Evan Williams - 23 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon

Evan Williams – 23 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon
Country: American   Region: American
Age: 23 Year Old   Strength: 53.50%
Summary: The Evan Williams Single Barrel is produced to honour Evan Williams who is, widely known as Kentucky’s first distiller. Born a Welshman, settled in Virginia and in 1780 moved to what became Kentucky, he grew crops, and he soon learnt that converting his corn and other grains to whiskey made them easily transportable and prevented the excess grain from rotting. Williams set up his small distillery on the Ohio River at the foot of what is now Fifth Street in Louisville. According to an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal of 29 April 1889, “Williams was a member of the early Board of Trustees of Louisville, …he never attended a meeting without bringing a bottle of his whiskey, and that was always drank.” He was censured every time for doing so, but he never left with a full jug ! He died in October of 1810.
Delicate aroma, with hints of spice, vanilla and some malty dried fruits. Initially slightly sweet, moving on with a touch of spice, citrus and apple and an edge of grain. Well-balanced and tight with some punch and an edge of rye appearing. Delicate touches of cocoa, more spice and a little butterscotch sweetness. Crisp and peppery at the end with a distinctive rye touch.

24 Year Old Invergordon - Berry's Own Selection

24 Year Old Invergordon – Berry’s Own Selection
Country: Scotland   Region: Lowland
Age:    Strength: 46%
Summary: Invergordon distillery is located on the shores of the Cromarty firth in the north-east Highlands of Scotland. Founded in 1959, it is the only grain distillery in the Highlands and for a few years also had the Ben Wyvis malt distillery on the site but this closed in 1975.
The nose gives toasted oak, apple and melon skins with an uplifting menthol note. There is some honeyed depth and cinnamon spice. The palate is beautifully expansive with bourbon cask notes, buttery vanilla and cream caramel. The delivery is almost angelic and long lingering.

Ardbeg - 10 Year Old Single Malt

Ardbeg – 10 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age: 10 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance.
Typically most whiskies are chill-filtered and reduced to a strength of 40% ABV. Ardbeg Ten Years Old, however, is non chill-filtered and has a strength of 46% ABV, thus retaining maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth. It’s whisky with none of the goodness taken out!
Colour: Light gold.
Aroma: A burst of intense smoky fruit escapes into the atmosphere – peat infused with zesty lemon and lime, wrapped in waxy dark chocolate.
Bold menthol and black pepper slice through the sweet smoke followed by tarry ropes and graphite. As you dip your nose in further, savour the aroma of smoked fish and crispy bacon alongside green bell peppers, baked pineapple and pear juice.
Add water and breathe in the vortex of aromas rising from the glass. An oceanic minerality brings a breath of cool, briny seaspray on chalky cliffs. Waxed lemon and lime follows with coal tar soap, beeswax and herby pine woodlands. Toasted vanilla and sizzling cinnamon simmer in the background with warm hazelnut and almond toffee.
Taste: An explosion of crackling peat sets off millions of flavour explosions on the tongue: peat effervesces with tangy lemon and lime juice, black pepper pops with sizzling cinnamon-spiced toffee. This is followed by a wave of brine infused with smooth buttermilk, ripe bananas and currants. Smoke gradually wells up on the palate bringing a mouthful of warm creamy cappuccino and toasted marshmallows. As the taste lengthens and deepens, dry espresso, liquorice root and tarry smoke develop coating the palate with chewy peat oils.
Finish: The finish goes on and on – long and smoky with tarry espresso, aniseed, toasted almonds and traces of soft barley and fresh pear.

20 Year Old Glen Moray - Berry's Own Selection

20 Year Old Glen Moray – Berry’s Own Selection
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 20 Year Old   Strength: 57.3%
Summary: Nose: a lovely intertwining of polished oaky floors and muscavado-polished barley;
Taste: deliveries on the palate rarely come more delicious than this: Glen Moray, when on form, is in the true malty elite of Scotland and here it tops the Premier League. The blend of sugars, some honeyed, spices and cocoa make you groan with pleasure;
Finish: the vanilla and butterscotch kick in as you suspect they might. But the barley remains steadfast and clean;
Balance: I have long regarded Berry’s whisky buyer Dougie McIvor one of the genuinely understated gems of the industry and the best whisky writer we never had. Here he demonstrates his understanding of clean, barley-rich malts which has made this year’s crop of Berry’s Own Selection arguably their best yet. When you taste this you can see why I exploded in rage at the deficiencies of the official ‘Distillery manager’ bottling a few years back…

Compass Box - The Peat Monster Tenth Anniversary Limited Release

Compass Box – The Peat Monster Tenth Anniversary Limited Release
Country: Scotland   Region: IslayHighlands
Age:    Strength: 48.9%
Summary: Ten years ago we created a bespoke blend of very peaty single malts for the owners of the Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York.
We named it “Monster” and for the label graphics we used a 19th century illustration of a bizarre and strangely beautiful creature that appeared to us to capture the idea of the whisky.
It sold so well that when it became endangered we decided to share the idea with the rest of the world. We appended “The Peat” to the front of “Monster” and breathed fresh life into the beautiful beast. It has gone on to become our best-selling Compass Box whisky.
In 2013, let’s celebrate ten years of sharing the joys of the craft blender’s art, of inspiring others in the industry and of enjoying the balanced, peaty charms of this creation.
HEAVY PEAT AND SMOKE, COMBINED WITH NOTES OF MALTY RICHNESS
For this special bottling, we have produced a special recipe of The Peat Monster, maintaining the smoky, heavy-peated intensity of the classic bottling and adding a bit more malty richness through the use of some very special, quite odd casks of peaty Highland single malt.
Flavour Descriptors: Intense aromas of peet-reek, smoke, seaside character and burnt ropes, with a subtle apple-fruitiness in the background. The palate is full, round and tremendously complex. Water brings out a spice-laden, sweet vanilla character, as well.
Availability: A one-off, limited release of 5,700 bottles. Bottled in September 2013.
Recommendations: A fantastic late-night digestif malt whisky.
Distillery Sourcing: Islay single malts distilled on the south shore of the island and in the village of Port Askaig. Balanced with a rich, smoky Highland single malt and a fruity oily malt from the village of Brora.
Wood: Primarily a mix of first-fill and refill American oak, plus approximately 2% new French oak for finishing.

Tomintoul - With A Peaty Tang

Tomintoul – With A Peaty Tang
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength: 40%
Summary: Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle.The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp.
Nose: takes me back to my early teens, spending schooldays working on a farm: pure farmyard with an earthy yet fruity punch. The sort of complex nose that almost makes you forget to drink the stuff … almost … ;
Taste: a gentle coating of vaguely sweet peat that multiplies in intensity; salivating yet chewy. Some liquorice and hickory notes make their drying mark;
Finish: distinctly gristy and unusually dry for a smoky malt. Long, luscious and not a little oaky late on;
Balance: a bit more than a tang, believe me! Faultlessly clean distillate that revels in its unaccustomed peaty role. The age is confusing and appears mixed, with both young and older traits being evident.

Tomintoul - 16 Year Old Single Malt

Tomintoul – 16 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 16 Year Old   Strength: 40%
Summary: Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed.
For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle.The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp.
Nose: a fruity concoction of apples and pears topped with vanilla ice cream; even the vaguest hint of something smoky – one of the noses of the year!
Taste: soft, indeed every bit as gentle as the label promises, as the light oils coat the palate with a fabulously intense and delicately sweetened barley skin. The skeleton is playful oak;
Finish: a wonderful, multi-layered interplay between malt and oak-vanillas. Long, curiously spice-free, increasingly dry but hugely sophisticated
Balance: confirms Tomtintoul’s ability to dice with greatness.

Tomintoul - Old Ballantruan

Tomintoul – Old Ballantruan “the Peated Malt”
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: N/A   Strength: 50%
Summary: “Old Ballantruan” Speyside Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky is distilled in the traditional manner in the prestigious Speyside Glenlivet region, and unusually for this district, it is made with heavily-peated malted barley to impart a distinctive and unique flavour.

“Old Ballantruan” owes its name to an exceptional source of the purest of waters, the Ballantruan Spring, nestling in the Cromdale Hills close to Tomintoul, the highest village in the Scottish Highlands.

After ‘sleeping’ for many years in hand-picked oak barrels, this whisky has been bottled at 50% volume and without any chill-filtration in order to retain its layered and integrated peaty flavours.

70cl / 40% / Gordon & Macphail – A lip-smacking sherried Speyside at an amazing 49 years of age. Very few whiskies can stand this kind of ageing, which is just one of the reasons that Glen Grant is a great malt. The perfect gift for anyone born in 1957.
