Hakushu – Bourbon Barrel Country: Japanese Region: Japanese Age: Average 10-12 years. Strength: 48.2% Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Hakushu key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged. Hakushu Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Hakushu malts. The distillery where these malts are crafted lies nested deep within the Hakushu forest, 700 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the southern Japanese Alps’ Mt. Kaikomagatake. Yamazaki – Bourbon Barrel Country: Japanese Region: Japanese Age: Average 10-12 years. Strength: 48.2% Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Yamazaki key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged. The result is a distinctively Japanese whisky with an uncommon aroma and smooth, lingering sweet flavour that only a bourbon barrel can impart. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime. Colour: dark amber; Aroma: vanilla, honey and caramel; Taste: robust, woody; Finish: slightly sweet, pleasantly lingering. |

Laphroaig – Cairdeas Origin 2012 Bottling Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 51.2% Summary: First released at the Feis Ile 2012, Laphroaig Cairdeas Origin was bottled to celebrate 18 years of the Friends of Laphroaig program. Combining the original liquid used to first create Cairdeas along with newer Laphroaig spirit that has been fully matured in quarter casks. Although there is no age statement on the bottle, weve been told by those-in-the-know that Laphroaig Cairdeas is new spirit that was placed into small quarter casks, enjoying a very intense maturation for seven years, that was then blended (50:50) with another special whisky the chaps at Laphroaig had been quietly maturing for between 13 and 21 years old. Both whiskies were fine expressions of Laphroaig in their own right, but when blended together something exceptional emerged as befits this 18th anniversary of the FOL club. Colour: Golden Barley. Nose: Distinctly Laphroaig – iodine, peat, smoke etc. but with quite a bit of citrus (Orange & Apples) and a hint of creamy fudge. Taste: A good mixture of Laphroaig medicinal, peat, slight ginger, apples and hints of vanilla sweetness. Finish: Quite long with peat, iodine and chocolatey coffee. |

Macallan – Diamond Jubilee Bottling Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: Strength: 52% Summary: This specially designed bottle bears a unique image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by the sculptor Arnold Machin. With only 2012 bottles available, and like their previous commemorative royal bottling’s, this edition is expected to be highly sought after by collectors from the worlds of whisky and art. Nose: Vanilla is the first to show, sweet to a point, yet shows maturity. Citrus fruits hang on to the coattails, (orange, apple, hints of lemon), almost appear when they are required. The cask influences then appear, resinous, never overbearing, changing to show polished oak, aged, reminiscent of a once exquisite dining room. Palate: Rich dried fruits open up to show their hand. Raisin drives the character in a non-nonsense manner. It is evident it is not alone, figs and dates, are the lesser players of the group. As they converse, treacle toffee takes a bow followed by the courtiers, ginger and clove. Like a finale the grand lady enters, Oak – refined, polished, elegant, overlooking all. Finish: Long, meanders, in no hurry to leave. |

Macallan – The Coronation Bottling Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: Strength: 58.1% & 55.7% Summary: This limited edition commemorative bottling comprises a beautifully designed box featuring two 350ml bottles of single malt whisky, the first conveying the Queen as she was in 1953, aged just 26, and the second honouring the treasured monarch she has become today. The two bottles each feature a different image of The Queen, one taken in 1953 by Cecil Beaton the other featuring an image taken in 2004 by Julian Calder, one of the world’s most renowned portrait photographers. The first whisky, matured in American oak sherry seasoned casks, is a vibrant gold spirit offering a lemon and orange citrus nose. Ginger and summer berries flit in the background showing the exuberance of youth while hinting at a founding level of maturity. Matured in Spanish sherry seasoned oak casks, the second whisky is a splendid mahogany spirit and presents a richly mature, elegant and refined nose. Nutmeg, ginger, rich fruits and resin soften to give a full mouth feel. There is great maturity on the palate, yet no sign of age. |

Yamazaki Single Malt – An Idea For Fathers Day?
International award winning Yamazaki Single Malt Whiskies from Suntory have a habit of creating pleasant surprises with their smoothness, flavours and consistently high quality. They would certainly surprise most dads who are given a bottle on Father’s Day.
Yamazaki whiskies are among the most honoured single malt whiskies in the world with fifteen gold, silver and trophy awards won since 2003. Whisky experts like Dave Broom and Neil Ridley have long recognised the excellence of Japanese whisky and as whisky judges have singled out Suntory whiskies like Yamazaki for top honours.
With intriguing flavours and a smoothness true whisky lovers can appreciate, Yamazaki will open new horizons for dads who know and like their whiskies and help make this a memorable Father’s Day.
Yamazaki 12 year old is Japan’s leading single malt whisky, much prized for its delicate and elegant taste. The nose of green apple, pine, cedar, honey and orange peel becomes spiced wood, orange marmalade and honey on the palate. The finish has a lingering woody character. This whisky won a Gold Award at the recent San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2011.
Topping this is the Double Gold Award and the title Best Other Whisky (non Scotch) in the World won by the Yamazaki 18 year old single malt whisky.
The premium Yamazaki 18 year old is all richness and depth. The nose of sherry, raisins, maraschino cherries and coffee cream chocolate rewards the palate with dark chocolate, rum, raison toffee and dark coffee beans. As you might expect, the finish is long, rich and dark.
While the inspiration was Scotland, Yamazaki single malt whiskies have developed their own unique style and position within the world of whiskies over the years.
Long maturation in wood such as the local Japanese oak called Mizunara – it imparts aromas of incense – and American oak help to create complex aromas and tastes much sought after by whisky connoisseurs.
Yamazaki is a whisky with a long heritage which dates back to the 1920s when Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii built Japan’s first and now oldest distillery. Using copper pot stills the Yamazaki distillery was the first of its kind outside Europe. The distillery is situated in the green and wooded Vale of Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto in a calm and natural environment with an exceptional source of pure water.
Yamazaki is the most popular malt whisky in Japan and is now increasingly appreciated in Europe and the USA as reflected in its international honours.
