Where’s Our Whisky Emoji?

August 4, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

Where’s Our Whisky Emoji?

Where’s Our Whisky Emoji?

Ballantine’s have uncovered a surprising fact – we have NO Whisky Emoji!

If you don’t know what an Emoji is, it’s a little pictograph, the commonest being smiley faces. It appears on the internet everywhere and is most commonly used to highlight phone messages.

The Emoji range has expanded to include all manner of images: fruit, people, feet – you name it.

Except for one …

Ballantine’s realised that beer drinkers have been able to share with their friends the imminent enjoyment of a pint using the beer emoji.

Wine lovers, cocktail fans and even martini enthusiasts have been able to spruce up their texts about their favourite tipples with a selection of emojis.

But why is there no whisky emoji available to celebrate their favourite Scotch?

This inequality has gone on for too long, so Ballantine’s is rallying support from whisky lovers around the world to make the #WhiskyEmoji a reality!

The #WhiskyEmoji movement is gathering momentum online, but we still need your help to get this created.

If we can garner enough support, we will put the case to the makers of emojis, Unicode, that whisky drinkers need a whisky emoji in their lives.

Together, we can make this happen.

If you’re a whisky fan (which of course, you all are) and if you believe in the freedom of expression, please show your support on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using #WhiskyEmoji #StayTrue.

Join the campaign now at www.whiskyemoji.com and help Ballantine’s make #WhiskyEmoji happen!

Chivas Regal Announces The First Chivas Master

July 17, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

(L-R) Dave Arnold with winner Masahiro Urushido and Max Warner, Chivas Global Brand Ambassador

(L-R) Dave Arnold with winner Masahiro Urushido and Max Warner,
Chivas Global Brand Ambassador

American bartender, Masahiro Urushido, has been revealed as Chivas Regal’s first ever Chivas Master, winning the iconic whisky brand’s inaugural bartender competition in style at the NoMad hotel in New York (15th July 2014).

During the national heats, competitors were tasked with creating a new classic cocktail that would stand the test of time – just as Chivas does – inspired by one of the four great cocktail eras; the Classic Age (1880-1920) which saw the birth of Chivas Regal; the Post War Boom (1945-1965) during which time, Chivas 12 was introduced; the Disco Years (1975-1990) which saw the brand become a truly global icon, and the present modern Age of Revivalism.

Masahiro said: “It’s an honour to be chosen as the first Chivas Master.
As a bartender, I am well aware of the long heritage of Chivas so immersing myself into the history of cocktails to create a drink that can stand the test of time has been very inspirational.

I am excited to share this experience with my fellow bartenders and to introduce my The New Pal cocktail to my customers in New York.
I hope that it encourages other bartenders around the world to create new Chivas cocktails inspired by the great classics”.

Max Warner, Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal, commented: “From Australia to Israel, Chile to China, there was talent from all over the world involved in the competition and we are very excited with the success of the inaugural Chivas Masters.

The global cocktail scene is seeing a growing interest in classic-inspired modern cocktails and, as a brand proud to be nurturing the bartending community, we look forward to continuing to inspire the on-trade to create great cocktails steeped in heritage, such as the one created by the very talented Masahiro Urushido.”

All competitors who took part in the final are now to conclude their trip with a visit to the world’s premier cocktail festival ‘Tales of the Cocktail’ in New Orleans, where Chivas is sponsoring the Best American/International Cocktail Bar at the Spirited Awards.

2014 Edition Of Midleton Very Rare Released

July 15, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

Midleton Very Rare

Midleton Very Rare

Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard has unveiled the 2014 edition of its prestigious Midleton Very Rare whiskey, the first to be hand selected by Master Distiller, Brian Nation, following his appointment in 2013.

Midleton Very Rare 2014 is the first to bear Nation’s signature on its label, continuing the tradition established by former Master Distiller Barry Crockett when he created the first Midleton Very Rare whiskey in 1984.

Anna Malmhake, Chairman and CEO at Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, says: “It’s always exciting for us to release a new Midleton Very Rare expression as it really shows the outstanding quality that the Irish whiskey category has to offer, but this 2014 release is extra special as it heralds a new era for us as Brian Nation takes the reins from Barry Crockett at our Midleton Distillery.

“Midleton Very Rare is a whiskey with real provenance, produced at the distillery in Midleton using only the finest ingredients and is rightfully regarded as the pinnacle of Irish whiskeys by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide, who cherish the nuances of each release. As Brian carries on the Midleton Very Rare legacy, we look forward to more discerning drinkers around the world discovering the quality and provenance that Irish whiskeys have to offer.”

Master Distiller Brian Nation, added: “It is a real honour for me to continue the Midleton Very Rare legacy and to have my name on the label, where Barry’s signature once was. I’m very proud of the 2014 edition, as it offers real complexity with a full taste of sweet spice, vanilla, and cinnamon, which lingers before slowly giving way to notes of barley. I am confident that it will provide whiskey fans around the world with the interesting and enjoyable tasting experience that they have come to expect from Midleton Very Rare over the years – and I look forward to hearing what Barry thinks of it too!”

Midleton Very Rare 2014 Tasting Notes

Aroma
Rich, with vanilla sweetness on a layer of oak char from the influence of American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels. A soft floral note introduces the sweet spice of cinnamon, green pepper, and garden mint. Beautifully rounded with hints of green apple and banana.

Taste
Full, with the sweet spice of vanilla, cinnamon, and liquorice and the flinty note of barley grains. Ripe fruit combines with the charred oak, adding to the complexity.

Finish
Sweet spicy flavours that linger, fading slowly to leave the last word with the barley.

Over time the story became legend and the prophecy drifted from memory. Until 1938, when Charles Campbell, blind in one eye from the Great War, fell on hard times and led his white horse to the old pier for the last time.
