Benromach Celebrates A ‘Dramatic’ Year!

October 26, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

An award winning arts production, sponsored by Benromach Single Malt Whisky.

An award winning arts production, sponsored by Benromach Single Malt Whisky.

Benromach has celebrated two of Scotland’s best assets, whisky and the arts, with an awards ceremony in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh.

The occasion was the Arts and Business Awards 2012 which was also sponsored by Benromach.

For the last two years, Benromach, in partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland, has sponsored the critically acclaimed The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart which has recently completed a UK tour and is now touring North America.

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service.

The Arts & Business Scotland Awards celebrate and showcase the best examples of business partnerships with the arts and museums in Scotland. Benromach was commended for its sponsorship of Prudencia Hart in the New or Returning Sponsor category.

Michael Urquhart, Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said: “This partnership represents Benromach’s first ever arts sponsorship. It’s been a great success story and highlights the real difference a successful partnership can make to both businesses.

“There is no better time to sponsor such a popular arts performance which has become a massive success in the UK as well as overseas. We’re excited to continue this sponsorship and were particularly pleased when we welcomed the cast, crew and audience to Benromach distillery where the award winning artistic performance was delivered for two nights.”

Elly Rothnie, from The National Theatre of Scotland, said: “The partnership with Benromach has proven massively successful and has helped The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart to engage in a fantastic international tour taking two of Scotland’s great assets, arts and whisky, to a global audience.”

About Benromach
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, the Benromach Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. From Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

Benromach expressions include:
Benromach Ten Years Old
Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional
A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins
A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.

The Benromach Gift pack Trio

The Benromach Gift pack Trio

Benromach fans have had their most sought after three wishes granted with the launch of a gift pack allowing whisky lovers to sample three of its most popular expressions.

Just to warn you there is text containing Pub Quiz answer alerts in the following blog.

(Note: Pub Quiz answer alert.) The gift pack, which is in a cutesy tin, contains three 20cl bottles of the distillery’s flagship single malt, Benromach 10 years Old, a Benromach Peat Smoke and the Benromach Organic, which was the first certified organic single malt Scotch whisky.

Remember, that’s 20cl. per bottle. So don’t bother inviting your mates round for a sampling session, just sample it yourself.

Michael Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail said, “The three malts included in the gift pack showcase the finest qualities of Benromach and all are award winners. The 10 Years Old has an excellent mellow character, while the Organic has a delicious oak influence and soft fruit flavours. Peat Smoke is a seriously smoky experience, balanced with the elegance of Speyside.”

(Note: Pub Quiz answer alert.) If you didn’t already know; The Benromach Distillery, nestled in Speyside, employs just two men who make Benromach by hand, using the finest Scottish barely and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills.

Chivas Announces It’s Own ‘Grand Design’

October 19, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

New Speyside distillery proposed by Chivas Brothers

New Speyside distillery proposed by Chivas Brothers

Chivas Brothers has unveiled plans for it’s own ‘Grand Design’ by announcing plans to build a new malt whisky distillery on the banks of the River Spey near Carron in Speyside.

The new distillery will occupy the site of the silent Imperial Distillery which was mothballed in 1998 and was bought by Chivas Brothers in 2005.

The goal for the new plant is to supply Speyside malt whisky for Chivas Brothers blended whiskies.

Kevin Mc.Cloud would be pleased to hear that they intend to use the latest innovation and environmental expertise, such as heat recovery technology, to provide a modern, eco working environment.

If it all goes ahead, you’ll be able to get a good look at the new distillery from the nearby Speyside Way walking trail, so the aim is to make the distillery blend in with the surrounding countryside.

For now, all we have at the moment is some very nice computer graphics which, I think, look very nice.

Hopefully, Kevin would agree.

It must be a computer image - it's not raining!

It must be a computer image - it's not raining!

This news follows in the wake of earlier news when Chivas said they will grow its malt whisky distillation capacity by 25% by April 2013 with the additional re-opening of Glen Keith distillery and expansions at four existing Speyside distilleries.

It also increased the capacity of The Glenlivet Distillery by 75% in 2010 in light of increasing sales of the global No 2 single malt.

Rekorderlig Cider - Touch Your Beautiful Side

Rekorderlig Cider - Touch Your Beautiful Side

It’s nice to be dependable, decent and clever isn’t it?
Well, the Swedish have a word for it, Rekorderlig.
Which is amazing because Rekorderlig is also the name of a cider, a Swedish cider.

Founded in 1999, Rekorderlig is still brewed in Vimmerby by the same family who are now into their fourth generation.
Rekorderlig is a clever mix of Apple and Pear wine, pure spring water and all decently combined in a way that only the dependable Swedish can do.

Beautiful.

Many people aspire to the ways of Rekorderlig, their beautiful Swedish side.

They share the beauty on Facebook, tweet clever thoughts on Twitter and are decent to their Grannies.

So, if you’re looking for the path to your Swedish side, they’ve done all the hard work for you.

The answer, in the form of liquid enlightenment, can be found in supermarkets and bars here in the UK. Easy to find, just look for the tempting Rekorderlig cider bottle and the variety of amazing flavours it comes in. Finding all the different ones is a joy in itself (there are eight by the way.)

So, if you feel the need for crisp Apple or Pear, juicy Wild Berries, fruity Mango and Raspberry, zesty Strawberry and Lime, spicy Orange and Ginger, rich Apple and Blackcurrant or warming Winter Cider, then Rekorderlig can satisfy your taste buds.

All you have to do then is enjoy it.

Now that is beautiful.

Master Of Malt ‘Carry On’ & announce limited edition bottling by BenRiach and Caskstrength.net

August 21, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

CaskStrength.net - Tote Bag

CaskStrength.net - Tote Bag

Drinks writers Neil Ridley and Joel Harrison of Caskstrength.net have teamed up with BenRiach whisky distillery to produce a single cask, 16 year old Benriach Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

This limited edition bottling is available only through Master of Malt.

Working directly with BenRiach, Messrs. Ridley & Harrison have hand selected a single cask to release this limited edition run of 296 bottles.

The whisky was distilled in 1996, aged for 16 years including 4 years in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask, and bottled in July of 2012. The whisky is a single cask whisky (cask #5614) and was bottled at cask strength at 55.2% abv.

This bottling represents the second in a series of ‘A-Z’ bottlings to be released by Caskstrength.net.
Their first release was an Arran Single Malt Scotch Whisky and sold out in a matter of days on Master of Malt. The Arran release has since become a collectors’ item and has tripled in price in the past year.

CaskStrength.net - BenRiach Bottle

CaskStrength.net - BenRiach Bottle

Each 70cl bottle is labelled with the ‘Cask Strength and Carry On’ logo, is individually numbered, and is hand signed by both Mr. Ridley and Mr. Harrison.

The first 50 bottles will be sold with a limited edition ‘Cask Strength and Carry On’ cotton carrier bag.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Toffee sweetness and Werther’s Originals spring out of the gate. The PX finishing is extremely apparent with brown sugar and Christmastime notes with a hint of salted caramel and just a whisper of granny’s old baking-and-spice cabinet.

Palate: Rich, dark, and dried fruits roll down like an avalanche and lead into a river of caramel and toffee. Some soft potpourri and candied lemon peel pops up its head but doesn’t overpower. Begins elegantly and reveals a more powerful flavour with time.

Finish: Long and lingering, it carries the salted caramel through to the back of the throat for a pleasantly drying finish thanks to the Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
