About The SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other.

As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: “to provide our members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world’s widest collection of single cask whiskies.”

Conceptualised in the late 70’s and established in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, now 35 years old, has branches and partners bars in 19 countries globally. The Society has a selection of over 500 casks every year, each cask yielding a few hundred or less whisky bottles which are unique to that cask.

Rather than name their Whiskies after the distillery, the Society has a coding system. The Society also creates fantastic tasting notes summaries for their Whiskies and other bottles. The whiskies are straight from the cask single malt, undiluted, without chill-filtration or colouring at cask strength.

More recently the Society has been named Independent Bottler of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Independent Bottlers’ Challenge (IBC) competition.

GlenAllachie Launches ‘White Heather’ – Their First Premium Aged Small Batch Blended Whisky!

March 24, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

White Heather 21-year-old!

With more than 50 prestigious awards in three years, and a Master Distiller with almost 50 years’ experience at the helm, The GlenAllachie Distillers Company is renowned for its exceptional single and blended malt whiskies, and now launches its first-ever Blended Scotch Whisky: the limited release White Heather 21-year-old!

With only 2,000 bottles available worldwide, and a particularly high single malt content, White Heather 21-year-old is a premium small batch blend, expertly crafted by industry icon, Billy Walker.

Only 2,000 bottles are available worldwide!

White Heather sees Walker call upon his first forays into the industry as a blender whilst taking inspiration from a whisky brand which was discontinued in the 1980s as the industry consolidated.

White Heather was acquired by The GlenAllachie Distillers Company, led by Walker, in 2017, along with The GlenAllachie Distillery and MacNair’s Lum Reek Blended Malt brand.

Walker has put his own unique spin on White Heather, elevating the favour profile with skilful wood management and a watchful eye on the maturation process.

To create this rare and luxurious small batch blend, Walker first sourced some of the finest single malt and grain whiskies from the Highlands, Islay and Speyside. The whiskies spent 18 years maturing in a combination of first fill American barrels, sherry butts and second-fill barrels and hogsheads.

In the GlenAllachie Distillery lab, Walker expertly crafted a unique recipe with an unusually high single malt content, including vintage GlenAllachie.

The blend was then laid down for an additional maturation period, highlighting Walker’s acclaimed wood management skills; spending three years in a carefully selected mix of Pedro Ximénez puncheons, Oloroso puncheons and Appalachian Virgin Oak casks to let the flavours marry together and take on additional layers of depth and complexity from the wood.

The resulting whisky, which is presented at 48% ABV with no added colouring or chill-filtration, perfectly balances gentle peat from the Islay contribution, archetypal Speyside fruity notes, the heather honeyed sweetness of the Highlands, and a rich and rounded foundation from the grain components.

The whiskies spent 18 years maturing in a combination of first fill American barrels, sherry butts and second-fill barrels and hogsheads.

This whisky is particularly close to my heart. Creating this blend took me back almost 50 years to when I started my career at Hiram Walker. It was there I started to learn the art of blending and the specialist skills required to select whiskies that when interfaced with each other ultimately amplified the overall flavour experience.

With White Heather, I poured everything I’ve learned on my whisky journey into crafting a truly memorable small batch aged blend that sits proudly alongside even the very best single malts. I wanted to honour the original blend whilst recreating it in a much more premium form with exceptional wood. It’s a fine balance bringing together the character of such different whiskies and cask types, but I’m incredibly proud to now unveil the end result.
– Billy Walker: Master Distiller

White Heather is being unveiled in the same week that The GlenAllachie’s Master Distiller Billy Walker is inducted into Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Hall of Fame. In 2022, Walker will celebrate a remarkable 50 years in the whisky industry.

White Heather 21-year-old – (2,000 bottles, 48% ABV) is available from specialist retailers globally, with a UK RRSP of £120

TASTING NOTES

Colour: Natural Gold-Bronze.
Nose: Beautifully soft background with heather honey, butterscotch, peat reek and hints of tannins.
Taste: Rich notes of heather honey, butterscotch, orange peel, and soft tannins, with a wonderful presence of peat and smoke.

Sampling Lambay Whiskey – Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day The ‘Island’ Way!

March 19, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Lambay Malt Irish Whiskies!

To celebrate St. Patricks’s Day Lambay Whiskey was the subject of last Monday nights @TweetTastings.

Steve from The Whisky Wire guided us through two Irish Whiskies:-

  • Lambay Malt Irish Whiskey
  • Lambay Single Cask Strength Irish Whiskey

The Lambay Whiskey Brand was inspired by Cyril Camus, President of Maison Camus; an independent Cognac house since 1863, which remains one of the last family owned cognac houses.

Camus previously created the world’s first maritime matured cognac, Ille De Ré. Having explored the impact of maritime conditions on these casks and seeing how the Irish whiskey category was growing he wanted to create a truly unique Irish whiskey with a cognac cask finish, using the influence of the sea in maturation.

Partnering with his friend Alexander Baring, the owner of privately owned Lambay island, located in the Irish Sea off the coast of north County Dublin, they converted the old lifeguard boathouses into what are now bonded warehouses for their casks.

Lambay island is private nature reserve and was chosen because it is always a few degrees warmer than the mainland and right on the gulf stream. It has the highest portion of sea spray aerosols in Europe making it perfect for cask maturation in their bonded warehouse.
(Apologies to Steve for pinching his notes!)

There is also an opportunity to WIN a Lambay Small Batch Gift Set for you and a friend!

For more details go to thewhiskywire.com and get entering!

If you want to catch up on what all the tweet tasters had to say you can view their comments by searching for the hash tag #LambayWhiskey on Twitter.

AND we managed to trend 9th. on Twitter in Ireland – a great finish for our St. Patrick’s Day Tasting!

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Lambay Malt Irish Blended Whiskey (43%)

Available from Lambays’s online store for €50.00

A blend of single malts that are both double and triple distilled. Matured in bourbon barrels for at least three years, before being finished in cognac casks from the renowned Maison Camus.

Lambay Malt Irish Whiskey, was the result of a complex process of consistent testing back and forth to ensure the light and delicate notes of the bourbon cask matured single malts weren’t overtaken or dominated by the cognac cask finish.

Lambay Island’s own volcanic Trinity Well water was added at the final stage of finishing before bottling.

Nose: A little tropical with a big slice o’ banoffee pie! Popcorn, creamy vanilla, apples and cereal notes. Lemon, citrus and oak also make an appearance. After a time some nice porty aromas appear – which was nice!

Palate: Creamy, vanilla custard, with hints of tropical fruit. Some growing popcorn and refreshing rose water.

Finish: Punchy pepper with a little chocolate I think. The sweet tropical flavours are still there though.

Overall: All-in-all a very sippable dram – plenty going on!

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt

Tasting Notes – Lambay Single Cask Strength – Cask 4613 – Irish Single Malt Whiskey (56.5%)

Limited to 400 bottles and launching April 1st. via their online store, for a RRP of €120.00

Initially matured in bourbon barrels for four years, before being finished in cognac casks from Maison Camus for three years.

The Lambay Single Cask Strength bottlings, are from the earliest casks laid down on Lambay back in 2018. Twenty casks were set aside for their Barrel Program and Cask 4613 is the fourth cask release and the only one so far released to the public.

Camus are known for their rich aromatic cognacs, but the casks Lambay use are not always old, as the younger casks are higher in sweet compounds, rather than the deeper rancios notes that you get from the older casks.

Nose: Slow burner me thinks … patience required … So, vanilla toffee, floral loveliness, honey and stewed fruits – a great nose!

Palate: Rich, intense, cane sweetness with tropical flavours and banana. There’s glorious licorice & fennel – very unusual – and it had all the tweeters harking back to the childhood sweets they used to love!

Finish: Very sweet finish with fiery pepper fighting it all the way!

Overall: A very interesting and tasty dram – I’d be curious to know if further releases from their earlier casks produce these types of flavours!

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt

Redbreast 10-Year-Old Launched To Celebrate 30 Years Of The Resurrected Brand!

March 11, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Redbreast 10-Year-Old!

The release celebrates 30 years since Irish Distillers resurrected the Redbreast Irish Whiskey brand in 1991!

Redbreast Irish Whiskey, which is produced by Irish Distillers at Midleton Distillery, has unveiled Redbreast 10-Year-Old, a reimagining of Gilbey’s historic expression, last produced half a century ago.

The limited-edition release celebrates 30 years since the resurrection of Redbreast Irish Whiskey and salutes the continuous revival of single pot still Irish whiskey on the world stage.

The packaging of Redbreast 10-Year-Old has been designed to enhance the traditional credentials of the Redbreast brand
Photo: Eoin Holland – www.eoinholland.com

Redbreast 10-Year-Old pays tribute to the historic expression originally produced by W.A Gilbey, a wine and spirits merchant operating in Dublin at the turn of the 20th century. As importers, Gilbey’s had an ample supply of sherry casks in their vaults and would source distillate exclusively from the nearby Jameson Distillery to mature in their casks. This special bottling of Redbreast 10-Year-Old has been reimagined for a contemporary audience, signifying the ongoing renaissance of single pot still Irish whiskey.

The liquid is composed of three exceptional distillates, spanning 10 to 15 years in age, matured in both American oak ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry seasoned butts from Spain. A truly special offering, the inclusion of a rare, more traditional style of single pot still distillate which is usually reserved for older age-statement whiskeys in the Redbreast range pays tribute to the historic expression last produced in the 1970s.

A significant contribution from the sherry butts references the prominent use of fortified wine casks in whiskey bonding throughout Ireland in the 1960s. Evoking the quality and craftmanship of Redbreast Irish Whiskey, this expression brings together rich and fruity flavours from across the world while paying homage to bonding, a tradition embedded in Ireland’s whiskey history.

The distinctive packaging of Redbreast 10-Year-Old has been designed to enhance the traditional credentials of the Redbreast brand, which was first brought to life in 1912, and features a timeline of significant dates in the brand’s history. The label, an outlier within the current Redbreast Irish Whiskey family and reminiscent of the original white label and red seal from the historic Gilbey’s 10-Year-Old, is set to appeal to the nostalgia of dedicated Redbreast fans around the world.

Bottled at cask strength, at an ABV of 59.1%, Redbreast 10-Year-Old will retail at €100. The expression will be available exclusively via The Birdhouse, Redbreast’s online membership platform, as a reward for loyal Redbreast fans whose dedication is driving the brand’s success as the most decorated single pot still Irish whiskey in the world.

Redbreast 10-Year-Old will retail at €100

This release rejoices the longstanding history of Redbreast Irish Whiskey and celebrates the distinctive qualities which Redbreast is known for globally. Redbreast 10-Year-Old offers a unique, rich flavour profile with notes of tropical and dried fruit, which gives way to a balance of richness from the inclusion of sherry casks.

I am delighted to share this release with whiskey advocates and Redbreast fans across the globe.
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender

Redbreast has gone from strength to strength to become the largest selling single pot still Irish whiskey in the world, with a fascinating and rich history of which we are incredibly proud. For this limited-edition bottling, we seized the opportunity to praise the iconic sherry influence on the range and pay tribute to the rich history between Spanish and Irish craft.

This is a representation of the coming together of tradition, and true craftsmanship, which has been handed down for generations.
– Dave McCabe: Blender

Tasting notes:

Aroma: Intense aromatics of honeycomb and cedarwood with earthy notes, dried tobacco leaf and worn leather. Dark fruits linger in the background and slowly develop overtime along with toasted almonds and demerara sugar, while a pot still spice intensity continues to build, adding to the complexity of flavours layered over a strong foundation of oak.

Taste: Rich in tannins that work in tandem with the inclusion of traditional pot still distillate creating balance between oak and spirit. The oloroso wine casks emerge to contribute marzipan and fig along with subtle hints of mixed berry compote, while delicate touches of vanilla and treacle are found lingering in the background.

Finish: The pot still spices rise to a crescendo and then finally give way to the toasted oak and delicate sweetness that lingers until the very end.

Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle. The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp.

NOSE: takes me back to my early teens, spending schooldays working on a farm: pure farmyard with an earthy yet fruity punch. The sort of complex nose that almost makes you forget to drink the stuff…almost…;

TASTE: a gentle coating of vaguely sweet peat that multiplies in intensity; salivating yet chewy. Some liquorice and hickory notes make their drying mark;

FINISH: distinctly gristy and unusually dry for a smoky malt. Long, luscious and not a little oaky late on;

BALANCE: a bit more than a tang, believe me! Faultlessly clean distillate that revels in its unaccustomed peaty role. The age is confusing and appears mixed, with both young and older traits being evident.

2020 marks Robert’s 30 years at the distillery. To honour this achievement, Tomintoul Distillery is releasing two very special bottlings of 30 years old Tomintoul Single Malt, personally selected by Robert himself.

The First Edition of the limited release “Robert Fleming 30th Anniversary” is an incredibly complex yet beautifully balanced single malt. The whisky has spent its first 20 years in a bourbon cask before spending its last 10 years in an Oloroso sherry butt.

“It gives me great pride to put my name to this exceptional single malt, which was matured in a cask that I personally selected in Jerez, Spain. Rare and complex, this is a stunning example of the unique style of whisky that we make at Tomintoul Distillery”, Robert Fleming, Master Distiller.”

Sampling Penderyn Whisky For The St. David’s Day Tweet Tastings – What Could Be Better?

March 3, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Penderyn ‘Gold’ Collection!

To celebrate St. David’s Day, the Welsh Distillery of Penderyn Whisky was the subject of Monday nights @TweetTastings!

On the night, Steve from The Whisky Wire, guided us through Penderyn’s “Gold” Collection which consisted of:-

  • Penderyn Madeira Finish
  • Penderyn Rich Oak
  • Penderyn Sherrywood
  • Penderyn Portwood
  • Penderyn Peated

The Penderyn Distillery, which launched in 2000, is located in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales.

Penderyn uses single copper-pot stills for its distillation, which creates a spirit at an industry high of 92%. These stills were created by Dr. David Faraday, descendent of the ground-breaking Victorian scientist, Michael Faraday.

In 2014, Penderyn also commissioned a pair of Scottish-style ‘lantern’ stills (producing spirit at around 67%) to allow them to experiment with new whiskies.

Penderyn proudly boasts an all-female distilling team. Led by Ditillery Manager Laura Davies, along with Blender Aista Jukneviciute and Trainee Distiller Bethan Morgans.

If you want to catch up on what all the tweet tasters had to say you can view their comments by searching for the hash tag #PenderynWhisky on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Penderyn Madeira Finish (46%)

Penderyn Madeira Finish: 46% ABV – Single Malt Welsh Whisky – Available from their
online store for £41.82 (inc delivery)

The original Penderyn ‘house style’, initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels (Buffalo Trace) and finished in ex-Madeira wine casks.

Nose: Juicy, crisp green apples with toffee, cereal, a little banana and citrus. There are shades of wood and later on strong aromas of fruit salad sweets which is very welcome!

Palate: Those green apples coming through – quite a sweet dram.

Finish: A little vanilla and then a sharp, intense, peppery finish.

Overall: Pleasant dram with tasty fruits and toffee.

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt
  • The Whisky Shop

Tasting Notes – Penderyn Rich Oak (46%)

Penderyn Rich Oak: 46% ABV – Single Malt Welsh Whisky – Available from their online store for £48.00 (inc delivery)

Matured in a combination of specially selected ex-bourbon (Buffalo Trace) and rejuvenated oak casks.

Nose: Creamy toffee, sultanas and apples with some nice orange and cherry. It’s waxy with aromas reminiscent of old books.

Palate: Toffee, some apple and very spicy with fruity, creamy, strawberry tang!

Finish: More spice and it all goes together very nicely!

Overall: A fuller dram with more rich flavours than the Madeira Finish.

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt
  • The Whisky Shop

Tasting Notes – Penderyn Sherrywood (46%)

Penderyn Sherrywood: 46% ABV – Single Malt Welsh Whisky – Available from their online store for £45.28 (inc delivery)

Matured in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels (Buffalo Trace) and ex-Oloroso sherry casks.

Nose: Slow to impart for me this one … A little indistinct with hints of floral, some familiar toffee and cereal but sadly, no sherry aromas.

Palate: Palate is much better than the nose. Some nice toffee notes, very buttery.

Finish: A snappy, peppery finish!

Overall: Not for me sadly but a lot of the other twitter tasters on the night gave it a big thumbs-up! I’ll have to give it another go sometime soon.

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt
  • The Whisky Shop

Tasting Notes – Penderyn Portwood (46%)

Penderyn Portwood: 46% ABV – Single Malt Welsh Whisky – Available from their online store for £62.60 (inc delivery)

Initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels (Buffalo Trace) and finished in ex-port casks.

Nose: Port washed fruits and woody aromas – very nice! I’m getting strawberry creams, melted toffee and those fruit salad sweets from earlier are making another appearance but this time cherries have joined them!

Palate: Very sweet and jamy – rather lovely in fact! Bramble jam and sweet port (all jams on toast should be required to have it like that!) with some lovely tropical fruit flavours in the background.

Finish: Smooth and sweet to the last with no real discernable spiciness. Saying that it’s perfectly palatable and not over-sweet at all.

Overall: Glorious dram with lots of aroma and flavour. Highly recommended!

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt
  • The Whisky Shop

Tasting Notes – Penderyn Peated (46%)

Penderyn Peated: 46% ABV – Single Malt Welsh Whisky – Available from their online store for £47.77 (inc delivery)

Initially matured in ex-bourbon barrels (Buffalo Trace) for between 5-8 years, before being finished in ex-Laphroaig casks for several months.

Nose: Yum! Smokehouse rules! Lovely ‘liquid’ smoke with an absract of peat and sweet lemon. In there as well is buttery popcorn and burnt sugar.

Palate: Subtle blend of sweet fruits (lemon) and smokiness – very palatable indeed!

Finish: Buttery, enjoyable finish – again, no pepper but that’s okay!

Overall: A very nice peated dram – very accessable to those new to peated whiskies – and, to be honest, very palatable to those who are well-versed in peated whiskies!

Available to buy from these Merchants:-

  • The Whisky Exchange
  • Master of Malt
  • The Whisky Shop

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the 5, I think it’s got to be the Penderyn Portwood – I nearly went for the Peated but the Portwood was a nicely balanced revelation!

Many thanks to Penderyn for providing their drams!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire / @TweetTastings) for a great evening and Penderyn (@PenderynWhisky) for sending the samples and without whom!
