The Glengoyne Christmas Cask 2010

December 24, 2010 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glengoyne Christmas Cask 2010

The Glengoyne Christmas Cask 2010

Glengoyne Distillery is to launch its SLOWEST ever bottling. Taking over four years to complete, this is a world’s first small batch release from a single cask, creating a live experiment which whisky enthusiasts can take part in.

Available from Tuesday 28 December 2010, The Glengoyne Christmas Cask will be released each Christmas until 2014. Just 100 bottles will be released at a time, exclusively available to buy in person from the distillery shop. This highly innovative, first of a kind bottling will allow single cask lovers to trace the flavour evolution in this remarkable, yet typical, Glengoyne cask over its next four years of maturation.

Cask 790, a First Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt distilled in 2002, is currently rich, with hints of rosehip syrup, cocoa beans, oak and spice. It still clings to the last of its spirited youth, but delivering plenty and promising much more.

Glengoyne’s unique flavour is derived from Scotland’s SLOWEST malt whisky distillation and the use of some of Spain’s finest sherry casks. Every year a team of dedicated noses search the warehouses for casks that are just right, releasing between two and four Single Casks a year. Once in the bottle the whisky stops maturing, so Single Cask bottlings represent a snapshot in time.

Stuart Hendry, Glengoyne Brand Heritage Manager explained “One day, after a particularly productive tasting session, we got to thinking – what if there is something more? We at the distillery are able to taste casks as they mature, witnessing their highs and lows, their flavour peak and troughs as they wind their way towards maturity. What if we were able to share that with our anorak-wearing whisky chums?”

‘Headspace’ – the area within the cask unoccupied by liquid – is normally created through evaporation at the rate of approximately 1.5% per annum. In the case of the Christmas Cask we will be removing 70 litres from the cask each year, leading to much increased headspace, giving the potential for higher rates of evaporation and interactive maturation. Stuart continued: “We don’t know for sure what will happen, but we’re looking forward to finding out.”

The release of the Glengoyne Christmas Cask is something completely different, a first of its kind for the distillery, and the world, representing the Glengoyne SLOW ethos. It is an utterly unique insight into the life of a Single Malt Whisky cask, with the staggered bottlings perfectly demonstrating the long slow path each and every cask takes to reach the moment of perfect maturity. Each bottle will be numbered and signed by the Glengoyne Tasting Panel, but will be presented without packaging in order to keep the price down.

The release date for the first 100 bottles is 28th December 2010 and the bottles must be purchased AT the distillery, priced £100. They will not be available online.

About Glengoyne:
Award-winning Glengoyne is one of the leading premium malt whiskies in the world and has been distilled at Glengoyne distillery since 1833. The Glengoyne portfolio consists of the 10 Years Old, 12 Years Old Cask Strength, 12 Years Old at 43%, 17 Years Old , 21 Years Old and Vintage 1972 as well as other limited edition special bottlings.

SLOWLY distilling the spirit allows more contact with the copper stills, removing unwanted sulphur which can result in bitterness and encouraging the formation of esters creating Glengoyne’s distinctive apple fruitiness. The increased copper interaction also helps draw more flavour from the slowly handcrafted Spanish Sherry oak casks during maturation.

Snow Phoenix – Glenfiddich makes a Dram out of a Crisis!

December 4, 2010 by Gary Leave a Comment

Snow Phoenix - Glenfiddich makes a Dram out of a Crisis!

Snow Phoenix - Glenfiddich makes a Dram out of a Crisis!

Glenfiddich has launched Snow Phoenix – a unique whisky born of chance and adversity which commemorates a moment of drama in Glenfiddich’s long history.

In January 2010, after weeks of heavy snow and record low temperatures, four feet of densely compacted snow covered the Glenfiddich distillery roofs, which housed hundreds of casks of fine aged whisky, gently maturing in semi-darkness.

On the evening of 7th January, in the most remote part of the distillery estate, a number of warehouse roofs dramatically collapsed under the weight, leaving the maturing oak casks exposed to the night sky. In wintery conditions and temperatures of -19˚C, distillery staff swung into action, working round the clock to clear the snow.

Glenfiddich Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, commented: “Standing amongst the wreckage and exposed casks, we were working out our next steps and assessing the situation. I was thinking about how the casks, some of which were very old, contained some beautiful whisky and it occurred to me that they would create a fantastic non-aged single malt. A limited edition bottling from the whiskies in the damaged warehouses would be an appropriate way of celebrating the pioneering spirit of the distillery team at this moment in Glenfiddich’s history.”

“A photographer was shooting the scene and rather fittingly, when we looked at the pictures, the light shining through the warehouse roofs looked like a phoenix rising above us. I suppose this was the moment of conception of Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix.”

Snow Phoenix was created by marrying together natural strength and non-chill filtered casks of different ages and finishes, including American oak and Oloroso sherry. The result is a single malt, gold in colour with bright copper highlights. Its nose is creamy vanilla mingling with vibrant notes of apple and pear complemented by the scent of fresh blossom. The taste is reminiscent of apples roasted in the embers of a campfire, sweetened with heather honey and accompanied by a piece of chocolate, rich and complex with a whiff of burned sugar, coffee and woodsmoke. It has an exceptionally long finish – austere sherry notes mellow into a satisfying sweetness. The distinctive monochrome packaging and amazing photography pays dramatic homage to this exceptional whisky and details this exceptional story.

Shifting snow around the clock gave the Glenfiddich distillery team a deep admiration for those who work in extreme conditions. Glenfiddich has therefore dedicated Snow Phoenix to the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT), who battle harsh environments to save lives in the heart of Speyside, and has made a special contribution to their funds.

To celebrate this partnership, Brian Kinsman invited a group of CMRT volunteers to a unique mid-mountain tasting where they developed the Snow Phoenix tasting notes. By conducting the tasting notes at a high altitude, Glenfiddich’s Malt Master was able to explore the difference temperature has on the taste of whisky.

Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix is a one of a kind, limited edition single malt Scotch whisky which has been bottled in 2010.

One thousand bottles will be made available exclusively to members of the online club, Glenfiddich Explorers.

Glengoyne Christmas Food and Whisky Festival

Glengoyne Christmas Food and Whisky Festival

Glengoyne, Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, is pleased to announce that the second GLENGOYNE CHRISTMAS FOOD & WHISKY FESTIVAL will take place on SATURDAY 4th DECEMBER 2010. Open from 10.30am – 4.30pm it will be a fun day aimed at all ages. In addition to food stalls there will be a range of unusual gift ideas and plenty of activities for all the family.

Distillery tours of Glengoyne and, of course, tastings will also be on offer. For the children there will be story-telling, face painting and not forgetting Santa’s Log Cabin – by the foot of the distillery waterfall at the end of a magical glen.

Stuart Hendry of Glengoyne distillery said: “We’ve made a number of improvements this year, but been careful not to lose the unique atmosphere in the distillery courtyard which brought that elusive feeling of Christmas’s past. There was something magical about the last festival and it is important to keep hold of that.

“This year’s Festival will also see the launch of very special micro-release which will give whisky fans a unique insight into the maturation process. This ground breaking approach will appeal to whisky collectors and consumers alike. Further details to follow mid November.

“Glengoyne award-winning Single Malts are made without cutting corners, resulting in a uniquely smooth whisky, which is distilled at a slower rate than any other. We are proud of our ‘slow’ credentials and have been working with local producers such as Tom Lewis at Monachlye Mhor to celebrate these values as well as creating strong and growing links to local food producers and enthusiasts.”

Richard Hawley Malts Music at Glenfiddich

RICHARD HAWLEY HITS THE PERFECT NOTE

RICHARD HAWLEY HITS THE PERFECT NOTE

– MOJO AWARD WINNER RELEASES FIRST OF THREE EXCLUSIVE NEW TRACKS –

After visiting the Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, earlier this year Richard Hawley, British musical icon and MOJO award winner, has created some stunning new music inspired by the time-honoured art of whisky-making.

Entitled “Dufftown Songs”, the collection of tracks is Richard’s musical interpretation of the pioneering processes he witnessed at the distillery.
The first of the exclusive new tracks has now gone live on www.glenfiddich.co.uk/richardhawley.

Entitled ‘In the Barrel’, the track evokes the claustrophobic feeling of whisky maturing in a barrel and features a unique collaboration of artists including harpist, Julia Thornton, David Coulter on musical saw, Shez Sheridan on guitar and Kate St. John on cor anglais and other instruments.
‘In the Barrel’ can be downloaded for a limited period on www.glenfiddich.co.uk/richardhawley, where fans can also watch exclusive, behind-the-scenes studio footage of Hawley.

Speaking of the partnership, Richard commented: “There’s a certain magic in how Glenfiddich transform water into whisky which I wanted to convey in these songs. It’s been a challenge to write songs which fit the project yet also have wide appeal – something I hope I’ve managed to achieve. I’m looking forward to releasing the other two tracks – “The River” and “Opening the Bottle” – and performing them live later in the year.”

Jamie Milne, the UK brand ambassador from Glenfiddich, comments: “This is the first time the whisky-making process has been captured in song, making the “Dufftown Songs” truly pioneering. Richard’s hard work and creative expertise echoes the pioneering spirit and determination of the people at the Glenfiddich distillery, who are dedicated to producing the best dram in the valley.”

The two remaining tracks from “Dufftown Songs” will go live in November, before Richard performs an exclusive live gig in London in December.

And if you sign up now, you have the chance to win tickets and watch videos of the project so far.
Just go to www.glenfiddich.co.uk/richardhawley.

Drambuie wins TWO Gold Medals

October 21, 2010 by Gary Leave a Comment

Drambuie 15

Drambuie 15

Drambuie is celebrating winning two Gold Medals in the prestigious Drinks International Travel Retail Excellence Awards (that’s quite a mouthful!) at Travel Retail Masters (TFWA) in Cannes for its new innovative addition to its Travel Retail range – Drambuie 15 year old.

Drambuie 15 was awarded Gold Medals in two of the most sought after categories, Best Drinks Launch at TFWA Cannes 2010 and Best Drinks Launch of the Year.

Success in the high-status awards follows last year’s Gold Medal, also in the Best Drinks Launch at TFWA category, for Drambuie’s premium Travel Retail exclusive The Royal Legacy of 1745.

In addition, Drambuie 15 received Silver Medal recognition from both The Spirits Business Travel Retail Awards and Travel Retail Masters Awards, winning medals in the Best Travel Retail Liqueur and Best Liqueur categories 2010 respectively.

Designed to appeal to Malt Whisky drinkers, Drambuie 15 is a connoisseur expression of Drambuie, drawn from the company’s finest selection of 15 Year Old Speyside Malts. Selected for their soft, complex fragrance and flavour, the rare Speyside Malts ideally complement and balance the herbs and spicy aromas of Drambuie’s famed secret recipe.

DRAMBUIE 15 Tasting Notes
SERVE: To sip and savour, neat or over ice.

NOSE: Drambuie aromatic citrus spice, overlaid with fragrant grassy and butterscotch notes – characteristic of aged Speyside Malt.

FLAVOUR: Velvet soft mouthfeel – fragrant citrus lemongrass tang gives way to complex warming malty notes of butterscotch, berries and heather.

FINISH: Shortbread, fresh herbal notes and the unmistakable long afterglow of the Drambuie elixir.

History of DRAMBUIE
The elixir at the heart of DRAMBUIE was created more than 260 years ago exclusively for Prince Charles Edward Stuart of Scotland. It is a unique combination of aged Scotch whiskies, heather honey and a blend of herbs and spices – a recipe kept secret since 1745. In the late 19th century the drink became know as “an dram buidheach” – from the Gaelic the drink that satisfies, and was subsequently registered as Drambuie in 1893. The first commercial production of Drambuie took place in Edinburgh 1909, it became the first liqueur to be served in The House of Lords in 1916 and became popular internationally as it was taken abroad by the Scottish Regiments in the 2 world wars.

Rare Single Malt Whiskies From Diageo

October 12, 2010 by Gary Leave a Comment

Rare Single Malt Whiskies From Diageo

Rare Single Malt Whiskies From Diageo

The time has come. Every autumn, Diageo, proud owner of 28 Scottish single malt whisky distilleries, unveils a small and highly desirable collection of limited edition single malt Scotch whiskies destined for the world’s top bars and the collections of single malt whisky connoisseurs.

Nine such single malt whiskies, all at natural cask strength, are being released this year.

Two of them have once again been drawn from the lovingly preserved but sadly diminishing stocks of distilleries long since closed.
Others are unusual bottlings from distilleries still in very vibrant production: generally older (thus rarer) than the widely distributed expressions, but sometimes younger.

Liquid History

Brora distillery, on Scotland’s north-east coast, opened in 1819 and closed in 1983. The iconic status of its peated, Islay-style single malts has matured as stocks dwindle. This year’s distinguished and memorable release, at 30 years old, delivers all the key characteristics of the classic Brora: exquisite sweetness, rich fruitiness and magnificently appetising savoury smoke. But the quantities are tiny: a mere 2,958 individually numbered bottles.
Across Scotland on Islay, Port Ellen distillery also closed in 1983, so its stocks, too, are irreplaceable, and fading out as the years go by. In 2009, a 29 year old Port Ellen won the supreme Scotch whisky award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, being awarded a Double Gold Medal and named Best Single Malt Scotch. This year’s example – a venerable, dignified Port Ellen of great complexity and depth, according to those who have tasted it – is 31 years old, and comes in an edition of fewer than 3,000 individually numbered bottles. The many devotees of this highly prized single malt generally ensure that stocks sell out within weeks.

Unexpected Speysides

Two Speyside whiskies in this release seldom become available at any age, still less at 20 years plus. The rare Auchroisk has been released after 20 years in a mix of American and European Oak Casks, making it a “poised, sweet and astonishingly sophisticated dessert whisky”, say tasters. A 21 year old Glen Spey joins it, with an unusual background: it has matured in new American Oak casks that had also held sherry, which gives the finish some “drying oak checked by subtle, creamy vanilla and note of powdered chocolate”.

A third Speyside single malt whisky is familiar at 12 years old – but rarely seen at 21. This Cragganmore, with fewer than 6,000 individually numbered bottles, has emerged from refill American Oak casks filled in 1989. It is judged to be “fully mature, yet retaining all of Cragganmore’s complex character; worthy of long contemplation”.

A Closer look at the Malts

A Closer look at the Malts

Lowland star

Founded in 1837 and one of the few surviving Lowland whisky distilleries, Glenkinchie, in the Lammermuir hills south of Edinburgh, makes a aromatic and flowery dram when tasted in its 12 year old personality; here, at 20 years old, Glenkinchie still delivers its scented and floral promise on the nose, a lightly sweet, then crisp acidity with delicate fruits on the palate, and a cleansing and slightly drying finish – for some, the perfect aperitif.

Hebridean big hitters

Finally from the islands in the west come three famous and much acclaimed single malts. Talisker, the award-laden single malt from the Isle of Skye, arrives this year in a 30 year old release of 3,000 individually numbered bottles available world-wide – the fifteenth and equal oldest limited release to be offered by the distillery. At this great age, some of the pepper has faded: this is judged to be “a more mature, reserved Talisker which is also confident, consistent and clearly in its prime. … An interesting and complex whisky, with aromas that change constantly and a lively taste, followed by a long finish, with roasted malt, the ghost of black pepper, and some nutmeg in the smoky and savoury aftertaste.”

On Islay, the ever-popular and relatively youthful 12 year old Lagavulin, from refill American Oak casks filled in 1998, is the ninth of a series of special 12 year old releases at natural cask strength. Lagavulin fans will not be surprised by one taster’s description: “Unpredictable and energetic; among the most appetising and savoury of all whiskies. A fine, punchy expression of Lagavulin”.

From the Sound of Islay, Caol Ila in its unpeated style is a familiar player in the annual Special Releases. This year it comes with 12 years in 1st fill Bourbon oak casks. Here’s an opportunity for an interesting comparison with its more familiar 12 year old peated twin brother, which this year took the much sought-after IWSC Trophy for the best single malt scotch whisky at 15 years and under. Tasters enjoyed its “smooth sweetness, refreshing acidity, peppery spiciness”.

Diageo spokesman Nick Morgan said of the 2010 Special Releases: “Some of these single malts are priced accessibly. Others, inevitably given their age and rarity, are very expensive. We know some people buy them as investments. But all are engaging, distinctive single malts made for enjoyment now, and of course in the case of Brora and Port Ellen, they will never be made again. As before, we’ve combined some familiar bottlings with some unpredictable ones.
“It’s also worth mentioning that some exceptionally elegant packaging can be found on the rarer Special Releases. This year’s original Glen Spey and Auchroisk designs continue that tradition.”
