Edencroft Price Promise & New Malts

January 3, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Edencroft has just announced that they are now going to include a ‘Price Promise’ as part of their ongoing commitment to providing a great service.

Here is what they have to say:-

We know price is really important, and that is why we put so much effort into getting it right. We check and match the online and shop prices of our high street competitors. We even match competitors’ sale prices.
Our commitment to value is about much more than highly competitive prices, it´s about all those extra things that are worth a lot – like expert and impartial advice, or feeling confident that the product you´ve just bought is right. It might even be the knowledge that we´re responsible in our sourcing.

So, if you see or buy a product from us and find it cheaper with a high street competitor, as long as their service conditions are comparable, such as delivery charges and guarantee terms, then we´ll match that price for you when you buy, or refund the difference for up to 28 days afterwards if you´ve already purchased.

With that in mind Edencroft has 4 New additions to it’s range this week with whiskies from the Island and Islay regions.

The brands include Caol Ila, Highland Park, Laphroaig & Talisker.

December 20, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Master of Malt have reduced the minimum order from a case of 6, down to just one bottle!

Master of Malt have reduced the minimum order from a case of 6, down to just one bottle!

Due to the initial success of our Master Of Malt’s Blend Your Own Whisky service, they are now able to offer whisky lovers the ability to order just a *single bottle* of their own blend, rather than the previous minimum order of a case of six bottles.

So, Whisky lovers can now visit the Blend Your Own Whisky page and literally create a blended whisky of their very own using a set of sliders to adjust the quantities of 10 different “ingredients”.

Once this is done, the whisky’s label can be personalised with a name and then ordered. It couldn’t be simpler…

The service has become a huge success almost overnight, with hundreds of whisky lovers already using it. Now that it has become so popular Master of Malt have reduced the minimum order from a case of 6, down to just one bottle!

This means you can now create your very own, custom blended whisky and order a single bottle from as little as £33.58!

For years, only a very select few ever had the opportunity to blend their own whisky, but now Master of Malt has created a simple, easy-to-use webpage allowing anyone to try their hand at whisky blending! These custom blends make the ultimate gift for friends and family. It is also perfect for anyone who just can’t find a blended whisky they really like, because they can now make their own Scotch as sweet, smoky, peaty or fruity as they could ever wish!

To help create the blend, Master of Malt is also selling a Home Blending Kit, which contains samples of each of the 10 different blending whiskies (including malt and grain “base whiskies”, various single malts for the core of the blend, and some very old, very rare top-dressers). The kit also contains measuring equipment, a conical flask and a tasting glass to allow you to perfect your recipe before having it made up.

December 15, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Hermitage Wood Finish

Hermitage Wood Finish

Two new rare Single Malt Whiskies are being added to Gordon & MacPhail’s portfolio of over 300 whiskies under the firms Private Collection label.

Sporting re-designed packaging, the two malts have been personally selected by the Urquhart family, Directors of the firm, for their outstanding character and quality.

Two new additions to this collection include Gordon & MacPhail Private Collection Hermitage Wood Finish 1997 (45%) from Caol Ila Distillery. Established in 1846 the distillery is hidden in a cove near Port Askaig, on Islay. After finishing in Hermitage casks for 30 months the Caol Ila character is laced with rich, fruity overtones – blackberries and cherries combine with the earthy smokiness of the whisky. Its availability is limited to just 800 bottles.

Cote Rotie Wood Finish

Cote Rotie Wood Finish

Gordon & MacPhail Private Collection Côte Rôtie Wood Finish 1991 (45%) from Linkwood Distillery has been finished in Côte Rôtie casks for 30 months and has developed rich, summer fruit aromas with vanilla and roasted malt notes. Linkwood Distillery, established in 1821, is located on the outskirts of Elgin.

1900 bottles have been released for sale.

Gordon & MacPhail’s Joint Managing Director David Urquhart said: “The skill and care displayed in the selection of casks to match that character of individual whiskies is abundantly evident in these two Private Collection malts. Talisker’s New Image Makeover

December 9, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The New Look Talisker Carton

The New Look Talisker Carton

TALISKER, the celebrated Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the Isle of Skye, is being given a new family identity as it continues to grow in markets around the world.

The single malt whisky itself has, of course, not changed.

Powerful maritime photography on the new outer cartons and more prominent maps of Skye on both cartons and bottle labels now anchor the brand more strongly in its rugged island home and emphasise its Made by the Sea character.

The wrap-around images on the new cartons were shot by Skye-based photographer Cailean Maclean, and feature stormy waves crashing against the Isle of Skye’s rocky and mountainous coast. Cailean’s photography transforms into a striking coastal vista when two cartons stand side by side. The images are reinforced by Cailean’s signed commentary on each scene.

Cailean’s photography features on most cartons, but the Talisker 18 year old carton carries an equally turbulent seascape image by Scottish photographer and Skye enthusiast Angus Bremner.

Mark Lochhead, manager at Talisker Distillery on Skye, is enthusiastic about the new designs: “Talisker is made by the sea in every sense of the word, just as all our lives are shaped by the elements here on Skye. To have this captured in these new designs is exciting for everyone here. At the same time it both speaks to our own roots and helps consumers understand what kind of place Skye is.

“More than this, the strong impression I think the new packaging gives is of a family united, of all the expressions of Talisker now being brought together in one design family, so that Talisker can march forward strongly as a brand in its own right. And understandably, I rather like that idea!”

The redesigns were carried out by Claessens International, the drinks brand design consultancy.

James Boulton at Claessens said: “The new Talisker designs are born of our experience, meeting the people at the distillery and seeing at first hand how Talisker relates to its home, the Isle of Skye. Armed with that understanding and building on earlier ‘maritime’ designs, we have added a richness of detail and a ruggedness to reinforce what Talisker stands for and what kind of place it comes from.”

The Talisker Bottle Label Has Also Had An Update

The Talisker Bottle Label Has Also Had An Update

The new designs are being introduced onto bottles and cartons progressively, as new stocks are bottled and distributed. Talisker 10 year old will be the first to see the new carton in Great Britain before Christmas 2011 and the revised labels will follow shortly in the New Year.

In Great Britain, for Christmas 2011, the new carton for the 10 year old will initially carry the RNLI flash that signals the brand’s support for this famous British maritime charity. In some cases the new cartons will enclose the old-style bottles until stocks are sold through.

Diageo has also announced that from 2011, Talisker 25 year old and Talisker 30 year old will be available on a regular basis within the Talisker range – although necessarily in limited editions, and bottled at the traditional Talisker strength of 45.8% ABV. In the past, these long-aged expressions of Talisker have only been issued at cask strength in Diageo’s annual Special Releases series.

A bottle of whisky from Gordon & MacPhail’s Rare Vintage Range, Strathisla 1970, has become one of the highest scoring whiskies in the 2011 “Malt Maniacs” Awards.

Despite almost 200 entries, the Gordon & MacPhail Strathisla 1970, bottled at 43%, was among only eight whiskies to achieve a gold medal, 90 points, and was also the winner of the ‘Thumbs Up’ award for most exciting new release of the year in that price category.

Malt Maniacs, which is in its ninth year, say theirs is “probably the world’s most independent whisky competition and perhaps the most gruelling!”

Michael Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said: “To be awarded a gold medal and Thumbs Up award ahead of another 171 fine whiskies is a wonderful achievement. The Strathisla 1970 is testament to our approach for matching the right type of cask to this particular whisky.”

New Cambus Cooperage Opens – Roll Out The Barrel!

December 2, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Robot loading cask for firing

Robot loading cask for firing

Recognising the still-growing demand around the world for Scotch, particularly in the emerging markets of Asia and Latin America, Diageo is investing in growing Scotch whisky production capacity across Scotland.
To accommodate additional production, a good supply of top quality oaks casks is needed, so Diageo has built a new state-of-the art Cooperage at Cambus, near Alloa in Fife.

The coopers there will craft around 250,000 casks each year – all of which will be used to mature Scotch whisky for Diageo’s world leading brands, such as Johnnie Walker and J&B Rare, and Diageo’s famous collection of single malt Scotch whiskies like Talisker, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Oban and The Singleton of Glen Ord.

The Cambus site – the first new cooperage to be built in Scotland for decades – has been designed “by the coopers for the coopers”, drawing on generations of skill, craft and experience and combining it with the state-of-the-art British engineering – never before used in a cooperage – to dramatically improve the working lives of the coopers.

Diageo has invested £10 million in the new purpose-built cooperage. It employs over 100 people: 40 coopers, 39 operators and team leaders and has eight apprentices. A further 20 people are involved in maintenance, transport and support services.

Calum Bruce, Prince Edward, Brian Law

Calum Bruce, Prince Edward, Brian Law

The new Cambus cooperage was opened on 28 November by His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex, who toured the new cooperage and met a range of time-served coopers, including some with decades of experience in the trade, as well Diageo’s apprentice coopers who are now able to hone their skills in a custom-built coopering school within the new cooperage.

Calum Bruce, 51, one of Diageo’s longest serving coopers with 35 years’ service, having started in the trade at age 16, explained the difference the new ways of working had made to the coopers.

He said: “A lot has changed over the last 35 years, but the basic skills have stayed the same. But Cambus is something different altogether. We still use the same skills to do the same job, but the difference is the machines now do a lot of the heavy lifting so we don’t have to spend time and effort on hard labour and we can focus on the skilled part of the job. That is what has really transformed the way we work.”

Classic coopering skills& strength are still needed

Classic coopering skills& strength are still needed

Brian Law, one of eight apprentices currently learning their trade on Diageo’s four-year apprentice scheme, also welcomed the investment the company has made in the future of the trade. He said: “It is a really exciting time to be learning my trade as a cooper. At Cambus, Diageo has an investment in the future of coopering and that’s also an investment in the futures of all the guys who work here.”

“We wanted to maximise the craft skills which are the core of the job, while using smart technology to minimise the back-breaking bending and heavy-lifting which causes physical damage to the guys doing the job.”

Tom Duncan, a manager at Cambus, was one of the team tasked with leading the new cooperage project and explained the ethos behind the cooperage: “It’s not often you get to start with a blank sheet of paper and design something like this from scratch. From the start the basic principal was that this would be a cooperage designed by coopers for coopers.”

“We wanted to maximise the craft skills which are the core of the job, while using smart technology to minimise the back-breaking bending and heavy-lifting which causes physical damage to the guys doing the job.”

To achieve this, the Diageo team turned to Leicester-based engineering firm CI Logistics, which works primarily in the car industry, and together they custom-designed a series of mechanical conveyors to move the casks – which weigh up to 85kg when empty – around the cooperage between the hand-craft elements of the process. The result is the world’s most unique and innovative cooperage.

Benromach whisky reaches £500 at online auction

A unique and collectable bottle of signed whisky from Speyside’s smallest distillery has been sold for £500 in an online auction with proceeds going to a local rescue charity. (See our previous post for details.)

Distillery manager, Keith Cruickshank, and infamous online whisky commentator, Ralf Mitchell, signed the bottle of Benromach single cask for the charitable auction, which was hosted at the Scotch Whisky Auctions.

The money raised from the sale will go to Findhorn based Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (M.I.R.O) who are an independent rescue service manned entirely by volunteers.

Keith Cruikshank said the online auction, which finished on Sunday (November 27), was a great success.

He said: “We are thrilled by to have raised so much money for M.I.R.O, a local charity, based only a few miles away from the Benromach Distillery. It was a very unique bottle of Benromach single cask whisky, hand bottled for
Ralf Mitchell at our distillery last month, and is the only bottle to be bottled at that exact point in time so we are pleased it was such a hit with collectors and whisky enthusiasts across the globe.”

The winner also received an exclusive selection of Benromach merchandise including a sample bottle of whisky, two blender glasses, key ring, polo shirt, wallet, stow bag, calendar and a newsletter signed by David and Michael Urquhart.

Ralf Mitchell, commonly known as Ralfy, also donated a memory stick, containing Vlogs about the auction and hand written tasting notes.

Previous charitable auctions of similar products have seen funds of around £400 raised.
