Latest Caol Ila Bottling Heralds A New ‘Dawn’

March 20, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The New Caol Ila Moch ('Dawn') Bottling

The New Caol Ila Moch ('Dawn') Bottling

This spring sees the dawn of a new expression of Caol Ila, the famous Single Malt Scotch Whisky made on the east coast of Islay since the distillery was founded by Hector Henderson in 1846.

Caol Ila has released a new bottling specially for the Friends of the Classic Malts.

It is called Caol Ila Moch (meaning Dawn in Gaelic) Single Malt Scotch Whisky and is the latest exciting addition to the Caol Ila family. It is the first single malt from the distillery to be selected entirely on the basis of its taste, rather than age, cask wood, strength or finish.

Islay’s east coast is the first on the island to see the dawn, just as it is the first – shielded by Cnoc Dubh, the Black Hill behind the distillery – to receive the night as the sun sinks in the Atlantic on the far side of the island.

The Whisky Exchange described Caol Ila Moch: “A hugely enjoyable romp through Islay’s middle ground. … Caol Ila Moch is a joy, it’s as simple as that. …”

And the cask-strength bloggers said: “An absolute delight …It’s consistent and totally moreish.”

Dave Broom tweeted: “Whisky Live London a pleasant memory … Best in show? Caol Ila Moch & Hazelburn Sauternes. …Seek it out by joining Friends of the Classic Malts.”

Caol Ila Moch is the latest in a long series of special bottlings for the Friends of the Classic Malts which will be available solely to Friends of the Classic Malts through The Whisky Exchange .

As Billy Stitchell, long-time distillery manager at Caol Ila, says: “Moch is selected for taste rather than age, and you’ll still find it every inch a Caol Ila. It’s a new departure for us, to have a whisky that’s not defined by age or strength or finish, but by taste, and it’s an exciting development.”

And why ‘Moch’? Billy said: “I’m an early riser, so for me, a day starts just before dawn. But this place is full of atmosphere at all times of day. The western light is something special and this far north we get wonderful sunsets over the hills and especially, clear dawn light flooding across the Sound, which is what came to mind when we were looking for a name for Moch.“

Tasting notes

Caol Ila Moch is bottled at 43% ABV and carries no age statement.

Appearance: Pale gold. Good viscosity.

Nose: Unreduced, clean and fresh like wet, salty sand after the tide has receded. Some smoke behind, as from an old bonfire. Adding a little water brings up more freshness.

Palate: Unreduced, sweet and salty with a balancing acidity, and fresh as a sea breeze. The trademark clean and smoky character of Caol Ila is here. Appetising. Adding water gives a smoother, softer, sweeter feel, still very maritime, with a nice texture. Sweetly drying overall.

Medium bodied, elegant and smooth.

Finish: Quite short, drying and warming with a little bitterness. Lingering smoky aftertaste.

Summary: An absolutely straightforward, no nonsense Caol Ila. Crisp, assertive, direct, and unmistakeable.

Also available in the Caol Ila range are Caol Ila 12 year old, Caol Ila 18 year old, Caol Ila 25 year old, Caol Ila Distillers Edition and Caol Ila Cask Strength.

They can all be viewed here: Caol Ila.

Master of Malt’s New Caol Ila 30 Year Old

February 21, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Caol Ila 30 Year Old - Single Cask

Caol Ila 30 Year Old - Single Cask

Carrying on from our previous post focusing on Master of Malt’s new malt releases I’d like to present another one of their fine new additions.

It is their Caol Ila 30 Year Old – Single Cask malt whisky.

Distilled way back in 1980 and then bottled last year. The Caol Ila has been aged in a single refill hogshead and then bottled at the natural cask strength of 57.4%.

To add to it’s attraction there are only 154 must-have bottles available.

The price for the 70cl. bottle is £99.95 and can be bought here.

Caol Ila 30 Year Old Tasting Notes

Nose: Passion fruit and mango sorbet to the front of the nose is abruptly cut with vanilla and cigar smoke. This is very moreish and sat in the glass developing big tropical fruits, wood spice, dark rum and a sneaky bit of lobster in hot butter to the end.

Palate: Huge wood and vanilla repeats across the tongue. Slight clementine and rum soaked pineapple.

Finish: Effortlessly graceful with butter toffee, rum spice and stewed fruit.

About Caol Ila:

Caol Ila was built in 1846 and is the largest of the eight working distilleries on of Islay (an island situated off the west coast of Scotland). Currently it has a production capacity of 3 million litres per year.
In the classic Islay style, Caol Ila is made predominantly with peated malt and the resulting phenols have a big influence on the final flavour of the whisky, as does the salty coastal air that the casks ‘breathe’ during maturation. It is one of the most approachable Islay malts.

Introducing a New Whisky Liqueur for Single Malt Connoisseurs

February 18, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The New Master of Malt Whisky Liqueur

The New Master of Malt Whisky Liqueur

Master of Malt have created a Whisky Liqueur for single malt Scotch whisky drinkers.

Master of Malt’s Whisky Liqueur is made exclusively with all-sherry matured, 10 year old single malt whisky from a very famous Speyside distillery. It is then flavoured with many Christmassy spices including cinnamon and cloves and also includes two kinds of orange peel.

The result?

A rich and complex liqueur aimed at the discerning single malt whisky connoisseur.

Master of Malt’s Sales Director, Ben Ellefsen, described the thinking behind the new venture: “We wanted to go against the grain and say “here’s a liqueur that a whisky connoisseur can enjoy”. Our new liqueur is made with all natural ingredients, based around an absolutely superb 10 year old Speyside single malt whisky, which was matured solely in sherry casks. The flavours we added were chosen to complement the Scotch and bring it to a new level.

This is in contrast to many of the mass-marketed liqueurs which use huge levels of sweetness and flavourings to hide the lack of complexity in the (often cheap, young, grain) whiskies they are based on.”

“Our new Whisky Liqueur is delicious neat or in a Rusty Nail cocktail, but we heartily recommend you have it in an ice-filled tumbler, garnished with a freshly cut strip of orange zest…”

You can buy Master of Malt 10 Year Old Speyside Whisky Liqueur here for £26.95.

To sum up: Master of Malt new Whisky Liqueur:-
It is made exclusively with 10 year old, all-sherry matured Speyside Single Malt.
Flavoured with Christmassy spices including cinnamon and cloves and two kinds of orange peel.
Handmade in very small batches.

If you haven’t visited Master of Malt’s website then they are well worth a look. Established in 1985 they have grown to become one of the UK’s leading Online Spirits Merchants.

They are also a highly rated independent bottler whose single cask whiskies scored over 90 points in the Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2009. If that wasn’t enough they also do innovative sample bottles (3cl.) so you can try before you buy the full size.

Just in case you were wondering, a rusty nail cocktail is made from the following …

Ingredients:

* 1 1/2 oz Scotch
* 3/4 oz Drambuie
* Lemon twist for garnish

Preparation:

1. Pour the ingredients into an old-fashioned glass with ice cubes.
2. Stir well.
3. Garnish with the lemon twist.

Glengoyne Awarded Ultra Premium Dram of 2010

Glengoyne Awarded Ultra Premium Dram of 2010

Glengoyne Awarded Ultra Premium Dram of 2010

Connoisseurs from one of the UK’s largest and most prestigious whisky events, The Whisky Show, have named Glengoyne 40 Years Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky as the Ultra Premium Dram of 2010.

Competing against over 20 luxury whiskies currently available in the global marketplace retailing from a minimum of £300, Glengoyne 40 Years Old was selected as the pinnacle dram that best captured the distiller’s art.

A combined vote from visitor sampling and nomination for their preferred Ultra Premium whisky and a final tasting by Event Director Graeme Wallace and The Whisky Exchange proprietor Sukhinder Singh, Glengoyne was declared the ultimate winner of the ultimate whisky award. Praised for its “sweet, complex” and “oily texture”, it was noted that this Single Malt had remained “superbly balanced” and velvety smooth, without being overpowered by its 40 years of contact with the cask.

Graeme said: “To evaluate and settle on which expression was the best of the very best is always going to be extremely hard, with every Ultra Premium Dram being of the highest magnitude, reflecting the finest whisky available today.”

“For a whisky to top this category and win the Ultra Premium Dram Award is no easy achievement and should in no way reflect negatively on the runners up. It was a very close call but Glengoyne 40 Years Old was a very worthy winner.”

Iain Weir of Ian Macleod Distillers who make Glengoyne said “We are thrilled with this result. It is testament to the Glengoyne team’s craftsmanship and skill that the 40 Years Old has succeeded in winning this very prestigious title against such a high calibre of entrants.

“The 40 Years Old Single Malt captures the pure essence of Glengoyne and its exceptional, un-peated ‘Real Taste of Malt’. It is a joy to open the highest quality sherry casks after four decades and find such great balance between malt and Still. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Glengoyne Awarded Ultra Premium Dram of 2010

Glengoyne distillery has been producing whisky from the heart of the Trossachs for over 175 years. With a highly selective cask policy, Glengoyne is also distilled slower than any other single malt Scotch whisky. Using air-dried malted barley, rather than pungent peat smoke, the distillery nurses the spirit through its stills at around one-third of the normal rate. This creates a more subtle, complex whisky in which all of the delicate flavours are freely allowed to express themselves.

Only 250 bottles of the limited edition Glengoyne 40 Years Old have been produced, retailing domestically for £3,750, this luxury whisky is presented in a hand-blown bespoke crystal decanter and stitched leather and solid oak presentation box of the highest quality.

Glengoyne 40 Years Old has been described by Michel Roux Jnr, as “simply sensational”, with the two star Michelin chef commenting on the “complexity in the flavours that linger in the mouth. There’s a strong richness in both the colour and in the flavours. It has a long, dry finish.”

The Whisky Show is an annual premium consumer whisky tasting even that takes place in London at the end of October. For more details visit The Whisky Show

The Whisky Coast Explorer tour includes the opportunity to visit a host of distilleries in Scotland’s Highland, Islay and Island regions including Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Bowmore, Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Oban.

First, visit the beautiful island of Islay, renowned for its peaty, smoky malt whiskies before enjoying a four island feast including the rolling mountains of Mull, spiritual and ever peaceful island of Iona, the extraordinary view over the dramatic basalt columns on Staffa and the majestic rugged landscapes of Skye.

The tour departs from Edinburgh and Glasgow on Fridays (returning to Edinburgh only) starting from 29 April 2011 and costs £478 for adults, £448 for concessions.

The Islay, Edinburgh and Speyside tour starts by taking in the famous Islay distilleries of Bowmore, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Ardbeg and Laphroig followed by a trip to Oban, and its distillery. The next two nights are spent soaking up culture and history in the city of Edinburgh, where guests can continue the whisky theme with a visit to The Scotch Malt Whisky Experience to see the world’s largest whisky collection of over 3,000 bottles.

The tour then continues north to Speyside, home to more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries, including stops at Dalwhinnie, Benromach and Glenlivet as well as the Speyside Cooperage to see how barrels are made. The tour also takes in Loch Fyne, Loch Lomond, Cairngorm National Park, Balmoral and historic Dunkeld.

Spanish Twist for New Benromach Wood Finish

January 7, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach Pedro Ximenez wood finish

Benromach Pedro Ximenez wood finish

Speyside’s smallest distillery has introduced a Spanish flavour to its range of award-winning Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, with the addition of Benromach Pedro Ximenez Wood Finish.

Benromach’s latest offering – a soft, fresh single malt with a pronounced malty character and a rounded sweetness – was ‘finished’ for 30 months in Spanish oak casks from the Pedro Ximenez soleras of Williams & Humbert, one of the world’s most prestigious wine producers.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Benromach Distillery owners Gordon& MacPhail, said:

“We’re delighted to unveil the latest addition to the Benromach range, which has been finished in casks from Bodegas Williams & Humbert, a wine producer with a history going back nearly 130 years. The end result is a golden malt with hints of delicate spice and almond.”

“Benromach is Speyside’s smallest distillery and as a ’boutique’ distillery we are keen to embrace innovation and try new and different things – in this case, we found that the richness of the Pedro Ximenez casks perfectly complemented the complex style of Benromach. We are confident that fans of other Benromach products will love this expression.”

Benromach Pedro Ximenez Wood Finish will be available as a limited release in a 70cl bottle with a suggested price of £29.50.

About Benromach

Established in 1898, Benromach distillery changed hands many times and was virtually derelict when bought by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. Drawing on generations of whisky expertise, the company carried out a painstaking refurbishment and the distillery was officially re-opened by Prince Charles in 1998.
