The Glenlivet Founders Reserve Released!

March 30, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet Founders Reserve

The Glenlivet Founders Reserve

The Glenlivet has today announced the arrival of Founder’s Reserve in the UK and Germany. Unveiled in October last year, Founder’s Reserve is a new, permanent benchmark expression in the brand’s core range that has been created as the ultimate tribute to founder George Smith’s original vision to craft the most definitive, smooth single malt Scotch whisky.

With Founder’s Reserve, The Glenlivet’s perfectly-balanced and fruity house style is skilfully complemented with a creaminess and sweetness from the addition of First Fill American oak casks. The result is a single malt Scotch whisky of exceptional smoothness; the very quality for which George Smith’s The Glenlivet was widely admired and appreciated for in his day.

This expression is presented in a clear glass bottle that draws attention to the quality of the pale gold whisky inside. The Georgian Blue carton is both classic and contemporary in style and features George Smith’s signature, which provides stand-out appeal on shelf and honours Smith’s original style of whisky. Inclusion of the new The Glenlivet signifier, featuring the Packhorse Bridge that crosses the River Livet, appears on both the bottle cartouche and on the lid of the carton, demonstrating the brand’s rich provenance as ‘the single malt that started it all’.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for The Glenlivet, said: “We are very excited about sharing Founder’s Reserve with discerning whisky drinkers around the world. The expression now sits alongside The Glenlivet 12 Year Old in our global range and adds a twist of creaminess to the classic The Glenlivet style, which we are confident will appeal to whisky fans who seek out The Glenlivet’s benchmark quality for single malt Scotch whisky.

“The Glenlivet has been the largest contributor to the growth in single malt over the last five years and we look forward to Founder’s Reserve rolling out around the world, as its exceptional taste and link to the distillery’s past are sure to help us continue our success in the future.”

Alan Winchester, Master Distiller for The Glenlivet, added: “It has been an absolute privilege to craft a whisky in tribute to the man whose talent, dedication and vision for creating the definitively smooth single malt has led to The Glenlivet style that we know and admire today. In marrying together a selection of traditional and First Fill American oak casks from our inventory, I have been able to craft a complex whisky in The Glenlivet style with a pronounced creaminess, sweetness and smoothness that I am sure George would have approved of.

“For me, the nose has delicate aromas of citrus fruit and the sweet palate imparts zesty orange and toffee notes alongside classic The Glenlivet pear flavours, which is followed by a long, creamy and smooth finish. I’m really eager to hear what our fans old and new think about our latest interpretation of The Glenlivet through Founder’s Reserve and look forward to tasting it with them at the distillery in the coming months.”

English Whisky Co. Release Founders Private Cellar: The Final Signature

March 25, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Founders Private Cellar: The Final Signature Press Release

Founders Private Cellar: The Final Signature

The English Whisky Co release their most exclusive whisky to date

What is The Founders Private Cellar Final Signature?

The English Whisky Co Founder, James Nelstrop, sadly passed away last year but before he became too poorly, he instigated a final bottling chosen from the families private stock; these were his favourite two casks.

This will be the last bottling ever to carry James’ signature and of course we have gone slightly over the top with not only the whisky, but also the packaging – this is a spectacular leather suitcase!

Extremely Limited Release Only 238 cases will be available worldwide from Thursday 26th March 2015.

The package Includes:

  • One Leather Suitcase
  • One Bottle of Single Malt Whisky matured in a Rum Cask, Cask Strength
  • One Bottle of Peated Single Malt Whisky matured in a Sherry Cask, Cask Strength
  • Four Engraved Glass Tumblers
  • One Red China Water Jug
  • One Founders Autobiography
  • Two Certificates of Authenticity (one for each bottle)

Andrew Nelstrop, owner of The English Whisky Co. said, “This is a particularly poignant and special release for The English Whisky Co. Not only is it extremely personal, as this will be the last whisky chosen for bottling by the distilleries’ founder, my father James; we also believe it is the oldest English Whisky ever to be released to the public. The whisky is incredibly rare and special and a real tribute to our distillers”

Founders Private Cellar: The Final Signature

The English Whisky Co. Ltd have continued their year on year award winning streak by producing the best whisky in Europe according to Jim Murray, author of the famous Whisky Bible which was released earlier this year.

In what must be a blow to some of the world’s traditional distilling nations The English Whisky Co. not only produced the winning European whisky but also produced a further 14 whiskies that were deemed worthy of the coveted “Liquid Gold” Award which is presented only to whiskies scoring 94 points or higher each year.

Ballantine’s Gets Animated With Limited Edition Bottles!

Ballantines Presents Original Sin Limited Edition

Ballantines Presents Original Sin Limited Edition

Ballantine’s Finest has launched a collection of 12 limited edition bottles, which have been hand painted by the world’s leading ‘GIF-ITI’ and fine artist INSA, and transformed into a vibrant animated piece in the artist’s trademark style. The limited edition bottles will be exhibited at East London’s Original Sin bar and both Ballantine’s and INSA fans around the world will get the chance to own one for themselves via social media.

The innovative partnership is part of Ballantine’s ongoing drive for innovation, collaboration with creative talent and new ways to present the brand in the digital space. It follows on from ‘Ballantine’s Presents INSA’s Space GIF-ITI’, an online film which charted the creation of the world’s largest animated GIF captured from space in Rio de Janeiro, that has been viewed over five million times to date. The film formed part of an ongoing series of collaborations between Ballantine’s and unique global talent who define Ballantine’s mantra of ‘Stay True’, featuring projects inspired by their personal talents and beliefs.

The limited edition bottle collection has once again provided INSA an opportunity to ‘Stay True’ to his passion for experimentation and innovation, demonstrating a desire to go beyond the constraints of creating a limited edition bottle for the off line world to produce something in his trademark style.

To create the animated work, INSA first took twelve of Ballantine’s iconic bottles into his London studio and hand painted them with his trademark ‘Looking for Love’ inverted heart motif. Each of the 12 bottles is totally unique, with the design evolving gradually across them. Once complete, each one was photographed and then stitched together creating the intricate animated “whisky GIF”.

INSA comments: “Rather than just produce another limited edition bottle, I wanted to try out a new idea and take my GIF work to a three dimensional item, and animate across its surface. The Ballantine’s rectangular bottle was a great shape to work with. Creating the Space GIF-iti film with Ballantine’s was such a monumental achievement and it was exciting to extend our collaboration.”

As hand painted and limited edition works of art, the bottles will not be made available for sale. Instead, visitors to London’s Original Sin bar will be able to view the collection from March 25th to April 3rd and have the chance to win one via their Twitter and Instagram channels using the handle @originalsinbar.

Original Sin is the new offering from the team behind the world-renowned Happiness Forgets cocktail bar and since opening earlier this year has proved just as popular. Situated in Stoke Newington, East London, it caters both to the area’s creative residents as a local spot and as a destination bar for visitors from further afield.

Peter Moore, Global Brand Director for Ballantine’s added: “Innovation and artistic collaboration both off and online are at the heart of the Ballantine’s brand today, which this collaboration with INSA captures perfectly. We wanted to create a memorable limited edition range with INSA, so we’re thrilled with the result of the twelve totally unique and hand crafted pieces – which we’ll give consumers the chance to own themselves.”

The animated GIF can be viewed at Ballantine’s website

 Glenlochy / Cadenheads Edition 17 Year Old / 1977 Vintage

Glenlochy / Cadenheads Edition 17 Year Old / 1977 Vintage
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age:    Strength: 61.8%
Summary: Founded in 1898 by David McAndies, The Glenlochy Distillery commenced production in 1901, and it had been part of Diageo from 1953 until its transfer to Scotish Malt Distilleries Co.
Production ceased in 1983, when the distillery was definitely mothballed, just like so many others in that decade. The premises have been acquired by a local hotel group, West Coast Inns Ltd, that developed the site commercially, only retaining the kiln and the pagoda roof, which are declared historic buildings.
The house style is fruity, verging towards sweet, exotic fruitiness and coconut, vanilla and honey characters. The peat is delicate, and soft.
Barring a few independent bottlings (such as Gordon & MacPhail's) and an edition in Diageo's Rare Malts series, distillery bottlings are extremely rare and hard to find.
Nose: Coffee; leafy.
Palate: Green, floral, fresh. Another good cask with plenty of the grassy freshness the distillery was famed for.

 Glenglassaugh / Rare Cask Batch 1 / Cask # 7801

Glenglassaugh / Rare Cask Batch 1 / Cask # 7801
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 38 Years Old   Strength: 42.4%.
Summary: Glenglassaugh Distillery was founded in 1875 by James Moir, a local general store owner. Elgin architects Reid and Melvin designed the distillery and William Sellar of Keith was recruited to plan out the plant. The initial annual production of the distillery was 100,000 gallons.Robertson and Baxter were major customers who supplied spirit to Teacher's for blending and in 1892 purchased the distillery for £10000, who then sold it to Highland Distillers for a £5000 profit. Highland Distillers rebuilt the distillery in 1960, it was later mothballed in 1986. In 2008 the distillery was purchased by The Scaent Group and re-opened. Cask Size and Type: Moscatel Hogshead. Finish: Moscatel Finish. Appearance: Summer harvest gold. Nose: An initial suggestion of boiled sweets with a spearmint warmth gently flows to soft mango, caramelised green pears and cracked black pepper. Palate: Delicate fruit salad balanced with a warm black pepper spice softens to waves of gentle orchard fruits, rich oak and a beautiful fresh barley finish.

 Glenglassaugh / Torfa (peated)

Glenglassaugh / Torfa (peated)
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength: 50%.
Summary: At Glenglassaugh, in addition to the traditional production, they also produce a very limited quantity of whisky using richly peated malted barley as the cereal varietal. The malted barley has been dried in the traditional way, over peat infused kilns, giving the whisky its unique smoky flavour. Glenglassaugh ‘Torfa’, with its peaty, phenolic nature, is a unique expression, and is quite different to the usual style of whisky produced in the Highlands. Cask Formula: Fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Peat level is 20 ppm. Appearance: Gleaming yellow gold. Nose: Vivid, sweet, sooty campfire smoke and sea air infuses zest of lime, apricot jam and ripe soft fruits; all gently warmed by hints of stem ginger and cracked black pepper. Palate: An eloquent, sweet coastal peat smoke engulfs candied peel over melon, pineapple and roasted red apples. Oat biscuits, hints of heather honey and a gentle cigar box spice all combine to give a terrific balance to the expressive smoky character. Finish: A heady, yet elegant harmony of distinct coastal peat and striking spiced fruit flavours.

Palate: Light and delicate with a candy sweetness which is peppered with hints of pine. Lemon sherbet, pineapple and crunchy green apples with a touch of freshly baked sponge cake.
Finish: Clean, light and refreshing.
Cask: Matured in a combination of Bourbon barrels and Virgin Oak casks.

Age:    Strength: 46%.
Summary: Added to the core range in 2014, this whisky is soft and smooth with significant sweet influence from the Port casks. After spending time maturing in traditional oak casks, this particular Tomatin spends the last year of its maturation exclusively in Port pipes.
Aroma: Honeydew melon, red berries, baked apples. Rich toffee, butterscotch. Sweet honey and bitter dark chocolate.
Taste: Fruit and nut. Peaches, apricots, mango and plum. Mixed Walnut and Pecan.

Summary: Cù Bòcan is matured in a combination of Sherry, Virgin Oak and Bourbon casks. This exclusive limited edition, launched in February 2015, showcases the influence that Virgin Oak has on our lightly peated single malt. Clean and zingy with hints of smoke and warm spice, this fully matured Virgin Oak limited edition will not disappoint!

Palate: Warm pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. Baked apples with cinnamon and toffee and just a touch of smoke.
Finish: Clean and zingy with pleasant spice.

 Paul John / Brilliance

Paul John / Brilliance
Country: Indian   Region: Indian
Age:    Strength: 46%.
Summary: A non-peated Indian Single Malt Whisky.
Nose: a complex amalgam of nougat, spotted dog pudding (sans sultanas!) and orange blossom honey with the vanilla spinning tangled webs just beneath. Honey is captured as the bourbon element expands; a delicate gristiness ushers in a freshness to the custard tart;
Taste: the mouth feel exudes star quality with the barley generating all kinds of juicy riches with the light Demerara sugars forming an elegant accompaniment. A coppery spine is soon carrying the barley in varied forms while a gorgeous cocoa sub strata heralds in the spices which buzz the taste buds at will;
Finish: beautifully relaxed: a light tingle from the spices pulses contentedly, the vanillas gather in deeper intensity yet the barley and copper stretches to the end;
Balance: yet another astonishing malt from India.
94.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible.

 Paul John / Classic Select Cask

Paul John / Classic Select Cask
Country: Indian   Region: Indian
Age:    Strength: 55.2%.
Summary: The Paul John Classic Select Malt is the taster's expression with a high nod in bright finish.
Every sniff and sip wind-sweeps the mystique of the meandering waterways and tales of yore, wafting from the oceanfront coast of Goa.
This Classic Select Cask is distantly handcrafted and non-chilled filtered, in chaste tradition, aged undisturbed in American White-Oak ex Bourbon barrels.
Nose: Like Brilliance, but turned up a notch. More vanilla, more cake batter, more fruity sweets and more spice. Stacks of cereal, with rolled oats, freshly milled barley and lots of fruit – apples, pears and hints of the more tropical: pineapples and Refresher chews (without the fizzy sherbert middle). With that there is sweet lemon drizzle cake, window putty and a light gluey note, as well as sweet pastry cream.
Palate: Sharp cinnamon up front: fireball gobstoppers and Hot Tamales. It calms down to show off apple sauce and sweet vanilla, as well as spiced, heavily buttered pastry with a grind of black pepper. Behind that, squirty cream from a can on top of a bag of Haribo. Water kills the heat and ups the sweetness, revealing caraway and spirity notes, along with even more vanilla.
Finish: Haribo fruitiness fades to spicy oak.

The result is dark chocolate and caramelised toffee aromas and a sip that clings to the palate before releasing a magical burst like mint. It’s a rare taste in every serve.”
NOSE: Caramelised toffee and dark chocolate.
TASTE: Wow! rich raisins and fruity notes that cling to the palate.
FINISH: A burst of mintmint that ends in an intense liquorice finale.

‘Bottle Your Own’ Whiskey Facilities Launch at Jameson Visitor Centres in Dublin and Cork

March 12, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Brian Nation

Brian Nation

Brian Nation, Master Distiller at The Midleton Distillery, marked the launch of new Jameson Bottle Your Own facilities at the Old Jameson Distillery, Dublin, by hand-filling a 70cl bottle of a new and rare Jameson Irish Whiskey.

The new initiative, which is also launching at the Jameson Experience Midleton in Cork, invites whiskey fans to personally fill a bottle of Jameson Select Reserve Cask Strength Black Barrel from a live bourbon cask.

Visitors can then personalise the label by hand with their name, the date and the whiskey’s cask number and ABV, before logging their personal details in a Bottle Your Own ledger, becoming a part of the Jameson legend.

The newest member of the Jameson family, Select Reserve Black Barrel is a blend of rich, Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey and a rare small batch grain whiskey, which is triple distilled in small quantities just once per year.

The expression is available at its natural cask strength for the first time and exclusively through the Bottle Your Own facilities at the Old Jameson Distillery, Dublin, and the Jameson Experience Midleton in Cork at the cost of €100 per 70cl.

Special Offer: Save £15.25
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 14 Years Old   Strength: 50%
Summary: Old Malt Cask is unashamedly for connoisseurs of the finest expressions of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. As one of the most established brands in the single cask market, Old Malt Cask is trusted by thousands of Malt Whisky consumers all around the world as the selection which bottles some of the most noteworthy Scotches in the market. Each month, the Hunter Laing tasting panel reviews the company stocks and, after careful consideration, selects only the casks which are of the highest quality. Whether the whisky was distilled in Speyside or Islay, the Lowlands or the Islands, they all have one thing in common – they have been bottled at exactly the right time to capture the unique characteristics of the cask.
Invariably bottled at 50% strength to maintain drinkability, each new expression is non-chillfiltered to ensure that the personality of each cask remains. Our expert blender also writes notes to guide the consumer through the tasting experience. We don't have to do much with the whisky – we let it speak for itself.
Old Malt Cask has spent fifteen years as one of the market leaders in the single cask category. As the reputation of Hunter Laing rests on the quality of each release, they aim to ensure that each new bottling delights the consumer as much as the last one.
Nose: what a beautiful mix between clean, alluring barley and citrus, mainly clementine’s; a little lavender freshens it up even further;
Taste: just about a perfect impact on delivery; the malts are salivating, the sugars are crisp and clean, the vanilla un-embittered…wow!!!
Finish: here’s the dull bit Glendullan…the oak injects a little natural caramel but a few spices compensate;
Balance: at last! A Glendullan how I normally see it in the blending lab, rather than when tasting bottling’s for the bible. Of late they have been pretty ordinary and hardly representative. This one is much truer to its known quality among pros, mainly due to this crisp malt being presented in decent oak for a change.

Nose: clean with a proud butterscotch tart theme. The barley is still fresh and at times concentrated;
Taste: I defy you to count how many different style of natural toffee you can find on this…; a thin layering of ulmo honey sits well with the maple syrup and persistent malt;
Finish: a little spiced cocoa on the fading barley sugar;
Balance: given the right cask, shows what a lovely malt this distillery is capable of producing. Engaging and irresistible.

Nose: plenty of Kentucky at work here with the liquorice and hickory giving depth to the vanilla. The barley is not outdone, though…;
Taste: the oak yoke is discarded on delivery and the vbarley is at full blast;
Finish: just adore those gristy sugars which have somehow survived all these years; some lemon to the late vanilla;
Balance: simple, but so elegant with it!

Nose: apple and pears….with the accent on the pears;
Taste: gets the sugars in early and, better still, makes them of a gristy type. Which means that the ever-growing oak is comfortably contained and the complexity increases….; the barley is juicy despite the years and the spices early on;
Finish: some very clever oils ensure a dessert feel to the finale which includes some sugary diced coconut;
Balance: creamy, complex and luxurious. Both well-made and matured.
