TALISKER SPONSORS WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROWING RACE

November 5, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge

TALISKER, the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky made in the Isle of Skye, is now the title sponsor of the of the Woodvale Atlantic Challenge.

The Atlantic Challenge, which starts next month, is the world’s toughest rowing race. It will be known as The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The race is biennial; the Talisker sponsorship will run for at least the 2011 and the 2013 races.

The 2011 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge starts on 4 December in the Spanish port of San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands and follows the ‘Columbus Route’, west-bound across the mid-Atlantic to Port St Charles in Barbados.

The Challenge is international: crews are entering from Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and the USA.

The race is 2,549 nautical miles (2,933 regular miles); but when bad weather and adverse conditions are factored in, most teams will row well over 3,000 miles during their Atlantic crossing. Competitors are expected to arrive in the Caribbean from mid-January onwards. Not all teams succeed in finishing the crossing.

For Talisker, Ben Booth, Western Europe Brand Manager for Talisker, said:

“For many of its adorers, Talisker, made by the sea in the Isle of Skye, represents passion, confidence, challenge and achievement – uncompromising emotions that will characterise the daring participants in this fierce and demanding endeavour.

“The smell and taste of Talisker instantly connect you with the rugged environment where it is made– like a warm welcome from a wild sea. So we are proud to be involved and wish all the competitors the best of luck.”

Woodvale Challenge organiser Gemma Campbell said:

“We are thrilled to be able to announce Talisker Whisky as title sponsor for the race. The philosophy and the values that Talisker embody are a great symbol for the race and we are proud to have their involvement. All the company staff and race entrants are excited to be part of this big adventure with Talisker at the helm!”

Talisker, in its widely distributed 10 year old expression, is a powerhouse Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a formidable peat and sea-salt nose; smoky sweetness with malt flavours; and developing warmth with a huge, peppery finish. It is the only single malt whisky made on the dramatic Isle of Skye, where the distillery has been making this award-winning single malt whisky since 1830.

Benromach to Share the Secret with the Arts

November 5, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach, the Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is pleased to announce that it sponsored contemporary London art gallery Beers.Lambert’s production Systems Beyond Certainty.

The show at Project Space on Vyner Street in London ran on November 2 and 3.

London art gallery Beers.Lambert’s production Systems Beyond Certainty

London art gallery Beers.Lambert’s production Systems Beyond Certainty

Systems Beyond Certainty presents constructs of time, nature and space as structured, ideological concepts that provide simultaneously real and imagined delineations to our perception of the natural world.
Five artists consider these concepts as metaphor and reality, offering a re-evaluation of their surroundings in a context that provides contemplation for the relationship between the definite and the imagined.

The exhibition is conceived through several distinct themes: the natural world, the utopian versus the dystopian, the spatial, the psychological, and the futuristic sublime.
The work drives pertinent questions intoabstract representations of The Present and The Future in lieu of a constructed versus natural world – the status of normalcy or the pursuit of constructed perfection.
While artists such as Kevin Cooley and Peter Matthews seem to offer views of the constructed or natural works in crisis, other artists such as Gillian Lawler appear to present re-affirmations of these themes through the representations of the future.

Commenting on the deal, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said:
“The Beers.Lambert is the perfect partner for Benromach. It is a pleasure to be associated with such a contemporary art gallery that features really cutting edge talent from around the world, which we feel reflects many of the distinctive qualities of the various expressions or our malt whisky. We look forward to the success of Systems Beyond Certainty and to be able to share the secret of Benromach with the audience.”

All attendees attending the performance were invited to sample Benromach Ten Year, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke and received a miniature Benromach 10 year old to take away.

Director of Beers.Lambert, Kurt Beers said: “I wanted to combine my love of whisky and fine art which is why I have invited around 200 fine art enthusiasts to a private viewing and reception at our London gallery.
I esteem my gallery for exhibiting only the finest in emergent and stimulating visual arts internationally and I believe Benromach would be an exceptional compliment to the clean, crisp, contemporary feel of the work on exhibit.”

About Benromach

Established in 1898, Benromach distillery changed hands many times and was virtually derelict when bought by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. Drawing on generations of whisky expertise, the company carried out a painstaking refurbishment, and the distillery was officially re-opened by Prince Charles in 1998.
Just two men hand-craft Benromach using the finest Scottish barely and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They fill new spirit into the highest quality casks before being left to mature at the distillery for many years. The Benromach portfolio includes the award winning Benromach 10 Years Old and the first fully certified organic single malt – Benromach Organic.

Benromach Ten Years Old

Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional

A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins

A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.

Movember, Master Of Malt, Glenfarclas and Wet Whiskers!

November 1, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glenfarclas - Movember 2011

Glenfarclas - Movember 2011

Master Of Malt has released a limited edition Glenfarclas, the Glenfarclas – Movember 2011 which has been bottled in partnership with online retailers, Mo-Bro’s in support of Movember.

Movember is a men’s health charity which raises awareness and funds for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world.

£10 from the sale of every bottle of Glenfarclas – Movember 2011 will be donated to Movember.

So, what about the Glenfarclas – Movember 2011?

This 9 year old Glenfarclas was distilled in September 2002 and bottled in September 2011. The whisky has been taken from two Oloroso sherry hogshead casks and has been described as an ‘aperitif whisky’.

It has an amazing dark, rich, golden colour and is certainly not your typical Glenfarclas.

Here’s my tasting verdict:-
Nose: Immediate hit of rich, warm sherry.

Palate: Very sweet, fruit with a hint of zest.

Finish: Christmas cake and hints of spice and a dry finish.

Overall: Like MOM says, very morish. “Like another?” “Don’t mind if I do.”

Don’t forget, Glenfarclas – Movember 2011 is a Limited Edition and for the taste alone is not likely to stay on the shelves too long.
Bearing in mind that it’s part of the Movember campaign, I think you’ll have to be quick and secure a bottle if you want to get your whiskers wet!

For more information on Movember visit www.movember.com.

A Benromach Best in Whisky Bible 2012

October 24, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach 30YO - Best Single Malt Scotch whisky

Benromach 30YO - Best Single Malt Scotch whisky

Benromach has been awarded the Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky in the latest edition of the world’s leading whisky guide.

Benromach 30 Years Old was described as “magnificent, one of the outstanding malts of the year”, scoring 95.5 points out of 100, in Jim Murray’s famous Whisky Bible which published its 2012 edition today.

The prestigious accolade adds to the growing list of awards for the whiskies from Speyside’s smallest working distillery and the increasing success of Benromach across the UK and internationally.
Export sales of Benromach increased by 24 per cent in the first nine months of the year to 36 countries across the globe. Earlier in the year the brands flagship Single Malt, Benromach 10 Years Old was awarded gold at the 2011 Great Taste Awards.

Operating under the management of Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is handcrafted by just two experienced distillers. Using their unique skills they have developed the distillery’s portfolio which includes the popular Benromach 10 Year Old and Benromach Organic – the world’s first fully certified organic single malt.

Proud to have been honoured by the Whisky Bible awards, David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said:

“It’s a great achievement to be given this award. More people across the globe are adopting whisky as their drink of choice as they actively seek out high quality, desirable items that have a unique appeal. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of Benromach and being recognised by the Whisky Bible 2012 can only boost our success over the coming year.”

The Whisky Bible contains over 4,500 tasting notes on whiskies across the globe and includes 1,200 new entries personally sampled by Jim Murray. Benromach 30 Year Old was awarded the Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky 28-34 Years (Multiple Casks).

It follows recent gold awards by the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival 2011 for Benromach 2001, Cask Strength and Organic Special Edition.

Jim Murray describes Benromach 30 Years Old in the 2012 Whisky Bible tasting notes as:

Benromach 30 Years Old (95.5) spiced sultana, walnuts and polished bookcases; no malt has the right to be anything near so silky. The sugars are a cunning mix of molasses and muscovado; the honey is thinned manuka. Still the barley gets through, though the vanilla is right behind…; drier, but never fully dries and has enough spotted dog in reserve to make for a moist, lightly spiced finish. And finally a thin strata of sweet, Venezualan cocoa; you will struggle to find a 30-year-old with less wrinkles than this.. Magnificent: one of the outstanding malts of the year. 43%

Glengoyne Distillery Renovations And Their Best Season Ever

October 21, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glengoyne's New Distillery Shop

Glengoyne's New Distillery Shop

Glengoyne Distillery is celebrating the launch of a brand new shop and visitor centre upgrade on the back of its most successful summer season ever.

The changes at Glengoyne, which include a complete overhaul of the shop as well as updates to the visitor centre, were completed in time for the end of the summer season which has so far seen a massive 48,500 visitors through the doors of ‘Scotland’s Most Beautiful Distillery’ – a 6% rise on last year.

A total of £300,000 has been invested in the visitor facilities upgrade in 2011 with further renovations planned for 2012. This comes in addition to the £200,000 spent on renovating the Manager’s House in 2007 for use as an events space and more than £2.5 million spent on operational upgrades to the distillery such as new warehousing and stills.

Glengoyne Distillery Shop - "Pour Your Own"

Glengoyne Distillery Shop - "Pour Your Own"

New features inside the shop include a new tasting area and the ‘Pour Your Own Dram’ facility, where guests are given the chance to fill and label their own bottle direct from an exclusive single cask, before logging it in the customs book. The cask currently available is an American Oak First Fill hoggie from June 2000, cask number 1016. It offers great tropical fruit flavours and plenty of hands-on whisky fun, priced at £75.00.

Glengoyne Brand Heritage Manager Stuart Hendry said: “The old shop area was very dark and didn’t make good use of space. Our brief to retail design agency Contagious was to create a brighter, more organised shopping area which showed off our award winning range but without losing the distinct Glengoyne character.

“I think we have hit the nail on the head and we are extremely happy with the outcome. Feedback from customers has been great and we have seen an increase in sales as a result.”

The shop renovations have allowed for the creation of a new bothy area where groups can relax before and after tours. Cosmetic upgrades have also been made to the visitor centre enabling the distillery to continue offering first class conference and events facilities to corporate and private clients.

A new series of Glengoyne films was also commissioned from Republic Productions to present a fun and informative look into life at Glengoyne for use during tours and events at the distillery and throughout the world. The films range from a short two minute promotional film, tasting notes and cooking demonstrations to in-depth films on distillation and maturation, all highlighting what makes Glengoyne unique. The well known characters from around the distillery including Head Stillman Duncan McNicoll and Engineer & Warehouseman Billy Edminston were chosen to star in the film, rather than actors, to help communicate the unique character of Glengoyne.

Stuart Hendry commented on the film: “The two aspects that contribute most to the Glengoyne flavour are undoubtedly our SLOW distillation (the slowest in the industry) and our devotion to sourcing the finest possible sherry casks from Spain. In order to fully understand where those flavours come from we wanted to take consumers inside the stills and on a journey to Jerez.

“The feedback from viewers is hugely positive. They enjoy getting behind the scenes and meeting the people. Visitors take particular pleasure in speaking to the stars as they meet them around the distillery yard.”

Master of Malt – The Professors Latest Breakthrough

October 12, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Professors Proprietary Barley Spirit Drink

The Professors Proprietary Barley Spirit Drink

After launching the incredibly popular Bathtub Gin, Master of Malt is proud to announce the release of Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s second product: Proprietary Barley Spirit Drink.

The drink is based on a centuries-old technique of treating whisky casks with “Paxarette”, a rich, syrupy flavouring which originated from the Spanish town of Pajarete, and is made by boiling down grape juice and sherry.

Proprietary Barley Spirit Drink takes this idea, and goes one step further, reducing deliciously sweet Pedro Ximenez dessert sherry until it resembles black treacle, and then mixing it with the finest 10 year old, sherry cask matured Speyside single malt whisky.

The result is the ultimate Winter drink: an unctuously sweet, syrupy concoction that is rather reminiscent of Christmas Pudding, laden with brandy butter!

Tasting Notes

Nose: Immense sherry tones on the nose, coupled with juicy, sticky prunes and muscovado sugar. Hints of nutmeg, toffee brittle, with astoundingly creamy notes of Christmas Pudding, laden with brandy butter.

Palate: Sweet, creamy and incredibly juicy. Those Christmas Pudding flavours are so evocative. The palate is chewy and thick, coasting the tongue with oily toffee and molasses. Cinnamon, dates and golden syrup.

Finish: Spicy and warming, notes of sweet espresso coffee and dessert sherry. Suggestions of rose petal jelly, allspice and baklava.

About Professor Cornelius Ampleforth
– An enigmatic, perhaps fictitious mad-professor-type who creates incredible drinks using old-fashioned techniques and methods.
– All bottles packaged in beautiful brown-paper-wrapped bottles, wax-dipped and wound with flax twine.
– Each bottle features a stunning Victorian-apothecary-inspired print flaunting the delicious ingredients within.
