare and wonderful experience – if this was a movie it would have to be “Casablanca”. One to be enjoyed at the close of the day with others who share the same passion for the rare things in life.
Mood: A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate.

Bruichladdich / Octomore Scottish Barley 061/ 167ppm

Titanic amounts of peat but with a light, delicate complexity and a beguiling finesse. Young, yet eminently mature, it defies us. It remains an enigma. We embrace that.
Here, we pay tribute to its pedigree, to the land from which it came and the raw materials that gave it life: Octomore Scottish Barley.
We believe in challenging convention.
Character: Magnificently muscular. Most heavily peated malts are so dry and phenolic there is little else to spark the senses, not so this young warrior who arouses pride and passion, transporting you to that most famous rock in the Atlantic ocean – Islay – the beating heart of the Hebrides.
Colour: Autumn sunshine/ citrine.
Nose: The first waves bring a combination of sea spray, spindrift, wet sea weed and hints of oily iodine. Then peat smoke with cracked black peppercorn and as the spirit reveals itself, stunning notes of heather flowers, lemon balm and water mint. Its like watching a spiritual weaver create a tapestry from the Hebrides itself.
Palate: As the spirit breathes in the glass a subtle change takes place. Rising steadily comes the crisp, malted barley then the sweet oak, giving notes of vanilla, toasted rye bread and walnuts. Add a burst of fresh lime, poached apple and pear from distillation whilst always in the background the steady rhythm of the sea painting pictures in your mind of a people and place who know that single malt is the stuff of life, sustaining them for generations.
Finish: The senses will celebrate this genial, warm, thrilling experience long after the glass is empty. You will know that you have been on a journey by the warmth in your heart and the spirit in your soul.

Nose: what a beautiful mix between clean, alluring barley and citrus, mainly clementine’s; a little lavender freshens it up even further;
Taste: just about a perfect impact on delivery; the malts are salivating, the sugars are crisp and clean, the vanilla un-embittered…wow!!!
Finish: here’s the dull bit Glendullan…the oak injects a little natural caramel but a few spices compensate;
Balance: at last! A Glendullan how I normally see it in the blending lab, rather than when tasting bottling’s for the bible. Of late they have been pretty ordinary and hardly representative. This one is much truer to its known quality among pros, mainly due to this crisp malt being presented in decent oak for a change.

Nose: a delicate trace of lime to the barley: what an understated, fragile, uber sexy nose…;
Taste: unusual in that the first wave on delivery appears to be a thin, oily note. This is promptly followed by the young barley water, threatening a sharpness but dampened by the lightest scattering of icing sugar; mouth watering, and youthful;
Finish: even with the custard powder arrival, never a hint of anything that is remotely non kindergarten;
Balance: one of the most impressive examples of Speyside malt, apparently not even out of nappies but treating you to a spectacular display of barley in all its beauty. Confirmation, barley needed, that with Clynelish, this has to be Diageo’s most under-rated distillery.

Finish: a little spiced cocoa on the fading barley sugar;
Balance: given the right cask, shows what a lovely malt this distillery is capable of producing. Engaging and irresistible.

Knockando / 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Manager's Choice

Nose: I think my staff have poured me the wrong stuff: they’ve opened up some pot still Demerara, right…? Wrong. No definitely from the Knockando sample. Well, well, well…let’s just say it’s a fruity, sugary, rich start on the nose…;
Taste: Actually, I don’t care if this is rum or whisky. When you get flavours this beautifully defined, a body this sublimely structure…it really doesn’t much matter. Oozes fruity, beautifully natural sweetened quality and complexity;
Finish: A slight bitterness on the finish where, for the first time, there is a minor blemish, but the array of sugars still make for something memorable…and absolutely 100% nothing like I have tasted from any previous Knockando…;
Balance: I have been in the Demerara region Guyana, crawled around a rum warehouse at a rum distillery and opened a cask of rum which has less rum characteristics than this rumbustuous chappie. Quite a rum do.

Flavour: Delicately light, with a mouth-watering combination of maltiness, smokiness and sherry sweetness. Hints of dried fruit, vanilla, cinnamon and cloves tempt the taste buds further.
Finish: Long, smooth and spicy, with a delicious, yet delicate, lingering smokiness.

Finish: Long lasting and smooth, with a hint of spice and sherry sweetness.
Comment: Hints of oak, complexity but finely balanced. Combines the smoothness of our younger whiskies with the greater depth of our older expressions.
Bottled in limited quantities primarily for the North American, Japanese and Travel Retail markets.

Flavour: Full bodied rich and rounded develops slowly into fruity, smoky and spicy flavours.
Finish: Long-lasting, smooth and smoky with a chocolate feel at the back of your throat.
Comment: An incredibly rounded whisky that leaves you refreshed and contented. A whisky that always deserves a second glass. My personal favourite.

Nose: apples and pearsfreshly diced, topped with a aqueeze of lemon. The tannins look seemingly bemused and powerless…;
Taste: though they don't hang around on delivery. Red liqourice to the fore, though soon swamped by salivating barley and muscovado suagr. A little orange hangs about;
Finish: long, softy oiled and not a degree of light molassess and toffee as the tannins begin to make their mark;
Balance ironically, a Macallan not from a wine cask, yet turns out to be as fruity as you'll find. A real treat.

The finish is long, sweet and slightly dry with a very pleasant aftertaste.

Nose: plenty of Kentucky at work here with the liquorice and hickory giving depth to the vanilla. The barley is not outdone, though…;
Taste: the oak yoke is discarded on delivery and the barley is at full blast;
Finish: just adore those gristy sugars which have somehow survived all these years; some lemon to the late vanilla;
Balance: simple, but so elegant with it!

The Glen Scotia Twitter Tasting – Four Drams That Re-Invent A Great Brand!

The Glen Scotia Range

The Glen Scotia Tweet Tasting held last Monday was a great chance to sample some drams that has not got the credit in recent years that it deserves.

Founded in 1832, Glen Scotia is one of only three distilleries producing in the Campbeltown whisky region. Currently undergoing a re-brand, it was a great opportunity to sample some drams in their new packaging that will be hitting the shops very soon.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Glen Scotia Double Cask (46%)

A NAS, NCF dram – Coming Soon to Specialist Retailers – RRP £37.00

Finished in first fill American Bourbon barrels & Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks.

Nose: Vanilla, caramel & fudge straight off! There’s also apples teamed up with a pleasant oakyness and a hint of smoke.

Palate: Sweet, rich mouth feel. Lovely rum and chocolate flavours, baked fruits and treacle pud.

Finish: Very warming and spicy. A long finish beating a fiery path down to the tummy!

Overall: Quite a heavy dram, meaty & full of spicy attitude!

Tasting Notes – Glen Scotia 15 Year Old (46%)

NCF – Coming Soon to Specialist Retailers – RRP £55.00

Nose: Fresher, less heavy than the Double Cask. Polish & a hint of peat are there and I’m getting all sorts of charred wood & smoke! A little vanilla n’ caramel is also present but not much …

Palate: Thinner mouth feel, sweet and very citrusy. Lemons, fruit cake with a little caramel. Pretty salty too!

Finish: Spicy, peppery, long, warming finish again – a little tobacco in there as well.

Overall: Pretty kick-ass actually! Quite, quite different to the Double Cask.

Tasting Notes – Glen Scotia Victoriana (51.5%)

NAS, NCF dram – Coming Soon to Specialist Retailers – RRP £75.00
Matured in Bourbon barrels then finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks & deep charred oak casks. All chosen casks are hand selected from Glen Scotia’s reserve Cellar. Each bottle carries the signature of Master Blender John Peterson as a personal guarantee of quality.

Nose: Strawbs and cream hit the nose! Vanilla ice cream and pears coming up a close second.

Palate: Rich fruit cake, coffee & a luscious mouth feel! Generous treacle with a little salt.

Finish: Glorious finish – refined, spicy. Nice!

Overall: Shouts quality from every taste bud!

Tasting Notes – Glen Scotia Single Cask Distillery Edition (56.1%)

NAS, NCF dram – Available Exclusively from the Distillery for £90.00
Matured in an American Bourbon refill cask. Approx distillation date Dec 2002.

Nose: Smoky, peaty, charred woody abounds! The syrupy vanilla sweetness is still there though.

Palate: Rich mouth feel. A very sweet, peaty smokey hit. Thick caramel, chocolate & grapefruit.

Finish: Long finish with well tempered spice and dryness.

Overall: A powerhouse dram – a visit to the distillery shop maybe?

My Favourite On The Night

I think it’s got to be the Double Cask followed by Victoriana. The Double Cask has it all and for a very reasonable price.

These whiskies all seem to have very distinctive characteristics – meaty, savoury, salty producing some very satisfying drams indeed. I would certainly class these expressions as warming, beside the fire on a cold night kind of drams.

Kilchoman Distillery Company Limited has agreed to buy Rockside Farm on the Isle of Islay

Kilchoman Distillery Company Limited has agreed to buy Rockside Farm on the Isle of Islay from the current owners.

After more than 30 years on Islay, the current owners Mark and Rohaise French have decided to sell Rockside Farm in order to pursue new opportunities off the island, including spending more time with their four grown up children, who now all have families of their own.

It has been a wonderful privilege to live at Rockside, for the children to have grown up in this idyllic part of the world, and to have seen the distillery become the success it is today.

Following the success of the award-winning Chivas 12 Year Old Magnum by Christian Lacroix last year, the two international luxury brands – flamboyant fashion designer Christian Lacroix and ultra premium Scotch whisky Chivas Regal – have extended their exclusive partnership, unveiling Chivas 18 Year Old by Christian Lacroix.
Lacroix has delivered a lavish and sophisticated design for the bottle that is perfectly coupled by the bespoke mirrored presentation box, resembling an ancient relic of regal nature. It is a true gem for collectors.
The whisky bottle, label, capsule and presentation box are embellished in a rich tapestry, embroidered and bejeweled, yet still instantly recognizable as the Chivas Regal brand.
The intricate and finely detailed jacquard fabric, interwoven with metallic threads and diamante stones, created by one of the designer’s regular suppliers, is hand applied to the capsule, bottle and box.
Again the bottle features the metallic decoration that was developed for the Chivas 12 Year Old Magnum, but this time the technology as been challenged even further in order to extend it over the curved shoulders of the bottle. These decorative effects, applied in the colour of the whisky onto a premium silver surface, use precision laser technology to deposit thin metal-film features onto the glass substrate.

Summary: The distillery began life as a flax mill and became a Malt Distillery in 1898. It was re-equipped to produce grain whisky around the Second World War. It was then converted back to malt in the 1960's and extended in the 1970's. The majority of the distillery?s output was used for the Vat 69 blend. The porous oak wood, air-dried for over 2 years, but in this instance never seasoned with any other whisky, allows our precious spirit to extract maximum flavours as nature intended – producing a whisky of incredible taste and smoothness, with layers of vanilla and candied orange peel, interwoven with sugar coated almonds. Aroma: Toffee, butterscotch, vanilla, and a curious hint of stewed fruits. Classic Glenmorangie mentholic top-note, interwoven with an unusual nuttiness, reminiscent of Brazil nuts in toffee.

Nose: beautiful structure and weight; a little toasty, but welcomes the nutty spread. Excellent salt to suger ratio;
Taste: sublime delivery with near perfect weight and poise and some ramped up barley. The oils are delicate, the sugars playful and the quasi-bourbon style liquorice adding just the right degree of tostesterone;
Finish: a late settling of some sugary scores as the light muscovado overpowers the fudgy oak;
Balance: an early morning reminder why I can really love this job.

Summary: Whilst we are proud to place the Laing family name on all the casks we bottle, there are some whiskies which are so remarkable that they deserve a little extra recognition. Hunter Laing's Old & Rare name signifies a rare single cask malt that has been bottled at the peak of its flavour. Whether it was the water, the wood, or even the location in the warehouse, circumstances have conspired to create a sublime drinking experience which once consumed, can never be repeated. Each bottling of Old & Rare has been matured to perfection, so due to the angels' share there are comparatively few examples to emerge from each cask. Presented in a highly distinctive squat bottle, each expression comes beautifully packaged in a specially crafted wooden box. The personal tasting notes of our expert "nose" are included to complement the views of each individual taster. It goes without saying that each cask remains unadulterated by excessive filtration or added caramel. Summary: Colour: Deep amber. Aroma: Mellow, rich and enticing, with the unmistakable Ardbeggian combination of tar, soot and pine resin. This leads into dark chocolate, treacle toffee, coffee grinds and a distant, nutty/oaky note. A splash of water initiates a burst of fresh, briny sea-spray with a hint of salt, some linseed oil, and then some more of the classic Ardbeg pine resin/lime top note. A Glendullan how I normally see it in the blending lab, rather than when tasting bottling’s for the bible. Of late they have been pretty ordinary and hardly representative. Nose: This is clearly a wonderful nose: a lot of oak influence, but what a fragrant sexy kind of oak it is: Old, Hints of smoke and cigar humidor. Lots of sherry cask influence too. Fortified wine. Balsamic. Plum jam. Thick with a few mint leaves to create one heck of a complex nose. Heavenly.
Palate: Great mouthfeel. Very approachable. Dried fruit and smoky tobacco leaves. Orange bits , plums, peaches. Chocolate and bitter oak. A peppery tang too. Sweet and savoury. With a nice amount of oak.
Finish: Sweet orange marmalade with traces of smoke tobacco. Dry. Oak.
This is a superb dram, one of the better Karuizawas i had in the same league give or take as the other 1984 cask 3692 , (if we take out the 1964 one I’ve had, which is in its own league).

Summary: The distillery was built in 1821 by Peter Brown, the factor of the Seafield Estates of Moray and Banffshire, and is named after Linkwood House, the family home. Brown?s son, William, carried on the business and rebuilt the distillery in the 1870s. Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. This Sherrywood finish edition was awarded Silver in the Worldwide Whisky No Age Statement Category at the International Wines & Spirit Competition 2014. Released to coincide with a busy programme of events around the world, this officially licenced edition celebrates Dylan's life and works, and features original photography, illustrations and quotations that capture Dylan at his most creative. Included within this pack is a small notebook, in which we have printed some specially chosen extracts from Dylan's canon. The whisky is matured in a combination of ex-dry Oloroso Sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks. Dr Jim Swan's Tasting Notes: This Penderyn Sherrywood begins with the aroma of sugar bonbons, rich with the smell of creamy toffee and vanilla. Soon Penderyn's own fresh green apples and boiled berry fruits join in. In the mouth, cream sherry flavours, obvious but not overt, mingle with delicate fruits reminiscent of white currants and honeydew melon.
