Glenturret - 26 Year Old Hunter Laing Edition

Glenturret – 26 Year Old Hunter Laing Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Highland
Age: 26 Year Old.   Strength: 46.8%
Summary: GLENTURRET DISTILLERY was licensed in 1775 but had been distilling illicitly since 1717 and can therefore claim to be THE OLDEST DISTILLERY IN SCOTLAND.
In keeping with this long history the distillery retains some unique traditions, mashing grist by hand and slowly fermenting the wort in wooden washbacks, for twice as long as other distilleries, to produce an extraordinarily smooth and fruity spirit. The middle cut of the spirit is selected by hand not by computer as it is in other distilleries.
Having worked closely with the Edrington Group, Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd is pleased to offer this exclusive limited-release of Glenturret 26 years old single Highland Malt whisky.
Bottled at natural cask-strength and without chill-filtration or artificial colouring, this small-batch release is a wonderful example of this small, artisanal distillery’s production. Matured in refill-bourbon casks specially selected from the distillery’s own stocks by its Master Blender, the whisky has a velvety palate with toffee notes and a vanilla sweetness combined with the unmistakeable fruitiness of ripe pineapples.
Limited to 2400 bottles worldwide and presented in a wooden gift box with accompanying certificate, this officially-licenced bottling of Glenturret 26 years old is available exclusively to partners of Hunter Laing & Co Ltd.
Colour: Golden to dark straw in colour, its tint speaks clearly of its long maturation in North American oak;
Nose: The whisky is wonderfully complex on the nose with sweet, fruity notes such as toffee apples combining with strong confectionery elements including milk chocolate & caramel along with toffee popcorn & fragrant woody notes including sandalwood & furniture polish. With the addition of some water it then becomes a little briny & musty;
Taste: On the palate, this Glenturret remains sweet with sherbet, some gentle spice and toffee notes. The caramel and golden syrup notes carry across from the nose to the palate and combine with an appealing vanilla sweetness;
Finish: The finish is medium to long, with caramel and ginger spice lingering on the palate.

Its taste; sweetness, spices, brine, orange, toffee and more butterscotch; the perfect storm. Its finish; sweet spicy, sherry and orange; as long as a trip to sea.
Nose: Fruity and floral with hints of oranges, green apples and butterscotch; slightly spicy.
Colour: Rich amber with a red hue.
Taste: Sweet and spicy, with traces of toffee and pears; full bodied with sherry notes and a long lasting finish.

Bowmans Brothers - Small Batch Bourbon

Bowmans Brothers – Small Batch Bourbon
Country: American   Region: American
Age:    Strength: 45%
Summary: John, Abraham, Joseph and Isaac Bowman were Virginia militia officers in the American Revolutionary War. In 1779, they led thirty pioneer families to Madison County, Kentucky and established Bowmans Station. Later, the brothers helped establish and settle Fayette County. They were legends, admired and respected by fellow settlers for their courage and bravery. This hand-crafted bourbon whiskey is a tribute to these four heroic Bowman Brothers.
Tasting Notes: This small batch bourbon has been distilled three times using the finest corn, rye and malted barley. Our unique copper still produces a flavour like no other bourbon. After many years of aging in new charred oak barrels, this 90 proof Virginia bourbon whiskey will please even those with the most discerning tastes. The nose is warm like the Virginia summer. Its complex flavour has hints of vanilla and oak, while the finish is smooth and mellow like a quiet night on the front porch. Enjoy straight, over ice or with a splash of water.

John J Bowmans - Single Barrel Bourbon

John J Bowmans – Single Barrel Bourbon
Country: American   Region: American
Age:    Strength: 45%
Summary: Early pioneer Colonel John J. Bowman first explored Kentucky in 1775. Four years later he moved his family to Lincoln County where they were among the earliest settlers of Kentucky. He presided over Kentuckys first county court and was also appointed the first military commander and governor of Kentucky County. He was the great, great uncle of Abram Bowman, founder of Virginias A. Smith Bowman Distillery. This single barrel bourbon whiskey commemorates the early American pioneer John J. Bowman.
Tasting Notes: This bourbon whiskey has been hand selected from some of the oldest barrels in our warehouse. Each barrel rests years on end while Virginias moderate, but ever-changing climate extracts the complex flavours from the oak and mellows the whiskey. When the time is right, these prime barrels are hand-bottled with care. This single barrel bourbon is 100 proof, but still smooth as the fall breeze. Its fragrant nose is followed by hints of toffee, leather, figs and almonds with a long dry finish. Drink straight or over ice.

Eh Taylor - Single Barrel Bourbon

Eh Taylor – Single Barrel Bourbon
Country: American   Region: American
Age:    Strength: 50%
Summary: Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is widely considered one of the founding fathers of the bourbon industry, fighting for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, nearly three decades after he purchased what is now called Buffalo Trace Distillery. During his time, Taylor implemented several innovative methods still used today, including climate controlled aging warehouses.
E.H. Taylor Single Barrel is aged exclusively in Warehouse C, which was built by Taylor in 1881 and proven to be an excellent aging warehouse. Each barrel is hand-picked and Bottled in Bond at 100 proof to honour its namesake.
Tasting Notes: The aroma carries lightly toasted oak, with dried figs and butterscotch. One sip brings flavours of sweetness balanced with tobacco and dark spices. The finish is just long enough to prepare the palette for another sip. The bottle itself is a likeness to Colonel Taylors original design used over a century ago.

Old Pulteney – 21 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
Nose: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
Colour: Golden amber with straw highlights.
Taste: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

Caledonian Grain Whisky - Clan Denny 45 Year Old Edition

Caledonian Grain Whisky – Clan Denny 45 Year Old Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Lowland
Age: 45 Years   Strength: 47.30%
Summary: Cask No: HH7501.
Bottles from Cask:
Distilled: 1965.
Bottled:
Nose: a curious though not unpleasant mix of bourbon whisky warehouse and my dad’s old-train imbued clothes in the early 60’s after he got in from work …;
Taste: a Kentuckian character from the moment it touches the lips; the sugars are delicate and diverse, the liquorice building in boldness. By the midway point the sugars have moved into fully-fledged honey’s; light and brain-exploding complex;
Finish: a wee bitter note from tired oak. But that is outflanked by those oils carrying a gorgeous fruit and nut character and vanilla to die for;
Balance: anyone who managed to get their hands on the very oldest maturing stocks of Barton bourbon from twenty years ago (and there were very few of us who managed it) would recognise it immediately. The similarities are uncanny.

Carsebridge Grain Whisky - Clan Denny 45 Year Old Edition

Carsebridge Grain Whisky – Clan Denny 45 Year Old Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Lowland
Age: 45 Years   Strength: 44.70%
Summary: Cask No: HH7500.
Bottles from Cask:
Distilled: 1965.
Bottled:
Nose: absolutely no doubting the corn used in this whisky: a gentle honeyed cross between a Canadian and bourbon, alternating in intensity between the two styles;
Taste: the delivery comes down firmly in the bourbon camp; or perhaps I should say softly but decidedly: the oils are sumptuous yet feather-light, the sugars no more than sprinkled;
Finish: warm;
Balance: and now we have so often seen in Kentucky and Canada, old grains maturing in high quality casks rank amongst the best whiskies in the world: here is a stunning example.

Knockando - 12 Year Old Managers Choice/sherry Cask

Knockando – 12 Year Old Managers Choice/sherry Cask
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 12 Year Old   Strength: 58.50%
Summary: Nose: I think my staff have poured me the wrong stuff: they’ve opened up some pot still Demerara, right …? Wrong. No definitely from the Knockando sample. Well, well, well …let’s just say it’s a fruity, sugary, rich start on the nose …;
Taste: Actually, I don’t care if this is rum or whisky. When you get flavours this beautifully defined, a body this sublimely structure …it really doesn’t much matter. Oozes fruity, beautifully natural sweetened quality and complexity;
Finish: A slight bitterness on the finish where, for the first time, there is a minor blemish, but the array of sugars still make for something memorable …and absolutely 100% nothing like I have tasted from any previous Knockando …;
Balance: I have been in the Demerara region Guyana, crawled around a rum warehouse at a rum distillery and opened a cask of rum which has less rum characteristics than this rumbustuous chappie. Quite a rum do.

Talisker - 30 Year Old Single Malt - 2010 Release

Talisker – 30 Year Old Single Malt – 2010 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: IsleofSkye
Age: 30 Year Old.   Strength: 57.30%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
From the only distillery on the Isle of Skye.
Fifteenth and equal oldest limited release to be offered by the distillery.
From American & European Oak refill casks.
Interesting to compare with four previous bottlings of this age in the same series, all of them whiskies of great dignity, subtle nuance and easy balance.
Fewer than 3,000 individually numbered bottles available world-wide.
A consistently excellent, mild-mannered Talisker perfect for more subtle tastes.
DESCRIPTION: A more mature, reserved Talisker which is also confident, consistent and clearly in its prime. An interesting and complex whisky, with aromas that change constantly and a lively taste; remains a Talisker through and through and is an excellent example.
APPEARANCE: Full gold. Good beading.
NOSE: Mildnose-feel. Very reserved ,and slow. At first, teasing fruit acidity (red apple skins) and dried fruits, with sweeter notes (rum toffee, chocolate brownies). Quickly then, sooty smoke (a burned out peat fire) with, after a while, alluring, aromatic spices (frankincense, clove, cedar) and polished oak, followed by more fruit, now boiled sweets. Water makes it more maritime, with iodine, menthol and beach scents, but there are also notes of milk chocolate and soft vanilla toffee in the smoky development.
BODY: Medium.
PALATE: Drinks well at full strength. Slow but consistent, with autumn berries and dried fruit. Cherry stones. Cooling at first, then becoming hot and lively. Water (add only a little) brings up a pleasant smooth texture. It’s now quite sweet and again cooling to start (tart au chocolat) then warming overall, with some salt, a trace of acidity and some very measured, slightly sooty, smoke.
FINISH: Long, with roasted malt, the ghost of black pepper, and some nutmeg in the smoky and savoury aftertaste.

Tamdhu - 21 Year Old - Old & Rare Edition

Tamdhu – 21 Year Old – Old & Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 53.6%
Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angel’s share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see it’s pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. By so doing, they leave in the entire Distillers’ preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish – self evident when you remove the cork. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated.
Sweetly sherried – full of thick dark juicy fruited quality with molasses and a late barley gristiness all apparent on the nose. Palatewise – anticipate some raisin, grape, date and citrus hues plus vanilla pods all running to a soft, subtle sugary/oaked finish.

Tomintoul - 14 Year Old Single Malt

Tomintoul – 14 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 14 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle.The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp. Nose: curiously, there is a sea-weed saltiness attached to this one: not exactly what you expect to find from a malt made and (I think) matured in the centre of the Scottish Highlands. But it adds a compellingly attractive – if eyebrow raising – element to this delicately framed and gently structured, lightly honeyed malt fest. The oak splendidly keeps within the spirit of the style; Taste: just how many variations on a honeyed theme can you get? Here I count at least five, each wave coming in after the other with just the odd nip and tuck or expansion of its intensity; the very faintest smoke is detectable and just when the natural caramels appear to be getting too excited, the malt re-establishes itself; Finish: medium length, bur sheer quality all the way: Bird’s custard mixing dreamily with drier, playfully spiced, oaky vanillas. The lightest of oils spreads the grassy, sharper malts to ensure a wonderful lightness of touch; Balance: not a single weakness: no bitterness, no off notes, no caramels other than those naturally from the oak, no sulphur. Just magnificent whisky bottled exactly the way it is meant to be. An absolute corker from this little-known but outstanding distillery and one of the most delicately complex distillery bottlings of the year.

The New Release: Old Pulteney - Navigator From Edencrofts!

The New Release: Old Pulteney – Navigator From Edencrofts!

Edencrofts are able to offer a limited edition exclusive Highland release from Old Pulteney – The Navigator.

Available from 16th September, this Old Pulteney is a release to celebrate their entry in the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Yacht Race.

The yacht, which is part of the newly designed Clipper 70 fleet will debut in the ninth edition of the world’s longest ocean race and will be called, un-surprisingly, Old Pulteney. The yacht has been designed to replicate the Navigator packaging.

Known as the ‘Maritime Malt,’ because of Old Pulteney whisky’s strong maritime heritage and long standing involvement with sailing it also holds the coveted title of ‘World Whisky of the Year’ courtesy of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

Old Pulteney Senior Brand Manager Margaret Mary Clarke commented: “Old Pulteney has a long and rich association with the sea, from our coastal location and maritime heritage to our involvement with sailing communities around the world today. We are therefore thrilled and very proud to unveil our partnership with the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Race, which will be our biggest global sponsorship to date. Our whisky is enjoyed by people who love sailing and with Clipper, we are looking forward to embarking on the sailing adventure of a lifetime.”

The Clipper Race fleet is made up of twelve brand new identical ocean racers with each one sponsored by a different destination or brand and is due to leave for the 40,000-mile, 11 month adventure on Sunday, 1 September from St Katharine Dock, London.

Tasting Notes: Old Pulteney – Navigator (46%)

Matured in ex American bourbon and ex Spanish Sherry casks.
Colour: Honeycomb.
Nose: Sweet and crisp. Layers of tangy apples and dried fruit harmonise with hints of chocolate and fresh vanilla.
Taste: Full-bodied and rich in flavour. A burst of honey, cocoa and oranges eases into a long-lasting, spicy finish with a maritime surprise at the end.

Old Pulteney – Navigator will be available from Edencrofts from 16th September – £ 38.75

Mosstowie - 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition

Mosstowie – 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 33 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines.
AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Freshly washed wool and hessian. With hints of polished oak, beeswax and orange peel.
TASTE WITHOUT WATER: A sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour. Pepper and ash notes linger.
AROMA WITH WATER: Creamy hot chocolate aromas with spiced orange and cardamom notes.
TASTE WITH WATER: Cinnamon and Clove influences with hints of Cedar wood.

Oban - 1995 Distillers Edition

Oban – 1995 Distillers Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 15 Year Old.   Strength: 43%
Summary: Oban is the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands; the meeting place between land and sea. A perfect, sheltered harbour makes it the principal seaport for the Isles and the capital of the West Highlands.
It has a mild, temperate climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream and washed (too often, some might say) by the soft rain that often falls hereabouts. This misty, maritime character, with a background of heather and peat, is perfectly echoed in the malt whisky produced at Oban.
Oban is made using only the finest barley, malted to the distillerys own particular specification. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.
1995 Distillers Edition: Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
The founders of Oban distillery were entrepreneurs who imported and exported goods for which they could sense a demand. They would have approved of the Spanish influence brought to bear in this Montilla Fino cask wood finish.
A seriously complex whisky of the highest order – a glorious zesty nose and plenty of sweet fruit complemented by salt and chewy, roasty caramel malt.
DISTILLED: 1995.
BOTTLED: 2010.
APPEARANCE: Amber, rose-hued.
NOSE: Outstanding. Fruity and pungent; sea salt with crushed grapes, orange zest and hints of smoke. Massively complex.
BODY: Full, rich.
PALATE: Most explosive Oban ever. Soft malt then wave upon wave of delicate yet rich fruit notes on a tide of brine.
FINISH: Sweetened Jamaican coffee and oak, with an attractive malt-biscuit effect as it dies down.

Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. Opens richly spiced, carrying a fresh leather character – still surprisingly peaty for its age with an earthy, smoked grist character. The palate is initially sweetly peated and runs to a smoke, toffee and spiced character – each pushing for more attention until they harmoniously join in the long finish. Now with salty liquorice – soot and a charcoal ashy quality.
